I was working for Frank doing security when he did this show with Charlie Rose. The show was edited for TV because Frank obliterated Candy Stroud and it wasn’t shown on the final edit. We stayed at the Regent hotel in downtown DC. And had a great two days.

@Zolar Czakl John had diabetes and could not make it to DC. He actually lived close by. Regarding Frank’s comment on his mail order site. Frank told me he didn’t want to see the questions in advance, so it wasn’t a setup. He didn’t know the questions in advance one the 81 interview either. When Frank passed away I continued to work for his family doing the “Z” tour in 94 and Zappa Plays Zappa in 2007 as well as security for Gail & family on personal appearances. It was a great relationship with a wonderful family.

THAT is a great story my friendnd I have a few of my own as a musician. A censored debate on cendorshiphip. Manufactured Consent with Charlie Rose.
Was this before Frank went before Congress? Or the CNN debate? He tore it up.
Franks the man and we need him.e
My question is, what was Candy like after the show?

@@artigraphmultimedia1489 this was well before the hearings. One of the early debates Frank involved himself in. We left right after the show so I have no idea how Kandy made out. I know so much was deleted from the show because Frank went off on the entire premise of the show.

Dear Mr Ash, it is such a thrill to see your interviews with Frank, you dressed up in your State Troop uniform and at the same time giving this musical genius your admiration and love for his music. Such a contrast and I am sure Mr Zappa loved being there because of the slightly weird combo you two represented. I am also sure your interviews with him had an anti drug educational effect on some. I was happy to see 2 of Franks shows in Stockholm in the seventies, he is my no 1 musician since 1973. Best regards, Ulf Hellerström of Sweden.

They tried so hard to have a serious opener for the debate, and then comes Frank's look on being described as "singer song writer" at 01:15 followed by Frank's opener: "Hogwash I say: censorship is bad for you, and sex is good for you!" 01:21.
That's what we love on Frank!

When I was about 12 or 13, I convinced a friend of mine to buy the very first Mothers of Invention album, Freak Out!. Neither of us had ever heard of the Mothers nor we were in any way familiar with the album. He gave it to me to take home to listen to it first. I put it on and, frankly, it sort of scared me. It wasn't the kind of music I was accustomed to and I didn't really like it. Not that many years later I became a big fan of Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention. The point being; when I was younger it was apparent that Freak Out wasn't intended for me - it was beyond my musical comprehension - or people of my age.

more than the platform, the generations that wish to impose law parallel to law, as Zappa said. Zappa did well & better here than at the state hearing.
the bit brings those cultural conflicts to light well.
interesting to see that Zappa broadly maintains teaching family your own way where the theist wishes to project state change to prevent being raised differently than whom accomplishes such parameters for law.

The one thing Zappa should say and I'm very surprised that he doesn't (as he was a very smart guy) is that people who set out to censor things (whether they be music, film, art, books etc) only inadvertently publicize them more as they draw attention to the contentious piece of art that people are then are drawn to, as they want to know what all the fuss is about. Human beings are naturally curious beings (have you ever wondered why people slow down at car crashes?). As Oscar Wilde once said 'There's only one thing worse than being talked about and that is not being talked about'. There's one thing I would have said to Kandy Stroud, the PMRC and Mary Whitehouse if I had ever met them is; 'You are trying to put out a bonfire with paraffin'

Frank Zappa was real, honest and authentic.
These old shows had actual morality and integrity. The stuff that comes out of the MSM today is appalling, really it’s just a bunch of clowns sensationalizing stuff while debates are reduced to just one side speaking their argument while the other side is placed on the back burner.
It’s no wonder podcasts done by smaller, independent organizations are getting more flair than the same tired MSM stations that parrot the same ideas over and over.
The best comparison to this old rock lyrics debate is some of the podcasts you see today on UA-cam and other websites.

It's absolutely fascinating however much things change, how much they remain the same. What Mr. Zappa and Ms. Stroud are really debating is the government's place in society. I believe the radio station program manager hit the nail on the head. These values need to be taught at home. Obviously, parents can't be everywhere and control everything...so...we need the government to control everything? That is EXACTLY the crux of this debate. I have no doubt that both Ms. Stroud and Mr Zappa are speaking from the heart and in their eyes, they are both speaking the truth as they see it. Both are doing exactly what they think they need to do to "save society". The problem is, and it's a HUGE PROBLEM, that when we surrender our rights and responsibilities over to any government, then we, as a society have completely abandoned any form of morality, spirituality or guidance which is absolutely supplanted by a dictatorship by definition. Dear mom and dad. Please don't shield us from life because sooner or later, we're going to have to live it ourselves, and we'll have to make our own decisions. Teach us the values and wisdom that we will need to make good decisions so that we can move forward and contribute to society. Please teach us how to think, not what to think. Every society that has gone down that road in all of human history has ended in mass death and destruction. THAT is no exaggeration... LOOK IT UP!

And Zappa would have approved a whole hell of a lot more of "Dumb Dumb Donny" and those who would choose to NOT change the Constitution.
There are laws regulating our SPEECH today, not just the music we want to put into our ear holes. Speech. We aren't even allowed to say our opinions anymore.
And speaking of Donny, I would be afraid to put a sign of his in my yard because somebody would throw a brick through my window or burn my house down, because the propaganda spout has completely tainted their minds.

"That's not how children should learn about sex." I AGREE! Rock musicians should not be doing YOUR job as a parent. You should be teaching your children the facts plus values, such as, act responsibly. Then your children will understand the lyrics as you understand them (as entertainment), and perhaps have similar opinions. Schools can also teach sex education so that STDs and unwanted pregnancy can be avoided. What we need is EDUCATION, NOT CENSORSHIP.

the main thing FZ was against was censorship. lots of his music crosses lines that kandy stroud would have wanted censored. but his output, product, or whatever you want to call it was his and perfectly legal to market to willing consumers. strictly commercial. arf.

You know the old adage that nothing is certain in life other than death and taxes? It's time to add a third item to the list: self-righteous busybodies who presume to determine on everyone else's behalf what is or isn't appropriate or within the boundaries of good taste under the guise of "protecting the children".
