Wow! That was a great interview Doug with a great response from Steve. Well done sir! I have been a huge fan of Marillion for almost 40 years. They are my fave band because there is usually at least two or three songs on every album that speak to what I am going through at that time. Marillion's music has gotten me through many rough times. You must go see them live to fully understand how beautiful and powerful their music is. I have also been lucky to meet and chat with all of them over the years. They are wonderful people as well as amazing musicians. Thanx for this!
I met Steve in 1989 for the Season'e End tour because my former drummer and I won backstage passes. We got to hang out with all of them and they were great people. Steve was so charismatic and different than Fish, but hte audience embraced him from the get go. An amazing sweet vibe from a billiant singer and lyricist.
Doug as a meloman you should definitely keep Marillion as your regular band to listen to. So innovative and ambitious. Me personally went to see then live 4 times already
Really enjoyed this! Doug, You should definitely look into attending Marillion’s weekend In Montreal in July this year. It will be pretty much the same as he described for the Poland weekend, and the best way to truly get the whole Marillion experience.
This is an amazing little podcast, thanks to both Steve Hogarth and to host Doug - some great questions and revelations in here. I'm gaining more respect for Steve and his thought process and lyric writing as a result of having heard this - and yes, as a Marillion fan since 1985, I already knew his vocals, songwriting, and musical sense to be top notch. (Very few could have followed so credibly - nay, brilliantly - in the oversized shoes of Fish after he left the band; after all, Fish really was in a league of his own among leaders of progressive bands, but Steve in his own right has done a great job with the band, as Fish himself acknowledges.) Plus ... Steve displays a much deeper understanding of what's going on in the world-at-large than most of us, probably by virtue of extensive reading and education but also due in no small part to having been tasked to come up with these serious and obviously politically very hard-hitting lyrics. Good job, Mr "h", and thanks to you, Doug, for inviting him on!!
Seen Marillion so many times live. Met Steve H and the band a few years ago. They so appreciate their fans and are very down to earth. Pre ordered all their albums from when they started doing that. Please do Neverland live 2009. Love your musical insights and incredible breadth of musical knowledge. One or two more Nightwish wouldn’t hurt 😆 Thank you sir!
Brave and Marbles are my favorite’s also. Brave transported into another world the first dozen times I heard it, when it was released. So incredibly emotional.
With Friends From The Orchestra is one of my go to albums in my art studio. So proud and pleased to have Marillion in my life. I have just bought my ticket for my second Marillion show. Great interview, Doug.
Doug, I don’t know how I was so late in finding this video. I am embarrassed. Thank you for doing this interview. Marillion have been my favorite band for such a long time. You have to see them. It’s truly different. I recently saw them during their three nights in Montreal in July 2022 and have my tickets for 2023. By chance I had moment to chat with H in Montreal and was able to thank him for all the great music. I don’t think any band is like them and no one has fans like them. Try to attend Montreal. You won’t believe the warmth, love and energy!
Oh, Doug this was so amazing, Steve is a great conversationalist and a brilliantly observational artist. I have listened to many of his interviews and podcasts. In 2018, I had the privilege of seeing Marillion in concert in Grand Rapids, Michigan. I have to say, it was probably the musical event of my life because it was so good. We drove nearly 8 hours through an ice storm to see them and it was so worth the effort to get there. Should you ever get the opportunity to see Marillion, by all means, you must do it. I knew of Marillion prior to Steve Hogarth and he really gave the band, in my opinion their legacy, their raison d’être. He is the man for the job, for sure. Thank you, Doug!!
Great Doug. I knew you would became a Marillion fan. That's why I kept on repeating it in the comments under your reaction videos. Nice interview. Please try to interview their guitarist Steve Rothery!
That was entirely delightful, gentlemen. Cool that he touched on the Beatles role in birthing the progressive music era. I am most desirous of seeing "Get Back" and hearing more Marillion. His talk of freedom as being an epiphenomenon of his manumission from the music industry was most edifying. Peace and love y'all. db

Steve Hogarth, my top vocalist since hearing Seasons end in the 80s. It will be a difficult year knowing I can't leave New Zealand due to restrictions and get to one of the weekends. I will just have to keep listening to the new album which in my opinion is one of their best.

That was a great interview! I've been listening to Marillion since the mid 80's. It took me a while to accept that Fish was gone. It's hard to realize that Steve Hoggarth has been with Marillion for so many years, actually much longer than Fish. But, as long as Steve Rothery is around, I will be a fan.
Fish was in Marillion for seven years. H has been in Marillion for 33. When they sang 'Lavender' together on stage once, even Fish said that it was h's song now. It's good to know they are friendly. And both versions of the band are extraordinary IMHO. I am a VERY big fan of Mr. H., but Clutching at Straws is also one of my favorite Marillion albums ever. One doesn't exclude the other
Fantastic conversation between the two of you.... I felt like I was at a bar drinking a pint and listening to the both of you talking about music and how H and the band start the process of making an album!! Great stuff!! Now let's see if we can get a U. S. Tour from the boys!! 😎😁
Always loved Marillion but when Season's End came out after the Fish era it took my breath away. Hogarth is a great singer. HAVE YOU EVER THOUGHT ABOUT DOING A REACTION VIDEO TO JEFF WAYNE'S WAR OF THE WORLDS?

Hello Doug. Great videos you share. And Wow, how exciting to have Steve do an interview with you. I love the band, love the music. Would love to see Marillion come across the pond and do some shows here in America soon, this summer/fall would be nice 👍🏻
Doug you should really check out their live masterpiece Neverland (out of season 2009) This will blow you away.. Steve Hogarth's emotional vocals and Steve Rothery's stunning guitar work make magic together 🖤🖤
So glad these guys push on without the standard commercial support. Screw radio...It is so hard to find new bands. I still cling to Marillion and all the older bands I grew up with.
Hi! I am new here! Literally NO ONE is going to recommend you this one because they are not that famous but they are definitely worthy. A band that mixes jazz with ecuadorian folklore called PIES EN LA TIERRA which means feet on the ground. Recommend “Kakotekawe” and “Siciliana” two of my favorites. Love your channel
Thank you for a fantastic interview! Very insightful, thoughtful and honest as Steve Hogarth always is. I would suggest you to review the album that he mentioned from his collaboration with Isildurs Bane. "Peripheral Vision" is a stand-out piece but there are other beautiful tracks on that album. After that you can proceed also to their two collaboration albums with Peter Hammill being the last one, "In Disequilibrium" an absolute masterpiece.
If you react to "Neverland", the best of the many live versions, IMHO, and that of many other fans, is the 2009 "Out of Season" dvd version. Make sure your wife stays beside you for that particular reaction. She could wave at the camera and whisper "Here I am." ua-cam.com/video/l3NhNz9-EOA/v-deo.html
@@traumadiffuser3705 I may perhaps have spent the entire show standing behind Rothers' guitar amps wearing h's spare in ears in case he keeled over, but I couldn't possibly comment :D
Excellent interview. As others have said, the Marillion Weekend in Montreal weekend of 1st July is well worth a visit. It also happens to be Canada Day and the Montreal Jazz Festival. Cone on up to the Great White North... I'll stand you a beer or two. (And I am sure if Steve finds out you are coming up something in person could be arranged)
Please, react to "Neverland" from the Out of Seasons 2009 DVD and, as Hogarth himself just mentioned, "The Space" from Royal Albert Hall. I´d love to her your profound reaction on them. It´s the most intense holistic Marillion experience. Pure magic. Hogarth reveals all he is. I followed your explorational journey of my 40-year-favourite band, and I turn 50. Marillion live is something different, there is a certain feeling of unity, congeniality and humanity spreading in among thousands of people. They all become soulmates as they sing along being touched by guitar solos and connecting their own experiences with their essential lyrics. I´d love to her your profound reaction on these performances.
Richard Barbieri was not only the keybord-player for the band Japan. Perhaps ever so slightly more relevant to this channel is the fact that he is also the keyboarder of Porcupine Tree.
@@isthatmysandwich I think he just takes it for granted. PT were Marillion's support band on several occasions in PT's early days (saw them play in London together) and Steve Wilson is a friend of the band and did a bunch of mixes for them. So I bet he just thinks that everyone knows. And to be fair, if you are 50+ and from the UK, you'll probably know Japan better than PT, just because they were so big in the 1980s
@@mortenbay I’m 64, live in the UK, never was a fan of Japan but I am a big fan of Porcupine Tree. Going to see them in London in November. I was just a bit surprised that’s all 😎😎. It was a great interview though.
Yeah I think it was very refreshing for Steve that Doug came in as a new fan, having heard a song from 2016 first. I liked the perspective of Doug's questions. And at least Steve didn't get the "So how was it, filling those big shoes [har har] when Fish left?" That he still gets asked that after 33 years by some classic rock journalists is really baffling to me.
@@jellemaartenlof3260 You can almost see H dreading the question then relaxing when the questions took a different turn. Maybe it was agreed beforehand but, regardless, well done to Doug for resisting if he was aware of the history.

Interesting that Steve raised the topic of his lyrics being played back to him in Argentina. It will floor you as to how great it is!!!!!
How did I miss this ?! Such an interesting conversation between the two of you! I'm so glad I found your channel. Music is a huge part of my life and I enjoy your videos a lot! Just became a member so I won't miss another one. 😊 Elise from Norway.
One doesn't exclude the other
Nice interview sir. I rediscovered them about 10 years ago and they were instantly my favourite band.
I wish I could Like this video more than once! What an absolutely lovely human being is h. Thank you Doug for doing this interview and for some great questions and discussions. When the interviewee says to you "I could talk to you all day" you're doing something right!
Hello Doug. Great videos you share. And Wow, how exciting to have Steve do an interview with you. I love the band, love the music. Would love to see Marillion come across the pond and do some shows here in America soon, this summer/fall would be nice 👍🏻
Nice one, enjoyed every second of it, thank you both for this wonderfull conversation.
Doug you should really check out their live masterpiece
Neverland (out of season 2009)
This will blow you away.. Steve Hogarth's emotional vocals and Steve Rothery's stunning guitar work make magic together 🖤🖤
Really honest, interesting and moving interview, well done both.
Love your channel
my heart is full -thank you Doug
!!!
I was there 2009 in Port Zealand
@@traumadiffuser3705 I may perhaps have spent the entire show standing behind Rothers' guitar amps wearing h's spare in ears in case he keeled over, but I couldn't possibly comment :D
The version on A Sunday Night Above the Rain is my favorite version.
Excellent work as ever, Doug. 👍
Great interview. It's always interesting to hear new perspectives.
H liked this talk very much….when canoe hear the reaction of the next song from this album
Beautiful interview
"None of us read music." - I could never imagine that.
What a good interview!
Richard Barbieri was not only the keybord-player for the band Japan. Perhaps ever so slightly more relevant to this channel is the fact that he is also the keyboarder of Porcupine Tree.
I was surprised that H never mentioned Porcupine Tree.
@@isthatmysandwich Amsterdam for me in November! 🙌
Well done Doug for not mentioning Fish.
If you want to explore the depth is Steve Hogarth listen to Isladur Bane colors not found in nature. H wrote and performed the lyrics with a full brass band. Absolutely stunning.
Interesting that Steve raised the topic of his lyrics being played back to him in Argentina. I have been involved in research where we have taken lyrics from artists with an extensive repertoire including Bob Dylan, Neil Young, David Bowie etc in all these artists their lyrics follow 3-4 distinct themes
It is so rare to hear an interviewer who knows how to be quiet and leave space for the interviewee to expand and shine. Well done Doug!
Best band in the world
Excellent interview Doug! Two class acts together!
You are my hero Doug.
Isildurs Bane is a pretty cool group. You should add them to the list of songs to cover!
Please analyze Care.
Fantastic interview.
At the end of the interview, Steve H says he wants to do another interview with you. How about an interview doing through the new album song by song ...
