Hey, and late 70's. Going to high school, legit having a "Fruit Eating" class where him and Darby legit just went to the grocery store, both with heads full of LSD, and ate fruit. That's fuckin' LIVIN
Waaaaay before the mid 80s, try late 70s when he co founded the Germs with Darby Crash. Pat was the only established musician when he started with the Germs and was almost important as Darby was in shaping their sound.
@@darkdude521 I read about that in “Lexicon Devil”, the book about Darby and the Germs. LOTS of interesting facts and stories about that crazy time in the 70’s-early 80’s..the school they went to was kinda strange...their teachers were Scientologists, and taught them all these techniques and shit..that’s California for ya..!😂
pat has this ability to completely knock out the depression in a room , even by watching him. its a cool strength vibe. hes like an edgewerthia chrysanthem that has grown in the himilayas and no disease or pest knows how to attack it. its refreshing.
For real. I wish Howard would sit down with Krist, Dave and Pat and just talk Nirvana for a couple of hours. There must be so many great stories about making those albums. Howard clearly appreciates Nirvana way more than he used to back in the day.
Hold on....I'm worried what you heard was give me a lot of Nirvana and Pat Smear Content. What I said was....Give me ALL of your Nirvana and Pat Smear content" - Ron Swanson
@@alejandromitre1591 It's so weird because I have no exposure whatsoever to The Germs other than their reputation and knowing the general outline of the story of Darby Crash. So I cannot in any way connect the Pat Smear I've seen around Foo Fighters all these years and what he must've been like in the late 70s.
Pat is such an awesome guy! Kurt had great taste getting hold of pat. We're so lucky to have him in the Foo Fighters today. Love all these guys, such amazing talent
this was only in recent times.... for the first few years after Kurt had passed, Dave didnt wanna talk about Nirvana... and no one even recalls the first time they heard Pat speaking about anything :D
There honestly needs to be a legit documentary done on Pat Smear and his illustrious career he's been through a hell of alot, and contributed so much to early punk rock- Pat Smear was the only established musician when he helped form the Germs with Darby, he totally shaped their patented sound. Between the Germs and Nirvana he lost two good friends both extremely important and influential to suicide, Darby Crash and Kurt Cobain (yes I know Kurts suicide is questionable.) Then of course all those years in the Foo Fighters.....
Look up the Dave and Pat hang out at David Bowie's hangouts clip, to get a more complete account on how it went. Kurt met Pat in a record shop where he was basically working to stay alive and Kurt going "Excuse me, but aren't you?" So the two of them started talking and Pat admitting that he didn't have a pot to piss in and Kurt going "Well. I have a job for you if you want it!" But to show you guys exactly HOW down on his luck Pat was, he had to pawn his guitars to afford a plane ticket to Seattle, so he became Nirvana's guitarist while not even owning a guitar! And Kurt going "No problem, I have this relationship with Fender, let me hook you up." And handing over one of his own guitars (a blue Mosrite, which he used on the SNL performance.) as a stop gap.
Kurt Cobain knew what a beast guitar player Pat Smear is after listening to his solo album from 1992 called "So you fell in love with a musician". He didnt have to audition him. Pat Smear is an incredible guitar player.
I feel like Foo Fighter's continued success largely stems from Dave's unyielding humility as a lead, and the incredible amounts of admiration all the band members have for each other. If you ask Dave who the best drummer in the world is, he'll say Taylor Hawkins. If you ask him who the best guitarist is, he'll say Pat Smear. Then you talk to Taylor and he's like "naw, Dave's the best drummer in the world," and Pat would be like "dude he's better at guitar than all of us!"
Terrible analogy..... Van Gogh doing "doodles"? Thats not even what Van Gogh was known for AT ALL!! lol I get your point but that analogy is absolute shit. (Hint: Painters dont call their paintings or even preliminary sketches "doodles" and Van Gogh was not a "doodler" regardless)
@W 9797 what’s wrong with that? Look at malmstein super awesome guitar player that nobody really respects since he is a piece of shit lol we love grohl for these reasons! He is a humble man and he had the balls to form another band after his lead singer blew his head off! Most people wouldn’t be able to pull off what dave has done after such a tragedy.
Dave is such a monster musician. Everything he touches is gold. I’ve never been a giant Nirvana or Foo Fighters fan boy. I’m more of a Pantera kind of guy. But Dave is just undeniable in his pursuit of music. Fucking guy can play anything. And to be cool as fuck on top of it all. Bastard 😂
I think he went into the army if I remember correctly. There was an article in The NY Times about him talking about leaving Nirvana and what he did afterwards. I’m pretty sure it was him. Might be worth a google. Too many ex-Nirvana band members to remember them all.
Jason went into the Army and became SF, Green Beret for all of you civilian assholes. He’s pretty legendary in their community. He played in Soundgarden for a time as well.
Pat's demeanor and approach in life keeps him sane.. Pat's a badass! And he's blessed and loved.. the universe ordained him to have the best, because of good karma.
Pat smear is awesome,it was great when he joined nirvana, He just fit right in, An i really think its cool that dave brought him in to the foo fighters, I was bummed out when pat quit in late 97, But over joyed when he came back, He belongs in the foo fighters with Dave an the rest of the band,🤘
I never really looked at Nirvana as a 4 piece band but after this interview I have to give Pat his dues. Great dude and guitarist and also never knew he was a member of the Germs.
I love, love, love Nirvana and never get bored listening to anything I find online, that is new to me, about them and especially Kurt❤️. However, I have to feel for the rest of the Foo when these questions come up, as aren't they sick to death of hearing about Kurt and Nirvana...... Rock on Dave. Love Foo but Nirvana has my heart.
Really dig these guys. Saw Foo during their first three tours - Mike Watt, Shudder To Think and Supergrass. Figured that was enough for me; they got huge after that and wasn't worth seeing them in arenas. Very stoked they're still around and rocking big time.
Dave is so not down with compliments, haha. You could tell he knew that story about Pat and Kurt hearing him play and he was just staring at his feet - as if he were ashamed!
Actually before Pat joined Nirvana, they kind of tried out Big John Duncan, from The Exploited, as well. He was their guitar tech at the time and played second guitar on a few tracks. Not sure if he ever was considered as a possible addition to the band, or if they were just having a good time, but again it shows Nirvana knew their punk classics. (Whether or lot you like The Exploited, Big John was a mean guitar player!!)
