It's been raised and is now the 11foot8+8 bridge. 12'4" is still enough to scrape the top of typical box trucks; but not to can-opener them. Bigger trucks could still be destroyed; but semi drivers who know what they're doing will have a GPS that knows not to send them under low bridges. Which means we'll probably see a SWIFT trailer get destroyed there at some point...

Don't fear, Penske has trucks that are high enough to hit eben an 11 Foot 8+8 Inch bridge ;-)

This happens all the time at one of our offices. The driveway goes up a hill at an an angle and we inform anyone making deliveries that they need to approach and enter the driveway southbound or they will get stuck. Inevitably, someone tries to enter northbound and in making the tighter than 90 degree turn into the driveway, their DOT bumper or lift gate always hits the pavement and will put them into the exact same stuck situation as happened here. Lots of gouges in the roadway from previous incidents, but nobody seems to notice and take heed of our instructions....

Those of us with large RVs are aware of dips at the end of a drive. I have never gotten stuck but have dragged a hitch once or twice. In the old days, they use to hook a tow truck onto the back, lift, and pull forward to un-stick them. I've seen it done a few times but you have to have room to move forward. The ability to side-pull is a game changer.

It never ceases to amaze me how much these rollbacks are capable of doing! I was thinking the truck would have tipped over, in the absence of outriggers to help stabilize it.

I love the fact that I got to see you use the homemade side puller. I remember commenting that you should build one some time last year or so. That was one of the best things I welded up using stuff from Harbor Freight and it made the job so much easier, especially when you work on major highways and expressways and you don't have to shut down a lane to do a recovery. Stay safe Ron.

I really like that side pull attachment. A lot better than a simple redirect off the deck. Perhaps Miller should look into adding that as an option. A suggestion for a design mod - make the top of the frame with the top roller a gate. That would eliminate removing the roller and feeding the end of the cable through, just open the gate, drop in the cable anywhere along its length and close the gate.

Good job on your side job winch fairlead. Glad you used the snatch block to not put to much on the side roller of the fairlead. I had a coworker who tried to pull a F350 dually out putting the winch cable about 50 to 60 degrees on the right side roller causing the metal the roller is pinned through to being bent causing the retainer clip to break. The side rollers are really not designed to carry a bunch of weight .

I had a truck driver get stuck like that. All I did is just disconnected the air ride valve from the rod and manually made it think it's overloaded to fully inflate the air ride. He was able to move it under it's own power. After that just reconnected the rod and valve and that was it.

Hey Ron I think it would be super helpful to everyone watching if you could let us know what people should expect to pay if they need to hire someone for one of the jobs you are doing. I know you always respect the customers privacy so you couldn't tell us exactly what you charged, but people getting a rough idea of some of these more common tow jobs costs could save people from getting ripped off. Love the videos man, keep it up.

Pricing is usually from, "Oh that's not bad" to " Oh my God, I'll need to rob a bank". Seriously, many times the pricing depends on the vehicle being towed, how far away it is and what needs to be done to recover it. A simple quick pull in my area runs about $100.00 with no more than a 20 mile round trip. However if you need a big wrecker the price goes way up quick. One place I know get's $500.00 just to start the engine and move the wrecker. Then it's so much a mile and charges for each piece of equipment like straps/chains/bags used.

Ron this reminds me of what happened right in our lot at work a few weeks back. I get a text from a firend who works for a larger towing company company (runs one of there rotators) . Asks if the box truck is stuck in our lot and how bad? So I take a walk and sure enough the same size box truck with a drop gate is stuck....but because someone left there liftgate down.... I see the driver sitting in the cab and say I can get you unstuck and hit the up switch it moves and the truck rolls back on to the brakes alittle but is free. But the driver freaks out and runs from the cab sayin he’s stuck. And puts the gate down and jams the truck again.... I tryed to tell him again that his company will get a big charge for a simple fix as my buddy pulled up . He spent over a hour helping the idiot get free again and 2 hours after that getting called by state police to tow that same driver hit 2 cars and they put the driver out of service for the accident and dot violations.

    • @RonPratt
      @RonPratt  4 роки тому +2

Typically I would have taken our 4024, 20 ton towing/recovery unit on a Peterbilt 337. If the box truck had been loaded, I definitely would have taken the 4024. I was on-call that weekend and had the flatbed at my house. So....I took what I had on-hand and made it work. That little truck is tougher than it may look. I've got a video in the works showing a job I did with it that I really SHOULD have used a bigger truck, but, again, I made due with what I had. In the upcoming video, it was quite a drive, we were given incorrect weights on the equipment, and we were fighting a storm system coming in. So once we got on scene we had to go with what we had on-site. If I'd had time I would have called for the 4024, as I said earlier. Thanks for watching and God bless.

Ron Pratt It came that easily I could tell it wasn’t loaded. Therefore good thing you had your new flatbed it was a easy job for that but if it was loaded, then yes the 20 ton wrecker be the one for the job. Good thing you didn’t have to call it because the truck wasn’t loaded and you already were there. We have a peterbilt wrecker same as yours also, and the flatbed. Easy job that was 👍🏼

Ron, your words "to the believers " about praying for the victims of accidents are really delightful. Sounds like you appreciate your Creator. Years ago in Australia kids crossing the road were told " look left, look right, look left again" but in time it was noted they were "doing " it out of rote and not really seeing the threats. Have you noticed how many quote faith but fail to actually meditate on what they're saying? For example folks "know Jesus" as a babe in the manger or nailed up. But how many think beyond that to what exactly is he doing now? What has he in mind for this earth as it goes to Sheol in a basket? We should know these things if we are to please him. Any thoughts?

I can't speak for everyone. I can only speak to my experiences and I have had several very close experiences with my God. I am a man of strong faith and try to live as He would have me live, but I know that, just like any other human being, I fall short in many areas. I have questioned. I have doubted. Occasionally, I still do, if only briefly. The experiences that I have had with Him were strong enough to prove to me beyond a shadow of a doubt that He exists. I've seen many tragedies. I've seen much good come out of those tragedies. I've seen "miracles". I could go on and on.... So, I believe and I do the best I can to live as a man of faith. As I said, I am not perfect and fall short in many areas. I cannot answer what He has in mind for anything. For me, that's where faith comes in. I have to believe that everything happens for a reason. As I said, I have seen good come from tragedy. Why the tragedy?? I can't answer. During my lowest times I felt His presence the most. I do know that scripture tells us to regarding how to live. Basically, "the Golden Rule", treat others the way you wish to be treated. First is to the Love the Lord, your God. Second is to love your neighbor as yourself. Those are the two most important "guidelines", if you will. Thanks and God bless.

Ron Pratt Ron Thankyou for your beautiful reply. I too have a deep faith and cannot imagine a day living upon my own wits. It is a great comfort to be able to say prayers of gratitude and requests for help. Not so long ago I lost my darling of 46yrs and live each day knowing we will be together again. I surprised a Christian lady when I told her that during Karen’s last 12 wks she expressed the feelings that she had no desire to be a king and a priest with the Lord in heaven. But those in that kingdom will fulfill God’s promise to the first man to have the earth be the home for mankind. She believed Gods word would “accomplish what it set out to do and not return void.” Karen and I expect that if I remain faithful to the end I will walk with her through fields of green to visit our children and grandchildren where “the lion will dwell in peace beside the lamb.” So please keep expressing your kind words of faith as you drive to jobs in your truck and provide so many of us joy in your videos.

I'd like to see the city make the person who rented the truck pay for the damage to the street. They clearly had NO idea how to drive this truck or use it properly.

This one almost seemed too simple Ron; didn't even spot a power line.
A couple of questions on this one; not doubting your judgement for a second, just curious. Also, this situation is one I'm familiar with, having worked on a car ferry with steep ramps.
Did you consider putting wooden blocks behind the rear wheels, or was it *too* stuck?
And, with your side puller; where's the advantage using it, compared to redirecting the winch line without it? The only difference I'm seeing is the rollers protecting the line and the side of your truck. Am I missing something? 😁
    Cheers for now,
    Dougie.

It might take too long to teach him to operate it. There's all those buttons and switches and stuff ya know.
I've found that it usually best to just keep it simple with rental truck drivers. It's hard to misinterpret hand signals.

That was way too easy. It took longer to rig everything and probably break everything back down again than it did to actually pull him out. How are thing going in your neck of the woods concerning the lock down? Are they opening thing up again? Maybe you could give us a quick update on how everything is going for you and your workers during this pandemic.
