The Mysterious Disappearance of Adrian Sutil

- Adrian Sutil is now 39 years old. He had a reasonably long career as a midfielder in Formula 1, but has been very quiet ever since leaving the sport in 2015. Just where has he been?

I was Adrian's teammate in A1GP world cup of motorsport in 2005/6 (different nations Germany and Pakistan but run effectively the same team Supernova racing) He was a very good driver but also very very emotional. He would actually cry and I mean tears cry or have real tantrum if something upset him and on more than one occasion. They were tricky cars to setup right and our results really fluctuated with bith cars and we struggled. It didnt go down well with him. My dad who came to watch me race in Australia had to put an arm round him console him as did I when he crashed in Australia. Totally different to what you percieve him to be (a schumacher-esque professional steely German). Also not many people know but we all believed he is closet gay (and I dont say that disrespectfully). But it was just something about him and also the extreme emotions he would convey and his slightly "camp" and feminine mannerisms. Perhaps why he probably avoids the spotlight? He was however a very nice guy once you broke down the facade and was always overly respectful to myself and my dad after we helped him in Australia. Be under no mistake he was my fastest teammate in terms along with Jose Maria Lopez that I ever came across and I came across lots of guys who are big names now.
Hiya Adam. I actually remember you as a fan. You were a decent driver as well, whatever became of you?
For those of you who don't know, Adam Khan came 3rd in the Autoseries 3000 in 2008 with what (I found) was above-average driving & earned himself a spot at Renault, being one of their test drivers for 2009.
@@mariz9084 Hi Riz thanks for the nostalgic msg! Im retired from racing now. Yes you are right I was a test and demo driver for Renault after a strong F3000 campaign. Unfortunately had to miss the first two rounds due to a lack of sponsorship so was a late entry and narrowly missed out on points but was the strongest driver of the field with pole positions by some margin and the most wins. This was despite having the only car with a stick shift where all the others were paddle shift. Renault saw my efforts and gave me a dream opportunity for which im eternally grateful and very lucky to have done.
Nice one Adam. Are you still racing now?
@@noelht1 No, just track the odd trackdays coaching friends and things like that....You never lose it though! Reckon i'd still be handy aside from having to get super fit again. Age and experience are defiantely a bonus in motorracing. Its all in the muscle memory!
@@adamkhan5274 Well I hope the opportunities you deserve cross your path brother
Last weekend Adrian Sutil raced at Paul Ricard for Ferrari Challenge Europe. He won the first race and also gave an interview. It was the first time I saw him since he quit F1, he also never appeared on German TV.
Was just going to post this.
He was once in the Sportstudio of ZDF if I remember right. He played the piano there and he did it on a very high level. But, yes, after he left F1, he disappeared! I really liked his driving style. Was he not in DTM later?
@@InTheSh8 No, he never drove in DTM
@@paratyfuz5681 Ok, thx, mate.
@@InTheSh8 what is his driving style?
Are we all forgetting driver's remourse like he saw Bianchi's crash and was at his funeral, no way he was psychologically to continue racing soon after. The long break did him well
Yeah that crash hit him hard.. you can see him when the marshalls and doctors aided the just crashed Bianchi.. his face said it all..
@@joribremer5260 Yeah that's right, and i think there is a foto of him with his hands over his head looking to the crash scene, he must have been terrified with the way it all happened. Can't blame him for not wanting to come back to F1.
RIP Jules
You always find the emotional side, is that a thing nowadays ???
He shouldn’t have felt an responsibility as it was completely Bianchi’s fault, but I get it.
Sutil: On course to get a good race result
Kimi: *Bwoah*
Sutil’s best season was definitely 2011, and missing 2012 proved to be a big loss for him with how variable that season was
Still, the guy is synonymous with Force India, having spent 6 years contracted with them and 1 year with Spyker
Spyker...... Dang, long time ago I last heard that name
Force India legend 😄
Try getting an interview with Heinz-Harald Frentzen and you get almost the same story (though he did go through the post-F1-DTM career first, as so many do). I guess some people just get fed up and move on.
Frentzen appeared on German TV many times. Sutil NEVER appeared there
Frentzen actually currently works at his father's funeral services office (is it even called so?!?!?! Idk) as he did before his racing career.
but he didn't stab someone in the neck.
with an asshole like Hamilton around you can only be fed up.
@@huepix true but he was backstabbed by his friend who stole his girlfriend.
He's not disappeared, he's just very subtil.
Nice one, works both in English and in German.
@@jermaineayivoh8263what exactly does he do for a living ? His car collection is outrageous.
I was never a Sutil fan, but he always seemed to have the potential to be a very handy midfielder. That Bianchi incident killed him mentally because otherwise he'd being racing DTM or something
Yeah, I it the same way
It really did, and tbf from the angle he was at it he saw it love right in front of him. Would scar anyone imo
He also competed in the TV Total Stock Car Crash Challenge in Germany for the TV Total Team. Very obscure yearly event featuring celebrities. Basically a demolition derby, on a temporary dirt track in the Veltnis Arena. Fun little event that doesn't exist anymore.
I would love if Stefan Raab, or someone else who is well connected, would bring that event back.
Hell, I might even turn on the TV again if that would happen!
Inside of Germany, the event was well known and broadcasted on one of the largest private TV stations (Pro 7), but I can imagine that it is obscure internationally.
Stefan Raab's events must have seemed just as crazy to the world as Japanese TV game shows.
Thank you for this. I admit that I have, occasionally, wondered whatever happened to that guy who nearly had a dream result at Monaco before getting hit coming out of the tunnel.
Man was that heartbreaking. Force India were dead last in 2008, and somehow he had that car up in fucking 4th, only for the defending champion to take him out
There’s a reason the team stuck with him as long as they did
Living a quiet life;
La Ferrari,
Koeniggseg,
Mclaren,
Bugatti,
All quiet cars you can just blend into the crowd with...
🤣
In Monaco, those are as common as Toyota Camrys.
Yup, Monza sp2 and Slr sterling moss. He's enjoying his quiet life,🤣
A friend of mine told me about a year ago, that he saw Sutil in a Bugatti in Hamburg, Germany where I live. And I was just super surprised because I was just recently wondering why nobody knew anything about him post his F1 career
Fantastic racer who never got his due. He was a beast at Force India. On another note, that Force India was the most beautiful F1 car I’ve ever seen.
Something else that really puzzles me is when u hear of or see video of successful drivers from years ago (as was shown here in a clip from a race Sutil was in) and they seem to just disappear without trace, and Wikipedia just tends to have their racing record but nothing about their personal lives or what they've been up to since they've stopped racing
Sutil could have got a front running race seat had he not gone into rage mode in that nightclub.
Exactly, man was on fire in 2011
Ironically saved Hulkenburg’s career lol
I don't think any front teams were interested.
@@bubblewrapvillain Agree. A better driver would have won Spa and Monza, or at least battled for victory.
Sutil was on Williams' radar for 2012 and I reckon given how good the 2012 Williams was Adrian could have easily gotten a couple of podiums considering Maldonado won a race.
@@dantheracer99 Quite likely, but nothing most other drivers wouldn't do. Pity Senna, as missing a lot of years of his career must have hurt his outright ability.
Certainly seems like the incident involving Bianchi impacted his desire to keep racing.
I saw this guy in the private training of Spa in 2007. I stayed two days and I can tell he was the most spectacular pilot to watch on the rain!
I remember when he trought the Raidillon with slides highly controlled !
He is for me one of the best pilot of the last generation but he is good guy and in our days it’s not good to be a good guy…
You probably think that cause you actually got to see an elite professional in person. Almost every other F1 driver would have impressed you just as much.
@@The_ZeroLine This day, in the same time, I saw the others pilots how you talking about and Adrian was most impressive than them. Maybe his car (Spyker) have a bad balance compare the rest.
Stabbing someone in the neck with a wine glass is hardcore. Straight gangsta.
Great video. Very helpful and detailled. Only thing missing is the mentioning of his musical talent. Being born into a family of musicians, Adrian developped some serious skills in playing the piano. There are still some snippets here on UA-cam.
What the hell. Stabbed someone in the neck. That's a murder attempt.
And was upset that others didn't put their life on hold to associate themselves with him at court 🤦♂️🤷♂️
Basically, he went off so he could leave the limelight. Some people do.
I remember wanting him to depart F1 after 2009, when it was clear he was nothing more than a solid driver, blocking better young drivers from a seat. I formed this impression after Spa and Italy. Teammate Fisichella, who was also solid, and getting solidly older, nearly won in Belgium. At Monza, a Sutil error, and for a driver who was trying to crack a top team, there was a missing edge in pace. A Hamilton/Alonso type would likely have won those races in the Force India.
Then there was the 2011 Shanghai champagne glass incident. I thought that was it for him, so when he hung on, I was surprised. That he made it back for a little while - somehow. Thankfully, time moved on and so did he.
Going by this video, perhaps if he'd started karting 7 years younger, he may have been great. Then again, it probably didn't, as starting late didn't hurt Sebastian Loeb too much.
You do truly amazing work.
Thank you! 🏎🏁
God damn it, this isn't a "disappearance", Sutil just prefers to be left alone...
Both statement can mutually exist. Where's the rage and confusion?
It’s the same with Charles Pic, after f1 he did a bit of FE but after that I haven’t seen him anywhere.
He owns DAMS junior racing team or has a very big stake in it and appears on the pit wall if i'm not mistaken
Stabbed someone in the neck with a broken champagne glass....nasty.
My favourite driver! Thank you for this video
I'm surprised he is seemingly rich enough to buy several hypercars because he never signed with a front running team or a manufacturer in a major championship.
Wasn't he a classically trained pianist before F1? If that's the case, then started karting at 14, before moving up the ladder, he must have a big money background.
Sounds like he’s doing exactly the right thing….living his best life and just enjoying it! 🤓
I know. I was about to feel sorry for him, until I heard about his business of fine wines and supercars. Tough life. He just appears to be someone who doesn't need the spotlight.
I was at the Barcelona pre season testing in 2013 and he got the seat right before that test begins if I remember correctly.
He was confident in the wet, albeit maybe a little too much. At least he appears to have been more successful with his financial doings than another former sportsman, BB.
Disappointed his friend didn't find the time to support him in court.
He did disappear, too tall for the sport lol
Pretty sure Russell, Ocon and Latifi are taller
@@ventisette. yeah but I remember in 2014 he really struggled with keeping his weight down, the people you named are young it gets harder.
Fisichella drove a Ferrari in Monza. Had he stayed in the Force India, he would have beaten Sutil again.
That's what I thought too. The Badoer Experiment failed miserably, and Fisichella moved to Ferrari for the rest of the year (not that he did much with that car either).
He did do some development work for Koenig including testing at Spa. Probably got a discount on one of their cars for it as payment
Great video and really appreciated the screaming exhaust at the end
I think seeing the crash where the guy hit the loader was it for him. Decided that racing just wasnt for him anymore.....also I wish we could get more info on what happened in the Chinese night club
Sutil was the poor man's Hülkenberg
And Nico Hulkenberg was the poor man's Nick Heidfeld, who was the poor man's Nico Rosberg, who was the poor man's Sebastian Vettel, who was the poor man's Michael Schumacher, who was the RICH MAN's Ralf Schumacher.
Really good and detailed video :)
When will youtubers stop using clickbait titles, its not a disapearence not even mysterios, the man just lives a quiet live, and the video is more about his history than his ife after formula 1.

Great video dude. Subbed!
Great Video 👏🏻👏🏻
Josh Revell be like: "WTF happened to Adrian Sutil?"
Great Video!
he was incredibly fast in 2009 but made to many mistakes, driving on p6 in the wet at shanghai before crashing 6 laps to the end, making the first q3 apearance for force india at the german gp with p7 and going very well in the race chasing leader barrichello by 1,5 secconds a lap before he stopped, than crashed with raikönnen while he was to overtake him at the pit exit, qualified p2 in monza due to a little error in the lesmos 0,3s ahead of the entire field exept hamilton who was a tenth in front, than chasing raikonnen the whole race without kers like fisichella did in belgium and crashed into his pit crew when he had the chance to finally overtake him. also qualified 4th in japan and 3rd in brazil. but crashed or was getting crashed again on both occasions. his 2010 and 2011 seasons were very solid then.
also there is his heroic drive in the complete backmarker force india in 2008 where he had driven out a 18 seconds gap to p5 raikonnen before rosberg crashed (started on p18 with nearly the whole field in the race, would've got a 20 seconds penalty for overtaking blocked cars in the hairpin, but was setting fastest laps in this car and wouldve easily got p5 or p6 with the penalty without sc). also he was fastest in fp3 2007 there in the rain in a spyker..
his comeback race wasnt that bad either with leading the race for a few laps gaining on the "real" leaders who came out behind him on fresh tires. or overtaking 4 cars in the first lap at radillion and kemmel straight (?) in the 2007 spyker or his overtakes on button and alonso in monaco 2013. and there are a few other honorable mentions.
he just didnt had the charisma and the luck to be remembered. (and destroyed many of his results by himself)
but i think he is maybe THE forgotten driver of the 2000s in terms of pace
edit: ok summarized a lot of the video before watching, nice work :)
The gut certainly had the speed and talent to do great things in F1. But his career got halted by crashes, the champagne incident and eventually just ebbed out.
What’s the champagne incident
@@blixmos6764 the night club incident I imagine
And the Bianchi crash. That's what ended his career.

"Sakon Yamamoto left motorsport entirely and became a politician". LoL, almost as embarrassing as becoming a porn star.
Robert Doornbos has a sex toy company or something along those lines.
The enigma. I loved Sutil during his F1 days. I personally think what happen in Japan in 2014 killed his motivation.
Fun Fact: Adrian Sutil is half uruguayan

That explains everything...
He was half German too (mothers side).....so he had "Hiltler rage".
That would explain the stabbing at nightclub.

He must still blame Hamilton for his conviction and to see him gone on to bigger success.
A few months ago my aunt met Sutil‘s father at the road traffic office (where she works). He probably registered or re-registered a car
