it actually does, but only in the sense of if the player behind the character is taking the character in a stupid direction
i.e. Chaotic Stupid going in and causing trouble for trouble's sake at every town they go to.

Chaotic Stupid: Someone who’s so chaotic that they’ll actively screw themselves over just to spite the rules or act differently.
Lawful Stupid: Someone so dedicated to following the letter of law or orders that’ll actively jeopardize their own life and the life of the party to follow rules.
Stupid Good: Someone so naïvely good and trusting that they will consistently not only let an villain off the hook, but will always assume a character is ready to turn over a new leaf no matter how many times they betray you.
Stupid Evil: Someone so dedicated to being a petty dick that they’ll attempt to be as evil as possible in every situation even if the evil act would screw themself over.

If you ask Aqua, she would say that she is the peak of Lawful Good, but right after that she would be as chaotic as possible trying to convince you.

@@rainynight02 Racism against Devils which should be known by the anime watchers already. For homophobia, she has her cult spread rumors that the Demon King is a LGBTQ+ p3d0 and r4p1st in an attempt to ruin the DK's reputation.
Konosuba is what happens when the party has a combined negative INT score.
But then one extremely intelligent member who has to go out of their way to fix his parties mistakes. Often at the cost of his own life. You can dunk on kazuma for a lot... and the series does, but it's important to note he is pushed to being scummy as retribution by his whole party.
P.S. I apologize for this turning into a kazuma rant, I know that's not what the original comment was about.

I agree that Aqua isn't useless, she's actually the most powerful member of the team, but either she refuses to help, or she's too stupid to help, or she's the one who caused the problem in the first place.
She's POTENTIALLY useful but FUNCTIONALLY useless
@@blackrapier713 its not that shes Functionally useless, is that she is useless for a long range campaign, just like almost everyone else. Aqua is definately the most broken member of the party as shes a great Undead killer and Healer, but her Wisdom and Intelligence are so low that she ends up using all her skill points into gimmick abilities like the party one, not mentioning how she already capped her stats. Megumin may only know one spell that faints her after a single use, but it is one of the most powerful and destructive spells known in that world. Darkness may ne a sword maiden with the uncanny acuraccy of a toddler, but the endurance of a mountain. And Kazuma may have the lowest and weakest stats and abilities of the group, but his Wisdom and Luck allow him to pull of the most bullshit plans possible. Their party is useless agaisnt small mobs and so on, but they together they are perfect boss killers, and it shows how they have legitimately defeated 4 Demon Generals.

@@LordofSadFac In game terms, the best way to describe the girls' builds is that they all hyper min-maxed themselves. Kazuma on the other hand spread his skill set wide to fill in the gaps while using his inherently high luck to compensate for his skills being under powered compared to a more specialized build.
Its not exactly that Aqua is stupid, she is somewhat smart. Its just she really only part way thinks things through when she forms a plan.
The reason "Aqua is useless" is a meme because, if you compare how many problems she solves vs. how many problems she CAUSES, you begin to find that she's more of a hinderance than an asset.
And often, she solves the problem she caused in the first place. Ironically, Megumin is secretly a close second due to events that occurred before the start of the series. After all, the Axis Cult is known for stupidity, so their clever recruitment drives had to come from someone with half a brain....
That's basically a lie though because the party would literally be dead without her. Like you need to weigh up the problems vs solutions in terms of acutal impact. If you cause 20 problems that are "annoying", but solve 1 problem that is "someone is fucking DEAD" then your net usefulness is still sky fucking high.
As he said Aqua is stupid (or maybe even not even stupid so much as comically selfish in allot cases), but she's anything but useless.

Not that many actually because the other party members are also often pretty fucking stupid and quite capable of killing themselves or each other without her help.
Worth noting that the "useless goddess" is just an attempt to translate the punny name "damegami", which combines "dame", meaning generally no good, useless or failure with "megami" meaning goddess. Useless goddess fits, but so does "failure goddess", which might fit better: she has the tools, but her intelligence and luck stats guarantee that her attempts to use said tools will almost always end with some degree of catastrophic failure.
Really, I think her entire character is best summed up with the underwear meme, where she hates the idea that pathetic mortals might see her underwear, so she made them invisible. Shows her viewpoint: she's not embarrassed, she just finds it unpleasant that such lowly creatures might see something as great as her underwear; shows her shortsightedness: by making her underwear invisible she's letting people see something they'd like even better, thus not really denying them anything; and finally, it shows her tendency to unnecessary excess: simply not wearing underwear would have the same effect and not cost her near as much effort, but she apparently never even thought of such a simple solution.
In either case, I did feel like this guy was a little biased in this one. There were plenty of spots where it felt like she should've had an evil hit that he bumped to neutral (for instance, deliberately forcing Kazuma to endure a painful death as punishment for telling her that he didn't find her attractive; I don't care if she could bring him back after he died, he still died in a very painful manner by her hand, so I'd say some kind of evil ding is quite justified).

Aqua (and to a lesser extend every other of the main girls) are not useless, far from it. But she is more trouble than she is worth.
It actually becomes kind of a recurring joke that people praise their skills but then learn the hard way what Kazuma has to deal with.
An actualy story from the LNs is that a rival party leader was angry with how Kazuma deals with the girls. Finally having a breaking moment from dealing with nonsense, Kazuma tells the guy he can go on one adventure with his party, and he with his. Now, Kazuma as far as builds go is lackluster, but with his luck (second highest only to Eris) and decent intelligence can come up with excellent plans and assists. His temp party had a great adventure. The other guy.... well he was literally begging that Kazuma take them back. The girls are only functional due to Kazuma's sheer efforts to guide their madness.

Aqua is not useless in the sense that she is used alot to solve problems. The undead army, the Raptors, the need for resurrections in the first place. She solves problems but it’s either inadvertently, she herself caused the problem or leads to bigger problems.
Which in the end still helps her in her end goal funny enough. She’s impulsive, stupid and a bit shallow at the beginning but she is not useless in the traditional sense of speaking.
A perfect example of a character that fails upwards.

Yeah cause Kazuma's best skill is his commanding/leading talent, he know when to run, can quickly seize opportunities when they present themself, and is able to bring the most out of everyone under his command.

Kazuma Doesn't have a high luck stat. He has insane luck. his luck is so high he can and does steal from the goddess of luck, repeatedly and she is the only person that has ever beaten him in a pure luck based game. End novel Kazuma is weirdly overpowered once he learns a certain spell. Death become basically meaningless to him.
A thing I'd like to point out about Kazuma before we get there, his character arc spans the entire 17 volume run of the original light novels, the two seasons and the movie cover the first 5. Also if you thought the characters seemed to regress a little in the choker OVA it's probably because it's anime only.

What the light novel did have however was Kazuma carrying Dust’s party when the swapped parties for a day during the would be first season.

I think Aqua’s shining moment in the entire novel was in vol. 9 (or 10, can’t remember exactly).
Spoilers ahead:
the story was that Kazuma and the party were dispatched to defend a fortress in the frontlines against a demon general and army.
Every day, the army would siege the fortress and do heavy damage. After they leave, Aqua would utilize her skills in construction and arts and crafts to repair the damage. She was so good at it, she not only repair all the damage, but was even able to fortify the structure and paint the fortress to make it look nicer. And the crazy part is that she did this all willingly without complaining even once, simply because she liked doing construction work.
Eventually, the demon lord lost their shit and demanded a 1v1.

Jokes aside she’s probably my favourite character
Aqua is less built for combat (although a lot of her abilities has been shown to be effective in a combat situation if utilized by someone smarter than a bag of bricks). She more than proves her usefulness as the story progresses where we get to see a lot more problems arise in the world than "We have to kill this thing". She has her biases and issues and is honestly an equivalent of a child through the series. Having read the books, seeing her learn and grow is an incredibly fun journey and I can't wait for others to experience it.
There is a lot of little details that are the reasons Kazuma calls Aqua useless, like she start with super high stats, except for her int and luck but after leveling up none of her stats increased because she is a goddess her body is already at it's peak. She can level up and learn new tricks but her stats will not change.
Also there is the time Kazuma and Dust changed parties.
Still, I agree that Aqua is not useless, when a demon general tries to copy Megumin's tactic of unleashing an Explosion per day in a fortress of the Kingdom she spend each day repairing it and soon it is better than when the demon attacks started. Not only more sturdy but she adds art, relieved and other things on the walls.
Aqua is a lot like Pokemon's Team Rocket, where we see Jessie and James do excellent work in any fields other than stealing a ten years old electric Pokemon.
Aqua has so many talents it's just that she rarely uses the appropriate talent for the situation, like how she uses a lot of the points she gets leveling up not to learn spells but party tricks.
Now, if you ever make a Tanya Von Degeruchaff's video I wonder if we could get small dings for Being X, just to compare gods.
Indeed, you actually touched on a tiny detail that makes Aqua's debt problem hilarious as fuck. She is the Goddess of not just Water, but the Arts. She is naturally the best at any creative endeavor you can imagine. Painting? Masterpiece. Cooking? Doubt you'd ever taste something better. As you mentioned, Architecture? Nothing will be built better. With those skills, she could make bank like its no one's business. But she is lazier then just about anyone.
Man I so hype for this 4 parter. Kazuma in particular will be one hell of a ride.
One thing I would like to point out. Eris isn't Aqua's replacement. Aqua oversaw the deaths of people from Earth. Eris oversees deaths from the Isekai world. Aqua was replaced by that winged goddess from episode 1.
Eris is Aqua's subordinate, however. Which is why she bullies Eris. Ironically, Eris is FAR more competent then Aqua. And she is much more prone to things you may not expect of such a dainty goddess. She would do anything in her power for her followers, and until Kazuma came along someone had to clean up Aqua's various messes.

One thing about konosuba that I love is, having read the light novels, they don't stray from what they are. They stay goofy and silly all the way to the end. Kazuma stays the schemer that sees the situation as it is and can take advantage of people, being a scumbag to get what he wants, all that fun stuff. Its great as most itsekeis tend to raise the stakes in a way that breaks characters to the point of no longer being characters or switches genres midway through with no foreshadowing. Konosuba stays in its lane and tries to master what it made, instead of trying something new and is very entertaining because of that.
Aqua is an interesting case. She is stupid overall, but when it would cause a lot of bad luck for people, she gets smart. Its as if as long as it causes her bad luck or others bad luck, shes intelligent. That or if its a godly duty or is insignificant, she is very very good at that. And oh boy does the story use this all the time, its amazing. And they do it in so, so many varied ways.
If you haven't given it a read, the light novel is great. They foreshadow things properly, character motivations and all that is explained and it is glorious and yeah.
If you have watched the Anime, you'll be on book 3 or 4 of 17 I believe. Now while you CAN skip over book 3 and 4? if you have watched the movie with the crimson demon village, you do miss out on some really funny scenes.
I would love to see you take a look into some characters from the 2018 She-Ra show! Specifically Catra, Glimmer, Shadow Weaver and Hordak come to mind as characters that do a lot of things for complex reasons which often blur the lines between "good" and "evil!"

Edit: Serious answer, it really comes down to the fact that she goes +0 in terms of useful moments and not useful moments like, as a plus yeah she can heal and ressurect, but as a minus she's the source of 90% of their debt

aqua is easily the most powerful but the main reason she is considered useless is due to her sheer stupidity causing her to not even realize that she has an ability that can help (also the fact that she started out max level from the beginning basically and wasted all her skill points on party trick spells) its more of kazuma realizes she can do amazing things but just doesn't and gets a little frustrated with her at times, but its more evident in the novels that he does at the end of the day value her as a friend despite his insults
It's actually specified during the series that aqua has a godly aura that attracts all the undead which she is completely capable of turning off but refuses to because she considers it a part of her identity
On a side note in dnd it would be an ability that increases charisma but attracts undead unfortunately for aqua she doesn't scale on charisma and has a relatively low charisma stat so it just gets her to a bit above average

Aqua has so many tools in her repertoire that could make things quick and easy for her, but between her being lazy, self-important, and, yeah, incredibly stupid, it basically renders her abilities null in a lot of cases.
She is not useless, as you said, and she has her shining moments, but her shortcomings are what drive people to claim her to be useless, and even then it's not even meant seriously.
Besides, how would you feel if you had a goddess in your corner, but all she can seemingly do is beg for money after she put herself in debt, get you killed numerous times, and make things worse if she isn't constantly supervised.
Granted, that's not the only thing she does, and she still has good intentions despite her selfishness and egotism, but when she's basically your chosen blessing in your quest to ice a demonic monarch (a Demonarch, if you will), it's a little hard to see and appreciate the intentions until they actually pay off.
Yay! Konosuba alignment videos! And to start off with Aqua is a great choice. The idiot goddess who can't do anything. Perfect! Now I want to see Kazuma and the others to see how Chaotic Neutral they all are.
Edit: Aqua is still useless thanks to her being just like everyone else. Completely resorting to one ability and nothing else. It's just that they were just bumbling around being lucky that everything somehow goes their way. Not useless by definition, but still stupidly useless.
And basically the whole party is various shades of good, which is not surprising considering how they try to do good and just keep screwing things up by accident.
One ability? She has countless abilities, her list of skills is ridiculous long.

If you read her background for Aqua, as well as the other goddess(es), like Eriss(Kriss) in the world, they can't lie(which is why Aqua always seems to be an idiot). They are blatantly honest. They can't stand evil or undead, which is why Aqua HATES all undead, even if they are good, like Wiz. Kriss is even more extreme in her hatred. They are pretty much lawful good. Aqua is also the goddess of art, which is why she can always make all of those silly, amazing things that serve no purpose. Like the roses, drawing of a noble or a milk carton robot.
Here character is along the lines of a Palladin/spellcaster. Her very tears hurt undead, she has a natural hatred for everything evil. She cannot lie. One the other hand, she follows the rules that SHE, herself set, so she cannot break them, therefore, she can kind of do what she wants, but does not. She actually lives according to the rules that put her down in the world in the first place other than bringing Kasuma back to life, to the ire of Eris, which she does based on her seniority and influence over Eris instead of breaking laws.. That is why I put Aqua, as stupid, vapid and entertaining as she is, at lawful-good.
I'm surprised you didn't once mention how Konosuba is like a mismatched D&D campaign, lot of people point that out. But great video, can't wait to see the other members of Konosuba!
Aqua, Megumin, and Darkness can be summed up by a quote from TeamFourStar.
"I take it back, you're all stupid."
Aqua is easily the most powerful resident of Axil. Its not even close. Its just she's so specialized, she's only good in very specific situations. But in her wheelhouse, she is unrivaled. She has unlimited mana, basically can down any undead solo, and gets unlimited ressurections. Unfortunatly she's also really dumb and the most unlucky person on the planet. I adore her so hard.
I love Aqua because she's the definition of what a support should be and her goofy ass is just too funny not to have around, she is the life of the party.
Aqua is like Homer Simpson a decent person and fun to hang out with but I would stay a few feet away from them because I don't want to die.
Aqua isn't useless, she's use-impaired. She has a very definite wheelhouse where she's incredibly powerful, but outside of that she has to rely on her (non-existent) intelligence. And a good portion of the story involves situations that are firmly outside Aqua's wheelhouse.
Feelings on Aqua can be mixed, arguably for good reasons.
She is impulsive, thinks very little through, is gloriously irresponsible, and takes a little too much pride in the accomplishments she has, no matter how shall. She is the definition of an Exalted Lv20 character being forced down to Lv1 and just not admitting it, with all the entitlement and attitude you might expect.
With that said, however, she is actually exceptional in a technical sense. Outside of the holy combat, her spells do lend well to social gatherings, and she has been shown to be a shockingly skilled craftswoman, as well as a determined general worker. Honestly, if she wasn’t trying to get her divinity back, she could probably iron out a grand career as a community/city aide.
Her “uselessness” definitely is an unfortunate consequence of her impressively awful INT and WIS, but her exceptional talents alongside some clever roleplay is what definitely keeps her in the team’s good graces.
All this being said, Konosuba at the end of the day is still a show about a party consisting of the least tolerable people you would permit in society trying to eek out a living together. They are all genuine cretins or wastes of potential, and we love them for it!

I can agree that Aqua does have great skills if used correctly, and most people agree that it's her attitude that depicts her as worthless. Ultimately, she has her moments, but she's a fun and cute character that requires a lot of patience.
I don't think you wrong persay. I just always felt the Aqua meme came with the same tongue in the cheek the everything else konosuba does. A grain of truth inflated into a mountain.
The light novel series Konosuba concluded last year. There is enough material for them to turn it into 6 additional season (5 after next years) if they don't end up making more movies.
Apparently I have a preference for long, light-blue hair. Aqua was the very character to awaken that.

I never got the impression he got Aqua via a loop hole at all. So much that the immediate and uncompromising response from the other gods suggests that it was just an awesome excuse to banish her.
Gotta admit, I do wish you'd included the moment where the party discovers her stats are capped and she'll never gain a single point of INT or WIS. The look of sheer pity on her teammates faces is priceless.
I'll agree with a lot of the posts here, the party is only actually good at one thing: combatting bosses. And they are stunningly good at that. Anything less and they cause much more damage than they prevent. They're the equivalent of bringing a bazooka to a sharpshooting competition.

I feel Tanya is pretty consistent lawful evil (there's even a hint in the english title). That said, I would enjoy an alignment video.

I only ever watched the first episode of this show. It got lost in the shuffle. Looking forward to finding out more later in the month.
I think kazuma is the most useful member of the team, he'll when he went off with another party he was leading leading extremely well and can be considered a exceptional strategist and adventurer abke to go at the end of the series with the demon king and not be so overwhelmed he can't fight back, I can say he definitely has potential to be a beast but is held down, by his personality and team causing so many problems for him.
Now second most useful is easily aqua with third being darkness and last megumin

I wish that the light novel stuff was added too since it gave her an amazing end to her character arc during the last couple volumes.
7:48 Correction: Eris is not her replacement. Eris is the goddess in charge of the fantasy world. Aqua’s replacement is the Angel that appears in Ep 1. I ‘think’ Aqua was in charge of the departed sounds from our modern world, which is a totally different jurisdiction.

Aqua isn’t useless useless but she is net useless. The amount of times she’s able to do something or is knowledgeable on a subject is vastly outweighed by how often she creates problems, negates rewards, or is just an idiot. She clears a house of ghosts that were only there because she messed with the seal. She earns a hoard of money for defeating an attacking army with a spell but loses all of it due to collateral damage. She goes to obliterate a giant frog with a different spell but the frog is resistant( or immune) to the spell and starts chewing on her
An interesting, if maybe time consuming because you may have to play a Gacha for the full story, character suggestion I have is Karyl from Princess Connect Re:Dive (AKA "Catgirl Aqua" - Geoff Thew, 2020) so the Thumbnail options are numerous.
While trying to spoil as little as possible; "Toxic Upbringing", once you understand that origin, a lot of her actions in the greater plot start making sense.
Correction, Aqua participated in murdering Kazuma specifically for saying he couldn't make any passes at her no matter how hard he tried.
Also you are (generally) giving Aqua too much credit, the reason for the "Aqua is the Useless Goddess" meme is the reality that her colossal stupidity means that she's far more often a hindrance than she is a help and as you point out multiple times, a lot of the problems she does actually help solve are more often than not caused BY her in the first place, and she also has a strong tendency to thoughtlessly cause so much collateral damage that she effectively erases all of the rewards the party earns and then some.
TLDR she's not "useless" because she's incapable of being helpful, she's useless because most of the time her stupidity and pettiness cause her to harm the party enough to cancel out the benefits of having her around. When the party is getting props for solving a problem and they have to keep their mouths shut about it being a problem one of them (almost exclusively) caused that isn't being useful.

Maybe it's just because I have a tendency to overanalyze shows and movies, but I always felt that Aqua was never useless, nor are any of the other characters, but they have issues that they need help with. For example, Aqua has a habit of doing things on a whim, without thoroughly analyzing the situation. This makes sense, because until she entered the fantasy world with Kazuma, she never had to worry about money or fighting. If I were to try and help someone break a habit like this, I would use a whistle, or some other kind of signal, every time they're about to act impulsively. I would explain to them that when I make the signal, that they should stop whatever it is they're doing, and take a few moments to consider what they're doing and what's going on. Over time, they'd learn to catch themselves when they're about to act impulsively without my help. Again, maybe this is just me reading too much into a series that's supposed to be comedic, but that's just how I feel
I'm 90% sure that even if you manage to succeed in this pavlovian experiment, Aqua would just completely forget it after a night of drinking or rebel out of spite
@@lancearnedo7837 Not necessarily. It's been shown that Aqua does want to be helpful, even though it usually doesn't work out for her. While she doesn't dwell on her failures very much, she'd probably still want to improve herself if she understood exactly what the problem is. That's just it, she may be a goddess, be her emotions and desires are extremely human.

In Kazuma's defense, he only exploited that loophole because Aqua is an idiot who kept acting high and mighty and kept belittling him. Aqua kinda deserves some if the ire she gets from Kazuma .

This just goes to show that just like chaotic neutral does not necessarily mean chaotic stupid, on the other side; lawful good doesn't necessarily mean lawful smart. And on a related but separate aside, if we were to break Aqua down into game statistics her wisdom score would SUCK; especially for someone who's supposed to be a divine entity! Luckily for characters like her though, they generally also tend to boost a high Charisma score; at least when it comes to force of will.

The funny thing about Aqua is that she's useless...until someone drops dead in which case you're glad to have her. How many D&D/MMORPG players can say the same?
I think most useful member of the team would require her to achieve anything on her won except getting drunk and in debt.
