Thank you. My 2000 Foreman 450s had this problem after sitting 9 years. Hooked it up with a chain to my trailer hitch. Secondary broke free. Shifts great now. ❤
Yes indeed!
The flat head inside the socket is a great Idea, thanks!
I don’t comment a lot, but I felt I had to for this….thank you so much! Got my wheeler running great again thanks to your tips. Really appreciate it!
Haha I’m the same way. Glad it helped 🔧
Hey man thank you so much! This worked great for me! My uncle gave me his 94 fourtrax and it was shifting really rough. Its been sitting for a long time and i used to drive it all the time when i was a kid. Now its shifting like it always used to.
Glad the video help and that’s a Great ATV
Thanks for posting! I have this same problem with my 87 350d. I will try this method tonight before I open the case.
Glad it helped, in my case the clutch disc had rust on them and eventually had to replace them. Too much friction / stiction. Also check this out. Very similar engine.

I have a 1990 350d. When I put it up for winter I ALWAYS install a ratchet strap between the shifter and handle bar to keep the shifter up and the clutch released while in storage. Never had any issues!
Wow, this worked for me. Got the wheeler shifting nice again.
Sweet 👍🏻
Wow tanks a lot very helpfull !!!
Dude so awesome thanks for the info much appreciate,
Mine is doing the same.
No problem and thanks for watching! 🔧
Respect! Thanks a lot.
Have a 92 Timberwolf 250, would this trick work? It goes through all gears better than others but only if you yank the shifter with your hand lmao, but when I pull it up or down all the way it still drives to the wheels.
So my 4th and 5th gears are shifting rough. It shifts but not sure if it's the forks or something else. Would this work? 2003 honda trx450s.
I have some questions on my 1990 350d. Would it be opposite (1st to neutral) as my gears are all up?
Have you been around bikes long enough to just know how to troubleshoot these issues? Or do you have to research them? The bike is coming along great btw.
Appreciate it and yeah just know from having so many in the past. Just learn more and more with each project 🤘🏻
i dont know what your saying beat that wilfred for i have my own 1985 250 es honda big red that i bought by myself
I got a 84 Honda TRX200 for free a few days ago. The motor was all seized up so I got it unlocked, rebuilt the carburetor, and fixed the spark issue and it’s starts up first pull every time and runs like a champ but now the hi low and reverse knob is getting stuck and when I accelerate it’s getting a loud clunk sound and kinda jerks. Any suggestions or ideas on what the issue could be?? 🤔
good video
Thanks
Nice video, man. One question I have is that my atv is hard to shift up, from 1st to 2ndor 2nd to 3rd. I've adjusted the clutch screw/nut to the 1/8th turn but still, it's pretty hard to push the lever up with my foot. Any ideas? Thanks again
Your centrifugal clutch might be damaged. If you push all the way down and it disengages the clutch, your secondary is OK.
Does it matter what gear i'm in when holding down on the shifter?@@RaztechPowersports
@@robv649 no, it doesn’t matter what gear you’re in. Pushing the foot lover all the way down should disengage the clutch.
So my Yamaha Blaster issue I have is when I’m in Neutral then shift to 1st it just shuts off
My 2001 is the next generation but the principal is the same. I've been digging into videos for a week and this makes sense. The adjuster didn't help and I did a tear down, one way bearing is fine. I'll give it a try. Is your still working ?
Yes, still running strong. Occasionally, they will get stuck if the ATV sets for a few months, just have to hold down the foot shift lever while you drive and it will break free.
Excellant video works like it should , but secondary clutch pack is constantly getting stuck together ; any reason why this is happening and what should or could be done to fix ; thanks kurt
If it keeps getting stuck, you’ll have to replace the secondary clutch pack. You could try a thinner oil first. Sometimes the steel plates can get corrosion on them and bond to the clutch plates
Thanks for your thought on the clutch pack , i was kind of leaning in that direction 👍
Gnarly!
Did your bike have a grinding noise from the clutch area when riding from the clutches being stuck?
No sir, I’m not sure what that sound would be. Time to open it up and take a look
is my 2005 baja wilderness 250cc the same way? i tried this and its acting locked up still.....
will this trick work for a 1985 250 es honda big red that grinds when you shift into second gear
More than likely, yes
I have a 88 350d just got a couple months ago sometimes when shifting down the shifter stays down and I have to lift it up quick with my foot to slow down since brakes dont work yet what do you think is the cause?
I would try to adjust the flathead screw on the side of the case. When you wiggle the shifter up and down feel the engagement pretty quick
@@RaztechPowersports ok thank you I will definitely try that I was told also it may be the shifter spring but I'd 100% rather try what you said bfore haveing to tear in to all that haha thank you
Great video. Thanks. I haven't tried this yet. To clarify when pulling on the post, do you put in in 1st then rev while holding up the shifter with your foot? Also, mine will get stuck in first or reverse, I have to shut it off so I can get back into neutral. Then restart and it will shift. Thos only happens some times. If it does, then I can't shift to 2nd without going for a few 100 yards? Would this be a stuck pack? Thanks!
Forgot to mention I just picked a 1986 350 4x4.
Yes, this would definitely affect your shifting. Especially if you have your idol set too high and the centrifugal clutch is engaging
I’m going to try this on my 96’ Wolverine. It shifts through all the gears no problem but when riding sometimes it won’t want to click into gear or when I’m decelerating it doesn’t want to downshift
This did not work for me. I’ll try again tomorrow
I have the same exact issue you have in addition to the clutch being fully engaged while holding up the shifter. Got a bear tracker 250
I got a question I got a Suzuki Quadrunner 250 it's a 2000 model and I thought this clutch was slipping but the pedal is staying stuck up and I have to move my foot to move it back down and then it engages good what does that sound like to you
Try to adjust the clutch first. It might be out of adjustment so much but the lever is getting stuck inside of the case
@@RaztechPowersports ok is the 2000 quadrunners hard to replace clutch in if clutches are bad because I will be honest I ran car motor oil in it but I'm new to these then I heard I wasnt supposed to do that and after I put atv oil in it started doing this
@@benhall8946 Man it’s hard to say. The oil shouldn’t have made any difference
So many toys!
“Projects” 🤦🏻♂️🏁
So the clutch won’t burn if you hold it up while moving?
Correct, same concept has pulling the clutch lever in on a handlebar.
Hello, I have a 1986 Honda Fourtrax 350, I am having a similar issue but my Atv will shift but not go into gear whats so ever. There isn't any lurch forward that makes you feel its going into gear but if you try to push it the atv doesn't move so the gears are definitely engaging. HELP!
I would say your primary centrifugal clutch is burnt up. Time to open it up 🛠️
What if the clutch adjustment feels frozen ? Could not decrease or increase
It’s because it’s in a maxed out setting. Sometimes it’s hard to break free
Will the clutch sticking keep it from going into second and up mine will go in first reverse and neutral but that’s it
Can you cycle through the gears with the ATV turned off?
With mine off I can’t get it outta gear i don’t know what gear because I rebuilt the top end and now it is stuck in gear, also sat for about 3 years outside so I think the clutch pack is froze... does that make sense?
@@honeydiesel7690 yeah even if the clutch pack was frozen. You should still be able to get it into neutral
@@RaztechPowersports ok thanks I wasn’t sure, I’ll pull covers off, something prolly fell of or what not
@@honeydiesel7690 No problem, yeah if you took the side cover off the motor the linkage needs to be put back on perfect. Try to find a picture as a diagram
So are the formans all time 4x4 or is there a lever for 2wd
@@user-ny7xk3hw7c yes it’s full-time 4x4
Would this work on a 88 fourtrax 300
Yes
My atv I will go 10mph and than it won’t go above that it just tops out and is stuck in first it’s a Yamaha kodiak 450
After you adjust clutch and it now won't move what's wrong, help please
I adjusted the clutch and I couldn't tell if I was feeling resistance or not. I kept turning counter clockwise and heard a Clink* not sure what it was but I felt resistance after that. Still having clutch issues
Are all foot shifts bikes supposed to not move when holding it up? I have a 1985 250 bigred I did your trick with and my bike finally isn’t stiff to shift any more haha
It made a loudish smack then I tested drives it and it’s much better so I hope yours did to and I didn’t mess up anything 😂
Correct, when you push all the way down or up, it should rev freely. I have a 85 big red as well! Glad the video help 🏁
Does anybody know the reason why when you hold up on the shifter it still moves?
was yours grinding when you shifted
@@jakethesnake4974 clutch packs froze together
Why is my cluch handle so stuff and slow?
Bad clutch cable
But what did you do?
Push all the way down on the shifter
