I'm African American. I was trying to buy an office building and I asked for a commercial loan at a bank. They never replied to my request, although I went to their office, provided them the business plan for the building. A few months later, another bank approved me for a commercial loan. As I was trying to close, the bank that refused me the loan signed a 5 year lease for a space in the building I was purchasing. The negotiations started with the previous owner's leasing agent. But, I had to provide the approvals, as it was during the due diligence period, as I was taking over the building. Once the bank heard that a new owner of the building was about to take over, they send one of their sales agent to meet the future buyer (me), trying to offer me the commercial loan they refused me a few months earlier. I spoked to the salesperson, but declined their loan. A few months later, they were the tenant in my building ...
This same thing happened to a South Carolina real-estate investor 2 years ago. The police handcuffed him and held him for 3 hours. He owned the properties, got roughed up, sued and won $300,000. Smh, this still exists TODAY!
It also shows how much of a difference a good person can make in a certain outcome. Matt's decision to contact Bernard ahead of the Senate hearing made the difference that allowed for a kind of positive ending despite the setback in Bernard's plans. If Matt was a different type of person that backstabs at the earliest sign of trouble, the situation could have been different. We all face decisions in life and sometimes it tests our moral character. Even in the face of difficulty, choosing to do the right thing is always available.

A lot of success stories, and people who are trying to sell success as a product, have those kinds of steps throughout the process of becoming successful. When you hear all the accurate details, which is often a rarity, it shows that a fortunate opportunity is almost always a major step that facilitated a lot of other things that led to becoming successful. Yes hard work has to be non-ending. But whether you call it luck or an opportunity that presents itself, they play a major role. But people are hesitant to admit that because I really think they don't like their story sounding not as impressive if they admit that it really wasn't just hard work.

This is an eye opening movie with a beautiful story. With a great attitude and a smart mind, you can overcome any obstacle. Even when the whole world is against you.
There is a story similar to this from India. Jamshedji Tata was inspired to build a hotel after he was refused entry at one of the grandest hotels of British time - Watson’s Hotel - which was restricted to ‘whites only. Jamsetji Tata took this as an insult to all Indians and then decided that he would build a hotel where not only Indians but foreigners could also stay without any restrictions. And that's how India's first super-luxury hotel, Taj Mahal Palace, came into being. This same man and his family has built up TATA group that's over $300 billion today.
One of the good things of this movie is that it's based on a real story, So Bernard, Joe and Matt really existed. It's inspiring seeing their actions, specially Bernard, on overcoming obstacles like those. Excellent movie

America in the 50's was a completely different society, with completely different societal norms than it is today. Key words “based on a true story” which is the film business equivalent of beverages that are “juice” but contain only 10% actual fruit products. It is a great movie though it was a nightmare filming. Cast were all super cool especially Mackie.
This was a great movie. My grandfather(my dad's dad) was in WWII. He left the army and tried to get a VA loan and then a conventional bank loan to start a refrigeration business. Got turned down both times. My grandparents saved up $200 to start the business themselves. My grandfather got contracts for commercial refrigeration because of his last name. And a few folks thought he was just the foreman/lead guy and not the owner. It helped that my grandfather had a white sounding name. My grandmother said he would say 'if I do a great job, my color won't matter.' He was successful in spite of seemingly insurmountable obstacles in his(their, my grandmother helped) way. Seemingly we are better but until this kind of thinking is eradicated, the promise of this country will never be realized.
This is an example of a TRUE STORY in the UCLA community. A Young Basketball Player named initially LOU ALCINDOR. Later named Kareem Abdul Jabbar. There was an investigation of housing discrimination near the campus. A Landlord told a couple of African American students the "apartment they were interested in had been RENTED. Later that day a white couple came to see about the apt. and was told it was available. To make a long story short KAREEM bought the building and FIRED THE MANAGER.
Just to see how much discrimination people have gone through is really hard to see and overwhelmingly crazy that someone can still be so kind and patient through his approach to such disrespectful people

@@mr3817 I don't condone criminality, but in this case Bernard ended up as the bad guy although everyone benefited from all the spoils. Sometimes things may not look right or might not be the right thing to do. ..but when you believe in yourself and know that because of the colour of your skin you are being deprived of your rights; treated poorly as though you don't belong; then you will do anything to prove to your oppressors that you too should have a piece of the cake. I don't know if I am making sense; but in this case I emphatize with Bernard because he worked very hard to succeed and it was pulled from under his feet just like that; even though he acted against the law; his so called friends knew that some of the things they did were wrong in a sense ...still, they should not have abandoned him. Wisdom is one thing i truly admire from the main character in this story. Wisdom is what makes a human at higher place than others. Although he faces the real problem -- aka racism -- but he still can think rationally with carefully counted steps. I admire this movie just like The Butler and Hidden Figures. That this movie is based on a real story, really makes me aprichate the 'Old Owner' person. What a man that he was willing to work together with a black man in that Era.
There were more of those kind of whites than meets the eye back then. They were just hamstrung by the system that was run by white racists and a lot of family members that were racist themselves.
It's incredibly stupid to hate someone just because they look a certain way. I judge people by their actions. I'm a Sci-Fi fan, it's great at teaching you, that someone can look very different from you, and still be very good, and honorable, someone you can have a great deal of respect for.
That's a huge simplification of racism. It's not just the way they look that certain people hate. Maybe at the beginning it was appearance based discrimination, but people justified their hatred with things like inferior intellect and genetic predisposition to laziness. @Chomky Squirrel Everyone uses Generalisations, or Stereotypes for pretty much everything. You have to have a bases for how to react to whatever, and you get that knowledge usually through experience of some kind. There is a difference between that, and hating someone, just because of their race. There is no reset button on life, so everyone uses their past experiences to judge future matters. If everyone treated each other with kindness, and respect from today forward, we would see hate in people go way, way down. Also, keep in mind. It's movies that made aliens do experiments on people, and aliens always seem to be bad, there are rarely ever good encounters with aliens. So right now, everyone's experience with a alien is bad, and any future encounter with one will have people react badly to them. Because we made them fear them, before any proof that they exist.
As a fan I agree that sci-fi can and does teach this, but if I may add: I also know the science-fiction genre teaches these common biases and initial misjudgments from the basis of reality itself. Life teaches this first, but we can be blind to something so obvious until we view it from an outside perspective. Being aware of them is key to overcoming them and treating everyone with the love, dignity and respect we all deserve as children of God, made in His image and Likeness. One of my biggest inspiration... In this movie I learnt two things 1. Compounding interest ,what it is and what it does. 2. Certain battles are best avoided , realise the limitations of your wisdom or strength.

To openly discriminate on the basis of race is wildly, wildly illegal nowadays, and if somebody actually declined a man on the basis of the color of his skin a lawsuit would come straight up from hell itself (not to mention the social outrage). Of course, this assumes the man in question doesn't actually pose a risky loan customer, for even if credit score doesn't care about skin color, bankers won't loan out to bad credit, and the sad state of things today is it is statistically likely that a random person of African descent will not have a good credit.
Such delusion is disrespectful to the works of men like Bernard. Things are not perfect, but alleging that nothing has changed and the situation today is comparable to the way things were then is disingenuous. It's easy to think that way, when all we've been taught is that poc cannot possibly succeed in a white world, but it's a lie.

This film rates alongside, 'The Pursuit Of Happyness', & 'Hidden Figures' as absolute greats. As a white guy, I've never been able to comprehend (or reconcile) the issue of segregation as a life ethos - irrespective of skin colour; we are all muscle, bone & sinew beneath that external veneer. Mackie & L. Jackson were perfectly placed to demonstrate the inequalities (& exigencies) of life - particularly in that era - it's a phenomenal film; definitely one to watch. To claim you or I or white people as a whole had comparable struggles and discrimination as black Americans is absolutely laughable. I'd suggest you read up on some history like the Jim Crow era, segregation, and the refusal of banks to give black people home and business loans legally until the 80s. Look up redlining and what happened to affluent black neighborhoods like black wall street. There's an American precedent to destroy black success whenever possible. I used to be just like you, but history may change your mind.

Today the black community has the obstacles of broken homes, gov dependency and environment. Still they are able to overcome. There are multiple blackmen and women who have come out of the hood who are successful or better themselves by not falling prey to those obstacles.

@@stevenayare6097 It's pretty easy to judge someone. The way they carry themselves. Their body language. The way they talk. How they interact with others. You can create a basic profile within seconds of meeting someone. And there does come a point where risk vs reward comes into play. An example that I have personally dealt with in real life is if I hire a black man to work for me and he ends up being the worst employee I ever had, I fire him. I then hire another black man, similar attitude, similar demeanor, similar way of carrying himself, speaking, dress. He, too, was an awful employee and I fire him. I hire a third, a fourth, a fifth, all of them sharing these characteristics, all of them being awful employees. It's perfectly reasonable for me to say "you know what, I'm not going to hire these black men anymore". Now sure it's possible the sixth black man who comes in dressed like they were, body language like theirs, talking like they did, it's entirely possible he'd be the best employee I ever had. But is it worth it for me to take that risk? No, it's not. There's nothing wrong with this, this is nature, this is basic human, I can't mind-read, I can't know if someone's good, and life is not so luxurious that we're afforded the ability to sit down and intimately get to know every single person we meet. This is why generalizations exist. This is why deserving respect is important. This is why fixing yourself to fit societal norms is important. Because I have more important things in my life than you, so if you wanna ensure I give you enough time for you to earn my respect, you had best start off with a good cover.

This was actually a true story, however, I believe modern day racism prevented this film from ever hitting the market because it would expose the racism of some present day banks, and the way they do business.
So I tried searching for this movie to watch and its sad to see that searching engines are not even displaying this movie. You have to search "the banker anthony mackie" for you to find this movie, and even then, its only on DVD and in a different region code than the US. You can tell a lot of effort went into suppressing this movie.

Was glad to see in the end Matt didn't betray them, made what happened seem not as bad. Though it would have been nice if a new investigation could have started once the system was less corrupt with racism and they got some kind of justice.
Matt could’ve stabbed Bernard in the back and taken everything from him while understanding the advantage of his privilege as a white man but he didn’t. This shows you that Bernard knew what kind of people he trusted and associated with.

As black man I have spent my life by many of these examples. I was fortunate to walk a different path and too learned how to manage my money and play this financial game. I have decent investments and other securities for my future. Banks would love to deny me a loan. I can see it in their faces after running my credit score. My wife and I have maintained darn near perfect credit scores, we keep our finances in order and don't live beyond our means. I even have a perfect driving record LOL!!! Please don't take this as bragging. I've worked hard to maintain this and fully understand that others don't have it like that and that many of the opportunities I was able to come across they just don't have. But I only say the things I say above to show that you do in fact have to try and change your thinking early on to achieve your goals and dreams. Notice what they invested in? Real-estate and financial institutions. Not clothes, jewelry or cars. Those are depreciating assets. Real-estate etc. among a few other worthwhile endeavors can bring residual income. But do understand that while I have perfect credit and all that there are many in the world where none of that means a thing to them and you're just seen as another person of color that's beneath them.
My now deceased husband came to Canada from Jamaica "penniless" He worked on construction and saved his money... until he had a down payment for a 6-apartment bldg. He died at 72, a multi millionaire [barely had any schooling]

Instantly watched this movie and I loved every second of it. It showed the steps they had to take to improve something they truly believed in. People nowadays don’t even like to look back on what our parents and grand parents grew up in. They did something no one else would. Amazing movie 8/10

This truly is an inspirational movie. Bernard fought to improve the lives of his fellow men. While he may not have brought the change Dr. King did, Bernard improved the housing market for black people in America.
This is another lesson in the ridiculousness of racism my people have dealt with for far too long. You can be the most brilliant person but there's still that barrier of racism to deal with.

Love the story of the film and the way Bernard overcame the discrimination he faced with a rational mind and saw his dreams to reality and fulfilling his promise to his wife for a better life.
There’s a very important part of this story that was glossed over, his family member. His family member provided HIS family with a roof over their heads and a place to sleep. Though not an ideal situation, his family member helped him the best way they could. The lesson that SHOULD be highlighted is one does not succeed alone. A strong foundation laid by family (or strong support system) can help ensure individual success. Granted he did all the tough work, but at least he didn’t have to start at the bottom of the barrel. Just don’t forget those that helped you along the way.
I am an Asian-American first generation and my real estate agent told me that the house was too big for me and gave to someone who has the same color. The discrimination in this land is more toxic than a nuke. That was not the only case, I was in a nursing program and I was purposely failed and one of the professors had admitted to me a few months later. All I can wish and hope is justice to everyone who have less prejudices like me.

There's a lot to digest from a movie like this!! Kudos to the studio executives for having the fortitude to approve a project like this that doesn't white wash the levels, stigma and proliferation that discrimination and racism plays in the lives of the people it oppress! Kudos to the director and producers for telling the story without fear of backlash from the people it highlights and the institutions, policies and procedures they use to oppress black people and their communities! Ably aided by the Federal Government at the time and even now as a lot of those policies and regulations that oppressed then is still in place..
FWIW, as far as I know, a studio didn’t green light this but it was independently produced and then sold after the fact to apple. There was a lot of stress on set due to the fact that it wasn’t backed by a big budget and some of the crew hires were causing a lot of problems with filming efficiently and consequently stretched the budget thin.

Black people were never given reparations for hundreds of years of slavery, and were still hamstringed after the fact, while people today just berate them for not catching up. Black neighborhoods are targeted disproportionately by policing, and generally more actively policed against. Black people are generally given harsher sentences for similar crimes committed by other people, or just found guilty more often. Because many black people are poor due to historical influence, property values are low in their communities. This means that schools in their districts do not get proper funding, because the US bases a school's worth on the property value of its surroundings. Really, much of it is a mixture of actual malice, or leftovers from a previous generation's malice. It's not as if people just not writing that they are discriminating against black people has stopped them from doing it. MANY people are still alive and kicking from the times segregation was a thing, it's not some ancient history which has no effects today.

I say non-biased cuz the studies you'd site usually leave out various factors such as them being repeat offenders. Being poor doesn't automatically effect property value. There's plenty of impoverished white communities that don't deal with these kinds of issues. They have low property value because they're usually racked with crime and run-down buildings. Not because they're poor. It is really ancient history and most of what you said is easily debunked and not justification for the failures of blacks today. It's honestly not that hard. Stop breaking the law, keep your buildings in good shape, go to school, get a job, and it wouldn't take long for blacks to be respected members of society. Instead they just run around Burning, Looting, and Murdering because some drugged up thug died in police custody, and then they act shocked that people take issue with them. I don't know why you people insist on bending over backwards. If blacks want to be treated equal to whites, then ACT equal to whites. Until blacks do that they are not equal to whites, as actions matter far more than their skin color.

People fight, and the fights may grow, and suddenly there are people in it that have no idea what it is about, so people start making up reasons, and picking sides. That's one, and then there are other factors, like new things are scary, you don't share language, and it's easier to just stick together, and keep up going. So people might not be racist, but not approving anyone bit too strange feeling. Similar looks may tell about what the person has gone through before, and if they share something with you. But aren't there places these days where people don't share anything, so people who seem to carry visible tells of places they might have gone through, tells you about that possibility. People who have gone rougher grounds might be less forgiving, and sharing. That reminds me of the story: stranger comes to a village asking help, and does not get any, but only after they started to make stone soup for food, which made the villagers sad and caring for the stranger, because they saw the stranger had the drive to open his back, and work for something that could have been total waste of time. That's why people who are foreigners, but are able to show that they know their language may get free service.
Racism is easy to figure out. Most Racism comes from having problems with said race. We give our own race a free pass though. My friend grew up in the 80s in Hawaii as a little white kid. He was constantly getting picked on, then beat the shit out of a kid who was picking on him, got kicked out. His mom was getting teased and harrased as well. So they left. My friend absolutely hated Hawaiian people with a passion. He doesn't anymore, Racism doesn't just sprout out the ground out of nowhere.
It's how humans (and all other animals) behave. People will have a greater tendency to help other people who look like them, sound like them, have the same belief system as they do, have the same behavior pattern, etc. This is because all life forms will behave in such a way to maximize gene reproduction. More similarities = more likely to be a relative = more shared genes. And helping those with more shared genes is akin to helping your own genes reproduce.
My father sold textiles whole sale. For all his years in business, he hired men to help. He sometimes had to let some workers go, but he always kept the two first men he hired, working for him. They were Black. He trusted them more than anyone. My father was a white Jew, born in Poland, fought in WW2 against the Nazis, and came to the US after the war. We always spoke about the two Blacks as if they were family…which, in a sense, they were. Charlie and Major.

I'm African American. I was trying to buy an office building and I asked for a commercial loan at a bank. They never replied to my request, although I went to their office, provided them the business plan for the building. A few months later, another bank approved me for a commercial loan. As I was trying to close, the bank that refused me the loan signed a 5 year lease for a space in the building I was purchasing. The negotiations started with the previous owner's leasing agent. But, I had to provide the approvals, as it was during the due diligence period, as I was taking over the building. Once the bank heard that a new owner of the building was about to take over, they send one of their sales agent to meet the future buyer (me), trying to offer me the commercial loan they refused me a few months earlier. I spoked to the salesperson, but declined their loan. A few months later, they were the tenant in my building ...

If Matt was a different type of person that backstabs at the earliest sign of trouble, the situation could have been different. We all face decisions in life and sometimes it tests our moral character. Even in the face of difficulty, choosing to do the right thing is always available.

This was a great movie. My grandfather(my dad's dad) was in WWII. He left the army and tried to get a VA loan and then a conventional bank loan to start a refrigeration business. Got turned down both times. My grandparents saved up $200 to start the business themselves. My grandfather got contracts for commercial refrigeration because of his last name. And a few folks thought he was just the foreman/lead guy and not the owner. It helped that my grandfather had a white sounding name. My grandmother said he would say 'if I do a great job, my color won't matter.' He was successful in spite of seemingly insurmountable obstacles in his(their, my grandmother helped) way. Seemingly we are better but until this kind of thinking is eradicated, the promise of this country will never be realized.

Sometimes things may not look right or might not be the right thing to do. ..but when you believe in yourself and know that because of the colour of your skin you are being deprived of your rights; treated poorly as though you don't belong; then you will do anything to prove to your oppressors that you too should have a piece of the cake. I don't know if I am making sense; but in this case I emphatize with Bernard because he worked very hard to succeed and it was pulled from under his feet just like that; even though he acted against the law; his so called friends knew that some of the things they did were wrong in a sense ...still, they should not have abandoned him. Many of them went along with his brilliant ideas and benefited from it. Traiters they are.
Wisdom is one thing i truly admire from the main character in this story. Wisdom is what makes a human at higher place than others. Although he faces the real problem -- aka racism -- but he still can think rationally with carefully counted steps. I admire this movie just like The Butler and Hidden Figures. @Chomky Squirrel Everyone uses Generalisations, or Stereotypes for pretty much everything. You have to have a bases for how to react to whatever, and you get that knowledge usually through experience of some kind.
There is a difference between that, and hating someone, just because of their race.
There is no reset button on life, so everyone uses their past experiences to judge future matters.
If everyone treated each other with kindness, and respect from today forward, we would see hate in people go way, way down.
Also, keep in mind. It's movies that made aliens do experiments on people, and aliens always seem to be bad, there are rarely ever good encounters with aliens.
So right now, everyone's experience with a alien is bad, and any future encounter with one will have people react badly to them. Because we made them fear them, before any proof that they exist.
As a fan I agree that sci-fi can and does teach this, but if I may add: I also know the science-fiction genre teaches these common biases and initial misjudgments from the basis of reality itself. Life teaches this first, but we can be blind to something so obvious until we view it from an outside perspective. Being aware of them is key to overcoming them and treating everyone with the love, dignity and respect we all deserve as children of God, made in His image and Likeness. This is only possible through constant self-examination and an ever deepening relationship with the Triune God, who is Truth and Love itself.

To openly discriminate on the basis of race is wildly, wildly illegal nowadays, and if somebody actually declined a man on the basis of the color of his skin a lawsuit would come straight up from hell itself (not to mention the social outrage). Of course, this assumes the man in question doesn't actually pose a risky loan customer, for even if credit score doesn't care about skin color, bankers won't loan out to bad credit, and the sad state of things today is it is statistically likely that a random person of African descent will not have a good credit.
Such delusion is disrespectful to the works of men like Bernard. Things are not perfect, but alleging that nothing has changed and the situation today is comparable to the way things were then is disingenuous. It's easy to think that way, when all we've been taught is that poc cannot possibly succeed in a white world, but it's a lie.

As a white guy, I've never been able to comprehend (or reconcile) the issue of segregation as a life ethos - irrespective of skin colour; we are all muscle, bone & sinew beneath that external veneer. Mackie & L. Jackson were perfectly placed to demonstrate the inequalities (& exigencies) of life - particularly in that era - it's a phenomenal film; definitely one to watch. There isn't much of a comparison in the US between black and white struggles. To claim you or I or white people as a whole had comparable struggles and discrimination as black Americans is absolutely laughable. I'd suggest you read up on some history like the Jim Crow era, segregation, and the refusal of banks to give black people home and business loans legally until the 80s. Look up redlining and what happened to affluent black neighborhoods like black wall street. There's an American precedent to destroy black success whenever possible. I used to be just like you, but history may change your mind.

Today the black community has the obstacles of broken homes, gov dependency and environment. Still they are able to overcome. There are multiple blackmen and women who have come out of the hood who are successful or better themselves by not falling prey to those obstacles.

@@stevenayare6097 It's pretty easy to judge someone. The way they carry themselves. Their body language. The way they talk. How they interact with others. You can create a basic profile within seconds of meeting someone. And there does come a point where risk vs reward comes into play.
An example that I have personally dealt with in real life is if I hire a black man to work for me and he ends up being the worst employee I ever had, I fire him. I then hire another black man, similar attitude, similar demeanor, similar way of carrying himself, speaking, dress. He, too, was an awful employee and I fire him.
I hire a third, a fourth, a fifth, all of them sharing these characteristics, all of them being awful employees. It's perfectly reasonable for me to say "you know what, I'm not going to hire these black men anymore". Now sure it's possible the sixth black man who comes in dressed like they were, body language like theirs, talking like they did, it's entirely possible he'd be the best employee I ever had. But is it worth it for me to take that risk? No, it's not.
There's nothing wrong with this, this is nature, this is basic human, I can't mind-read, I can't know if someone's good, and life is not so luxurious that we're afforded the ability to sit down and intimately get to know every single person we meet. This is why generalizations exist. This is why deserving respect is important. This is why fixing yourself to fit societal norms is important. Because I have more important things in my life than you, so if you wanna ensure I give you enough time for you to earn my respect, you had best start off with a good cover.

This was actually a true story, however, I believe modern day racism prevented this film from ever hitting the market because it would expose the racism of some present day banks, and the way they do business.
So I tried searching for this movie to watch and its sad to see that searching engines are not even displaying this movie. You have to search "the banker anthony mackie" for you to find this movie, and even then, its only on DVD and in a different region code than the US. You can tell a lot of effort went into suppressing this movie.

As black man I have spent my life by many of these examples. I was fortunate to walk a different path and too learned how to manage my money and play this financial game. I have decent investments and other securities for my future. Banks would love to deny me a loan. I can see it in their faces after running my credit score. My wife and I have maintained darn near perfect credit scores, we keep our finances in order and don't live beyond our means. I even have a perfect driving record LOL!!!
Please don't take this as bragging. I've worked hard to maintain this and fully understand that others don't have it like that and that many of the opportunities I was able to come across they just don't have. But I only say the things I say above to show that you do in fact have to try and change your thinking early on to achieve your goals and dreams.
Notice what they invested in? Real-estate and financial institutions. Not clothes, jewelry or cars. Those are depreciating assets. Real-estate etc. among a few other worthwhile endeavors can bring residual income. But do understand that while I have perfect credit and all that there are many in the world where none of that means a thing to them and you're just seen as another person of color that's beneath them.
My now deceased husband came to Canada from Jamaica "penniless" He worked on construction and saved his money... until he had a down payment for a 6-apartment bldg. He died at 72, a multi millionaire [barely had any schooling]

There’s a very important part of this story that was glossed over, his family member. His family member provided HIS family with a roof over their heads and a place to sleep. Though not an ideal situation, his family member helped him the best way they could. The lesson that SHOULD be highlighted is one does not succeed alone. A strong foundation laid by family (or strong support system) can help ensure individual success. Granted he did all the tough work, but at least he didn’t have to start at the bottom of the barrel. Just don’t forget those that helped you along the way.

I am an Asian-American first generation and my real estate agent told me that the house was too big for me and gave to someone who has the same color. The discrimination in this land is more toxic than a nuke. That was not the only case, I was in a nursing program and I was purposely failed and one of the professors had admitted to me a few months later. All I can wish and hope is justice to everyone who have less prejudices like me.

There's a lot to digest from a movie like this!! Kudos to the studio executives for having the fortitude to approve a project like this that doesn't white wash the levels, stigma and proliferation that discrimination and racism plays in the lives of the people it oppress! Kudos to the director and producers for telling the story without fear of backlash from the people it highlights and the institutions, policies and procedures they use to oppress black people and their communities! Ably aided by the Federal Government at the time and even now as a lot of those policies and regulations that oppressed then is still in place..
FWIW, as far as I know, a studio didn’t green light this but it was independently produced and then sold after the fact to apple. There was a lot of stress on set due to the fact that it wasn’t backed by a big budget and some of the crew hires were causing a lot of problems with filming efficiently and consequently stretched the budget thin.

Black people were never given reparations for hundreds of years of slavery, and were still hamstringed after the fact, while people today just berate them for not catching up.
Black neighborhoods are targeted disproportionately by policing, and generally more actively policed against.
Black people are generally given harsher sentences for similar crimes committed by other people, or just found guilty more often.
Because many black people are poor due to historical influence, property values are low in their communities. This means that schools in their districts do not get proper funding, because the US bases a school's worth on the property value of its surroundings.
Really, much of it is a mixture of actual malice, or leftovers from a previous generation's malice. It's not as if people just not writing that they are discriminating against black people has stopped them from doing it. MANY people are still alive and kicking from the times segregation was a thing, it's not some ancient history which has no effects today.

Just because a democrat president started it to target blacks doesn't mean blacks, today, FORTY YEARS LATER, are still oppressed by it.
Black people were given reparations, they were given an entire country as reparations, just some didn't want to accept it and stayed here. You can't use their choice as ammunition for blacks today. Also impoverished immigrants can come over to america and be wealthy doctors in a single generation, so blacks have no excuse.
Ok but being more actively policed wouldn't do anything if they weren't breaking the law. Like you can stick a cop permanently in my neighborhood, the only thing that's gonna do is have a very bored cop. I never understood this argument because you're admitting blacks are committing crime, otherwise extra police wouldn't have anything to do.
There's never actually been any non-biased study that proved the whole 'blacks are given harsher studies'! I say non-biased cuz the studies you'd site usually leave out various factors such as them being repeat offenders.
Being poor doesn't automatically effect property value. There's plenty of impoverished white communities that don't deal with these kinds of issues. They have low property value because they're usually racked with crime and run-down buildings. Not because they're poor.
It is really ancient history and most of what you said is easily debunked and not justification for the failures of blacks today.
It's honestly not that hard. Stop breaking the law, keep your buildings in good shape, go to school, get a job, and it wouldn't take long for blacks to be respected members of society. Instead they just run around Burning, Looting, and Murdering because some drugged up thug died in police custody, and then they act shocked that people take issue with them. I don't know why you people insist on bending over backwards. If blacks want to be treated equal to whites, then ACT equal to whites. Until blacks do that they are not equal to whites, as actions matter far more than their skin color.

People fight, and the fights may grow, and suddenly there are people in it that have no idea what it is about, so people start making up reasons, and picking sides. That's one, and then there are other factors, like new things are scary, you don't share language, and it's easier to just stick together, and keep up going. So people might not be racist, but not approving anyone bit too strange feeling.
Similar looks may tell about what the person has gone through before, and if they share something with you. But aren't there places these days where people don't share anything, so people who seem to carry visible tells of places they might have gone through, tells you about that possibility.
People who have gone rougher grounds might be less forgiving, and sharing.
That reminds me of the story: stranger comes to a village asking help, and does not get any, but only after they started to make stone soup for food, which made the villagers sad and caring for the stranger, because they saw the stranger had the drive to open his back, and work for something that could have been total waste of time.
That's why people who are foreigners, but are able to show that they know their language may get free service.
Racism is easy to figure out. Most Racism comes from having problems with said race. We give our own race a free pass though. My friend grew up in the 80s in Hawaii as a little white kid. He was constantly getting picked on, then beat the shit out of a kid who was picking on him, got kicked out. His mom was getting teased and harrased as well. So they left. My friend absolutely hated Hawaiian people with a passion. He doesn't anymore, Racism doesn't just sprout out the ground out of nowhere.
It's how humans (and all other animals) behave. People will have a greater tendency to help other people who look like them, sound like them, have the same belief system as they do, have the same behavior pattern, etc. This is because all life forms will behave in such a way to maximize gene reproduction. More similarities = more likely to be a relative = more shared genes. And helping those with more shared genes is akin to helping your own genes reproduce.

My father sold textiles whole sale. For all his years in business, he hired men to help. He sometimes had to let some workers go, but he always kept the two first men he hired, working for him. They were Black. He trusted them more than anyone. My father was a white Jew, born in Poland, fought in WW2 against the Nazis, and came to the US after the war. We always spoke about the two Blacks as if they were family…which, in a sense, they were. Charlie and Major.
