  • Talk about close to home! This crash was just down the street from the shop and it was one of our good customers. Thankfully, no serious injuries. Semi truck with a flatbed trailer loaded with a crane counter-weight and crane mats rolled over, flipped, on an exit ramp. We used our 2015 Peterbilt with Miller Industries Century 1150R and our 2006 Western Star with a Vulcan V70 to upright the combination, then used the rotator to lift and reload the counterweight and mats. We had the ramp closed for just under an hour start to finish!!! Please SLOW DOWN & MOVE OVER!!! Thanks for watching and God bless!!!

      Me too, I can only guess that it's actually too big and would hang over the edge of the trailer... Ron is a smart dude and would tell them to lay it down if it was possible.
      That decking on the trailer though, I'd be ashamed to let my customers see that.

    • @spaceinvadertoo
      @spaceinvadertoo 3 роки тому +6

      The counterweight, truck, trailer, crane pads and everything else at the scene belonged to the customer. This is why Ron did not object when he pointedly remarked that Ron had no authority to tell them how to load, secure and care for their property. Otherwise he would be held liable for anything bad that happened after they left the scene. It's their stuff. Let them do with it as they will. Also be sure to include all the services fees that would have been part of any invoices billed to the customer.

      I am honestly surprised, that even with two straps, they were able to handle the load of 30,000 pounds without breaking! If it were me, I would have used chains for that job. But clearly Ron knows more of what those straps are capable of then I lol.

    • @RonPratt
      @RonPratt  3 роки тому +28

      @@stellarproductions8888 The orange strap that I used has a safe WLL of 40,000 lbs vertical at a 5:1 safety factor and the blue strap has a safe WLL of 21,200 lbs vertical at a 5:1 safety factor. So the slings used were capable of safely lifting over double the weight of the counterweight and still have been within their safe working load limits when used together. The winch cable (line) used on the main boom winches have a safe working load limit (WLL) of around 17,000 lbs. I had each line doubled so there were 4 lines to the load, which equals roughly 68,000 lbs safe WLL on the winch lines as they were configured for this lift. Again, capable of safely lifting over double the weight of the crane counterweight. The biggest thing working against me on this lift was the weight of the counterweight at the DISTANCE that it was from the rotator on the initial lift and the "short-jack" that I had to do with the left rear outrigger. This comment/response is not meant in a negative manner. It is meant only to inform and be educational. I hope this was helpful information. Thanks for watching and God bless.

    When the first hydraulics came out and began replacing the old Holmes 750s'the industry thought we had the world by the tail. Sure the brute pulling strength of most of the winches was not that of the outside gear driven Holmes winches (nothing has ever been able to match their effectiveness) but they were easier to use, quicker and safer. Then came the first generation of rotators. Great idea, incorporating the mobile crane and the wrecker in the same chassis .Now we are blessed with these new monster rotators which turns everything into a numbers game, no feel at all through the controls. However ,what a job they can do and in half the time. Too bad they still don't cost around $25,000.00.

Could be wrong on the last. Otherwise, I wholeheartedly agree. And the Sheriff (THE Sheriff, not a deputy) has blocked traffic for Ron and otherwise assisted him on quite a few occasions. They clearly a have deep mutual respect and working relationship, as well as a personal friendship. Ron has a similar relationship with many of local police and fire personnel, and works closely with them, they also cross-train together periodically. As it should be.

    I'm pretty sure that counter weight is for a 350 ton Grove truck crane. It's bottom is slightly tapered which is why it sat on the trailer and leaned a little towards the rotater. We haul ours long ways and in a 2 ft. high tube steel rack built for it. If we don't have the rack, we use extra chains.
    Standing up the they did is because that's how it goes onto the crane, and how it's designed to be picked.

    Stay safe lifting heavy stuff. We had a new truck crane drop and swing 10000kg through the engine. Welds broke from the cranes cylinder. Operator was lucky.

    Always good to see Ron and Crew recover a wreck like this quickly and efficiently.
    I think that the people trying to recover the Evergreen Ever Given in the Suez Canal could take some critical pointers from Ron...

    I like the Police and Fire attitude in your area. I'm a law enforcement officer in TX and I've watched the Netflix shows Highway to Hell and Heavy Rescue 401 and the Canadian Police are always rushing the tow company!!!!!! Not on my watch. Enough safety issues as it is without rushing everybody. I love when you were discussing with the fire guy about shutting down and he says:" I don't care. We can shut the whole thing down!" When it comes to making sure the tow driver, myself, and anyone else working the scene, I'll shut down a full four lane interstate and make Joe public go side roads or frontage roads as we have in TX. They can deal with it. You guys got a job to do. And not an easy one at that with traffic smoking your back side. Stay safe and keep up the good work!!!

    I used to hate hauling crane weights.. Finally figured out a system that worked for us so they weren't quite so top heavy.. I'd even go wide load if I needed too but mostly put em on my 3 axle single drop..

      @@stellarproductions8888 if they are Union crane operators they do not go to college but do go through the Union Operating Engineers Apprenticeship program and then be certified for specific equipment I’m a retired Union Boilermaker and we always did our own rigging and the Operators ran the equipment they did not do any rigging
