- The SNP leader John Swinney doubled down on a promise to push for another independence referendum as he launched his party’s manifesto in Edinburgh.
He says if the SNP wins a majority of seats again in Scotland, this will empower him to begin immediate negotiations with Westminster on holding another vote but the SNP faces a tough fight with Labour to remain Scotland’s largest party.

I've been casting around social media for people's views (SNP and non-SNP voters both) of why the SNP lost - initially I thought of a 'top ten', but it got bigger quickly, so here's what came up, they are roughly in order of importance to the electorate as far as I could see. Any duplication, errors etc - my fault.

Probably the most vociferous feedback was : The SNP needs to take it's head out of its ar$e & start working towards its declared goal whilst running Scotland in ways that will improve education, health, local services and internal / external investment and increase TRUST in their ability to run a country. Stick with the fact that the SNP represents the people of Scotland at Westminster and not go on about leaving the UK which is madness at this time.
See what happened due to Brexit…..The UK left the EU and gave up the representation in the EU, was really stupid and also lost Scotland being represented in the EU.
Brexit had meant that the UK is no longer represented in the EU Parliament and that has gone almost for ever.
There was no need to leave the EU and there is no need for Scotland to leave the UK today.
There may be at some time in the future.
But really the SNP should be shouting from on high that it is the only party that represents the Scottish people in Parliament.

For your benefit, as you may not be paying attention before now, I will present you a brief summary of what this means.
Previously, the SNP's plan has been to ask Westminster to allow them to conduct a consultative referendum.
This got nowhere, due entirely to Westminster's intransigence. Famously.
It has left the SNP little option but to treat the general election as a de facto referendum.
This is the first actual referendum where this policy has been used in anger, so to speak.
This plan was first implemented a couple of years ago after the English state (unilaterally) decided that it would actually be illegal for Scotland to hold a referendum. Between then and now, no general election actually happened, in case you didn't know.
And of course there will be another referendum within 10 years. And if the SNP lose _that_ one, too, I guarantee it won’t be long before they start asking for a _3rd_ referendum… and a 4th etc. Of course, the unionists don’t have this luxury. If they lose, they’ve lost. Case closed.

Words are like spells. Independent or independence? An independent country or an independent country?? Scotland is a country and distinct from other countries. Where does the real power lie?
For folk on here that don't live in Scotland. This party take no responsibility for their failings in Scotland. It's Westminsters fault, It's the tories fault, It's Brexits fault, It's the No voters fault. It's Jimmy Krankies fault.
That's because most of the blame lies squarely at the feet of Westminster.
This is the point of independence.
Let me illustrate why (and a lot of this comes down to money):
The Scottish government is funded entirely by an annual grant FROM WESTMINSTER whose magnitude is calculated by the Barnett formula.
The overall goal of the Barnett formula is that Scotland receives roughly a population share of the UK government's i.e. WESTMINSTER'S annual spending. That is between 8 and 9 percent.
Where this falls down is that this depends entirely on what Westminster spends each year which is dependent on the elected government. For the last 14 years, we have suffered under low public spending, pro austerity conservatives who have very little presence or vote share in Scotland. So, when WESTMINSTER spends very little, we receive 8-9% of very little, even though we in Scotland have not voted for low spending, pro austerity parties.
That causes an artificial squeeze on our budget which we neither want nor need. There is, as a dependent country, no way around this except hoping that the English will vote for a party that aligns with what we vote for, and why should we be relying on that?
Another restriction upon us is that our government actually has a pretty limited toolbox with which we can tackle the issues we face; and some of the powers we do have make no difference because they rely on powers we don't have. So, for example, while crime and justice, and healthcare are largely under our remit we cannot tackle the issue of high drug abuse effectively because we have no control on drug policy.
What the Scottish government has said it would like to do is decriminalise drugs and provide safe consumption spaces. Westminster puts the kai bosh on this idea and they won't countenance devolving drug policy. So here we have found another example of an issue where the blame lies with Westminster.
Another is Brexit. We want to be in the EU, Westminster said no and froze our democratically elected representatives out of any negotiations. That's pretty obviously Westminster's fault. I don't see how you could argue otherwise, unless you were to say that Scotland should have voted 'yes' in 2014.
What I really like is how the Scottish speak English. I ain't such an expert. My English knowledge isn't as good as I would wish. But I like Scottish English.
Never noticed SNP or nationalist politicians speaking in Scottish Gaelic but perphaps I just didn't find those videos.
