    That's really neat. I've never heard of them called peanut beetles. I always called them darkling beetles. Ive been keeping mealworms for 4 years. Feed them to my fish, and chameleon when we had one. I also use them for ice fishing. Supper easy to keep but I've never fed them peanuts.

    Best peanut beetle video I've ever seen. I might be an intermediate beetle keeper now running 1 main culture and 5 back up cultures primarily to feed from and experiment with best husbandry practices to improve larvae yields. I am still testing out the best way to keep them in my fish room as they go.

      Thank you for the compliment! Especially as you are the one who provided the cultures.

    Man, great video! Love the background/lighting and video/sound quality were spot on. Are you planning on doing another video on how you harvest the larvae? In other words cracking open and showing the "goods?" Haha.

      Agreed. Great production. How do you tell if there’s a larvae in the nut?

    • @WeldonTanks

      We can do a video harvesting! I have no found an immense amount on the potatoe itself and in the oats. For the peanuts I have found they will feel less dense as it has been eaten. Also one of those things, pick one and I am sure you will find many.

      @@WeldonTanks pretty novice myself but I believe there are a few ways to harvest some easier than others

    Yo my granny
    Use to keep these for some reason
    But she would keep em with oats bread and banana peels… she had so many of the adults
    This is way before I knew about the larvae was a source of live food for fish

      They grow quickly into adults, already my cultures are booming! Thanks for sharing your experience

      I believe they are technically native to South America but now inhabit regions of North America. And welcome to the channel! Hope you find the content useful and inspiring. Got most of the walls completed on the fish room tonight, weekend by weekend making progress

    How often do you need to change put the oats & peanuts? Also how often do you need to start new culture?

    • @WeldonTanks
      @WeldonTanks  2 роки тому

      Start a new culture as you see fit, no real timeframe to give you.
      And as for the oats and peanuts that will be when all the peanuts have been used as a food source

    My mom always told me since I was a small child that when a potatoe sprouts the sprouts turn toxic also. That just popped into my head lol. I am curious about how many larvae are in each peanut.

    Quick question. Is wheat bran fine or does it need to be oatmeal? I use wheatbran for my supers and meals because oatmeal makes it more difficult to separate the larvae. If it matters I could go buy a tub of oatmeal real quick.

    • @WeldonTanks
      @WeldonTanks  8 місяців тому

      I do not have a direct answer to that. I only used oats, I would suspect it would work the same

    Always keep two cultures! Even when starting them! Also, your culture breathing holes/air circulation holes need to be small enough that mites can't get in.
    I love keeping peanut beetles to feed to my fish and gecko and also sell them online. Also, they can get enough water from the peanuts and nutrients from the oats, and anything else is a supplement to water/nutrients but can also cultivate mold which is a major enemy and ruiner of cultures! Lastly, be careful of that discarded potato! You need to freeze it to be sure there are no eggs/larvae on there, because peanut beetles can be an agricultural pest.

      I unfortunately no longer have cultures. Have since moved states. You can try Josh’s frogs or possibly aqua bid to find a starter culture.
