Kiddie friendly? what kind of station have you been listening to. I can't turn on the radio nowadays without hearing songs about sex or any other provocative subject. It's getting old really.
Paul Lvamp it’s not what’s on the radio, it’s what today’s artist record in general. Nothing but hip hop crap. And the RnB lost its soul when Motown died.
Did he? He certainly was lurking around the scene back then, that’s for sure. Whether he had a fucking clue or not about what was happening around him was open to much debate. He tried with punk, but the punks rejected him. The Runaways were pretty much the last relevant thing he had anything to do with. I will say this much: he really had a way with words. He was a brilliant gutter poet. One of my all time favorite Fowley lines was when he was describing the early L.A. punk scene as “Existential, excremental sexual shit at death’s door”. 🤣
Thanks for posting this. Great reflection of the times and how this "new music" was affecting the masses. I don't see any "new" or original happening like this today.
What a great find, remember watching this show sometimes as a kid on my 12" B&W. Was the last program on the three networks before they signed off if I recall. Joan is still a beautiful talented woman but god she was so ecstatically pleasing in her youth, I hate myself is such a great song played loud like she wants it to be.
This is great. I graduated high school in 1980, so Joan Jett New Wave, and punk Rock were my generation. Funny that Joan and Paul Weller rejected the term Punk Rock. At some point it became cool. Joan is very well spoken in this. Not a surprise that she was able to do what she did with the Blackhearts. Tom Snyder was underappreciated. He was on too late for me to see most of his shows, no VCR in the house. He put together a lot of topical programs like this. Blondie, the Ramones, the Sex Pistols, the Cars, the Talking heads. Punk. New Wave was great
I can remember when the word “punk” was only used derogatorily. Before punk rock, it carried an extremely unappealing connotation. If you graduated in ‘80 then I’m sure I don’t need to explain that one. Most of the original first generation punks hated the label/term, and didn’t want to be called “punk”. As I remember it, it wasn’t until some time around the turn of the decade (70’s/80’s) that it started being self-applied by those taking part in it, and was considered a badge of honor rather than an insult.
13:35 Kim Fowley, with all his campness and controversy, speaks some cold hard truth here. He clearly understood what the music was all about. I love how he calls Tom out for dismissing the music.
Damn! The Runaways' bass player sounds GREAT here! Her lines are melodic yet rhythmic. Much respect for her. Also, thanks to whoever mixed it to where it can be heard in the first place.
I would have much rather seen them in either ‘79 or ‘80. Setting Sons, Sound Affects time. That’s when they were really at their peak. Don’t get me wrong, I love stuff like “In The City”, but they got so much better when they started infusing their music with a more soulful sound.
I love this so much.Joan, bad reputation, so awesome. And Weller..Music unites.I do love all on this clip.So cool, before everyone was at each others throats!😀
+Jake Drew Tom Snyder was my favorite TV-show interviewer. So relaxed & confident. Tom Snyder´s "Tomorrow Show" was my favorite one. He seemed to be a very nice & genuine guy too. RIP Tom Snyder (1936 - 2007).
Tom Synder was great and easy to watch. He always had the 'unusual'. The Punk scene and new-wave was so much fun. If you were into it, you knew the 'whys'. Kim Fowley was so bizarre, I mean really bizarre. I didn't see Cheri or Jackie in the clip. Cheri left to go solo after a short time, but she really started with the band and gave it a 'face' - so to speak. In the beginning for the band, Cheri did a lot of lead vocals, and Jackie was the Runway's bass player.
Very interesting, thanks for posting. I'm not quite sure what Tom Snyder's deal was with Kim Fowley, but he's behaving like a condescending prick towards him, even going so far as to tell Kim he looked ridiculous right after he introduced him. Perhaps it was just an old guard reaction to somebody who appeared to threaten convention and the establishment way of life, but it's obvious Kim Fowley knew more about the record industry at eighteen than Tom Snyder could ever hope to know, and as such he merited more respect than Snyder gave him. I notice Bill Graham, probably the most successful rock impresario of his time, did not feel the need to resort to condesention and petty insults, though he too was part of Snyder's generation. Anyway this video was a very cool look back at an interesting time in rock history.
And none of those guys would have ever imagined that in about 2 1/2 yrs Joan's journey to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame would begin with the release of Bad Reputation followed by I Love Rock and Roll
As if she or anyone else needed something as completely ridiculous and irrelevant as a “rock and roll hall of fame”. When are people going to finally realize that place is nothing more than a giant circle jerk wankfest for music industry scumbags and their disgusting little sycophants? Seriously, it has f***-all to do with actual rock and roll. These absurd inductions are nothing more than an excuse for all the industry sleazeballs to get together and jerk off each other’s egos, while they charge $10K a seat for anyone attending, and that includes friends and family of the bands they induct. Half the bands and artists that have been inducted are the furthest thing from rock and roll you can imagine, while actual, important rock and roll pioneers are completely ignored. I just wish people would see that horrible place for what it actually is and quit acting like being inducted there is some kind of honor.
I love the debate or discussion about the difference between punk rock and new wave. There are similarities and differences. They similarly are for those that seek an alternative to rock and roll and other genres. There are also similarities in the subjects they sing about. The differences have to do with style and sound. In my opinion punk artists are: The Ramones, Patti Smith (I disagree with Bob), The Sex Pistols, Iggy Pop, The Clash, The Dead Boys and many others. New wave artists are: The Smiths, The Psychedelic Furs, The Cars, Elvis Costello, Devo and many others.
Now that's laughable, Paul's sitting there looking like Steve Marriott out of 60's band The Small Faces. Who he was influenced by and many other 60's bands and that era of clothes and music.
Being a starving artist doesn't make you anti-establishment. Mindset and actions are what define who you are. If money or success change who you are and influence you to be a shallow person, that is what you then become, or were all along.

never seen this before but I think the best thing to happen to Joan Jett was this Kym POS "quitting" her! Joan is and always will be Fantastic! She's done so much more than this punk rock bullshit...
It is really frustrating to hear Snyder and his guests conflate UK and US punk, and the New Wave scene, and worst of all, almost completely ignore its' antecedents. And treat both, punk and New Wave, as if they were brand new movements in 1978. Guess they hadn't really listened to the Bay City Rollers, or the Sonics, or the Velvet Underground; or seen Iggy Pop and the Stooges perform live; or heard any of (the) MC-5's early albums...
@@hazelwray5307 No, not Sonic Youth. The Sonics, from Tacoma Washington. In the '60s, they were punk before punk was punk, haha. Look them up. Songs like Psycho, The Witch, Strychnine, etc. Gerry Roslie had a voice so powerful it could peel paint off the walls.

Kiddie friendly? what kind of station have you been listening to. I can't turn on the radio nowadays without hearing songs about sex or any other provocative subject. It's getting old really.
@@catya Sadly that's what is kiddie friendly these days. Taylor Swift and shit.
Paul Lvamp it’s not what’s on the radio, it’s what today’s artist record in general. Nothing but hip hop crap. And the RnB lost its soul when Motown died.
So cool to see her as a late teenager who wanted to play rock and roll!
Bill Graham 👍☮️👈🏽
That guy was as much a legend ( in regards to music ) as any body in the house!!🎸
Wow, that was really interesting! A peek behind the scenes in the music industry back then. Thank you to whoever posted this video.
Great to see Joan back when I listened to The Runaways in high school!
LMAO at Kim Fowley, He was truly a mad genius...Psycho,yes but he had his finger on the pulse of the scene in the 70's.
I fuckin enjoy the runaways music! Joan Jett is Motherfuckin talented!🤜🏾🤛🏻🎸🎼🎶🎶🎶🎶👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
Joan had just turned 20 and had been performing with the Runaways for about three years.
whatever I love Joan!!!!!
I saw this when it first aired around September 1977. I was a HUGE Runaways fan. Luckily, I got to see them twice in concert.
Lucky you, Gary! I need some details!..
I love Paul Weller's gum chewing while smoking - LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He's one-of-a-kind, isn't he? Kind of a straight Bowie. Does it his way, and does it differently. Rock, new wave, soul.
Came for Joan Jett and got Wells as a nice surprize!
Didn't start in UK. Started in US with Iggy, Dolls and Ramones.
Tom Synder always has great guests and in depth questions 😎✌
13:35 Kim Fowley, with all his campness and controversy, speaks some cold hard truth here. He clearly understood what the music was all about. I love how he calls Tom out for dismissing the music.
Yep.
Was this interview before or after Kim Fowley drugged and raped the bassist from the Runaways?
@@forbesmag1271 After. And the two music guys on the show, know who 'he was' and what is was accused of doing more than once.
Awesome interview a history lesson
Paul Weller: Legend.
A rock legend because they said she's a rock legend, she isn't a rock legend she was a disturbance that drew curiosity
Damn! The Runaways' bass player sounds GREAT here! Her lines are melodic yet rhythmic. Much respect for her. Also, thanks to whoever mixed it to where it can be heard in the first place.
Vicki Blue.
Man, I’ll always have a crush on Joan Jett and grace slik. Two amazing female artists
Thanks for posting. This is great history.
si, realmente, como no hay mas entrevistas a joan jett en esa época? es buenisima!
Oh man, would loved to have seen The Jam at the Whisky in 77.
I would have much rather seen them in either ‘79 or ‘80. Setting Sons, Sound Affects time. That’s when they were really at their peak. Don’t get me wrong, I love stuff like “In The City”, but they got so much better when they started infusing their music with a more soulful sound.
Hilburn - how he ever became the mouthpiece for the LA Times music?
❤Bill
Saw so many great bands thanks to him
RIP
❤Joan and Paul both legends ❤
I love this so much.Joan, bad reputation, so awesome. And Weller..Music unites.I do love all on this clip.So cool, before everyone was at each others throats!😀
I wish that there were more interviews on here with Tom Snyder.
+Jake Drew
Tom Snyder was my favorite TV-show interviewer. So relaxed & confident. Tom Snyder´s "Tomorrow Show" was my favorite one. He seemed to be a very nice & genuine guy too. RIP Tom Snyder (1936 - 2007).
+Mr. Blackwell He had quite the ego but he was/is actually rather likeable.
I see you have Peter Criss as your pic, so you must've seen Tom's interview with Kiss haha
He's an @$$
Dave La Violette same
Kim Fowley was here the "Prima Ballerina" the New York Dolls sung about.
Thanks for sharing!!!
Snyder tried a bit of that bullshit with John Lennon, until he pointed out Snyder's 'Beatle style haircut' to him. Very funny, even Snyder laughed.
BG was a cool guy
And none of those guys would have ever imagined that in about 2 1/2 yrs Joan's journey to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame would begin with the release of Bad Reputation followed by I Love Rock and Roll
Tame, sex pistols music were way more provocative
2022 around the corner and yes the runaways and more specific Joan Jett have been a household name for decades.
love both Runaways and The Jam...... legendary formations
We rarely ask questions twice here, well whoop Dee do.
I shouted, F+ck you out loud, when he said that condescending crap!
Weller was so ahead of his time.
Now that's laughable, Paul's sitting there looking like Steve Marriott out of 60's band The Small Faces. Who he was influenced by and many other 60's bands and that era of clothes and music.
@@michaelmckenna7109the way he talks.
So basically they’re telling them they don’t have talent because of what they define as talent !? Ugh the assery
RIP miss your show Tom.
Being a starving artist doesn't make you anti-establishment. Mindset and actions are what define who you are. If money or success change who you are and influence you to be a shallow person, that is what you then become, or were all along.
Thank you Mat . I stood right there in our den in Laguna Niguel as I was raised babysat by Joan and this is all my family these hardcore and true true the specimens Tex and the horse heads
We were holding our strength
The avengers had just begun she n I traded encouragement
Lee the lees I’m gonna get another Coach and tour . I hope I get to play again I hope I get to play with The Zeroes.
If this is poetry, it is stunning. I want to hear more. If it is a comment, it's a garbled mess. But as poetry----👍🔥
Joan Jett is a huge inspiration. Even all these years later
Tom Snyder actually tried to have intelligent conversations about things that concerned and interested young people so perhaps old people could understand. Didn’t always work, but I tried to never miss a show. I missed this one so glad it has been resurrected. Joan Jett Rules!
Fowley called it with power pop wow 😮
The Punk “fad” has influenced music profoundly for over 40 years. Joan Jett is a legend as well as a “house hold name”.
Pretty sure she’s in the rock and roll hall of fame now too. How’s that for karma
28:09 - "Y'know, whatever happens to us, you can download a song about it" -- 31 years before Napster was a thing.
Joan, had an eye to the future. She is amazing, she rocks! Still! 😎😍
“Whatever happens to us, YOU SIT DOWN AND WRITE A SONG ABOUT IT.” Sorry, no time travel. Love Joan though. Saw her at JFK.
Download? she said "write a song". The internet wasn't even a thing when this aired. Apple made it's first computer in 1978, but it didn't have any software or disk drives...lol. A calculator today has more memory...
Joan sounds so different here. Nowadays she has a strong accent when she talks.
Lol cuz she moved to New York and developed the accent
omg never realized how pretentious these people were... the journalists and the host Tom. lol
The Wedge Bill Graham was a concert promoter who took exception to certain groups using Nazi paraphernalia having fled Germany as a child during the war, his whole family was murdered. The rest of them were pretty pretentious though.
The Wedge Ignorant too saying that this started in England! Iggy Pop, The Velvet Underground and The Ramones started it. They’re extremely shallow about understanding it
It was brand new then. Most people didn't know a whole lot about it then. Tom Snyder was cool just for having these people on and discussing the subject. Who the heck else was interviewing Joan Jett at that time?
This is such a delightful clip
Loving JoanJett sooo much since Runaways days!
26:07 for Joan’s speech
Yea well Van Halen showed up in 77-78 and changed everything. Also Motorhead.
ramones, sex pistols, clash, and others also.
Motorhead overrated ass band dumb music
Van Halen changed nothing in my world.
never seen this before but I think the best thing to happen to Joan Jett was this Kym POS "quitting" her! Joan is and always will be Fantastic! She's done so much more than this punk rock bullshit...
Being 18 in 1978 must have been fun. A lot of new and exciting stuff coming out.
Did u hear of the germs, they were around from like 77-82 that’s my favorite band and I found out Joan Jett produced their album
It was..
Classic Kim Fowley! Great to see this interview again!
'Bay City Rollers'? ... 'Sonics' - 'Sonic Youth'?
@@hazelwray5307 No, not Sonic Youth. The Sonics, from Tacoma Washington. In the '60s, they were punk before punk was punk, haha. Look them up. Songs like Psycho, The Witch, Strychnine, etc. Gerry Roslie had a voice so powerful it could peel paint off the walls.
Tom seemed to really hate Kim. I wonder if he knew something.
Yep- he simmered while talking to this creep
Very interesting look back in time.
It's kind of weird to watch this....I feel like I stepped into a time machine to 10/11/1978, and sitting between everybody, helpless, not being able to say a word about the what will really happen to the future of music.. Also, knowing the fate of Bill Graham.
Wish we could warn Bill
Paul and Joan smoked a spliff before on air.I love this intetview.Bill Graham was a club promoter, not a record producer.Different era,Weller says Bowie and Townshend weren't millionares, lol, the kid was naieve, fantastic stuff..
Neither man was a millionaire in 1978.
@@jacksprat2178 Correct!
Paul Weller... hard to believe at 18 (!!!) he was writing such incredible music and profound lyrics. Absolute legend. (Joan is also cool.)
