This pensioner 80 yr old, has never smoked, nor drinks alcohol. My husband, 86 has Alzheimer’s and I’m his carer. We can no longer go on holiday and my pension is just above the government limit for the winter fuel allowance. I still find a little money for charities and help others. Thanks a bunch.
Bless you. Have you got in contact with Citizens Advice, Help The Aged, or other charities who will look at what you've got coming in and see if you're entitled to any more monies? They can be really helpful..You should be getting an extra allowance for your husband as he needs care. All the best.

I totally agree. I worked from 1966 to 2021, only the lock downs stopped me working at age 69. I dont smoke and drink very rarely but the standing charges on my energy bills are half of my energy costs as I live alone and in winter I am cold. I did have a small private pension from a past employer, but I am paying tax on that. Pensioners cannot manage on their pensions and many live alone in rented accommodation. We will see more homeless pensioners this year and this idiot who thinks pensioners have spare cash, he needs a reality check.
Neither I or the wife smoke or drink much alcohol but are like many recieve just over the pension threshold so we lose out and like you I used the money to pay gas and electric bills. Notice they didn't and probably won't deduct even £5 a week of all these illegals which would have been better and more acceptable. We did try to save for retirement but there was no minimum wage, long hours & only one weeks paid leave (it did go up to two weeks ) there was still some food rationing . very high unemployment & much higher interest payments than any recent ones. I was sick of working very hard for peanuts even with high qualifications so I went self employed and ran a transport company for 20 years until It would finally end because I could not get the rates to run and pay my men a decent wage. Oh I should have mentioned I retain my working class values - don't smoke or drink excess and now cannot afford a holiday in my retirement or heat my home.

I am nursing my husband at home who is end stage Huntingtons disease . I have to have heating on 24/7, hospital bed , air mattress and turning mattress on 24/7 and a feeding pump !! Ending the winter fuel bill for us is devastating news and for the seriously sick at home , it shouldn’t be allowed ! Me caring for my husband is already saving the hospital a load of money !!

I feel more at ease being forced to relinquish 'the fruits of my labour' so that disabled British people can live comfortably, than sinking it into hotel rooms for economic migrants… or any of the other services that are laid on for them. Shame on whoever said this. I am 79 I don’t smoke and rarely drink. My husband and I worked and struggled financially to bring up our children and maintain a warm and loving home. I only worked when it fitted in with the children, which meant I now only receive a partial state pension and a very small NHS pension. My water/gas/electric/phone/Council tax have all gone up. How dare anyone say that I spend my pension on cigarettes and alcohol.
Except for the age difference this is more or less what I would have wrote. My husband passed away 10 years ago....he'd only drawn his pension for two years, I only get basic pension and a small private pension. I'm over the pension credit limit and I just manage. No thought has gone in to how single pensioners manage , we have the same fuel bills as a couple. I heat a small bungalow and the oil costs me about £700 a year. there is no gas in the village so no choice for changing to something else with the price of electric being high.

I started work at 14 and had to stop working in 2021 due to ill health. I served in the Army for 18 years. So I worked for 50 years, never on benefits or any kind of handout. I have never smoked and never drank any significant amount and nothing for the last 25 years. How dare these greedy moronic politicians dare to constantly insult old people. I have a small army pension and a small private pension both of which are taxed because my state pension is my non tax income limit. I'm a pensioner and I don't go on holiday, my one day trip a year is through my lunch club. I don't smoke or drink. Even my other drinks are seldom anything other than boiled or cold water to make my tea and coffee last longer. I no longer buy new clothes, but buy from charity shops. I've sold most of my jewellery to pay fuel bills but last year spent many hours a day sitting with a fleece blanket and hot water bottle and went to bed before 9 am. This year I have reduced how often I shower and do laundry and may now have to cut down on how often I use my oven for cooking. This does impact on my health and mobility. The cuts to the fuel allowance will affect me very much. Are we to have no pleasure in life at all?
todays pensioners worked all their lives paid their taxes, unlike those that live off the state, it was a walk of shame to collect unemployment , life was very hard, I grew up with my parents working all hours god sent, pensioners deserve all the help they worked for giving this country the chances we have now have, may I also say I never had a holiday growing up, only the wealthy enjoyed that, it sickens me that the elderly are being punished for the failures over many years of our governments !
We had a week in a caravan every 2nd year, taken with my mum cos my dad couldn’t afford to take time off work. I suppose we did better than a lot of kids that were in my class at school, some didn’t even have a bathroom - just a stone sink in the kitchen, & shared an outside toilet with another family, & now it seems the occasional drink is too much for the price they paid having NOTHING as a kid. The wife here. If Labour are wanting to make cuts to save money they need to start with allowances for MP's. No allowances for second homes , no travel allowance, no putting in extortionate expences for meals or light bulbs. My dad and his neighbour actually sat and discussed who is better off . That's not true - I'm a pensioner and, like many others, I don't drink, I dont smoke, I don't go out and my holidays are spent in my garden. I spend my money on food and household bills and rent. I do have a cat for company and the PDSA are a godsend when it comes to any treatment needed. I am not alone in this, there are many, many others who live a simiIar lifestyle. We don't live like this out of choice, we live like this out of necessity and to do our best to keep a roof over our heads.
I am exactly the same. No cigarettes, no alcohol, don't go out and socialise, haven't had a holiday for a very long time. I have a cat and I don't know what I would do without PDSA. They shouldn't judge others by the way they spend their money - alcohol, hoIidays and cigars / cigarettes. Some of us take care of our money - after all we don't have expenses like they do!

This pensioner 80 yr old, has never smoked, nor drinks alcohol. My husband, 86 has Alzheimer’s and I’m his carer. We can no longer go on holiday and my pension is just above the government limit for the winter fuel allowance. I still find a little money for charities and help others. Thanks a bunch.

I get what your saying and you have a valid point, except immigrants themselves don't get anything, its people who have achieved asylum who will be entitled to housing and benefits without having paid in the pot, not immigrants, immigrants have to stand on their own feet, and have paid into the pot like everyone else, illegal migrants, also get zero because their here illegally and will have no access to public funds, they must work in jobs unannounced to fund their lives, diagnose the issue properly, or you end up looking stupid and no one will listen, if you say look we have a problem in our country, we need to limit the amount of people coming here seeking asylum as we currently cannot look after our own, then this is a valid conversation, we do not have the resources to stretch to help everyone. This holds some truth, we had over 200,000 Ukrainians come to the uk, getting benefits, housing and bus passes, whilst british people, including the children of second generation immigrants, who do work and pay into the pot, have to wait sometimes over a decade for housing, and why has this happened? because of our countries politics, we didn't have a hand in what has happened in Ukraine, and russia did create a humanitarian pathway for Ukrainians to leave, should have gone to poland who have much more space then we do, and we shortly have a better economy then we do.

I totally agree. I worked from 1966 to 2021, only the lock downs stopped me working at age 69. I dont smoke and drink very rarely but the standing charges on my energy bills are half of my energy costs as I live alone and in winter I am cold.
I did have a small private pension from a past employer, but I am paying tax on that. Pensioners cannot manage on their pensions and many live alone in rented accommodation. We will see more homeless pensioners this year and this idiot who thinks pensioners have spare cash, he needs a reality check.
Neither I or the wife smoke or drink much alcohol but are like many recieve just over the pension threshold so we lose out and like you I used the money to pay gas and electric bills. Notice they didn't and probably won't deduct even £5 a week of all these illegals which would have been better and more acceptable. Actually it is £386 a day plus other expenses probably claimed for each of the 700 members of the house of lords, what just one member of the house of lords gets for a 5 day week amounts to more than 10 weeks of pension for someone on the old state pension, and as the house of lords is nothing more than a millionaires drinking club the payments they receive out of the GDP quite frankly is immoral, especially as the chancellor Rachel reeves considers it fiscal prudence to scrap the winter fuel payments for pensioners i would suggest she should be looking else where, I.E Payments to the 700 members of the house of lords, and also maybe should look at cancelling the free gratia payments to ex prime of £115,000 for life as not one of them needs it OR is worth it.

I do not understand why working people from the age of 18 until they retire do not accumulate wealth for their retirement. Going through life frittering one's wages away without a thought of one's coming old age is financial suicide. We did try to save for retirement but there was no minimum wage, long hours & only one weeks paid leave (it did go up to two weeks ) there was still some food rationing . very high unemployment & much higher interest payments than any recent ones. Ending the winter fuel bill for us is devastating news and for the seriously sick at home , it shouldn’t be allowed ! Me caring for my husband is already saving the hospital a load of money !!

I only worked when it fitted in with the children, which meant I now only receive a partial state pension and a very small NHS pension. My water/gas/electric/phone/Council tax have all gone up. My husband passed away 10 years ago....he'd only drawn his pension for two years, I only get basic pension and a small private pension. I'm over the pension credit limit and I just manage. No thought has gone in to how single pensioners manage , we have the same fuel bills as a couple. I heat a small bungalow and the oil costs me about £700 a year. there is no gas in the village so no choice for changing to something else with the price of electric being high.

I'm a pensioner and I don't go on holiday, my one day trip a year is through my lunch club. I don't smoke or drink. Even my other drinks are seldom anything other than boiled or cold water to make my tea and coffee last longer. I no longer buy new clothes, but buy from charity shops. I've sold most of my jewellery to pay fuel bills but last year spent many hours a day sitting with a fleece blanket and hot water bottle and went to bed before 9 am. This year I have reduced how often I shower and do laundry and may now have to cut down on how often I use my oven for cooking. This does impact on my health and mobility. The cuts to the fuel allowance will affect me very much. Are we to have no pleasure in life at all?

todays pensioners worked all their lives paid their taxes, unlike those that live off the state, it was a walk of shame to collect unemployment , life was very hard, I grew up with my parents working all hours god sent, pensioners deserve all the help they worked for giving this country the chances we have now have, may I also say I never had a holiday growing up, only the wealthy enjoyed that, it sickens me that the elderly are being punished for the failures over many years of our governments !

We had a week in a caravan every 2nd year, taken with my mum cos my dad couldn’t afford to take time off work. I suppose we did better than a lot of kids that were in my class at school, some didn’t even have a bathroom - just a stone sink in the kitchen, & shared an outside toilet with another family, & now it seems the occasional drink is too much for the price they paid having NOTHING as a kid. Does this prat realise where his big-mouth has just got him.

Let his wish come true, let police start charging him a fee to protect him, doctors charge him extortionate fees to keep him alive, and teachers refuse to teach children to equip them for the future, and he ends up with no pension. If Labour are wanting to make cuts to save money they need to start with allowances for MP's. No allowances for second homes , no travel allowance, no putting in extortionate expences for meals or light bulbs. My dad and his neighbour actually sat and discussed who is better off . Was it my dad who has a tiny pension and the old age pension or his lively neighbour who is on state pension and pension credited. Guess which it was. My dad will be even worse off now the winter allowance has been stopped (will be stopped) Lead by example mr Starmer we the tax payers pay your wage .

Its terrible now im 69 never smoked or don't drive my husband worked 51 years outdoors 6 days a week i work 47 years, we are working class , i respect my parents they worked so hard my mom brought up 7 children no benefits then , i could never have bregruged them anything u looked up to them and older generations i respected them ,but now im at old age i feel a burden a forgotten person treated like you are a nobody looked down upon, it's a terrible country we live in when the older generation are told not what we should or shouldn't do shame on you .

I am a pensioner and still have to work at 67 which means I will not qualify for the winter fuel payments. I really do not want to work at my age but have no choice. There's more proof that our tax money is spent on cocaine by those that work in parliament. including the PMs private bathroom! Than there is OAP's using that money on anything other than heating.

I amazing 73year old woman I worked for 46 years I paid my tax and paid the full stamp I do not smoke or drink I could not afford to buy cigarette s or alcohol so the government are talking rubbish
That's not true - I'm a pensioner and, like many others, I don't drink, I dont smoke, I don't go out and my holidays are spent in my garden. I spend my money on food and household bills and rent. I do have a cat for company and the PDSA are a godsend when it comes to any treatment needed. I am not alone in this, there are many, many others who live a simiIar lifestyle. We don't live like this out of choice, we live like this out of necessity and to do our best to keep a roof over our heads.

I don’t smoke, I never drink and I haven’t had a holiday since 1980. I’m 73, have both knees and both hips with joint replacements due to arthritis. I haven’t slept for the last 3 nights because I am so upset by all these threats.
