Moon survived Frank, as a Dad. That's no short measure. I say that as a life-long Frank Zappa fan. And then there was Gail, her Mom. What an obstacle course. And in the end Moon turns out pretty grounded and kind hearted.
I love how truly present she was during the entire interview. And when Tom got distracted, she would entertain his whim and then gently guide him back to the original question😂 He needs someone like that in his life! And she has a great, sincere laugh, which is essential if you are going to be friends with a comedian.
I want to be fast friends with Moon too. She is so delightful, insightful, animated and articulate, and her face is so expressive, I just love it. I ran into her (you, if you happen to read this) in our mutual stomping grounds once years ago and told her how much I loved her father's music expecting a brief encounter and she was so engaging. I also said that his guitar playing was overshadowed by his many other gifts, but he was such a phenomenal guitarist. She was truly interested and was happy to speak to me about her dad's music asking if I had seen him live and so forth. I would love to have an encounter with her again having both lived full and interesting lives since then. I have her book and am looking forward to digging in (with my reading glasses, of course).
I listened to the audiobook. I was curious because I had a similar relationship with my mom. But I was reluctant. I wasn’t interested in a trauma-bonding experience. I’m glad I gave it a try. She did a great job describing how she found herself through it all. And with a sense of humor. As a certain comedian likes to say, she’s the best.
She did a good job performing the audiobook and not just reading it straight from the page. I’m glad she’s been going on Ahmet’s podcast and he’s been answering questions what he is doing with the estate. I am going to order her teas very soon.
Sorry to hear that you had childhood trauma. There's a great lady on YT (Crappy Childhood Fairy) that is incredible. She's also NOT a medical professional.
Moon is delightful in this interview. I know very little about Frank Zappa and his music being that I grew up when kids around me talked about liking his music. (I was learning violin and I hadn't yet connected music is music.) I remember not liking that they named their daughter Moon Unit. She's said so many things here that I can relate to that I experienced in my own family growing up like, the hierarchy after a parent dies, having a friend go to battle for you and, having to climb out in order to survive; I'm going to have to read her book. Thank you for your show. This is my first time here. I love it. ❤
He’s so nice. I really feel the same way about having children- not creating them, but “meeting” them, when they are born. And she is beyond great to hear. I appreciate her so much. Listened to her book on Audible, now will buy a copy, may go hear her in Woodstock NY.
How did Moon “meeting” her parents rather than respecting them through parental guidance work out for her and Dweezil? “Frank & Gail” were terrible parents who should’ve been Dad & Mom instead.
@chuckdriver8269 A person is born and parents are who they are and she managed the best she could plus overcame lot of confusion and hurt; radical acceptance and her parents wanted to be called by their first names I have always found that strange but she calls them that because that is what they wanted! She gives respect to them though her mother obviously did not give Moon respect. 😢
Really interesting to see her grown up and hear she has a book, as I was in high school when her Valley Girl was so popular. I love podcasts where there is real conversation like this one even though we know there is also promotion.
Really nice to hear moon talk about growing up and her life now. And a nice keyhole into what happened with her siblings that I never knew. Thanks for doing this moon and tom!
I just finished her book. It's so unbelievably sad. My own family of origin is kind of fubar too, so I can relate a little, but hers is on such another level.
What a sweetheart and a jewel. I've known about this heartbreak of a story for a very long time now, so I look forward to reading her book. Thank you for this interview. God bless her!~
She had been doing her own podcast for a while, and I think she’s been going on Ahmet’s a few times, and the family can talk about their own families and not just Frank and Gail.
This was lovely and watching such an amazing chemistry between the both of you with this interview was satisfying. You are both fascinating, as is your discourse. You two would make an amazing team for weekly podcasts! ❤ thank you both again!
I hope Moon knows how awesome she is and what a great person she has turned into as an adult with her own child. That she is such a talented individual. Her parents honestly should have been neutered and spayed. Who tells their children not to call them mom and dad besides 2 narcissists? who doesn't eat together, ever? who doesn't hug? And then to lie about a will and then to have your 2 younger siblings say they want to honor her will vs the will your Dad left 23 years before her death, that she lied about. She literally died knowing she would continue to cause imbalance with the 4 of you. And you with such grace, to go on his podcast and talk. I hope Ahmet and Diva see all the comments explaining the obvious and make right what your delusional and mentally unstable 'gail' did to all of you. Peace to you.
She seems like such a together girl and quite charming...shame about her mom, well, as the old saying goes, you can choose your friends, but you can't choose your relatives
Lucky me. When i was abt 20 , my then husband and i snuck into a Frank Zappa concert in Berkley California. Mud Shark. Yeah!🎉. Good for you Moon you made a life for your self . That is the way to go.
I couldn't finish it. I wanted to hear more about Moon's life not about this dude's bread-making and new sauna. Why would anyone get such an interesting person in to interview and then constantly try to inject their own normal life into things? It felt like I was watching an awkward date rather than an interview.
I agree. I just can’t connect with this new forum for interviewing that isn’t interviewing but a chatty conversation Get to the point! I want the facts.
I actually prefer conversations, rather than just raw questions. And moon is asking him questions as well. But certainly it goes too far in that direction here...@@jamieluce5808
I wish the host had actually read the book and talked less about himself! Moon, though, is beautiful, lovely, and accommodating. She seems just like one of my friends! Good for her. May she enjoy much success in her life, whatever she defines it to be.
Unless you were like a big Zapopan, you never heard his music unless it was on the Dr. Demento show, but I never really got into much. I think I was too young. I think you and your brother are pretty awesome. He’s a fantastic if not a great guitar player man can he play, you are pretty awesome all you’ve done and all you’ve endured and I’m glad to see you’re OK big fan of yours now I’m gonna go out and get the book so thank you for the interview. I appreciate it. I’m well I was never a big fan of your dad, but I’m a big fan of you and your brother now.
I remember when Moon and Dweezil were born. There will never be two other names like theirs. I love them both dearly! Really asshole thing to do GAIL! Sorry M & D. Same thing happened to me with my narcissistic sister. Sending Peace and Love!
about 12 mins in, Moon first says how it was odd to go to other kid's houses for a "normal" dinner. Tom responds with a story of his artist friend's house, and the idea of, "to be that much of an artist as Frank is" you have to even have it in the home, domestic stetting. This slightly parallels, on one hand, Salvador Dali and his turtle with an ashtray glued to it, roaming the living room, and, Magritte (sp), the footage of him, painting his weird stuff in his sitting room dressed in a suit and tie.
She's a delightful, down to earth person. Time flew. She's great conversationalist. She doesn't seem to resemble her dad at all, but I haven't seen a pic of him in decades. Loved "Hot Rats"! I will def look into Egypt expert Dr. Charlene..., MU's books, and I'm left wondering about that bread. It looked like a fallen loaf. Why didn't they have some? Did he send her off with it under her arm or what? Tom feels like a good friend should.
Tom, big fan of arugula myself. We buy Garden Girl brand arugula, organic only. It lasts a lot longer than sprint mix. Delicious choice. Thanks for the laughs
Frank's music has resonated with me since the 1st album, still does. Not surprised he wasn't a good dad. Sorry the kids didn't have a good mom either. I recall an appearance on Letterman with Moon and Frank. When asked about his kids first names Frank responded, "it's their last name that will cause them problems".
IMO, Gayle’s move was to ensure the family unit didn’t survive once she personally no longer needed it. A healthy parental relationship would prioritize their family going on in a positive way. It’s like Gayle was saying that the family only had value when Frank and she were alive, and after that, she deliberately destroyed it.
@@Starfish2145wonder if a reason Moon likes monsters has something to do with the fact her mother was one. So much of what she shares reminds me of my childhood with a woman who had seven daughters… in reality she my “mom” shouldn’t have had any of us. I am buying Moon’s book. I’m afraid it will open for me, a pandora’s box. I feel, I’m ready to hear how Moon was able to protect herself for her ‘monster’ mom, maybe hearing her story will help make sense of mine. Th as no you for this wonderful chat between two friends… I sense you will continue this relationship. Moon you are an inspiration. Be safe.
I ran a daycare, me, I was NANNY. Many kids..and I do have my own daughter as well. When I, myself was a child, I was sensitive beyond! but the caretaker kind, defending friends...always the sensitive warrior. Anyhoo...as someone who THOUGHT nurture was SO important. Yup, we are cooked...nature is who we are. the blueprint is set, and it's a blessing if we can live ourselves back to ourselves. FANTASTIC 100% 😉
Imagine getting on an author who's written a memoir about how jerk offs influence people, and straight out of the gate its 'Welcome to the show, I didn’t really read your book. I skipped through most of it' You can see Moon's face project a little more dying inside. Well done!
Mothers can really mess up a child equally as bad as an absent father. Many famous celebrity parents ended up with very poorly adjusted children. Frank was a musical genius I admired highly. Gail, I met once backstage with a sculptures cake of breasts from a bakery I worked at weekends. She was gracious and got a laugh snapping pictures. Frank always came across in interviews as an unconventional father, but allowed his kids a lot of freedom and gave them more an intellectual insight. What went on at the Zappa home can only be told by those who lived it. My heart goes out to Moon. In the Zappa family, apparently, The kids weren’t exactly alright. I wish Moon closure and happiness in writing this book.
She is such a genuine person. I am VERY happy that I always despised Zappa's music . LOL. I wonder what his "estate" was worth- his music was NON-commercial , no "hit singles" and pretty much will remain a "time capsule". I HIGHLY doubt Budweiser will be asking to use a Zappa song for a TV ad spot. So it's not like her dad was Paul McCartney . Moon reminds of one of the nice mellow / earthy art teachers I had in the 1970s when I was in grade school . I hope her book was at least on the "best seller" list so she has a nice chunk of change for retirement.
She’s so awesome . I can only imagine the stuff she has had to navigate through but she seems to have come out on the other side. Imagine your mother picking two kids over the two other kids ….and not all treated the same .
Moon is a delight! And such a great sense of humor. Frank and Gail must have had something to do with it, no? All self-made goodness? Dweezil is fantastic as well. So, two enviously fine human beings coming from chaos and dysfunction. Testimony to the human spirit, with genetics invariably playing a role.
Interesting conversation; really sad story about how Moon’s mom treated her and Dweezil. I can sort of empathize, but it was my Stepdad who changed the will, after my dear sainted mother passed. He died 5 years later and was getting loosing his mind in the last couple. We went from him wanting to come to our house for every holiday to him refusing to answer our calls and messages. Turned out my SOB stepbrother and step sisters were intentionally telling him fabricated, completely false stories about us. When he died, my sister and I only got a fraction of their combined worth. It angers me to think about it, so I try hard not to. In Moon’s case, it’s got to be even worse because everyone involved are/were blood relatives. Really sad to hear.
Here's the thing. If you are tasked with executing the wishes of a dead person, even if that dead person was not very nice, you have to honor their wishes. I was the successor trustee of my mom's estate and followed her wishes to the letter. The dead cannot speak for themselves, and although Moon believes she was dealt a bad hand, Gail had her reasons. It's the way these things work.
Thank you for clarifying this. This is what I thought! You can’t rewrite the deceased’s wishes. Intellectual property would make it more complicated. I’m really surprised she doesn’t know this.
I've been waiting for Moon's story for years!
God she's beautiful too.
she's great on WTF as well
Moon survived Frank, as a Dad. That's no short measure. I say that as a life-long Frank Zappa fan. And then there was Gail, her Mom. What an obstacle course. And in the end Moon turns out pretty grounded and kind hearted.
She was the unpaid slave for all of them. Shame on them.
Alternate view. She became the woman she is after Gail and Frank. They instilled good values.
Moon seems to be such a beautiful person, inside and out.

Well now this is a surprise…… the little I’ve seen of Moon has always been utterly delightful
She's been on Maron(WTF podcast) recently, also
