@@mega5k It was late November, the Sunday after Thanksgiving 1993, at the Lakeland Civic Center in Lakeland, Florida about 40 minutes south west of Orlando. The show was general admission and the venue held about 8000 people, a pretty small place by some standards. There was space for a couple thousand people on the floor with seats around the perimeter on 3 sides. The Breeders opened and we're supporting their single "Cannonball". One of the ladies from The Breeders was wearing a shin length reddish colored skirt. I was with my girlfriend (now wife) and another friend and we were just about in the dead center of the floor, which also served as an ice rink so the floor was covered with a layer of plywood to cover the ice. We were standing around having a couple of beers and smoking joints when my friend left to take a leak. I told him, "hurry up they're (Nirvana) gonna come out soon". He left to the back of the arena where the bathrooms were and a few minutes later I saw him walking towards us through the crowd. I raised my hand to wave him to where we were just as the lights went out and I didn't see him for the rest of the show. The show was insanity. I remember almost nothing of it except there was a fourth person on stage with Nirvana. It was Pat Smear although nobody knew this at the time because there was no internet, or social media, or personal computers or smart phones so his being on stage was a surprise. At first I thought it was the girl from The Breeders because Pat was wearing the reddish, shin length skirt I mentioned before. Being in that crowd was like being a cork floating in the ocean. The crowd pushed left, right, forward and back and we flowed with it. If you fell, you were dead. My girl did fall and skinned her knee on the wood that covered the floor, she still has a faint scar (I just asked her, she still has it). I couldn't tell you what songs they played except Heart Shaped Box, Kurt throwing his guitar into the air and the figure from the cover of In Utero in the background. It was mayhem. The show ended, I met up with my friend, ran into a couple other people I knew who sat in the seats that surrounded the floor, and found out they got really baked before the show and one of them fell asleep and missed EVERYTHING! While watching MTV some time later, it was mentioned Pat Smear was touring with them. Pat Smear.... Pat Smear.... Where did I know that name? Turns out when I was in high school in the early/mid 1980's, I hung out with some kids who were REALLY into punk rock and one of the dudes used to work at a record store and he had everything. Minutemen, Screwdriver, The Cramp, The Germs.... The Germs... Pat Smear! Kurt was gone shortly after that and Dave started Foo Fighters and the rest history.
I have followed Pat since the Germs. He has had his share of heartache... He not only Lost Darby and Kurt... But also later he lost his Germs band mate and close friend Lorna Doom, then after that Taylor Hawkins...
Pat certainly has paid his dues and has earned his place in Punk/Rock history!!
He lost Taylor Hawkins too. I saw pat with Nirvana in November '93.
