Give it a good soaking with silicone spray.. lubes and keeps dust and moisture out. Add this to times you put away for the season and bring out for a new season. Thanks for sharing... always enjoyable watching your skills. Good hunting.👍
Just got a 96 Timberwolf Yamaha here in Kodiak and got it running after two years sitting with previous owner.. my previous experience with atvs were shifting to neutral then reverse I was going back in forth in the garage with why she would go into reverse until this vid u made thank you so much! From what I’m seeing 1st gear engage rev then u can back up. Thank u
Wow!!! Thank you for showing me how to easily fix my problem. My 1999 Bear Tracker was stuck in reverse, but now everything is back to normal with the help and guidance of your excellent video.
Thanks man, had the same problem, saw your video just to check it out before I start tearing into my big bear, took of the linkage and sure as you know it, freaking levers seized, thanks again
Just got a Yamaha 1997 Timberwolf and hoping this is the problem already fixed a couple things just hoping I can get this to work worst case just throw it into neutral and roll it off off the trailer
Good maintenance tip. Given the volume of mud, dirt, and water these machines are exposed to, I'm curious as to what the best WATERPROOF lubricant that won't attract dust and dirt would be for this exposed gear shift mechanism. I have the same mechanism on my 1985 Yamaha 200 Moto 4. After 38 years mine needs a good cleaning and lubing!
You're trying to think of the Timberwolf. I have a 1998 2WD and my selector is doing the same thing which I thought I had cleaned last year, but will do it again. Also, the adjuster on the rod is a little stripped out so someone before me messed it up. But, I got it for free and it runs. One other thing. I've read that technically WD40 is not a lubricant. The advice was to clean and de-corrode, dry it and use light oil. But if it works for you that's good. Thanks.
Have the exact same model. That little gear selector is the dumbest design ever put onto an ATV. I've tore my hands off dealing with that stupid little thing over the years. Even when it functions normally(which is never!) the lever is way too short to get enough leverage to get the thing easily into gear. I sometimes have to shut mine off and rock the ATV back and forth to get it to engage. Its a really piss poor way to design something. What were they thinking!

In depth troubleshooting. Good work.
Nice problem solving and repair 👍 better than a new one.

Great diagnostic approach. Good job! Maybe treat with lithium for longevity?

Great video! Same quad same issue. Huge help, thanks again.
No test drive down the neighborhood street ? Oh, You are probably waiting for the darkness to set in before several _Full_ throttle blast !
There has a been a policeman hanging out on our street. A speed trap I think so I have lay low!
Have a Timberwolf, same issue. This was very helpful!
I'm glad it helped you out.
How do you take off the bumper for the Yamaha Bear tracker
I have a Yamaha Kodiak.. with the ultamatic..it will go netruel and forward but no reverse..

I ended up using Lucas gear lube. It still might collect some dust and dirt, but so far it is working great.
I have a bear tracker that don’t move forward or reverse, could this be the problem?
My 98 Timberwolf isn’t shifting up past 1st gear can’t find a video on UA-cam explaining this issue
I have a 97 big bear 350 and it's the exact same engine and everything as your quad
Thanks for very helpful video. My red reverse indicator light does not come on

The WD-40 did it's job, but I did apply some lube.
I'm trying to find reverse sensor that switches the reverse indicator light on. Big bear 400 professional
I have Yamaha bruin 250 2006 can I installed a universal gear shifter
I was having the same problem but disconnecting the shift linkage showed that it works, does that mean the problem is in the gear box ?
It sure sounds like it. I would take a look at it.
Thanks for the video, great information. Because believe or not mine is doing the exact same thing. I’m sure that will help me.
I hope the video helps you out!
great information, thanks for sharing.
Before you try this make sure that you have it in neutral first and then push Downwards then up an give it a little tug to the reverse side
Use Fluid Film on parts like that. It will not evaporate and stays slick.
Thanks for the tip.👍👍
PB BLASTER to the rescue.
Finna try it right now.👍thanks
Great video
👍👍 Thanks
Thank you!
Thank you so much for your help
I'm glad it helped you out.
Yamaha timberbear is the same system. Too bad this doesn't help me with my grizzly 600 issue
You the man
Well I did this an s still can get into rev.
Very helpful
I'm glad it helped👍👍
good video, thanks....my timberwolf is doing this, ill take the shifter apart ,clean it up and lube it.....
Sweet!!
Nice video. I’d add a real lubricant to help prevent this again. WD-40 is great for clean up, but it’ll be evaporated in a day or 2. Thanks again.
Yes. I lubed it up after I already filmed the video. Still working like it should.
What size engine is this? 250,300,350?
250
I gotta try this
Let me know how it goes.
Bear Tracker, Wolverine, Big Bear, Kodiack
Timberwolf 250 has the same thing

Wow. So far I keep it lubed, it works. Not too smooth, but it works. That design sure is a high maintenance piece.
Will not go in reverse
Excellent video I was fked until I watched this video. Cleaned lubed everything and dremelled a bit now it’s like better than new
some people talk too much
