Ksenia Khavana (aka Ksenia Karelina) was sentenced to 12 years in prison for donating around $50 to a charity supplying humanitarian aid to Ukraine. Any foreigner who chooses to travel to Russia needs to understand that they are a target of the Putin regime. There is no true rule of law in Russia. If the FSB is looking for hostages to exchange for Russians sentenced for doing nefarious things in the west, they *will* find a reason to imprison you.

This arrest must be understood in a broader context, namely that in France, "Freedom of Speech" and "Personal Freedoms" are seen very differently than in Anglo-Saxon Countries.
Put simply, the "Individual Freedoms" always stop when it is a nuisance / threat to the community.
In this sense, this arrest is not "innocent" / unnexpected.
Most likely, Durov knew exactly what he was going into. And most likely to get a "deal".

      -----
This Durov arrest must be understood in a broader Legal context, namely that in France, "Freedom of Speech" and "Personal Freedoms" are seen very differently than in Anglo-Saxon Countries - Legally.
Put simply, the concept of "Individual Freedoms" always stops when it becomes a nuisance / threat to the rest of the community.
Hints: why do you think that the ** hates France so much? But that's another point... In the case of Durov, this arrest is not "innocent" nor unexpected. Most likely, Durov, as a proper Billionaire now wanting to be seen as the next ^Silk R^ inmate in a US prison, knew exactly what he was going into when landing at Le Bourget in Paris suburbs.\
And most likely to get a "deal". Which is what ru hates.
Understand that this is all about LEGAL concepts reaching outside of France and the EU. (i.e. How Social Media should allow for "free speech" vis-a-vis "the leisure of whichever private organisation to pollute our public arena - Social media).
And in this case, France's Legal system is probably the best one to deal with such a case in 2024.
No wonder E.M. is flipping out...
This will not turn into another pseudo wik rambling...

It doesn't really matter whether Durov is a Russian shill or a genuine dissident/opponent to Putin (why was he recently trying to meet Putin, then ?). What matters is, is he ready and willing to give sensitive/critical informations about Russia to the French authorities ? For all I know, he might even have arranged for his arrest himself, to secure some form of witness protection program by the French.

Telegram encryption protocol is custom made, which is a capital sin in cryptography. You never should design your "own crypto", it is hubris and it is a red flag.
Projects that are serious about privacy use: open protocols, cryptographic standards, they are open source, *and they are non-profit organizations*
If these conditions aren't met, you should wonder how serious they are about their privacy/security claims.

Having said that, Telegram doesn't their end-to-end encryption by default. So everyone who _forgets_ or _don't care_ about enabling the "secret chat" functionality, all the text messages are stored in Telegram and they are readable by their staff. So I find it really suspicious that this is just a "dark pattern" and that they rely that the majority of people _will not enable the secret chat option_
They even add the inconvenience that the "secret chat" is not accesible from the desktop.
And all telegram group chats are not encrypted and afaik it is not encryptable either (they don't have the tech)

And Russia itself has long been attempting to limit access to information on Telegram. @@jstelzner It's no joke: in the 2024 King's Birthday Honours, Bill Browder was appointed Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George (KCMG) "for services to human rights, anti-corruption, and international affairs". Too corrupt for the Russians; fallen out with the Americans; now cheapens the British honour system, what a guy!
