2012 was so painful as a Kamui fan. I mean yeah, his season was inconsistent but he was on level if not even a little better and more consistent than Perez that year. He had a lot of poor luck, most notably probably Valencia when Senna squeezed him into the wall in a race he would have had the chance to finish on the podium considering what happened later in that race and where he was running up until that point. Perez had his three stand-out podiums of course but apart from that you didn't really see much of him. And despite these massive points hauls for Checo, Kamui finished just six points behind him. And these couple of points in the long run made the difference between one driver racing in a top team right now and the other being out of the sport for almost 10 years now despite them being pretty much on the same level.

Hard to say. He's not the only overlooked F1 driver. But maybe the case is that there's no driver with such overtaking abilitiy in current F1. Max is not a forward-thinker, Lewis is barely capable of overtaking in a car without huge speed advantage. Charles is very smart, but way more cautious. Danny Ric was a bit like him back in RB days, but now he's a pale shadow of himself.

Great career history! He had an on track 3rd at the 2021 12 Hours of Sebring with amazing passing at the end, but Jimmie Johnson was not in the car for the required time and so he and Pagenaud were relegated to 7th

There is absolutely no doubt if you watched him that Nigel Mansell is the greatest wheel to wheel racer and overtaker of all time. I have never before or since witnessed anything quite like what Mansell could do over and over again throughout his whole career. Nobody can consistently follow so close behind another car lap after lap despite no brake lights or other clues and pull off such unbelievable overtakes. There are so many examples but passing Senna and a backmarker in a slower car at the impossible Hungary GP in 89 or passing Berger around the outside of the Peralta again in a slower car at Mexico ... I think that one was 1990 are top choices.
Having said that you are right that Kobayashi was quite incredible to watch and had a real skill in wheel to wheel racing that I thoroughly enjoyed while he was racing. It was wonderful to see someone do 'the impossible' every now and then.

Peter - I'm glad you've singled out Kobayashi as a talented driver. However, this format of content feels very much like you're reading data from a Wikipedia page and converting that into some images. I was hoping for more reasons and examples - such as an analysis as to why he was so good at overtaking. Something to consider for future content as this isn't very engaging to a non-Kobayashi fan or data nerd.

I mean... brake late, go in their inside, dont lose control of the car, be smart and most importantly, make sure everyone else knows you got the biggest balls in the pack. It's not like it's about how he's so fast or whatever, it's literally overtaking

In F1 to overtake like that is about incredible talent and feel with the brake pedal and secondly accurate foresight of the next few moments.
To be fair to Peter it is a huge amount of data to collate and needs to be steamed through quickly so its not too dull I would guess. What it does demonstrate is he is very passionate about F1 cos you have to love it to delve to that level of detail. I know how he feels. Keep it up Peter!

Every time I heard the name Kobayashi, I immediately thought of the "Kobayashi Maru" scenario, which is a no-win situation. He was one of the best on the grid in his day and arguably capable of winning the championship if he had a better car. He should have had a much longer career! He was an excellent driver.

I see a suboptimal qualifier who only manages to overtake those starting in front of him because of lower pace.
None of his results make him an overtake "king".
Starting 12th and only doing one stop and finishing 9th, overtake king, get the hell out of here with so much bullshit.
