NARROWBOAT Living - This doesn’t make sense … why isn’t it full? Ep91

- In this week’s video we travel through Martin’s nemesis, Braunston Tunnel and then Julie’s least favourite Braunston double locks! Cruising our NARROWBOAT floating home along the Grand Union Canal. At the locks, Julie has an ‘oops’ moment and then something’s not right ….? A boat has just come up the locks, so why is the next lock EMPTY? And the next one, and the next?
What’s going on … they should be full?
We moor up at Braunston and meet up with friends from @nbspudley and @ournarrowboatquest4894 and spend a day with family too! And then a visit from our youngest son too, before we get water and cruise on new waters in the most fiercest of gale-force winds! 🫣
Hold onto your hats! 🤣
Hope you enjoy this video! 😃 xx

If you’re new to our channel, just a little introduction. We are Julie and Martin and in 2021 we sold our house and gave up our jobs, to live full time on a narrowboat. We bought our 2004 narrowboat Rhapsody in Blue in the September and have been living full time onboard ever since. We hadn’t intended on vlogging, but recorded videos for ourselves and family and it has escalated into the weekly vlogs you see today, so lovely to have you all onboard! ❤️
Please join us as we continuously cruise the inland waterways of the UK, sharing our cruises and adventures with you all, thank you! ❤️
We’ve made a couple of playlists for you too, one with all our favourite cruises and the other is all of our vlogs from the beginning, so you can binge watch to see where we’ve been so far! There’s also a walk through of our narrowboat home too, come inside and see how we live. ❤️

Thanks for another beautiful video Julie & Martin. Maintaining the content on your channel is lot of work and it's done well! As @tteric67 said, you show off the countryside and canal life really well. I'm following quite a few narrowboat channels and keeping track of all the names is getting tricky! So, if I start calling you Chris & Steve, or Sue & Elliott, or Amanda & Wayne, or Liz & Paul, etc, etc, you'll have to forgive me. It's a large and very engaging community. All of you are giving an enormous number of people a world of enjoyment as we travel the canals with you. It's just bloody fantastic!
Hi Neil, what lovely compliments, it’s lovely knowing you are enjoying our little videos, we’re so pleased to have you along with us! Thank you Neil! xx
Helloooooooooo, thank you for sending me this video I enjoyed it at this very sad week.
My Dad died Tuesday and I just wanted to take my mind off doing paperwork and phoning up places.
I love 💕 listen to the birds in your video reminded me of when my Dad used say oh that's a 🐦⬛ blackbird etc.
Thank you for making me remember this.
❤
Condolences to you and family
Hi Susan, so so sorry to hear your sad news, condolences to you and your loved ones 🥰 So pleased our little video has helped you remember fond memories, take care ❤️🩹xx
@@JulieandMartinonRIB thank you
I am a landscape painter. I would never get anywhere if I were on a narrow boat because I would have to stop to paint constantly. I find narrow boats so amazing & interesting. I have never had the privilege to experience a visit to Great Britain. Now at 72 a mobility issues I don’t believe I ever will. I’m experiencing narrow boat life through. Thanks for sharing a small part of narrow boat life. Some of those views are just amazing.
Hi there, so pleased you are enjoying our videos! Feel free to take stills from our videos to paint if you’d like, or if there’s a specific view you like, our email address is julieandmartinonRIB@gmail.com please email and let me know and I’ll send you a photo. So lovely to have you along for our journey, thank you! xx
@@JulieandMartinonRIB Ah thank you so much. That is so nice.
Lovely episode great scenery and buildings you both do a great job and best of all it entertains me at something I would have loved to have done but like much in life it's passed me by. Now age and health stop so your pleasures become my enjoyment!
Hi Nigel, aww such kind words, so lovely to have you along with us on our journeys. Thank you! xx
Thank you for sharing your adventure! Such a nice and relaxing video. Cheers!
Hi Dan, lovely to hear from you, so pleased you enjoyed this one! Thank you so much! xx
Waw, guys, what a great vlog! You know how to show us the scenery, loved the old boats everywhere. Looked like we were in a movie! 😊and that hooter: i think they can hear Martin’s biggun in Scotland! Thank you for the adventure!❤❤
Hi Eric, so pleased you enjoyed this one! What a fantastic compliment too! Thank you so much! xx
Hello, you have the most beautiful skies, where I live in California our skies are always blue, no clouds. I wouldn't like all the muddy tow paths. It's enjoyable to see all the wildlife and your beautiful sunsets. Enjoy watching your adventures. Thank you. Janet
Hi Janet, we’ve forgotten what blue skies look like lol, we’ve had rain and wind for so long now, and those towpaths are awful! Hopefully the weather is about to break and summer will be here at last! 😃 Weren’t those little ducklings cute! Thank you so much Janet,it’s lovely having you along with us! xx
Probably my most favourite, though really wet it is so interesting. Love your vlogs thank you for taking us with you
You’re very welcome, so glad you are enjoying our videos! Thank you so much Amanda! xx
Hi Julie and Martin. What a muddy towpath for you to walk down Julie and naughty Martin laughing at poor Julie when the gate was opening while she was walking across it. Loved the little spring gardens at the side of the locks Julie. Another enjoyable video. Safe journeys xx
Hi Joan, yes these towpaths have been so so muddy with all this rain we’ve been having! Lol, Martin did find it funny 🤣 Those little gardens were so pretty, a nice touch by the locks. Thank you Joan! xx
Lovely vlog as always. I wouldn't care for tunnels at all but those air vents are very neat to see. Love the spring babies eating rice krispies. They are so cute! And of course the baby lambs in the fields. ❤
Hi Dorothy, lovely to hear from you! Yes, Spring is a special time, lots of new growth and baby animals, we feel so lucky to be this close to nature in all the changing seasons! Thanks Dorothy! xx
@@JulieandMartinonRIB I live in a small town south of Indianapolis. It's kind of semi-rural but we still don't get to see a lot of wildlife so I'm envious!

Best thing about Thursday’s are your videos. Those lock gates were in a bit of a state but what a fantastic sunset and the baby ducks were adorable. Hope you are both keeping well
Hi Edward, yes, the lock gates were ridiculous and that sign made me laugh to save water 😂 And that sunset was stunning wasn’t it! Thank you Edward, it’s lovely hearing from you each week and we’re so pleased you are enjoying our little channel xx
Another lovely video Julie. You certainly had to work especially hard this time. 😤xx
Hi Phyllis, yes, I’m not so keen on those double locks, but it’s all good fun! Glad you enjoyed it matey, hope you’re both well! xx

Wow that was quite a ride on that lock gate. Beautiful surroundings though. Thank you both for sharing with us!
Hi Sheryl, yes, I couldn’t believe it when that gate started to open with me on it! 🫣 Thank you so much, really pleased you enjoyed the views! xx
Hi Both, a lovely vlog again. Braunston a picturesque & historic village. Like Martin the only thing I like about the tunnels is coming out the other end !! Seeing your shot of the lambs in the field has reminded me I lost Allison's car keys in that field walking the dog, I'd gone about a mile to realise they'd gone, retracing my steps I thought I'd thrown them in the 'poo' bin but luckily I found them in the corner of that field....life wouldn't have been worth living if I'd gone back without them. As I'm about to go thru Crick I think we should pass each other, if you see me you're welcome to come aboard there's always a bottle of wine to open. Regards Mike & Alison, Sarah Kay.
Hi Mike, wow you were lucky to find those keys! lol re the tunnels! Martin really doesn’t like them, he gets through them as quick as he can!
Aww that would be lovely, really hope we meet up again and get to meet Allison too, and have a proper catch up. We’re currently at Rugby and should be working our way back to Braunston in the next few days. See you soon! xx
Good evening all, please get my name right it's Alison with 1 L!! Mike would have been in very HOT WATER if he had lost my car key!!! It's not as if it is small either!!! We both look forward to meeting up with you, your vlogs are inspiring and make us want to explore more of the canal network. Kind regards ALISON and Mike Narrowboat Sarah kay ❤️ 😊 💕
@@alisonsimpson616 Hi Alison, so sorry, I originally put one L, but then thought I had spelt it wrong and changed it! 🤦♀️
Looking forward to meeting you too! xx
@@JulieandMartinonRIB we do love watching your vlogs, I have the same reaction as you with the Horn!!! I jump when I am at the front and Mike signals to other boats!!! I am still learning and tend to use it more often! Not as frightening when doing it yourself !!!
the reflection in the water makes it look like your boat is floating in mid air! Have safe travels 😃
Hi Scott, ooh I hadn’t noticed that! Thank you so much! xx
Thank you for a lovely vlog so look forward to seeing your travels and I get to escape for a while bless you both 😮😊
Aww thank you Debbie, that’s a lovely thing to say! Take care xx
Beautiful sunset at the end. Thanks for sharing. Take care.
Wasn’t it just, the colours in the trees were just lovely! Thanks Roger! xx
@@JulieandMartinonRIB Hey, sorry to bother you again but, I have been wanting to ask..... I have noticed in yours and other narrowboat videos that when you pass a marina, they all look like they are filled with narrowboats. Are most live aboards and they usually stay moored year around or are most stored and just used during the summer boating season or...? It just seems like if all those boats were taken out during the summer boating season the canals would be jam backed with narrowboats. Thanks (again...lol).
Good Evening guys, lovely video as usual Julie. It was great to meet up with you in Braunston, thanks so much for the shout out! Xx
Aww it was lovely to meet you guys too, really hope our paths will cross again soon, and you’re very welcome! Hope to see you soon! xx

Every turn in the canal, cottage, building, bridge or tunnel entrance a post card in the making!
Aww thank you Malcolm, yes, the scenery around here is just beautiful! Thank you! xx
Lovely video. Been through Braunston a few times. Love the place. Good pub called The Old Plough. Had a few beers n grub wiv me dad there.
We had marina moorings at Wigrams Turn for a while. I miss it.
🇦🇺🫶🏻🇬🇧
Hi Alex, funnily enough it was the Old Plough that we had the pub quiz at, it’s a very nice welcoming place! Wigrams Marina was great, the staff were so helpful, perhaps one day you could go back? Thanks Alex! xx
@@JulieandMartinonRIB my mum used to refer to hill that goes up from the canal to the pub as ‘heart attack hill’.
Parents recently sold their boat as they were finding that some lock gates sometimes wedge or are very heavy and my mum struggles to open them.
I’m in Sydney so I can’t be there to assist. We had the boat for about 20 years and had so many great times.
Would love to take my young family on the UK canals when we are back next year.
Happy boating and keep those vids coming.

Wow!! The colours of the sunset on the trees. Fantastic. I am sure we picked a boat up from Napton on one holiday, as scenery and bridges look familiar.

Hi Barry, it’s a lovely area for hire boats, very scenic! And yes, the orange colours in the trees were amazing! Thank you Barry! xx
CRT need to do some work on those locks, it's a waste of water having to fill them each time.
Yes, hopefully CRT will look at them soon, especially before the summer, as that’s when we’ll need to be careful with water! Thank you so much! xx
Xx
Thanks Edward! xx
Really enjoyed this first time view. Locks seem so complicated! How do you know when to open or shut a gate??!
Hiya! So pleased you found our channel, it’ll be lovely to have you along with us on our journey! Locks really are not complicated, they are daunting when you first do one, but once you’ve done one, they’re all very much the same. If we were going up in a lock, then you make sure the lock is empty, if it is full, you open up the paddles in the gates to let the water out and once the water has equalised you can open the gates to allow the boat in. Then close the gates once the boat is safely in the lock and open up the paddles in the gates at the other end to let the water into the lock. Then once the water is equal in height to the upper level, then the gates will open to allow the boat to leave. You can’t open gates unless the water is the same level each side, so you couldn’t open them by accident. Thank you for highlighting this, as we automatically assume that people understand locks and we shouldn’t! We will try and explain it next time we do some locks, we are a couple of journeys behind on the vlogs due to needing to edit the videos, but I’ll try and show it in a couple of week’s time. Thank you! xx
I would carry bird n duck food, I just love birds
Hiya! We used to have the bird and duck food, but it got so expensive and is really difficult to buy when you are continuously cruising. So apparently cooked rice is good for them, so Rice Krispies are perfect, as they float on water too! Thank you so much, really lovely to hear from you! xx
@@JulieandMartinonRIB that is cool, thank you for sharing
I have just seen the vlog of the inside of you narrow boat. Simply beautiful with the timber, but is it not cumbersome setting up the bed each evening, and taking down in the morning? What if Martin wants to sleep late....
Hi Adrian, thank you for your lovely compliments! Tbh we tend to leave the bed made up, especially when we’re moored up for a few days. The bed boy takes seconds, as it just slides out and is already made. Thanks Adrian! xx
Just an observation, but the reason those gates are so leaky is because of the wear on the edges of the gates caused by people not opening both and squeezing through with just one open. I'm sure you know this and I'm not suggesting you are scraping the edges of the gates away ;)
Hi Steve, you are probably right, we couldn’t believe just how bad they were, one took forever to fill, as the water going out was almost as quick as the water coming in! Thank you so much Steve! xx
Can those wide beams access the locks?
Hi Jim, yes, they can use these double locks on the Grand Union Canal, there’s a few canals though that have single locks, which are for narrowboats only. Thanks Jim xx
Ohio💀 here...........Erie Canal.👻Round the bend is the bend to be around.
Haha 😝 that made us chuckle! Thank you! xx
We moored 1 boat back behind where you are in March as well. We had bird acid drops all over the boat the following morning. So when we got back to Crick that day it was mega clean off session. 🤣👍🏼ps the tow path was the same.
Hi Nick, yes we couldn’t believe the amount of bird ‘muck’ the was every morning, Martin really was not amused lol, he kept checking and rinsing it off! The towpaths lately have been awful haven’t they! Hopefully this weather will breaks soon, fingers crossed 🤞 Thanks Nick! xx
@@JulieandMartinonRIB we got back to Crick Saturday 6th April. I didn’t fancy flying a kite into Crick Marina on the Sunday with the strong winds forecast. 👍🏼

Watching more of your vlogs Julie and Martin
Liking the Journeys you take I do have my own you tube channel
Hatter Johns Uk pilgrim adventures have a look i mainly walk canals, hills and railway trails
Walking the Grand Union canal in sections from Paddington to Birmingham just got past Fenny Stratford so love the peace and tranquility of the waterways
However I’m still learning the ways of you tube struggling to find the watch hours dashboard and no idea how to put music and tags on my videos clips any advice would be helpful
Hi John, I just looked at your channel, looks like you mainly do shorts, will you be doing some longer videos too, they would really help with your watch hours. You can find all the stats on UA-cam Studio, you can use either the desktop or the App version, you can add tags through that too. Also, on your channel description at the end you can add hashtags too, which will help people find your channel. Use hashtags that you think people will search, like #canalwalk or #railwaytrails Hope this helps! xx
I will be doing longer videos in the near future I’m finding my feet with the channel still how do u put your content together on the longer videos as I could do with some pointers on the editing side of things .My watch hours are doing okay but any advice would be helpful
So do u cruise all around the network or do u stay within a certain circuit
Are u still on the Oxford canal as wasn’t there a land slip at Brinklow that caused a stoppage
@@JohnWaterworth-jr7om hi John, I only use my iPhone to film mainly, so I use iMovie to edit the videos on my iPad, I used to do it all on my phone, but it’s easier with a bigger screen. It also includes music too that you can use. There are a few programmes you can use for editing, like Final Cut Pro and Davinci Resolve but they’re a bit complicated for me lol. I’m sort of learning as I go, it all takes time, I would recommend keeping it simple to begin with, you’ll soon pick up new ways to edit. Hope this helps John and good luck with them!
We continuously cruise, so don’t have a base, so can go anywhere on the network. We don’t stick to an area, last winter we were up on the Llangollen. We are not far from Brinklow where the canal is blocked as you say, but we’ll be heading back towards Crick for the Boat Show soon. Thanks John! xx
Julie I think you are a bit cruel, forever talking about Martin's big hooter. Those are things we think but we don't say.
Hahaha 🤣 but he’s so proud of it!, 😂🤣 Thank you! xx
As a hirer I’ve been through that tunnel several times and met oncoming boats without any problems.
Your experience and commentary could well put folks off which I think is not fair.
Please try and be neutral with your opinions 👍
Hi Bill, I didn’t think I had been negative? I certainly didn’t mean to! Martin’s not keen on going through tunnels, but we’ve never had any problems and we’ve passed many boats in tunnels too! We have also met many hire boaters and some are better navigators than private boaters, I’m really not sure what you are referring to, I wouldn’t try to put anyone off and am sorry if it came across that way! Thanks Bill xx
@billsavage807. Why can’t someone express how they feel , I watch this specifically for their experiences. If everything was neutral, why would you bother watching? There is humour watching the ups and downs of their life on board! I am housebound, but get about through watching them!
