"Music suspends time to help us emotionally" Well said Doug. Music also has a way of bringing us together regardless of differences. Except when it comes to Fish vs Hogarth apparently.
People always want to make it a competition: why not Fish AND Hogarth? Fish-era was probably more consistently great, but Hogarth-era has had plenty of highlights, including my favorite Marillion album in Brave.
My friend you have just scratched the surface of what is Marillion. Possibly one of the most underrated bands of all time, and certainly one of the greatest live acts ever experienced.

Doug, Marillion's manager was asked about this video and she said Steve Hogarth saw it and has been sharing it on WhatsApp to other people. Excellent reaction as always, congratulations!
No band on the planet puts as much feeling and emotion into their music as Marillion - Estonia is one of the best songs ever written imo! Great comments and contributions Doug , top man!
There’s the Marillion with Fish; Clutching at Straws, is a great album. And there’s Marillion after Fish left. More great albums to choose from. Afraid of sunlight, is one of my favorites.
Clutching at Straws never gets old for me. Love that album. It's especially good listening while driving a car alone at night on a quiet, dark highway.
I'm Estonian and I'm amazed I didn't know this song existed until saw it on your channel. Thank you for it. Urmas Alender, a beloved musician in Estonia, also sank that day. Some survivors have said that he clung on a chimney and was singing before sinking with the ship. He also had songs about how sea would take his life.
My wife loved this song, when she passed away suddenly, at only 31yrs of age, i couldn't think of anything more appropriate to play for her at her service. Whenever i hear this song, it makes me think of her, an i smile at her memory.
So sorry for such a devastating loss. The song always brings me to tears, remember when the news mentioned the Estonia had sunk with so many trapped inside or drowned in the ice cold water. Heart breaking 💔 😢
Fantastic. So glad to finally see a reaction to one of Marillion's best songs. I saw them on this tour, and H told the story of how he met Mr. Barney and how the song came about. His sympathy for the victims was so genuine, and we could tell that Steve had been deeply affected by the tragedy. His lyrics are so perfect. This version is great in a different way, with the classical instruments, but the studio version is also fantastic with the Russian balalaika in the choruses and Mark Kelly playing the instrumental part of the bridge section with a perfect synth patch. Great, great song.
I LOVESD your remarks on this song, Marillion is a remarkable band, their music is supremely challenging ...the song Brave especially, or The Great Escape.
You are starting to understand why Marillion’s music connects so emotionally for many fans. As others have suggested. Try The Great Escape, The Space ( live at Royal Albert Hall with the same friends from the orchestra) or Neverland.
YES! Finally someone covers this! I have recommended this in several creators' comments - maybe even yours. You're the first person I've seen to actually cover it. For those who haven't... "their loss". They're missing out on brilliance. It's a bonus that you're one of the rare people on YT who actually understands and can talk about/break down the music. Marillion is half-jokingly referred to as "The best band you've never heard of". For years that's been pretty much true. It seems like that might be changing these days, as more people are introduced to their music, which is wonderful. Marillion deserves so much more recognition. This is gorgeous and, as you say, "heart breaking" song. It's far and away my favorite recorded performance of it. It's one of those songs I wish everyone could hear and appreciate as you do. Steve Hogarth has one of the most emotive voices I've personally heard in progressive music. I doubt he's ever phoned in a performance in his life. Also, the smile that keeps returning to the face of the violinist on the far left (their right), in front of Steve Hogarth, is infectious.
I came to Marillion only about 5 years ago and their music is wonderful. So many of their songs you should give your educated treatment to! The first thing I heard was "Neverland" I would recommend This song. Many thanks I love what you do, and how you do it. Keep on Keeping on,as They say!
I went to a sound check in Manchester where Steve Rothery had said he’d sign my guitar. It was one of his acoustic Farida guitars. Steve Hogarth came up and said ‘who are you?’. He spent 20 minutes talking with me. What a band, so talented and humble
Marillion's songs are simply way above what anyone else in the rock/pop music genre is writing and recording and Estonia particularly, among others, is the proof.
so much going on in this song. and besides the lyrics so emotionally conveyed theres a driving 2/4 over 3/4 energy which really is the driving force behind the hopefullness. what a gem❤
Doug, that was your best episode yet! Yes, Marillion is a remarkable band--IMHO the most underrated progressive rock band of them all. Check out the DVDs of their various Marillion Weekends and you will see how much their fans adore them. Given your classical background, I'm not surprised you appreciated their With Friends From the Orchestra, but there is also a live version called With Friends at St. David's. I think you would really enjoy that.
I've been a fan of Marillion for 40 years and have never been disappointed with anything they produce. The with the Orchestra album was great and even better when I got to see it live .
Yes it is! After Fish left then band I had trouble accepting the new singer, but when I finally got the Brave album I realized Marillion was a different band, just as good as it was before.
"Don't ask me why I'm doing this, You wouldn't understand, You're asking the wrong questions, You couldn't understand, A bridge is not a high place, The fifty-second floor, Icarus would know a mountain isn't far to fall when you've fallen, When you've fallen from the moon..." Best ever lyrics!!

I am very familiar with this song - I've listened to it, possibly, a hundred times or more over the year - and yet I really enjoyed listening along with you. You seemed genuinely touched by it and that in turn seemed to increase it's power
I'm glad to see someone so enthused by Marillion. Death and water are recurring themes in Steve Hogarth's writing. I would like to add my voice to those suggesting Ocean Cloud as the best of the band's longer songs. The Great Escape is a bit like the best bits of Marillion crammed into a relatively short piece. It gives a good picture of what the band is about.
I see now now 136k subscribers. Wow. And from a standing start, earlier this year. But great videos like this show just why that is. And why Doug so well deserves every one of them.
Ive loved Marillion since I first heard them in 1980. I cry like a kid to most of their music as it’s so beautiful. Fish was brilll but H is another level. Keep going with Marillion, they will never cease to surprise you.
Doug....being a classically trained artist, I knew Marillion would touch your soul, especially enhanced by this orchestra. Be sure to check out "Go", "Seasons End", "Easter" and "The Sky Above The Rain"....all accompanied by this orchestra. Marillion will hook you for life...buddy.
Marillion have made A LOT of stunning and profound music and are just about to release even more next year. I have heard over 30,000 albums covering all the so called ‘greats’ and I reckon they have made made more exceptional songs than virtually anyone. I don't like everything they have done but at their best they are right up there with the greatest ever songwriters! A secret that is still hidden to a lot of people who appreciate wonderful music. You are doing a great job to change that so you have a new subscriber here. Thanks
I can tell you really liked this one Doug. Great philosophical discussion Doug. Love the strings and vocals were great. Beautiful song. Kudos to who requested this one. Great music, you just don't listen to, it's something you experience. It elicits an emotional response.
My absolute favourite Marillion song, as you said. Someone below mentions Afraid of Sunlight, a close second. Thank you for spending the time with this remarkable music and taking my suggestion.*blush* I am so glad you enjoyed it so much. Sorry to hear of the loss of your grandmother. I loved your thoughts on how it addresses grieving and how music can suspend time. A quote from Alan Moore, "Sooner or later, all the people and places that we loved are finished, and the only way to keep them safe is art. That's what art's for. It rescues everything from time."
Doug, the story of the sinking and the British survivor’s experience is unbelievable. Really worth some research if your into that sort of thing……then the song will really blow you away !!!!
Estonia is a great song written when they were already experienced musicians. It would be interesting to see an episode on Grendel, an amazing 17 minute epic they wrote when they were in their early twenties.
@@nornog At least some of he band members hate that song and use it as a punchline. I'd rather see Doug react to more recent epics like "Ocean Cloud", "This Strange Engine", "Gaza" or "The Invisible Man" where they perfected their own style of epic songwriting. They are way past imitating Gabriel period Genesis at this point in their career.
Doug, I’ve watched your Genesis and the other Marillion reaction and thought how awesome it is that a classical composer can get this amount of joy from this music. As a fan of both I tend to cut through albums not really giving a listen, and I decided today I was going to watch your reaction to Estonia. Absolutely beautiful piece and you’re absolutely right!
This song was played in Steve Hogarth´s dad funeral. He loved this song. Steve has an enormous amount of deep and emotional lyrics and he is also a breathtaking singer. My thoughts to my own father who left us 5 years ago today, but he lives in our hearts and minds forever. Hello from Argentina!
We’ve been blessed with the music of Marillion from their Genesis to Present. Who’d ever think this band would be where they are now and the impact they’ve made on the listeners. I love them all beyond words. The world needs them....
Watching your wet eyes as you talk about your grandmother...dude...I'M NOT CRYING, YOU'RE CRYING! I feel you, sir. Lost mine a few years ago. I know the original version of this song, first time for this version. It feels fast, but Hogarth (singer) KILLS IT. I'm more a fan of the first singer Fish, but Hogarth is a beast on this one. Very powerful lyrics, beautiful song. I enjoy your reactions. You offer a new vision and better analysis than most. Well done. If I may suggest...The first three tracks of Marillion's Clutching at Straws are a GLORIOUS trio. They very much flow together in terms of pacing and story. Literally the best opening 3 songs I can think of on any album. Hotel Hobbies, Warm Wet Circles and That Time of the Night. If you've got 14 minutes, check them out together.
Thank you, Doug, for sharing a great piece of music with so much depth and sympathy. I am especially touched because I visited Estonia a few weeks bevor the tragedy (July-August 1994) and made friends there. And since many of the victims were Estonian and Estonia is a tiny country I later learnt that so many (if not the majority of) estonians know or even come from a family who has lost a loved one. I assume they would love the Marillion song and you commenting on it.
Jon Lord’s Concerto for Group and Orchestra should be on the schedule Because with that piece al those orchestra and band concerts started. 1969 performed at Royal Albert hall London first time by DeepPurple 1999 performance after lost scores rewritten also by DeepPurple 2012 recorded in studio just before the passing of mr Jon Lord. I am very familiar with this song - I've listened to it, possibly, a hundred times or more over the year - and yet I really enjoyed listening along with you. You seemed genuinely touched by it and that in turn seemed to increase it's power
Love me some marillion now and then. Fantastic band. Spiritual
I second that
@@jamesderekeikeland9048 3rd. I do believe Ocean Cloud is a must
‘Lost at Sea’ off the ‘How We Live’ album is a pretty special song too 👍
Totally agree 👍👍
I see now now 136k subscribers. Wow. And from a standing start, earlier this year. But great videos like this show just why that is. And why Doug so well deserves every one of them.
Ive loved Marillion since I first heard them in 1980. I cry like a kid to most of their music as it’s so beautiful. Fish was brilll but H is another level. Keep going with Marillion, they will never cease to surprise you.
Never heard this before. This is why I listen.
Probably my favourite Marillion song... along with Neverland ..(favourite from the Hogarth-era)
Neverland is epic.
Grendel is a must.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo 😆
Wasn't grendel one of their first pieces and fish's "audition peice", as his audition was to write lyrics to this instrumental they had.
Doug, I’ve watched your Genesis and the other Marillion reaction and thought how awesome it is that a classical composer can get this amount of joy from this music. As a fan of both I tend to cut through albums not really giving a listen, and I decided today I was going to watch your reaction to Estonia. Absolutely beautiful piece and you’re absolutely right!
such a fine band. I am seeing them again later this month.
I've been listening to this since its release and you just gave me back the emotion of the first listenings. Thank you. More Marillion, please.
Never knew what it was about... Thanks for that.. I was late coming to know their music. This is a beautiful song.
Jon Lord’s Concerto for Group and Orchestra should be on the schedule
Because with that piece al those orchestra and band concerts started.
1969 performed at Royal Albert hall London first time by DeepPurple
1999 performance after lost scores rewritten also by DeepPurple
2012 recorded in studio just before the passing of mr Jon Lord.
I am sure you will have a stunning time.
Love Marillion
all Marillion songs will be your favourite
Suggestion: Marillion , Clutching at straws the whole album
I commented on another of your videos about Marillion. Didn't know you had already heard them. Fantastic group. I first heard them with Misplaced Childhood, 1985. Hauntingly great lyrics on that one.
Nice reaction 👍🏻👍🏻
I suggest 'Ocean Cloud' and 'Gaza' (live).
Two great and both long songs with awesome music and lyrics...

This is a stunning song but live is totally breathtaking.
