NARROWBOAT Living - Wow! So HIGH! Foxton Locks! Ep80

- This week’s video sees us finally get to go down the FOXTON Locks! We show you what it’s like to work the locks, explaining how the RED and WHITE paddles work, and what it’s like from inside the locks too! Speaking of which, Martin does a great job taking our FLOATING HOME from lock to lock, don’t think I could do it …. YIKES, it’s so high! Looks like he’s going over the edge! 🫣 It’s definitely a work-out for Julie doing all those lock paddles and gates, but help is at hand with lock volunteers (lockies) and a lovely man that helped all the way down the entire flight! The flight only took 45 minutes and we were at the bottom within no time. We then turned left at the Foxton Junction and headed to moor up. Mooring our NARROWBOAT home wasn’t as easy as we first thought lol. We had a beautiful moonlit night and fed swans in the dark too. Martin also tests out the ‘Two Horns’ too! xx
Hope you enjoy this week’s video! xx 😃

If you’re new to our channel, just a little introduction. We are Julie and Martin and in 2021 we sold our house and gave up our jobs, to live full time on a narrowboat. We bought our 2004 narrowboat Rhapsody in Blue in the September and have been living full time onboard ever since. We hadn’t intended on vlogging, but recorded videos for ourselves and family and it has escalated into the weekly vlogs you see today.
Please join us as we continuously cruise the inland waterways of the UK, sharing our cruises and adventures with you all, thank you! ❤️
We’ve made a couple of playlists for you too, one with all our favourite cruises and the other is all of our vlogs from the beginning, so you can binge watch to see where we’ve been so far! There’s also a walk through of our narrowboat home too, come inside and see how we live. ❤️

You two are so fun to follow along on your journeys. When Martin said "Julie, if you split your trousers, it will be on camera" cracked me up! I love your sense of humor!
Hi Joyce, lol, we do have a giggle most days, so pleased you are enjoying our little videos xx
Thanks to your mum we found this channel
Hi Bruce, lovely to have you onboard, thank you! xx We’re intrigued, who’s Mum it was that recommended us, was it Yvonne, or Jean? Hope you’re enjoying our little videos, thank you! xx
Lovely, gentle video. Thanks for taking us along with you. Big hugs ❤❤
Aww big hugs to you too! xx 🤗
Naughty Martin, quiet life 😅
The explanation of the locks and how they work was beautifully done, thank you Julie 😊 third time lucky 😂 stay safe ❤
Yes lol, third time lucky with that mooring, you know us, takes us longer to mooring than it does to cruise haha 😝 Not sure I’m going to get any peace at the front of the boat 🤪 Thanks matey! xx
Hi Julia & Martin love watching your channel and the views are beautiful 😃
Hi Pam, thank you so much, so pleased you are enjoying our videos and lovely to have you with us. Thank you! xx
Wat a lovely couple you both are and I do enjoy your vlogs happy cruising all the best👍🍷🍷
Aww thank you Terrence, that’s such a lovely thing to say, really pleased you’re enjoying our videos! Thank you xx
Beautiful. And it was great learning more about locks. I’ve only ever done one set of locks, Hatton, helping a friend, so this was really useful and interesting. It looks like you had some good weather too, which helps at the time, and also makes for wonderful videos. Have a great week both of you xx
So pleased you enjoyed it, I thought it was easier to explain from above. We haven’t done the Hatton flight yet, but it’s on our list! Thanks Mishka, take care! xx
Nice vlog Guys. We really enjoyed you telling us things we didn't know. Ariel view is much appreciated ❤ xxx🎉
Thank you Glenn, we thought that was the easiest way to show how it works with the side pounds and paddles. Really pleased you enjoyed it, thank you! xx
Lovely cruise indeed. So peaceful. I’m glad others leave it til last minute to upload a vlog lol. Take care. Best wishes ❤
Hi Trevor, yes, I’m terrible, always editing right up to the last minute lol 😂 Thank you for a lovely comment, we really appreciate it, thank you! xx
Hello lovely people. I love those locks. Feels like you're in mid-air. 😂😂
Hello matey! Yes, it looks like you’re going over the edge lol, Foxton is a beautiful place, hope you and Leon are both well! Did you try that App? Filthy thumbs matey 👍👍xx
Great vlog as usual and the midnight moon pics were spectacular. Take care you two.
Hiya! Thank you so much! The moon was so bright that night, it was beautiful, we’ve never seen it so bright! Thank you! xx
Loved the explanation of the lock workings, so well done. Super vlogs, thank you as always, your both such a pleasure to watch ❤❤❤❤
Hi Jacqui, thank you, so pleased you enjoyed it! How’s your house sale going? 🤞🙏 Lovely compliments, thank you! xx
@@JulieandMartinonRIB all gone through and our boat will be ready for crick which is all very fast, we are renting until August 🤣 we are thrilled though. We went with Swan in the end and got a cancellation so feel very lucky ❤️ it’s been a long road but we got there xxxxx
@@jacquelineryde7339 oh wow!! Will your boat be at Crick? OMG I bet you can’t wait! Swan boats are lovely, we have a friend who has one! 😃 Hope we get to meet up at Crick, we’re not doing the Friday (trade day) as it’s my birthday, so may go for a meal in Crick itself, but will be there the Saturday , Sunday & Monday! See you there!! 👏🎉😃xx
Hi guys, just wanted to leave a comment for ya. Take care and see ya next week. Thanks 👍
Hi Roger, thank you so much, really kind of you! xx
Hi you lovely couple. Really enjoyed your vlog today the sunshine made for such a great day. Keep the good work up , and spring is coming fast take care Bob
Hi Bob, it was a lovely sunny day, and we really enjoyed Foxton locks, it’s such a beautiful place. So glad you’re enjoying our videos, thank you so much! xx
Another great video and very interesting seeing the locks from the boat loved it. Glad you finely found a mooring place, looking forward to your next video. xx
Hi, so pleased you enjoyed it, the locks look very different from inside! Thanks Joan! xx
Thank you for sharing your adventure! It would take much skill to pilot a 58' narrow boat. You make it look so easy. Cheers!
Thanks Dan, Martin does a good job doesn’t he, I don’t think I could do it so well. Thank you so much! xx
A lovely 'day in the life' vlog with beautiful countryside and lots of locks. 🦢 I love the swans but maybe not quite that early in the morning. 🌅
Hi Dorothy, lovely to hear from you! The views at Foxton are amazing, it’s a beautiful place, we loved it there. Those swans were really gentle, I think they are so elegant, it was 17.30 (5.30pm) so wasn’t too late. But the moon that night was just stunning, we’ve never seen it so bright, everything looked so beautiful. Thanks Dorothy! xx
@@JulieandMartinonRIB Evening would be better for the swans coming for food for sure. When you live along wildlife you don't get to make the choices. ☺
Great video, really enjoyed watching. Many thanks to you both. ❤
Aww thank you so much, really lovely of you to say! xx
Thank you for this informative and beautiful vlog, I really enjoyed it! 🤗
Hi Donna, so pleased you enjoyed it, thank you so much! xx
Loved the vlog & neither of you split your trousers, which was a bonus 😅
Haha 😝 thank goodness we didn’t, that would’ve been an entirely different vlog! 😳😂 Thanks Chris! xx
Fantastic video both, best thing about Thursday is your video but I would not like to navigate my way down that flight of locks! Hope you have a wonderful week and I will look forward to your next video
Hi Edward, that’s a lovely thing to say! Those Foxton locks are lovely, but like you say, I wouldn’t want to be driving lol 😂 Thank you so much! xx
Great video as always looks a lovely place and hard work least it's not frozen over many thanks take care both of you xx 😊
Hi David, luckily we both enjoy doing the locks and it’s such a beautiful setting! Thank you! xx
Dear Julie and Martin. We so enjoy your videos every week. We visited Foxton Locks a couple of years ago and it was so lovely watching you go down them in Rhapsody in Blue and seeing them in action. Your description of how they work and last weeks description of the incline plane have been so interesting! We look forward to your videos every week. Thank you so much. All good wishes Tessa and Ian.
Hi Tessa and Ian, aww such a lovely comment! Hearing this really makes it all worthwhile. We love the canals and working locks etc and hopefully this comes across in our videos. Thank you so much, and for the coffee, you’re so kind xx
What a Cracking Pair of HOOTERS 😂
😂😂😂🤣 Aren’t they just! They are sooo loud! 😳 Hope you’re both ok xx
@@JulieandMartinonRIB haha.
Yeah we’re good thanks Julie. Counting down to our next Holiday. Would love to go to Crick and see you both there but can’t get there. Il see you on the Cut ❤️
@@naughtystudios aww that’s a shame, but if you do manage to get to go for one of the days, let us know and we’ll come and meet you! I’m sure we’ll all get to meet up sometime soon xx
I love your videos Guys, they always put me in a good mood :)
Aww Dee, what a lovely thing to say, that’s made our day, thank you! xx
good vid cranking it thanks lee
Thanks Lee, so glad you enjoyed it! xx
Good afternoon both of you. You're right about the canals being designed pre-computers. I suspect in those days it was cardboard aided design ! enjoy. Take care, Peter,
Absolutely, and still going strong today, no buttons or switches in sight, just simple straightforward logical engineering. Thanks Peter xx
Great video guys! You're my ASMR now. Psst Martin, upgrade the horn noise to a train horn or cruise ship horn? We won't tell Julie! 😁😂
Hi Doc! What a lovely compliment, thank you so much! OMG a train horn?!!!! Good Lord, I’ll need earplugs!! 😳😂🤣 Thank you for a lovely comment, we really appreciate it xx
Ps the boat looks brilliant bob
Thanks Bob, Martin does a good job keeping the boat looking good, thank you! xx
I just can't stop smiling 😊
Aww that’s so nice to hear, thank you Jim xx
Just passed you guys on the way to market harborough.. really enjoy your vlogs..we are in the duchess
We saw you go past and did see you waving, but thought you were waving to someone on the towpath lol, we’ll be going down to Mkt Harborough in the next few days, so we may see you there. Thank you so much! xx
Hi guys great vlog as always goes so quickly when you got help but like you I hate heights looks like you going to fall off the end off the world and as for them swans they were so good no hissing no biting ow yes Martin got his job back yes the best bit off vlog scaring the number twos out off you lol but might be better with three or four horns Martin well that moon so bright you could have done a night trip on boat there only one thing missing on your boat a cute dog therse a thought for you guys you no viewers love dogs more people will watch and you get more money from viewers figgers stay warm and safe roll on next Thursday best day off week with good friends
Hi Nicholas, yes don’t think I could drive the boat going down those locks, like you say it looks like you’re going over the edge! 😳 Thought you’d like the hooters! Crikey they are loud!! My peace is shattered at the front of the boat now lol 😂 We love dogs, but don’t have plans to get one at the moment, but never say never 🤪 Those swans were lovely! Thanks Nicholas xx
Hey guys another great vlog with great views and some stunning photography. I was wondering how your getting on with the reflex heater 🤔
Hi Stewart, lovely to hear from you, such a lovely thing to say, especially as we only use iPhones! Strange you should ask this, as we were thinking of doing an update on the Refleks and how we find it, so perfect timing! We’re loving it, we find it so much easier than the multi-fuel stove we had before. It doesn’t have that ‘cozy by the fire’ feel, or the smells and sounds that go with a real fire, however the boat is always warm, you don’t have to worry about storage for coal/wood etc, just a couple of spare jerry cans, you can adjust the heat if the weather gets colder, or simply turn it off if you get too warm, so easy and versatile. Costs for coal/logs versus diesel fluctuates all the time, but mostly they are on a par, sometimes cheaper, but mostly around the same. Thanks Stewart! xx
An update would be great as I watched the install vlog first I had ever heard of this type of heater. The narrow boat that James built has one fitted and I am interested if they heat the boat better as narrow boaters always complain about the heat distribution throughout the boat.
@@JulieandMartinonRIB
@@stewartscales1564 we’ll see what we can do. Thanks Stewart! xx
Thank you so much for sharing your vlogs. Loved watching them. Could you so kindly explain to your viewers how you know when your water tank is full. The old method way? Water spilling all over the bow of the boat or is there a gadget? Thanks 😊
Hi Jenny, so pleased you are enjoying our videos and lovely to have you onboard! Of course we can, next time we film getting water I’ll explain, but I’ll quickly answer your question now. We do have a water gauge inside the boat, so we know when we’re getting low, similarly when filling we can see when we’re nearly full. When the water comes up to the top it overflows into the well deck and we have a hole either side fi4 the water to run off. Usually when it’s getting near the top one of us will stay with it until it’s full. Hopefully that all makes sense, thank you Jenny! xx
Thank you so much. All the best 😊
Wow, you've got to have nerves of steel to pilot the boat down those locks. It looks for all the world like you're just sailing off into the air, off the side of a cliff or something. Yikes!
Exactly that Chris! I don’t think I could do it, Martin does a great job! It looks totally different from outside, so it was good to see things from Martin’s perspective. Also I was struck by how loud it is inside the locks too, it was difficult to keep the sound levels relatively equal when editing, hopefully it was ok. Thank you so much Chris xx
Thank you very much for sharing take care great video All the best
Thank you Lilo, so glad you enjoyed it! Thank you! xx
Just out of interest your swans may have been brothers as they were male, so calm at the time of year!
Hadn’t thought of that Nigel, thank you! xx
