One more thing, I don't think Victor ever saw themselves in Harlan in the sense of being an apocalyptic threat, but rather as the son he never had a chance to raise. From loving his mother to giving him part of his powers, Harlan is the closest thing to a child of his own that Victor ever had so he defends Harlan in the way a father would. It's why his fight with Alison is so intense, its a parental fight.
I'd say they had more of a sibling or self connection, both of their families have trouble understanding them. Harlen ultimately loses all connection to his family like Victor had in season 1. Additionally, they both are able to find comfort in music/sound.
On Allison and Viktor's feud this season, I really wish he'd turned around and reminded Alison that she was the reason he hadn't grown up learning how to control his powers. He'd spent like over 20 years with the same misery she accused him of giving her and he wasn't solely to blame when she lost what made her happy.
@@nousnaimonspasritz I didn't say he wasn't? I'm saying it's stupid to call her responsible of something she was forced to do as a kid. The villain has always been Reginald, not the siblings
My problem with Allison and her kinda villainous development is that it felt like we’re supposed to be on her side more than is warranted (in my opinion). Like we see that Reginald was trying to get his wife back but the audience is never meant to root for him. Everyone acknowledges that Reginald is not a good person, yet Allison gets a pass because she’s sad or didn’t mean it That Way or whatever. Same in season four ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@@adsafgasgasdfasdf they were all traumatized and abused, the show isn’t trying to convince us Alison had it the worst but everyone responds to trauma differently. Doesn’t make her any less of a victim than the other kids.
Your point regarding the world not feeling real is the exact feeling I had but couldn’t articulate on. It’s so annoying as there really isn’t much world building and the bits that are, they’re poorly executed. I genuinely forgot about the fact Reginald is an alien and that Five created the commission and I think if these plot points had more build up or better pay off they could’ve been so memorable but yeah this season seems like a Temu version of the show (minus the Footloose scene, that one had all the fun the show is known for).
@@arbyswitch5580 Concept wise I think there was some cool ideas such as the subway system being linked to different timelines, and the idea of the two different elements (marigold and the other one) but in the end it was a disappointment. I mean to start, it had only 6 episodes compared to every other season having 10. I would’ve really liked them to have brought older Ben back instead of sparrow Ben as I didn’t really warm up to him in season 3 and even when they were trying to make him sympathetic this season, I wasn’t vibing with it. Another thing is Reginald and that were still stuck with an alternate version, I know Viktor had his closure with him but it doesn’t feel complete as this is an alternate version who never inflicted the trauma on him (although if Viktor grew up under him I’m sure he would have done the same) The Five and Lila relationship… I mean I always felt the two characters had chemistry but I never felt like it was a romantic one. I think this season had so many cool ideas but I just think the length really killed it. The ending was good but I think with how rushed everything was I felt like the gloom of the ending was just the cherry on top of the bad things that came before but with that said, I still enjoyed moments of the season, Gean and Jean were fun, the umbrella cast have good chemistry as always and when there was action it was still good. I would say I still preferred this season over 3 though but it’s potential was crushed
allison always clearly had a dark side. in s1 they show that she rumored her ex husband to be in love with her. i would've been all for a descent like viktor's, but it just didn't shake out right. viktor did a lot more damage, but because of it luther choked him out, they locked him in a vault, and seriously considered killed him to the point where luther almost assassinated him in s2. allison got, like, a single frown and she loudly objected to having gotten even that. she demanded to be treated like she'd done nothing wrong, which viktor never did. idk straightup cold blooded murder feels more real than a powers-fueled rampage and i don't have much faith in the show to address it. the writing already felt weird, with everyone validating allison's stance that harlan erased her daughter by killing her mom. i don't get why she couldn't have been upset for her mom's sake or why no one brought up that simply not being in umbrella academy would've meant her life would've been completely different anyway.
I agree, she had a dark side from the start of the show. I really think season 2, everything she went through in the 60’s timeline, hardened her even more, kind of pushing her over the edge to become really vindictive and self centered.
I've been saying this since Series 1. She is behaving like she always has. She's always been a more internal character so people projected onto her. And so now people think she's a good person, when they showed that she has a history of doing this type of thing. In Series 1. Honestly, did people only listen to the Radiohead and not the Allison part?
Of course Allison would be upset about her daughter rather than her mother. She didn’t know her mom and has no connection to her, she birthed Claire. Her goal has always been Claire
@@niyaakbar1098 my point is that claire was already erased. even if allison had been born, her life would've been completely different. she never would've met her ex.
Y'all get that Ben is different/not what you expected/not what you wanted bc he is, technically speaking, not actually the Ben from season one? It is in fact not exactly the same timeline and he's not inherently the same guy. I liked the subversion of our expectations in season three! I'm disappointed that they put him on a train in Korea at the end of season three and then didn't really get into whatever that was. I know they "got into it" but it felt like a cop out tbh. Like yes, thanks a lot for telling me he ended up in prison for wire fraud. Did that even happen when he was in Korea? What was he doing out there?
@@arbyswitch5580 yeah we get that sparrow ben is different, but umbrella/ghost Ben had a completely different and more likeable personality and that's why we're saying we're sad he's gone
Hi everyone, CORRECTION! There couldn’t be any alternate versions of our main characters because Harlan killed their mums, that’s my bad; sorry, bit of a blunder, ignore that point!
Late to this but I believe that because in s2 the main cast met Hargreeves before the adoption he decided not to adopt them (also saying he would never choose people like them?) but because Ben wasn’t with them he adopted him still.
I think I'm probably giving the writers way more credit than deserved in saying this, but what if there was a meta textual message in that scene? Like it's so outlandish and cute and fun and then it's literally a hallucination induced by Jayme's hawk tuah. Like the writers were like "awwwww, do you miss this sense of whimsy? That's a real shame for you, kiddo, we're moving on from that"
Unpopular opinion but I kinda hate them 😂 They take me out of the scene and ruin the immersion for me like the show switches to a yt video or some kind of skit
21:20 So with Luther I think that is his arc he’s suppressed his true personality who he really is as Luther and being Hargreaves’ Number 1. From being the stern, business only, superhero leader to being the funny, goofball, romantic, childlike Luther Hargreaves. Remember he’s incredibly emotionally stunted to being a 13 year old because he’s very much an opposite Five. While Five is a man in a child’s body, Luther is a child in a man’s body.
I feel like everyone forgets this. Luther is veryyyy underdeveloped and traumatized from his adulthood with being turned into a monkey and being stuck on the moon. He was also never an actual leader, he just had the title, Reginald controlled everything.
They also never uniformly agreed that the number one represented the leader role. Just Luther and Diego talked about it, but nobody actually listened to Luther. Marcus was a true leader, but when Ben tried to take the number one place, nobody listened to him either.
The mothers' deaths make no sense. Harlan sensed the arrival of the marigold on October 1, 1989 and recognized it as a part of Viktor, and so assumed Viktor had finally returned for him. He desperately reached out to Viktor for comfort since his mother had just died, and lost control of his powers. Thus, Viktor's mother should've been the only one affected by this. Harlan was seeking Viktor specifically, and Viktor was the only Umbrella who he ever really interacted with, anyway. His loss of control should've killed only Viktor's mother. Or, if his marigold was connecting with all the rest of the marigold in a way that harmed the mothers, then all 43 of the marigold-infused mothers should've died, not just the Umbrellas' mothers.
Well, you didn't pay attention. The intro in season 3 says 16 mothers gave birth on that day. It wasn't just the Umbrella mothers, also the show didn't really confirm either that all Umbrella mothers died. Though only Viktors Mum would have been more plausible and a good idea, they would have lacked the clue to what's going on, which would have needed to be fixed by the writers.
Call me crazy but whenever the kugel shockwaves it comes from the academy building, didnt anyone outside of the building question themselves why that specific building is causing this problem or reported to the government, the police or anything
Nobody except the audience saw the shockwave, they didn't even react when it passed through them. They reacted only to the effects. Also the Sparrow Academy said there were an overwhelming amount of missing reports at the police. The show just didn't focus on the police.
You're absolutely right about the covid changes - I work on unscripted TV shows and the budgets during covid were adjusted for covid expenses such as testing kits, social distancing accommodations and additional shoot days if someone tested positive. Some productions added that budget to other line items but many networks took it away. For example, let's imagine a show cost $2,000,000 to make, $60,000 was for covid but that was taken from that original budget. When covid budget was no longer needed because guidelines changed, the budget readjusted to $1,940,000. I would think shows that are closer to an hour long would be affected more because they have more to film and edit. And inflation is making costs crazy expensive now. But the use of AI to "cut costs" is both replacing many jobs and killing projects. But the networks are killing their own shows because they don't see the ROI they want. Some shows like Umbrella Academy are niche and harder to market so they probably want it to be received poorly and not renew.
i might be wrong here but i was under the impression that the fourth season was set to be the final season when it was renewed for season 4, but there is something to consider about the potential of executive meddling sabotaging the last two seasons
@@arbyswitch5580if I’m remembering correctly I’m pretty sure they got contracted for 5 seasons originally but after season 3s poor performance they cut it down to one more season instead and then cut it down from 10 to 6 episodes during some point filming or editing from Netflix’s end confirmed by people who worked on the show this season
I understand your points and do agree (although I do like season 3 still :D), but Viktor does actually say "what the hell is a kugelblitz" and you say no one questions it
also a really weird thing I see about season 3 which no one talks about, is how the whole world gets blitzed while Klaus and Reginald are still far out on their road trip, and then they randomly arrive back at the hotel wayyy after most the world is pretty much gone
I also completely agree with Allison, I remember very clearly finishing episode 7 and then feeling really exited that there are 3 episodes left where this conflict will unravel, I was most exited to see where it was all going and then I was disappointed when Allison apologises to Viktor.. but obviously that turned out to be due to her deal with Reginald
@@marshallstannus I mean yeah But she was mentioned yet nothing came of it It'd be great if SOMETHING happened It doesn't even have to be a big thing of "Oh she's still alive" "there's a mystery" The end of season 3 luther going off to search for sloane So why not build on that ONE scene of luther coming to terms wtih the fact that she's really gone would've been great But all we got were some off hand comments from luther :/
@@wizardkumaanimations9984read an article about this actually, they had a storyline planned for her and they cut it for time. She was gonna not remember Luther and then he was gonna have to make her remember him which honestly doesn't sound so fun, but I'd bet it would have been less cringe to watch than Lila conducting an emotional affair with the 70 year old man who resembles a fourteen year old boy and, more importantly, FUCKIN KILLED HER PARENTS (WHEN AND ALSO HOW DID SHE CATCH FEELINGS LILA HE KILLED YOUR FUCKIN PARENTS)
18:08 there’s no alternate version of the others because the father didn’t like them when they met in season 2. So he picked other children. He picked Ben as Ben wasn’t there in season 2
no?? that's not the truth ellen. Harlan killed their mothers, so that's why there isn't an alternate version of them. Did y'all forget the whole Klaus-Five-Amish thing?
@@sirjideafter the events in texas in season 2 harlan went on to kill all the mothers of the original umbrella members which is why they didnt have alternate versions of themselves. they were never born in the new timeline, which is what created the paradox
@@Berndog17 true, but actually the show didn't confirm that all 6 Umbrella mothers were killed (minus Ben). And the season 3 intro said there were 16 mothers while season 1 said it were 43, so Halran offed 27 of them and probably at random. They kinda left the possibility open that another mother in addition to Ben's one survived.
Loved loved first two seasons! They had everything! But season 3 was so off… the effects, the visuals, the scripts are all over the place and the quality is lower. And they hyped up the Sparrows so much, they had excellent marketing - and then we barely get to know them! Half of them are killed right of, others are not much interesting as characters. I love the idea of s4 for them to be in a world with no powers - but i m scared it wud be lazy low quality writing as well((( I love those characters i want an epic last season to send them off!
I agree. From what I remember, there were so many side plots shoved in such little time but none of them felt all that conclusive. The character dynamics felt off and no one ever really listened to each other which started to get annoying throughout the show. There were times where I feel like I was genuinely getting whiplash from how much the show was trying to shove in in one season 😭 I wish they had just focused on the sparrows and umbrella academy rivalry, which I feel like was what they hyped everyone up for in the first place but was ultimately left in an anticlimactic ending
I agree! It would have been really interesting to have a whole season where the umbrellas had no superpowers! That would have been an interesting change to their circumstances. If only the writers felt a little bold and up for a challenge
I think season 3 was on par with the previous seasons. There were a few things to iron out, I don't really care for an excuse like Covid, they should have putten more effort into it, but just a handful of scenes and the rest was very well done in my opinion. All this criticism about season 3 seems unreasonable and out of place to me. Some comments I read above there were just people not paying attention. Season 4 is a different story, as I see it there are only 3 seasons and one fanfic season. I also think it would have been more interesting if they didn't have powers for the majority of the season. Maybe get them back at the very end. And since the ending felt more rushed and lazy as the rest of the season, I suspect they surprised the writers with the cutting of the episodes and they had to ditch their original plans.
maybe folks found it difficult to pay attention to a story that didnt know where it was going and had one too many moving parts with no pay off? can you blame people for not having their attention engaged by the not-very-good third season of the umbrella academy? im still not entirely certain i ever finished the third season because the things that were set up were NOT resolved, which - imo - is shitty writing. you can't put people in the position of anticipating the introduction of six new characters, and have them sit in that anticipation for TWO FUCKIN YEARS and expect them to be particularly happy when the entire pay off there is a montage "introducing" the character and then...yeah i guess they are there but youre not supposed to care about the fact that theyre underdeveloped bc theyre not the umbrellas so theyre not the leads. also i think the actor who played that kid is hella talented but his character did not really serve the plot (point to where diego wanted to be a dad in the first two seasons, maybe i missed it bcause i wasnt paying attention?)
So, the Sparrows never died due to the Kugelblitz power waves, they all died from directly touching it or interacting with it directly. Marcus got pushed in by Grace. The bird lady was trying to protect the cube and the cube guy literally was holding it inside of him. It makes sense by Sparrow Ben and Sloane never got sucked in, they never touched it.
I was devastated by Allison's villain arc in S3, but I agree that it makes perfect sense. I think I was just personally really disappointed because in S1, despite the fact that Victor is an apocalyptic threat, she recognized the ways in which that was a self-fulfilling prophecy, and yet she doesn't do the same for Harlan, so at first glance, it seems like a betrayal of her character. But when you think about it, you could also interpret it as her expressing her regret for not stopping Victor the first time and deciding not to make the same mistake again, which makes perfect sense given what she's lost again and again. But my favorite thing about Allison in S3 is that out of all the characters, she most clearly shows the trauma of going through these constant alternate realities, to the point where it seems like she stops feeling like the world is real. It explains why she starts acting out, because she feels like there will be no consequences anyway when the next wipe comes around.
I agree it does make sense. Allison did pull the final trigger for the end of the world in season 1, it could have ended differently if she hadn't had shown mercy. And she was punished the most for it, the show charged her scenes with the most emotions while others got a rather light hearted treatment.
Season one was weird, but thats why I liked it. It was wacky, silly, crazy, but well-written (mostly) and compelling. The acting was good for most characters. Then in season 2 it got even weirder, some may argue too weird, but I still truly enjoyed it. The enemies were so GOOD and I wanted to know what happened. Then season 3 wasn't weird in a good way, it was just plain terrible. I stopped caring about the characters and got bored. Nothing they did made sense for what the characters had been built up to be previously. "Bizarre" is the perfect word to describe season 3. I didn't even get halfway through before I just forgot it existed. I read the ending of season 4 and just shook my head.
This is rly relatable...I did actually watch season four because it was getting absolutely panned by everyone and I try to form my own conclusions- I figured since it was only six episodes and I had a free day I might as well finish it up. I realized almost immediately that I'm not certain I actually finished season three...and what's really unfortunate is that I didn't really need to have done to follow the "plot" of the final season. Very disappointed with how this show panned out. Had naively hoped it would sustain its own energy and vibes until the end. Oh well!
I don't get what problem you have with season 3, and the criticism of the video I think is unfounded, makes me shake my head. Some criticism in the comments were from people not paying attention. Well, on the other hand, season 4 can be called objectively bad.
@@nightmareTomek I dont have a problem with anything. I just dont like the second half of this show 💀 season 3 episodes 1-3 were boring imo, the random music wasn't well-placed or well explained, the acting seemed to somehow get worse, and the writing was off the rails.
Like I understand why Allison was distraught but I felt like the whole cast just turned into mutes when ever she would start berating them. Like no one would ever bark back, like you think the king of shit talking Five would have a remark, Allison would say something mean, everyone shuts up but when Viktor would try to say something, hes shut down.
You really spam that shot of marcus on top of the building and its so funny cause the cgi is horrendous but also good LORD the knockers on that man could cause their own kugelblitz at this point 😵
I think the thing about Grace and Pogo's variants is that Grace left Reggie because of Diego's meddling, So Grace wouldn't have as much care built into her, and Grace being a huge part of Pogo's upbringing, her leaving would leave Pogo less loyal than original Pogo, at least that was my read on it. Also, it does make sense that Ben is the only alternate, seeing as Harlan hadn't met him due to him being a ghost, so he didn't have that connection to Ben like he did the others. I quite liked the third season, but I do agree that the world felt almost too empty, that it wasn't built enough, and I can see your point about Allison, it seems people tend to forget that we're seeing her after a bunch of not-so-okay things she did and during season one and two, we were seeing her learn from being manipulative, the nature of her power is manipulation, the fact that she rumoured someone (Most likely Patrick or Claire) into loving her, and season three was just her snapping point of a "no point in being good if everything keeps getting taken away" attitude. I still really dislike what they did between her and Luther, but it again shows that she was always okay with moving on from him, knowing that he was there as a backup because she isn't really a morally clean person
I'd always wondered if the snippet of Allison rumouring someone to love her was directed at Luther when they were younger. Like she knew she'd have the perfect excuse to string him along (like oh no we're kinda like siblings this isn't okay!!) but wanted him to stay infatuated with her as they grew up anyway. In hindsight I don't think that works with how old her voice sounds in the clip and the context of it (can't fully remember) but it made the scene with her assaulting him in s3 make a lot of sense to me when I'd already had suspicions she had used her powers to manipulate his feelings before.
It never made sense to me that she used her powers on him before season 3, because her powers were never displayed as something that lasts for very long, and Luther loved her for decades even while on the moon. However when she rumored him in season 3 I think although it's dislikable, it is realistic and there are some behaving like that in our timeline as well. Things like Grace and Pogo, the whole timeline got kinda changed like through chaos theory, one thing led to another and then to another. Doesn't really matter to me why Grace changed, there are a thousand possibilities. I think season 3 is on par with the other seasons. A few things could have been ironed out, but I don't see them as mistakes but as wacky like the show is knows for. For example when Klaus is hit by all these cars, this is catastrophically nonsensical of course, but when in season 2 they fought in that mansion and blew all the windows, nobody below bats an eye and nobody here criticises that. Or how Five was onto Lila so quickly is a bit weird as well. There were minor mistakes all over the seasons, but they're all just minor.
you fucking got the ending right !! really curious to see your take on season 4. i honestly agree it should’ve worked but the execution was HORRENDOUS and i was just like staring at my screen fucking bored and pissed off by the end
16:36 I don't think anyone reacted because Luther was the only person to witness Reggie's alien tentacle sword thing. He did then tell Klaus in the void but I don't think Klaus brings it up to anyone. Now them not reacting to when Allison sliced his head in half and his green blood and insect like internal organs seems strange. But they were also all on the brink of death so somewhat makes sense.
SPOILERS FOR SEASON 4 So I didn't rewatch season 3 before season 4, thus all I remembered was that 1: they were stuck in a hotel and there was an apocalypse they had to fight. 2: there was some betrayal or something and they did a Thing to lose their powers and shift timelines. 3: that Ben was from this timeline and there was a Sparrow Academy. 4: Viktor transitioned. I thought Sloane was a normie with no powers. I feel like Season 3 left Season 4 in a bad position. They'd done too many apocalypses, it got old. I don't think Season 4 could've had any ending resulting from an apocalypse that would've felt satisfying. If they survive, you're wondering what the difference is, if they die you're wondering why you wasted your time with the first three. I think the only way they could have ended successfully would have been showing the characters actually function properly enough to stop the apocalypse before it became a thing, but then still realise that they were the problem. Not very happy with the ending to say the least, especially because they did NOT build up Jennifer and Ben properly.
You forgot all the important things. xD I think the setup for season 4 was really more than great, they just didn't capitalize on it. Like reverted it too quickly. In season 3 when the team didn't want to go with Reginald, they spent a whole episode on it, but in season 4 when the team didn't want their powers back, 3 minutes later they had their powers back. And the ending came so quickly it feels to me that halfway through the last episode the writers received the message that their 10 episodes are going to be cut down to 6. They had to throw away their original plan and just do something that maybe would make sense if everybody in the audience were drunk. I think they should have gotten their powers back way later, maybe even in the latter half of the season. Five could have stumbled into the train station without blinking inside. I also think that there were enough apocalypses for the show, it would have been very hard to make a 4th apocalypse without it feeling repetitive. Instead they could have gone down a route where they assume Reginald is evil and start fighting him.
There were *some* news reports; we overheard tv reporters discussing disappearances of people at least twice. Though it was subtle enough to fall under the radar.
I was going to say Ben was the only alternate because Harlen never met Ben so there was no connection when he wiped out the others moms by accident but I don’t think he met anyone else other than 7, maybe 1 and 5. Weird.
@@maybeahuman4580 I’m really sorry but are you getting Harlan mixed up with the umbrellas’ dad? I was so excited for Alfonso's character because of the actor is a Degrassi TNG alum and was so disappointed when they killed him off without giving him a storyline.
They did a terrible job with victors powers. He can control it, then he can’t. Then he can, then he can’t. Then he loses them, gets ‘‘em back, can’t control them, then he can. Like pick a lane holy crap. They just chose when he can or can’t control them.
Great video but I very recently finished binging the last two seasons so maybe I have a fresher memory than you... I gotta correct some stuff. 1) The Sparrows didn't ALL get killed by the blitz. Only three of them did. The deformed guy and spitting girl got killed by Harlan. And Marcus dying bc of the blitz made perfect sense. He literally touched the thing. And 2) While it's understandable why Allison killed Harlan, it wasn't at all justfied. She only killed him bc she was angry and needed someone to take it out on. Plus, she knew it would hurt Vikor and I think she wanted that. But he was no longer a threat. His powers got successfully taken that time. She killed him for vengence, plain and simple
Allison has always sucked as a person. People way too often equate thst as sucking as a character. Klaus sucks as a person, as does every MC in this show, but personally I relate to Klaus. Potentially funny that Allison sees herself as being perfect and blameless and Klaus sees himself as being broken and flawed, while the people who relate to Allison don't react well to her being shown as not being perfect.
Despite all the seasons flaws i still LOVE this season. I think the reason season 2 is my favorite season and not 1 is because i usually like seasons or episodes of shows where we already know the characters and we’re seeing them do and react to stuff.
16:55-17:02 that is such a concise way to phrase my personal experience watching tte final two seasons of Umbrella Academy. Thank you for putting the thoughts into words 💕
i love tua but this season could have used so much more world building. and while I'm super excited for the fourth and final season, my hopes aren't high. i hope a lot of questions in season four get answered, specifically the jennifier incident
I liked season 3, the whole concept of the kugelblitz is really interesting, parts are frustrating yes, but i personally feel like its not as bad as people say it is, season 4 on the other hand, well...
In the defense of Zack Snyder's Sucker Punch: That one actually made sense as all of the action scenes are set in action packed genres which typically are male centered and its part of the overall satire and feminist message Zack had originally intended for the film.
I always grieving of S3 fumbling. Pacing start to feel jarring and had soap drama vibe at the wedding episode. And here 02:49 what you said is true. The series shot like its in dream sequence.
Right in the beginning of the video you mentioned how Covid killed so many TV shows, so I just have to mention that I believe Covid is mostly responsible for the horrendous finale of supernatural. Covid also ruined my high school experience but I’m almost more mad about it ruining my favorite show-😂
18:37 “The only way this can be redeemed is if the answer to properly stopping the apocalypse is, ‘the Umbrella Academy needs to die’” And the Monkey’s Paw Curled…
it’s such a shame. those first two seasons were genuinely interesting and felt like they were building to something. Kind of a bummer that the final two seasons fumbled such a good setup
Ben was there bcuz after meeting the kids reggie picked different kids specifically but since ben was dead and couldn't meet him he didn't know not to pick ben
I didn't really feel let down or weirded out by season 3. Mostly due to the characterization. Somehow, I just felt all the characters were believable enough overall to make a good show. You know, overlook the flaws like empty-feeling sets. Sure, the Sloane/Luther plot felt rushed, but I really felt the writers were using that to express a few themes. Particularly, that the end was nigh, and everything did need to be rushed. Characters were questioning how to spend their last days. Harlan could be accused of being flat and monotonous as a character, but if you look back to the characterization of him in the previous season as a quiet and traumatized child, I honestly think how he was acted here was spot on. I honestly cannot remember any of his lines from season 2, and I'm not sure he spoke in the last episode at all. Allison is in a deep state of loss and refuses to talk to anybody about it whatsoever. All the while having been raised to manipulating the everloving hell out of enemies as a superhero. Previously praised for doing anything to win by a somehow even more manipulative father figure. I struggle to find a character whose motivations are entirely unintelligible or unbelievable, outside of the Sparrow Academy basically being treated as mere plot devices...
Ben can exist because Harlen never met him and then couldn't feel him. So he couldn't feel his mother and kill her. So he could have an alternate version.
But Harlan killed 24/43 of the mothers. It’s mentioned only 19 marigold kids were born this season. Maybe his power had a range limit or something 🤷♀️
I feel like s4 takes the extras problem to an extreme bc the main 8 dont really get interact with anyone besides each other and reginald, so when they go off on their own they arent actually adding anything to their characters (like in s2) or the plot. The entire five and lila thing shows the so much and i really wish the show had actually focused on the apocalypse instead of silly adventures.
season 3 is actually perfect in concept, but in practice it can't be executed to its full potential due to its similar run-time to season 2, which is quite a bit shorter than season 1 with all season 1's episodes being at least 15-20 minutes longer than the average season 2 episode, now if season 3 shared a similar run-time to season 1 then i feel like the'd probably have enough time to establish the characters and the world around them way better
First, I need to rewatch, but I actually like other Ben. Rather than it being a case of it removing stakes because they can just have an alternate the actor makes them so separate I feel it add stakes. Think about it this way; your friend/sibling dies, and now there's someone else walking around with their face and dragging their name through the mud in a way. Original Ben is gone. He went out in a heroic way, and then new Ben's suddenly there and he Hates them for no good reason. Plus new Ben's just a jerk, unlike original Ben by all accounts. Taken seriously the concepts horrifying
I'm so curious to hear your thoughts on season four based on this video. Your thoughts are so well rounded. I've heard so much negativity around season four, but I think there are still some great moments.
I guess to be fair, there is a news broadcast that mentions that missing persons cases have skyrocketed, but it's just one small blip and it's never brought up again, at least as far as I remember. But yeah I completely agree, the whole season just felt disjointed and it was hard to care about the universe ending due to the way it was handled by the writers. It just felt sloppy and rushed, which is a damn shame because I was enjoying the living hell out of seasons 1 and 2. I guess the only consolation is that it looks a hell of a lot better after having watched season 4 lol. Game of Thrones season 8 wasn't a guide on how to write a series finale guys, good lord.
wtf were they doing with the new powers like introduced new powers to use them like one time like Diego gathering bullets and shooting them back like wtf?And Ben is alternative universe Ben but he seems to connect with the childhood main timeline where he made contact with Jennifer oh and the bad guys suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucked and were all killed off before we learned why they knew what they did or I guess Jean and gene could of learned from other universe documents but they just felt wasted .... they didn't really explain the timeliness train like the same moment in different timelines sure but how dow that become a functional system....it felt like umbrella academy was jealous of other superhero shows and movies and just gave up like we took all the V so the dark Phoenix and the TVA from loki exist to unwrite themselves from existence
im confused what ypu mean by "there were no news reports" bc there were news reports about people going missing and authorities trying to understand why or how
I quite liked the villain arc that Allison was having (and she had at the end of S3) but her SA Luther was a big no for me, and the fact that it was never talked about again or she apologized for it made Allison's arc in general not to my liking
only thing is you keep bringing up how to kugelblitz ate up the sparrows but none of them were kugelbitzed except for marcus because he directly touched it, so maybe the marigold in them saves them or something?
No one is really talking about the Allison Luther assault scene.............. That wasn't cool, but in season 4 they never addressed it. AT ALL. This show has a young audience and something of such dark subject matter shouldn't be glossed over. Viktor was upset at Allison, why couldn't Luther be as well? Why didn't we see him at least reconcile with Allison? There wasn't an ounce of pushback for Allison's actions in any of season 4.
HOW DID YOU GUESS THE ENDING WTFFF
i know right he guessed the ending perfectly wtf
it was the only option? hello? was it that hard to predict? genuinly tho season 4 did not potray this ending well
Even I somehow knew the characters have to end themselves at the end.
bro you just spoiled this for me 😭
@rehehehehehehehe yup, same and I only had 1 episode left 🥲
One more thing, I don't think Victor ever saw themselves in Harlan in the sense of being an apocalyptic threat, but rather as the son he never had a chance to raise. From loving his mother to giving him part of his powers, Harlan is the closest thing to a child of his own that Victor ever had so he defends Harlan in the way a father would. It's why his fight with Alison is so intense, its a parental fight.
Even if that's true, I personally didn't feel any parental chemistry between them
@@valhatan3907 I know right, like at all
That's how I saw it too
@@valhatan3907 it would be atypical because timey whimey things leaving harlan significantly older.
That wasn't her fault though. Reginald forced her to do it.

What are your thoughts on the fourth season?
@@arbyswitch5580 Concept wise I think there was some cool ideas such as the subway system being linked to different timelines, and the idea of the two different elements (marigold and the other one) but in the end it was a disappointment. I mean to start,
it had only 6 episodes compared to every other season having 10.
I would’ve really liked them to have brought older Ben back instead of sparrow Ben as I didn’t really warm up to him in season 3 and even when they were trying to make him sympathetic this season, I wasn’t vibing with it.
Another thing is Reginald and that were still stuck with an alternate version, I know Viktor had his closure with him but it doesn’t feel complete as this is an alternate version who never inflicted the trauma on him (although if Viktor grew up under him I’m sure he would have done the same)
The Five and Lila relationship… I mean I always felt the two characters had chemistry but I never felt like it was a romantic one.
Don't forget her SA'ing Luther
Of course Allison would be upset about her daughter rather than her mother. She didn’t know her mom and has no connection to her, she birthed Claire. Her goal has always been Claire
@@niyaakbar1098 my point is that claire was already erased. even if allison had been born, her life would've been completely different. she never would've met her ex.
No the issue with Allison killing Harlan was that Harlan wasn't a threat anymore because Viktor successfully took away his powers.
Yeah it was literally just her being vindictive and taking away Viktor’s son as revenge
i really missed ghost ben
It's so sad watching season 3 and 4 with Ben being such an underdeveloped, unlikeable character compared to what he once was
I thought they'd bring him back in season 4 :(
@@meriewanderer the only character of the main seven they killed off (before the ending) was the one that was already dead 😐

In addition, I believe the reason Ben's mom wasn't killed is because Harlan never felt his specific vibration because he was a ghost the whole time.
Late to this but I believe that because in s2 the main cast met Hargreeves before the adoption he decided not to adopt them (also saying he would never choose people like them?) but because Ben wasn’t with them he adopted him still.
I honestly absolutely LIVE for the first episodes dance sequence, it's so umbrella academy
The highlight of the season.
Pity they didn't have more set pieces like this.
I think only we the audience saw the shockwaves at first. And then it was too late.

I love the idea of s4 for them to be in a world with no powers - but i m scared it wud be lazy low quality writing as well(((
I love those characters i want an epic last season to send them off!
My man, season 3 was a masterpiece compared to season 4.
Exactly.
@@nightmareTomek Everyone missed that part when it was very explicitly shown to us.
I feel like a lot of shows don’t have independent watchers to ask enough questions if the episodes aren’t making sense
Oh well!
@@arbyswitch5580 Damn. The vibes in season 1 & 2 were real tho, I hope there's a show like it in the future

Well, on the other hand, season 4 can be called objectively bad.
@@nightmareTomek I dont have a problem with anything. I just dont like the second half of this show 💀 season 3 episodes 1-3 were boring imo, the random music wasn't well-placed or well explained, the acting seemed to somehow get worse, and the writing was off the rails.
i couldve sworn someone said "whats a Kugelblitz" at some point because this show is the only reason i know what a kugelblitz is
Like I understand why Allison was distraught but I felt like the whole cast just turned into mutes when ever she would start berating them. Like no one would ever bark back, like you think the king of shit talking Five would have a remark, Allison would say something mean, everyone shuts up but when Viktor would try to say something, hes shut down.
Just because they understood Allisons pain.
well I hope that u weren’t too disappointed by season 4, because I know I was. and it looked so good from the trailer too like it’s so sad

SPOILERS FOR SEASON 4
So I didn't rewatch season 3 before season 4, thus all I remembered was that 1: they were stuck in a hotel and there was an apocalypse they had to fight.
You forgot all the important things. xD
I think the setup for season 4 was really more than great, they just didn't capitalize on it.
Weird.
HE MET ALL EXCEPT BEN. THEY HAD DINNER WITH HIM IN S2.
sorry for the all caps lolollll
@@maybeahuman4580 I’m really sorry but are you getting Harlan mixed up with the umbrellas’ dad? I haven’t seen it in a long time but I remember they had dinner with the dad and he hated them and didn’t want them as his kids in that timeline. But Harlan is a different character who only really interacted with Viktor the whole time, and he’s the one who apparently killed the moms. Did they also all have dinner with the random kid Viktor was raising?
OMG the point is even if Harlan didn't kill the mothers, Ben would be the only one from the OG UA cause Reggie was actively avoid the OG UA he met in the 60s cause of hiw disappointed he was with them.
It's literally one of the first lines of the show, idk how a lot of people forgit
@@benjisaac
@@EspeonMistress00 Yeah, I get all of that and literally said it myself. That’s about REGGIE. I’m genuinely trying to figure out wtf these people are talking about with *Harlan* having dinner with them
I was so excited for Alfonso's character because of the actor is a Degrassi TNG alum and was so disappointed when they killed him off without giving him a storyline.
Same here
same!!
Wait hold on, are you saying Alphonso and Craig were played by the same actor?! Now I am even more pissed that they wasted the Sparrows!
Yeah, that’s Craig!
I wish there was like sparrow academy spin off show 😅😢
Just wait till you see season 4. You're gonna love season 3 in comparison.
No way bro predicted they would all die
They did a terrible job with victors powers. He can control it, then he can’t. Then he can, then he can’t. Then he loses them, gets ‘‘em back, can’t control them, then he can. Like pick a lane holy crap. They just chose when he can or can’t control them.
16:15 I mean the kugelblitz didn't exactly attack the other sparrows either? Markus, Fei, and Christopher all directly touched it
Great video but I very recently finished binging the last two seasons so maybe I have a fresher memory than you...
Oh boy, if you think this season was bad, you're gonna have some thoughts about the next one
Well now i think we can all agree that season 3 is WAY better than season 4
Nope
After seeing season 4, season 3 actually seems really enjoyable. And I wasn’t a huge fan of it when I first came out
I wouldn’t say way better
oh lord i feel bad for you, you seemed so excited for season 4:(
Allison has always sucked as a person.
18:07 Its revealed the umbrellas parents were killed before they were born
Despite all the seasons flaws i still LOVE this season. I think the reason season 2 is my favorite season and not 1 is because i usually like seasons or episodes of shows where we already know the characters and we’re seeing them do and react to stuff.
Season 3 was weird, but thankfully S4 was a satisfying ending that answered all of our lingering questions and plots 😭
Season 4 did make Season 3 look a lot better, but not for the right reasons lol
I believe that ben is apart of the sparrows because he is the only one that alien dad didn’t know about when they met in the previous season
16:55-17:02 that is such a concise way to phrase my personal experience watching tte final two seasons of Umbrella Academy. Thank you for putting the thoughts into words 💕
dude, that cube was in the comics
i love tua but this season could have used so much more world building. and while I'm super excited for the fourth and final season, my hopes aren't high. i hope a lot of questions in season four get answered, specifically the jennifier incident
wait till he watches season 4
I agreed completely season 3 definitely had the most missed opportunity in my opinion
Regarding the shot compositions, I would assume these where emulating compositions from a comic book style.
Right in the beginning of the video you mentioned how Covid killed so many TV shows,
so I just have to mention that I believe Covid is mostly responsible for the horrendous finale of supernatural. Covid also ruined my high school experience but I’m almost more mad about it ruining my favorite show-😂
18:37 “The only way this can be redeemed is if the answer to properly stopping the apocalypse is, ‘the Umbrella Academy needs to die’”
And the Monkey’s Paw Curled…
it’s such a shame. those first two seasons were genuinely interesting and felt like they were building to something. Kind of a bummer that the final two seasons fumbled such a good setup
ive been binging your analyses on this series while packing up to move and i love them tysm ❤❤
Totally agree.
I just finishing rewatching season 3 and I distinctly remember Viktor saying something along the lines of "What the hell is a Kugelblitz?"
I'll settle for commentators knowing the difference between a conjecture, a hypothesis, and a theory.
you'll be so disappointed by that last season 😭
It did seem like the stakes were very low in season 3 because of the lack of news reports and screaming civilians
Only time will tell for what the conclusion holds, tomorrow…
So glad it wasn’t just me that thought season 3 was a little weird lol
First, I need to rewatch, but I actually like other Ben. Rather than it being a case of it removing stakes because they can just have an alternate the actor makes them so separate I feel it add stakes. Think about it this way; your friend/sibling dies, and now there's someone else walking around with their face and dragging their name through the mud in a way. Original Ben is gone. He went out in a heroic way, and then new Ben's suddenly there and he Hates them for no good reason. Plus new Ben's just a jerk, unlike original Ben by all accounts. Taken seriously the concepts horrifying
wait til you watch season 4 lol
I need to see your reaction to season 4 omfg
Coming today/ tomorrow!
Thinking about it the ending is really predictable
That callout around 18:30 and 19:00 is fucking wild dude.
I'm so curious to hear your thoughts on season four based on this video. Your thoughts are so well rounded. I've heard so much negativity around season four, but I think there are still some great moments.
Spoiler alert, good news for you, I loved it
@@marshallstannus
That's a relief.
Viktor does ask "what the hell is a kugelblitz".
Game of Thrones season 8 wasn't a guide on how to write a series finale guys, good lord.
wtf were they doing with the new powers like introduced new powers to use them like one time like Diego gathering bullets and shooting them back like wtf?And Ben is alternative universe Ben but he seems to connect with the childhood main timeline where he made contact with Jennifer oh and the bad guys suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucked and were all killed off before we learned why they knew what they did or I guess Jean and gene could of learned from other universe documents but they just felt wasted .... they didn't really explain the timeliness train like the same moment in different timelines sure but how dow that become a functional system....it felt like umbrella academy was jealous of other superhero shows and movies and just gave up like we took all the V so the dark Phoenix and the TVA from loki exist to unwrite themselves from existence
im confused what ypu mean by "there were no news reports" bc there were news reports about people going missing and authorities trying to understand why or how
Oh you sweet summer child....
Season 3 and 4 idk wtf happened.
7.5 is generous
Very excited to see your video on season 4 lol
DUDE YOU CALLED IT
Season 3 forgot about the marigold that clause spit out..
.I think they also forgot about the marigold leftover in the jar but maybe I missed part
This show has the most inconsistent writing I’ve ever seen it’s infuriating
I thought Ben was alive cuz harlen didn’t meet him so didn’t kill his mom n Hargreaves still adopts him
Literally I played poker while my wife watched it ..I couldn't get interested or invested into it
I quite liked the villain arc that Allison was having (and she had at the end of S3) but her SA Luther was a big no for me, and the fact that it was never talked about again or she apologized for it made Allison's arc in general not to my liking
only thing is you keep bringing up how to kugelblitz ate up the sparrows but none of them were kugelbitzed except for marcus because he directly touched it, so maybe the marigold in them saves them or something?
I didn't remember anything about this season.
Admittedly its been a long time.
Season 4 sucks so hard tho
No one is really talking about the Allison Luther assault scene.............. That wasn't cool, but in season 4 they never addressed it. AT ALL. This show has a young audience and something of such dark subject matter shouldn't be glossed over. Viktor was upset at Allison, why couldn't Luther be as well? Why didn't we see him at least reconcile with Allison? There wasn't an ounce of pushback for Allison's actions in any of season 4.
At first I was mad it was only 6 episodes….then I was mad it wasn’t only four 😒
Wait until you watch season 4 lol 😅
