This was probably the best scene in the movie in my opinion. It really captured Mavericks spirit and skill together. The fighting scenes at the end really made the movie obviously, but this scene really fleshed out the character and drama.

For all the comments saying Maverick did this to show he is the best, yes he's always gonna show off his pilot skills, but the main reason he did it was to prevent any of these kids from dying on the mission. With a 4 minute timer, the enemy response time would've for sure gotten a couple of the pilots killed, but the other superiors didn't care as long as the mission was completed. He had to prove the mission was doable within the original time limit so he could lead them on pace and save them.

Funny how people say "He wanted to prove he was the best" implying they have watched the film, when in the film he states prior to this scene they have to do it in that time else the pilots would get shot down to which the commander shrugged off.
It's obvious that he did this to basically go over the head of the commander, proving the commander wrong. Doing it in 02:15 instead of 02:30 is the part which he is showing off, but to prove to the pilots that not only can it be done, it can actually be done quicker, giving them more confidence.

The original, as iconic and beloved as it is, looks silly by comparison. Tom Cruise is an American hero despite his weird religion, and I think Edge of Tomorrow might just be a documentary; I would trust this man with an actual F18 defending our country.
