How frequently do you add the veggies?
Every other day. Thanks Barbara
Is their exoskeleton softer
Aren't they though :)
Forgot to ask on Sunday. What’s the easiest way to harvest the larvae?
No worries. One of two ways- 1) put a piece of veggie down, come back in an hour, scrape off the larvae. Or 2) the larvae LOVE to live in the peanuts. So, grab a peanut, hold it over a deli cup, and shake out the larvae. Always only feed larvae too!
I feed fruit flies, small crickets, rice flour beetle larvae, and bean beetles!
I've never been a huge fan of the rice flour beetle larvae or the bean beetles. You will LOVE switching over to peanut beetles!!!
I think I need some of these beetles!
Absolutely!
this music on REPEAT would make for effective torture or perhaps riot/crowd dispersement Are these critters also known as rice flour beetles? they remind me of miniature mealworms. I keep mealworms "darkling beetles" when I have cichlids (medium+ size fish) or birds - usually chickens (they make for excellent hand-feeding to promote tame/friendly pet relationships)
That is too funny. Good luck getting it out of your noggin. No, these are not flour beetles. Bigger. And, they are about the same size as mini mealworms but fatter and I feel wriggle around 'incitingly' more than mms. I keep mealworms too. These are FAR easier to culture. Thanks for the watch.
Are these the same as Buffalo beetles?
Nope. Different genus / species. BBs' larvae are harder shelled.
Where do you buy them?
On my store. Link in description. What would you be feeding, if I may ask.
Great information
Thank you!
They look just like mealworms
Thank mealworms? Yes.
I will be ordering some from you!!!
Thank you! (shhhh... when you put your order in, add a comment 2X. I'll know what that means :)
So, I am planning on ordering some of these guys from you in a short while, but I have a quick question: are these beetles prone to inbreeding? On your site, it looks like only about 20 beetles and worms are shipped per order. In the long run, should I consider getting more beetles from differing sources to increase genetic variation in my culture, or will the beetles continue to healthily multiply for a while with only a small genetic pool?
To be very honest, I don't think they do. I know some bug keepers that have generation after generation after generation of bugs (roaches, beetles) without seeing issues. If you order from us, put 2X in the comment and I will send you a double batch for the price of one (as you are a supporter of Supreme Gecko)
@@SupremeGecko thanks! Will be sure to do!
How about with beardies???
I would try the larvae.
YOU ATE THE BEETLES!!!! Tbh I'd do the same I don't mind eating bugs just not Mold!!!
Nummy. And they taste just like chocolate sprinkles. 😉
hey wats ur take on peanut beetle and larvea vs flour beetle/larvea? I have a starter for flour beetles coming as I have a few mantis nymphs
Depends on the purpose. For us, feeding small geckos (and other animals like fish, mantis, etc.) peanut beetles are the way to go by far. Great feeding response (best of any feeder bug in my mind).
Great video! I've raised mealworms and a few other different feeder insects. One of the main down falls in opinion with mealworms is mites. What's your experience with this in PBL cultures and how do you deal with these?
I've been fortunate enough to only have one outbreak since keeping mealworms, peanut beetles, and other grain associated feeder insects. I threw away the pan of mealworms after trying all types of remedies. The best way to deal with them is to prevent them in the first place.
Here in the UK I can't find any peanut beetles for sale Do you know anyone who could sell me a few to culture please
I don't know anyone selling PBs in the UK. Check with Scott's Animal Adventures.
For the peanuts, should they have shells or no?
The video shows that we use shells.
Interesting! Thanks for the shoutout!!
Oh, thanks for the video! Would you consider them for darts?
@@SupremeGecko maybe the Terribilis or larger Tincs. I also have Mourning Geckos and Anoles that would enjoy them. Thinking of finding some and starting a small culture.
@@jwslippman Oh, good call on the mournings! I bet they would love them. Let me know if you decide to try some.
Know anyone selling starter cultures? 😬
@@jwslippman Message me on FB
great video, where did you come by your first peanut beetles to start your first colony?
Thank you. Oh my, I've been raising them for a while. Not sure now. May I find out why you may be asking? Just curious.
@@SupremeGecko I have dart frogs and mourning geckos so these are the perfect size
@@geekgirlonwheels5842 I would agree. Perfect size. Do you know I sell them?
@@SupremeGecko I am Canadian
@@geekgirlonwheels5842 gotcha.
Seen the beetles before always seen them as being for Dart Frogs, since I only have one group of frogs I have never tried them. If I get more frogs or more micro geckos I will have to keep these in mind.
So many uses as a live food.
Superworms
Funny, I have not fed superworms for over a dozen years.
Cool video and some great info Wally Thanks for sharing
Chris. Thank you! How do you find the time to do your shows AND watch ANY other videos. I feel terrible that I have been so late in watching yours and others.
wow great video and great video editing again awesome work .. I do have a question or 2 with the high humidity that they require do you ever have a grain mitre out break because of the wheat bran you keep them on and where can a person pick up peanut beetles and I have one more question I know what you are thinking he said one or two question now he has three come on lmao (Joke) Any what here is my 3 question the peanuts you put in there do they need to be raw or can you use roasted can they be salted or non salted ??? I know that make like 6 questions all together but I figure you are a great person and you will over look me going over the amount of questions I said I was going to ask and you will just answer them ...ONLY IF YOU WANT ......
First, thank you for the kind words. This was a huge 'learning' video for me as I tried a couple new things. So- never mites. I think it's knowing how much they eat in a day and not overfeeding. Next, I can send some on your order. I use unsalted, raw peanut. I think they can be roasted but must be unsalted.
Hi, I think I might have mites in my cultures. I'm experiencing a lot of death in my culture. I noticed that there are small fast running insects running around in the cultures, I would assume they are mites? What should I do? Is the culture as good as gone?
It's certainly hard to say if they are mites or not without seeing them. If they are fast moving, that might not be mites. If you blow on them, do they jump? If so, they could be springtails. If bad mites, you probably should start another culture.
@@SupremeGecko not springtails. They are at least twice or 3 times larger than a springtail.
Anyway I have selected quite a bit of larvae to start a new culture, culled the one infected by the mites. If this new culture still has these insects, then I'll cull the whole batch and get new ones.
I think this happened after I started feeding carrots. I normally just feed oats and white bread. I've had the culture since Sept last year, and I fed them carrots about a month back. I didnt check to see if they finished the carrots, and about 2 weeks later I noticed the carrots are not there anymore. So I just left it.
I also noticed that the beetles were not producing as much as it used to. Might be predatory mites? Not sure. But thanks for your help.
@@mq3018 Usually mites are about the same size as springtails. Odd. Send me a picture on FB if you can get a closeup. And, mites are usually associate with moisture more than veggies. I feed carrots and other firmer veggies all the time. Yes, if mites, the production of the culture will be dramatically impacted. Good luck!
Wow, I've never heard of these little fellas before. I'm glad you're out here spreading the good news! I'll definitely try to breed peanut beetles if I ever get my hands on a small gecko species.
Thanks! It's fun to see a response like yours. Thanks again.
Hi
Hello
Hello.
I was wondering how often and how many I should feed to my gecko.
Pumpkin is 9 grams and 6 months old. I feed CGD daily so he/she always has food to eat. I use the 3 Pangea's that have insects.
I got these beetles for the high protein and for Pumpkin to hunt if he/she chooses to. Also should I dust them with calcium? Thanks Wally
Hi Bob. I feed sporadically- perhaps 1-2 times a month (or more often when I cannot get micro mealworms). I don't dust as I am dusting mealworms/dubias/crickets already. Great questions.
@@SupremeGecko how many of the little suckers should I feed at a time? WISCONSIN WALLY'S PEANUT BEETLES will be here Friday!!! I am excited to watch Pumpkin hunt 👀
@@BOB-ud4gy really hard question to answer. Depends on the animal. Try a few- 3 to 4 first.
@@SupremeGecko Thanks Wally!
This is a very nice video my first time ever hearing about those Beatles i will have to look more in to them thank you so much for sharing this video with us
Thank you for watching Crystal.
Do you add additional humidity to the enclosures, or do you just use the vegetable foods as a source of moisture?
Also, do you sell these? Thanks!
No, I just add the veggies and that seems to be enough. I do but have oversold a bit. Should have them back up in another month.
GREAT video and awesome editing Wally!!!
Thank you Ken. I have to stop spending 3 days on editing... but I made $1.25, so I've got that going for me :)
I'm guessing breeding these are just like bean weevils? Great video, Wally, I hope you're keeping well!
Thank you my friend. I was pretty bad in Jan. but MUCH better now. They are even easier to breed.
Been looking into these little marvels for a while. Thanks for the greatly helpful video!
Absolutely my pleasure
Mealworms Dubias crickets are my feeders.
For smaller animals, peanut beetle larvae are my go to food.
Great video Wally! I like the 2 camera angles and great music choice. I was wondering do you have to worry about other pests in your peanut beetle set ups. Also do they smell better than crickets?
Thank you Bob. I'm having fun doing new things. I tell ya, If I knew any thing about photography/videography it would be dangerous. No, I've never had bugs with mine but I am sure if I didn't balance what they eat in a day and put in too much, it would get damp in the bin and that would cause mold and little buggers.
Another amazing video Wally
Thank you FDT
I had never heard of peanut beetles. Thank you Wally.
You are most welcome.
WOW, you have come so far with your editing of these videos. Also, thanks for the information. I will have to try these out.
Thank you very much Rashim.
Amazing video! Great information.
Thank you Kate
What a wonderful and informative video!
Thanks for putting this species on my radar...
You are most welcome. And they are so easy.
@@SupremeGecko Can they be considered a smaller and easier alternative to buffalo worms? Those have somewhat recently been officially approved as fit for human consumption in Europe. The peanut beetles however, seem to be a more "alternatively medicinal" item (hence the alternative names "cancer beetle" or "asthma beetle"). I think it became popular to consume live adult beetles of this species for those purposes. If suspect this involves the same chemical compounds of the adults that had killed those reptiles.
@@PeppersnGlowworms For human consumptions? I think PBs have a medicinal purpose over BBs. For animals, I believe PBs is a more meaty (less shell) alternative.
My larvae are really coming along now! I gave Pumpkin 6 last night for the first time and he ate all of them. I had just finished up some black soldier fly larvae a week ago, so I was glad to see him love the PBL's so much.
If I feed these more than once a week should I dust them with calcium?
Thanks again for all your help with getting this peanut beetle larvae culture going!!!
Always a pleasure assisting wherever I can. If you are feeding a food like this as a treat occasionally, you do not need to dust. But if it becomes more of the norm/into the routine, go ahead and dust.
Hello, i was wondering, would peanuts marketed as bird/squirrel feed be suitable for peanut beetles? Thank you!
As long as they are unsalted, they are good to go.
@@SupremeGecko thank you so much!

We just ordered a few today, they are in shipping right now, and I hope the culture does well! I heard it's an amazing feeder for small reptiles and amphibians!
Also, I'm used to feeding crickets but I'm also trying mealworms and my frogs and reptiles love it! Of course, I'll also try peanut beetles. Thanks for the video!
(Were getting the beetles for now but I hope they breed!)
Got mine today and split them between two 6 quart containers. Looking forward to feeding the larvae to Pumpkin. Thanks Wally!
Fantastic Bob. There should have been a bunch in there. Good luck and let me know if you have any questions.
@@SupremeGecko Awesome experience as always, thanks Wally! They are already eating carrots in both containers. Never thought I would be so excited about bugs 😂
Hi, are confused flour beetles/red flour beetles the same as these peanut beetles? I bought a culture of some kinda beetles, the seller said that they are lotus seed beetles. I did a search on the Internet with a picture of my beetles and I think they are either confused flour beetles or red flour beetles. They look like the smaller beetle you showed in your video. They are mostly black, some are red. Probably along the way these two species got mixed.
Also, I was told to just put oat meal in and leave it. That's the food for them. But I see you have peanuts and fresh vegetables for them. Will they finish up the veggie scraps? Or we have to remove them daily?
Sorry for the long question, I'm a total newbie to this and would appreciate if you could help a newbie out. :)
Nope- two different beetles. Not sure what you have but there are peanut beetles (3 times the size of a flour beetle). Yes, these beetles/ and their larvae will finish off a good sized slice of zucchini or carrot in 2 days. No worries about the length of the question. That's why I do these videos :)
@@SupremeGecko thank you for your reply. Is there a way I can send you the pictures of these fellas? They are super tiny, maybe about 3 to 4mm? I really am not sure if they are flour beetles or not. Do you have flour beetle cultures?
@@mq3018 I do have flour beetle cultures. You can send over to my FB account (Wally Kern or Supreme Gecko)
