Slight correction, their robot mother gave them their names and 5 rejected his. Some theorize it’s a power play, so that when Reggie calls them by their numbers instead of their names he actually is referring to 5 by name.
You'll notice that Five is not in Paris. My assumption is Mother gave them name shortly before they debuted, since Hargraves didn't care about those things. And Five at that point was already in the future.
Edit: I juts realized you meant the series, not the comic. (-‿-")
I forget, was it ever confirmed that Grace named them in the show as well? Because the explanation that Five disappeared before they were named isn't true in the show, since both Ben and Viktor had their names already. So maybe it's possible that they actually picked out their own names in the show? (TBH it would kinda work with Viktor's transition, since Vanya is apparently a masculine name.)
@@Sploberrie i don't know the specific episode but i am 99% sure diego mentions that mom gave them their names in the show
@@SploberrieVanya is a diminutive for any name with the syllable “van.” Usually Vanya is a nickname for Ivan. Ivana is the feminine version of Ivan (Ivanka is a nickname). The usual nickname for “Viktor” is Vitya. It’s not insane that you would use Vanya for Viktor, I think, it would just be confusing.
Source: I have loved Russian nicknames for decades. They make names longer as they get more affectionate. Vanya > Vanushka/Vanenka > Vanenochka (if you want to get really cutesy).
What was 5s rejected given name?
I love how the comic basically made the “jfk wasn’t shot, his head just did that” meme into what actually happened
I heard a rumor the meme was inspired by the comic.
Gerard Way created the Umbrella Academy: sure, knew that, still a little weird
Gerard Way created Peni Parker: wait, what?
And Moive Penn iu is almost asdiffrent from teh comic one as the UA comics and NF series are.
@@CoyotesOwnYeah, but it seems that in Across the Spiderverse she has had her "Canon event" which gave her a more comic-accurate mech and depression.
I didn't realize anyone created Peni Parker. I thought she appeared like black mold in the Spider-Man canon.
I got into MCR through Danger Days so learning that Gerard Way wrote comics was less of a surprise to me
@@Miles_Phantasmagoria Fun Fact: Way is friends with Grant Morrison, the noted comic writer, and they (Morisson) and they (Morisson is non-binary) played Korse in the Killjoy music videos. UA comic share a similar tone to Morrisons Doom Patrol run.
The major appeal of comics - that you basically have an unlimited special effects budget and that you’re only constrained by your own imagination - is also a major hindrance to live action adaptations. While I like the TV show, I can’t help but wish they instead produced an animated series.
Ooh I would've loved an animated series! But I would prefer a 2D style type
That’s why I feel DC should stick to animation for their movies.
The animated movies are banger after banger but then we get the live action stuff like, Bats v Supes…
The only limit on a comic is the artist's wrists.
I mean yes shows have to work creative within budget. And pick where to put in the amazing action
An animated othe radaption could be amazing i guess, and different enough to be worth it.
That’s the sad part, no one respects animation, even though it has so much more potential than live action
I love how both versions embrace the goofy premise, and simply wear their goofiness on their sleeves. I liked that they incorporated Ben more, through Klaus' mediumship, and even had a character with a goldfish bowl for a head, a nod to the original Handler.
I miss the insanity of the guy with a fish bowl head. Now I have to have "Jennifer will absorb Ben and cause the end of the world" instead.
as a fun fact, Diego simply is spanish (as in, european spanish) in the comics! that said i am rlly glad david castañeda is diego on the show bc he's one of my favorite parts of it
The actor for number 5 was absolutely amazing
Agreed, Aidan Gallagher was fantastic as Number Five, and I honestly believed that this teenager was a middle aged man trapped in a teenage body, and got to treat his cast mates like annoying children.
Indeed, he was my favourite thing in the whole series. Absurdly well acted.
He is one of the best performers at 15 in a show that has an academy award nominated actor in it.
He was the reason I watched it at first.
I hadn't read the comic.
I only knew him from Nickelodeon on Nicky, Ricky, Dicky, and Dawn.
I don't remember which he was, but even then I knew he was batting way above any other actor on the show, even some of the adults.
So when I saw a potentially serious show with him, I decided to check it out.
I'm glad I did.
@@davidcopperfield5345 He was Nicky
If I recall correctly, Elliot Page did offer to keep playing his character as the cisgender Vanya, but the crew wanted to accommodate him… probably concerned about the effect on his mental health that not addressing his dysphoria could have. I really respect that, too.
Really? That's so great from all of them involved, Elliot for being so committed and the crew for being kind and understanding
Yea wow that’s great to hear!
I really love that, it’s really considerate and even being 100% comfortable in one moment doesn’t guarantee it forever. i’m glad they took the opportunity to show a good way for the family to handle it and to respect elliot.
imagine enabling mental illness 😂
reminds me of how Laverne Cox in Orange is the New Black was willing to play her character's pre-transition self, but the crew was concerned about the potential negative mental health effects of doing that so they got her twin brother to do it instead!
"Takes place in a fundamentally different universe" seems like a pretty significant adaptational difference. Like writing a fanfic that's a coffeeshop AU.
Bad analogy. You can write a Batman coffeeshop AU that still takes place in Gotham City. You can also write a conventional Batman story that takes place in Camelot, the cyberpunk future, Victorian England, the flooded future, or even a world of talking animals. I know this because all of those are real AU Batmen from official DC comics (Earth-9, Earth 12, Earth-19, Earth-31, and Earth C-, respectively).
Any setting with crime and rich people who can occasionally be murdered by criminals can have a Batman, and a Joker, and a Riddler, and a Two-Face. Settings inform stories, but many stories can be transplanted into very different settings, so long as a few elements are kept in common.
@timothymclean Yeah but if you adapted any random Batman story and set it on Earth C- for Batmouse, from the Just'a Lotta Animals, that's a pretty significant difference because he's also an in-universe comic book character over on Earth C. Depending on when in the various DC timelines it's set, that could create a canonical interdimensional lawsuit within the narrative (I'm not kidding about that, it's a plot point in the revival plus it's funny AF IMHO.) Bare minimum you're gonna want Captain Carrot as a cameo because it would feel rude to exclude him. I'd hope these differences were significant.
"Because I really didn't like it." Agreed on season 4. Tone, ending theme, and lack of resolution all bothered me. 5 joining the CIA makes perfect sense and doesn't feel wrong, though. That was one good choice.
Also, his actor could have made for a phenomenal Artemis Fowl if there had been an opportunity and worthwhile production for the role.
Perhaps Moriarty in the next Sherlock Holmes adaptation?
We don't speak of the disaster Disney put out.
Even from just an episode to episode storytelling perspective its incredibly bad. Most of the siblings get nothing to do (Luther and Diego for example spend multiple episodes in a CIA basement waiting for the ending to happen, Klaus exits the plot the second he is given the marigold and only comes back in the end, etc). And lets not to talk about how mean spirited the season is with some characters like, again, Diego, who is repeatedly called a fat useless moron for no reason. Then he gets a shirtless scene where he is all jacked, like did they forget they were calling him fat for multiple episodes?
I liked the season4 but I ABSOLUTELY AGREE on the Artemis Fowl point. What a disaster! Disney ruined one of my childhood book series and the actor of Five just looks exactly how I'd picture Fowl.
@@asilnorahc8910Omg yes
5:42 By the way, «Vanya» is a male name, so they could keep him being Vanya, but probably they wanted to emphasize that it was a new part of life or so
Exactly I know actual trans people with non gendered names or nicknames that change their name still, I guess it makes it harder for people to forget you’re transitioning so people will use their new pronouns
It's actually my grandfather's name lol
@@Ty-wy7yq Vanya isn't non-gendered tho. It's male-gendered in the first place. It started as a nickname for Ivan.
Honestly, I don't think they knew it's a male name. For anyone not familiar with slavic languages, names ending with 'a' usually read feminine. Plus, they likely didn't learn much Chekov either. XD
@@Painocus In Bulgaria, Vanya is a feminine name.
another fun fact about Gerard's comic credits: he also did a very popular stint on DC's Doom Patrol, parts of which inspired and were adapted into the Doom Patrol TV show which premiered THE SAME WEEK as the Umbrella Academy season 1.
A really good show too. I have got to continue Doom Patrol
Love that show. Still waiting for the DVD of Series 4 to come out in the UK.
Wild how doom patrol actually had a decent ending in comparison to this 😗 4 seasons, and ended last year
Gerard way is also the only writer Grant Morrison allow to use crazy jane in doom patrol
I think I might have seen someone posting about this on Tumblr at the time.
I would love if Netflix Pulled a Scott Pilgrim again and decided they're going to redo the entire series but animated and more loyal to the comics with the original voice cast somewhat still involved
-redo the entire series but animated
-loyal to the comic
You sure you mean _Scott Pilgrim_ ?
@@BlackCover95 the Scott Pilgrim show while not exactly like the comics still feels like a closer adaptation in style. If they decided to do this animated they could still have range to add new things but the point of my comment was that much like how the Scott Pilgrim show is a closer adaptation to the comic an animated Umbrella Academy could follow a similar flow.
I hope that actor for Five gets more projects, absolutely brilliant, i forget he's not a 50+ old man most of the time.
The most shocking thing I heard today was that the Umbrella Academy, a tv series I barely cared about, was based on a comic book that was legitimately written by the frontman of one of my favorite bands ever and that he also helped develop and create one of my favorite Spider-characters.
probably hit you like the Spaceboy hit the Eiffel TOwer during its rampage
TUA was so great... until the last season.
He also writes for the comic revival of the Doom Patrol and Cave Carson!
he was interning for cartoon network when 9/11 happened. he had always wanted to do comics and then he just kinda made a hard left turn into music for a bit when the comics weren't going well for him and he was dealing with the aftermath of witnessing a terrible thing. then he became a famous singer-songwriter because of his remarkable ability to plumb the depths of human suffering and delusion and suddenly he was getting invites from comic book houses left and right. it's a (small) part of why mcr ended - this was always where he wanted to be and where his passion was
it was pretty moving when they picked The End by MCR for the trailer of the last season
WTF. That clip of Luthor going "I like the hair" that got a emotional reaction out of me.
Totally, Luther gets a bad reputation, but he really cares for his siblings, and I loved his interactions with Viktor towards the end.
The scene in season 2 where he apologizes to Victor in the barn is one of my favourite scenes in anything I’ve ever seen.
Luther is a really sweet character that is obviously a bit of an afterthought for the writers, which is good because they don't get to ruin him in later seasons. He really loves Viktor and genuinely regrets being shitty to him, which makes their interactions really sweet. Also Tom Hopper is a delight, super underrated performance.
@Di7manya yesss, tom hopper is an amazing actor! he's very good at gentle giant characters, or maybe thats just because I've been a fan since he played Percival in the Merlin tv show haha
@@j_fenrir He also has some pretty good comedic timing and a lot of the comedy involving him works because he really commits to it.
i honestly loved how they moved Vanya to Victor, no big scene no big TAM TAM just a "i am that" and everyone was like "ok then".
thats honestly how i rly wish it always goes in real life, its no big deal guys
To be fair, it is an adjustment for everyone else. As my uncle said to my cousin, when they went through their gender identity... change? Affirmation? Whatever the correct term is.
He said that he has known his child as a particular gender and name for their whole life up to that point. He can't just flip that on a dime. It took some adjustment, even now, a couple of years later, he still occasionally refers to my cousin by their old name before he catches himself.
@@benjamindrayton1380 People readily accept bigger changes all the time with little issue. People are weird about tiny things and grasp for justifications for poor adaptation. I've seen this too often for too long and all for the same mentality type. It's not even close to universal.
@@VelaiciaCreator The older you get, the more you want things to stay the same. It's hard for older generations to adjust to the changes, and things have been changing faster and faster. Even I as a 30 year old am finding it hard to change when it comes to cars or phones.
The fact that the other person's uncle was even supportive to the change at all is a bigger feat than any for anyone above 50. That in of itself should be a massive win for the cousin, because their father is supportive of the change.
@@BrokensoulRider I know MANY members of the older gens who have zero issue adapting. They outnumber those who have trouble. The problem is those who claim to have trouble are overly vocal about it.
@@VelaiciaCreator How many do you know compared to the rest of the 68% that are over 60? Most people don't like change. And a change this dramatic does mess with people. I know about 5 transgenders and they're good with the fact that I occasionally confuse them. It gets easier over time, but the initial is hard. Mind you, I have other issues that make it harder for me to accept change, period.
Supernatural bureaucracy is a long (very long) running theme in east asian stories, so that's probably where it came from originally.
At least journey to the west. Heavenly court and its shinanigans, right?

A small difference not mentioned is that Hazel and Cha-Cha switched names between comic and TV series. In the comic Cha-Cha is the one in the blue mask and Hazel is the one in the pink mask.
Also, there's a spin-off mini-series comic dedicated specifically to Klaus that is absolutely unhinged. It takes place before the events of the first comic, and it shows Klaus going from heavy drinking (which was what he originally did to deal with his super powers) to hard drugs. The main antagonist is a vampire monkey mafia don.
Diego’s power wasn’t throwing knives, it’s the ability to change the trajectory of projectiles mid air. He uses knives because they move slow enough that he can accurately control where they hit, and he doesn’t need a dedicated launching system (bow, crossbow, etc.)
Just on my way down here to see if anyone pointed out Diego's ability is super accuracy 😂
Bullseye but even more hacks
Isn't that's what he said in the video?
@@Painocus I thought so 😅
@@Dominic-Noble you mentioned later that he's got the ability to manipulate things in the air but originally it sounded like you weren't sure what he was supposed to do besides throw knives.
The TVA was created in the 80s, but I think the specific 70s aesthetic was more of an MCU invention
Gerard way’s career is so fascinating. Like he was so close to be an early cartoonist for adult swim before aqua teen hunger force and 9/11 happened inspiring him to pursue music instead.
My main like for the show was that Five is essentially the main character and Aidan Gallagher killed it in the role. Five is my favorite part of the comics, and tiny, angry men are my favorite character trope, so most of the show was great imho. 😂
I always like it when there is a Graphic Novel lost in adaptation episode
He did Scott Pilgrim too, does that count?
@legzfalloffgirl5148 Yes. Along with Watchman and the League of Extraodanery Gentlemen
He doesn't throw knives. It is shown multiple times, that he has telekinetic powers that guide stuff to whereever he intends them to go. The most recent season has him throwing packages and they do a Wanted on their respective ways into the yards and postboxes. He definitely has powers.
I guess they just didn’t explain it very well (or I’ve forgotten it’s been awhile since I watched it) but I always thought his power was mastery of weapons
He mentions that about 14 minutes in, he just explains it in more simple terms at the beginning
@@voidaspects9173 then I forgot, it’s been a longggg time since I’ve seen the show :)
@Ty-wy7yq oh sorry, I meant "he" as in Dom, not the character himself. Like, in the beginning of the video he introduces it in simple terms but mentions the logistics halfway through :P
@@voidaspects9173 ohhhhhh, sorry it's been a long day hahaha. Have a good day though!
Now that you've done this... my biggest request ever is Sweet Tooth. The first season of that is probably my favorite single story told in episodes presented on screen. Please please please please do Sweet Tooth.
Love your work. You're my favorite channel on youtube, man.
One thing that I always found strange from the comics was that both Allison and Luther, and Diego and Vanya were in romantic relationships. The Westermarck Effect denotes not being attracted towards people whom you grew up with as siblings before the age of six, and while the showrunners tried to point out that they were raised in a boarding school environment, the siblings all addressed themselves as such. At least Diego and Viktor never showed any romantic inclinations.
Glad the show mostly dropped that, because it's definitely icky.
yeah that was a weird plot point, maybe something to do with hargreaves potentially keeping them WAY too isolated from the world for too long a time? or perhaps gerard way jsut didn't think about that and jsut wanted to have some more drama in the story.
@@alanpennie8013 "mostly dropped that" they literally had Allison borderline rape Luther...Mostly dropped that? I'd take 2 completely unrelated people who grow up with each other dating over that but without consent.
It really doesn't bother me that much. I'm a youth worker and you see these kinds of relationships form all the time
While yes, kids raised together under normal circumstances are incapable of forming romantic attachments to each other, trauma and isolation reaaaaaally messes with that instinct. Under normal circumstances kids explore romance and sex with people outside their family group, but if you don't have any contact with outsiders those feelings don't just not happen, it's a pretty standard part of teen development unless you're ace and/or aro. So instead of fancying the cutie in chem class they end up fancying one of the few people they *do* have access to. In*est is suuuuuper common in isolated or closed off families who have little contact with outsiders, particularly those that don't educate or socialise their teenagers outside the family. Hence the Duggars boy abusing his sisters
Been a fan of the comics since a kid, like I think the comic was not really able to translate easily to tv, and loved the first two seasons, they somehow felt like loyal adaptations still, but the last 2 seasons felt off.
Fun fact he’s now the curator for Doom Patrol which is the most obvious inspiration for Umbrella Academy and his brother is a comic writer as well now too he did Electric Century.
Not live action, if they did an anime reboot it could i guess.
@@marocat4749 I’d love a cartoon adaptation.
In Gerald Way's defense, his comic inspiration was Grant Morrison.
When your inspiration is the writer who wrote New X-Men, JLA, The Invisibles, and Doom Patrol, you have good taste.
>Gerald Way
Given his ability to hold his breath unnaturally long and his skill in altering the trajectory of his knife throws, it could be implied he is using a low level of Aerokinesis, subconsciously creating wind tunnels to direct the aim of his knives.

Ok new about umbrella being written by him but HOW DID I NOT KNOW HE MADE PENNY PARKER
Honestly I thought season 3 was the big shark-jump of this show, what with all the potential of the sparrow academy being wasted as they all get killed off quickly, with an embarrassingly bad representation of a disabled character, with making Allison into an irredeemably evil person but still treating her as the good main character who gets a wish fulfillment totally unearned ending, AND with doubling down on Luther doing bizarre pseudo incest shit. Weird that it took until season 4 for critical reception to become super negative
quite a shame, as the sparrow academy were the big cliffhanger of volume 3 of the comic with it being almost certain they'll play a larger role in a VOlume 4 if we ever get it
@@sarafontanini7051rumors say it might be out in the later half of 2025
Mostly because coming from season 2 (hands down the best season) I think the drop off in quality gets excused a bit more easily (sunk cost fallacy and all that). Season 4 comes off the back of a shaky season and is notably worse than most of the worst parts of season 3. Like half of the siblings spends multiple episodes of season 4 just waiting for the ending to start.
I don't understand what you mean with Luther doing pseudo incest shit in season 3. Other than Allison SAing him, there's nothing else that could be seen in that way.
@@Di7manya His terrible "romance" with Sloane. It is a bit of a stretch but it's super questionable that for the first 2 seasons he was obsessed with dating Allison, then in the third season he has a love interest who's kind of his alternate-universe sister, and who has zero personality or characterization outside of dating him. Just gross and bad writing. You are absolutely right that season 2 was by far the best tho.
@@noviatoria2436 I think by the midpoint of season 2, Luther is already over Allison. So him moving on in season 3 makes perfect sense to me.
I get not liking the romance with Sloane (the show really doesn't care about developing Luther too much so his subplots are treated accordingly) but imo there are no incest adjacent vibes in that relationship. Not only are they not blood related, the Umbrellas and the Sparrows don't see each other as siblings at all, and critically they weren't raised together which is what made his romance with Allison weird. Sloane is as removed from Luther as Lila is from Diego.
So glad it got a 3 season run, perfect at 3 seasons….just 3 seasons.
Yep 3 seasons and no more 😂
Exactly! It ended on a bit of a cliffhanger but who cares? Better than having a terrible final season. Glad that didn't happen.
Im going out of my mind, do people think S3 is good now? When it came out it seemed i was with the consensus, but now its a hot take????
@@selahanany5645 I liked S3, never read the reviews or engaged with the fandom so had no idea people didn't like it. It had issues but the weak points weren't part of what I came for the show for.
@@selahanany5645 It was good. People had problems with it. Some were unearned. Some were reasonable. New series came out, which was unlike the level that people wanted so they reevaluated Series 3. I'm still so salty how they fumbled the bag so hard in the final season when the bag was dancing on the grave of the comics for seasons 1-3.
An absolutely brilliant soundtrack.
Except for Baby Shark.
But even that made me smile.
I absolutely LOVED when they were whining in the car like a bunch of babies but Daddy Diego wouldn't stop because they were "making good time. "😂
The Baby shark bit would have been funny if they did it once, but they just kept doing it over and over to the point it was obnoxious.

Quick note: Peni does have a brief appearance in the second film, Across the Spider-Verse, and has a much more comic accurate mech suit.
Remember Gerald Way wanted to become a cartoonist and worked at Cartoon Network until 9/11 made him reconsider it.
Also while I'm a big fan of weird and wacky comic book worlds I guess it was for the best that they toned it down in the show.
I however lament the fact that most people will never get to see the umbrella academy fight the eiffel tower or see Klaus and Spaceboy fight vietcong vampires.
At least they kept the fish even if they MASSIVELY downplayed his role in the adaptation

@@sarafontanini7051 Maybe one day, if they rebooted it into a cartoon, it would actually one worth it?!
@@marocat4749honestly I think a movie for each volume would be a better choice. They’d have a bigger budget to do the crazy stuff from the comics
@@sarafontanini7051 Yeah, AJ Carmichael's role in the show felt rather lacking honestly, It was never explained why or how there's a talking goldfish, And he hardly did anything, Really felt more like a little nod to fans of the comics than an actual integral part of the story.
what I find really cool is each volume of the comics actually ahs a single scene used to set up the enxt adventure
volume 1 has a scene where Number 5 fights a HORDE of goons sent from the time commission to capture him. However, we are never told WHO these people are or WHY they tried to kill him until VOlume 2. SImilarily VOlume 2 has a scene featuring a vaguely villainious businessman who had NOTHING to do with the story of volume 2 and said scene featured NOONE involved in volume 2's plot, so we wouldn't find out what his deal was until VOlume 3 finally came out to reveal he was one of the main villains of that volume.
also random asides:
I actually like how one dimensional and vile Hazel and Chacha are. Funnily enough while they're kileld halfway through the volume they're pretty much the main villains of the comic with the time comission being a greater villain of the plot, blowing up the entire planet just cause they felt like it. WHile they're more developed and somewhat symapthetic (well one more than the other) in the tv show, in the comic they're absolutely deranged and terrifying (they also NEVER remove their masks unlike the show)
I do find it a shame the show pretty much fumbles the bizarreness of the comics and drops a lot of what made the comics so fun. THey were darekly satirical, a play on superhero comics played to bizarre extremes. I mean while it would've been a budget nightmare you can't tell me you WOULDN'T want to see the fight with ZOmbie RObot Gustave Eiffel played in Live Action.
i feel The Horror's power is more able to partially summon many different monsters through his body, not jsut tentacles, he's jsut not alive long enough for us to see that.
I quite like the twist that Diego's pwoers were so situational and banal. It's clear they're a reason why his adobtive dad didn't treat him very well and plays a large part in not only why he's SO antagonistic towards his family but also why he continues to distinguish himself as basically his world's batman to show up the old man, as well as shows that he's a badass DESPITE his powers not because of them.
Yeah, he does monsters, I think the Netflix people forgot that quickly.
One of the changes between the comic and the TV show that didn't make it into your video since it's rather irrelevant to the plot but which I find very interesting is that in the comics, Luther and Five are twins! I always liked that little detail
Umbrella Academy in comics were superheroes in a weird world, Umbrella Academy in live action are a weird collection of characters with no superheroes abilities or agency.
I *did* know who wrote these comics, but that doesn't mean playing Welcome to the Black Parade in the background didn't force me to pause your vid for half an hour while I binged my old high school ipod touch playlist...
oh, something that would be an 'in name only' - Altered Carbon.
It's amazing how the show made the dumbest unnecessary changes that literally undercut the story. It was almost brilliant too.
My husband and I were really turned off of the series after season 3. What they did with Allison made absolutely zero sense to us so we’ve been hesitant to return for the final season. I really enjoyed the first two seasons so I may just have to pretend it ended there to keep my fond memories lol
you can try the comics and see if they did her better there (she does do some morally questionable shit but it has repurcussions and she's not portrayed as in the right for it, nor is she portrayed as even enjoying what she did)
@@sarafontanini7051 I might have to! I didn't know much about the comic before but after learning more and seeing parts in the video, I'm much more interested
Her killing Harlan was such a big deal for me. Sigh.
oh. I didn't know Gerard Way was a singer. Good for him.
1:05
I spent a good minute doing a Tennant-style "what?" over and over again
But that is amazing
Did you know that Gerald Way & podcaster Joe Rogan are first cousins once removed even though they never met.
I have only watched the show, and I have complicated feelings about it.
There are some parts that I absolutely love. From the charming sidestory about how Hazel discovers true love and goes AWOL to the amazing performance of Aidan Gallagher. I really like the setup which starts with a basic getting the band back together to save the world, and ends where there traumatic backstory eventually causes them to fail epically, and the world isn't saved. Although that is a bit of shaggy dog story, a frustrating futile tragedy, which makes it a hard watch. But in a good way. I enjoy the forlorn depression and feeling left out of Vanya as portrayed by Elliot Page. I like the funnier depression and desperate escapism of Klaus (great acting by Sheehan) as well as where the story takes him and his character development later on.
But there are other parts of the story that grates on me. I don't like how often people dramatically fails at basic communication, just so the plot can happen. I don't understand why they so often are total dicks to each other, needlessly, as it seems to me. Yeah, I get that they're all royally effed up by their abusive father, but there should have been at least some traumatic bonding - victims together tend to get really soppy with each other. And generally, if protagonists are unlikeable, but not full on villain protagonists, it becomes harder to care about them. The friction between Umbrellas and Sparrows is a prime example. Their fights feel forced, and I don't care about the outcome anyway.
The worst offender is Allison who is portrayed as both a moral monster, and also as an entitled immature self pitying Karen: I want her to eat scat and die. But the show very often seems to be written as if I'd empathise and feel pity for her, as if I'd be on her side... That doesn't work, she starts out annoying and unsympathetic, and then she crosses the moral event horizon. I want the others to realize that she is the worst super villain and team up to kill her, that's what I want. When they get soppy and forgiving and try to rehabilitate her, I get annoyed with them too.
Anyway. It's an interesting watch.
Cheers
i do suggest giving the comics a try. WHile the characters aren't monsters, they are complex, often dark and VERY fucked up. Allison is actually pretty interesting as its left ambiguous if she has used her powers on her loved ones or not, though she's consistently portrayed as being willing to do some bad shit if it means saving the life of Klaus, who's pretty much the sole member of the family she has any decent rapport with.
Though the fact the comics are fucking weird may be a turn off.
One of the worst things about Seasons 3 and 4 imo, is that the siblings keep being extremely shitty to each other, despite having spent 2 full seasons reconnecting. Like after the end of season 2, they should really be nicer to each other and trust each other's capabilities more. But the writers seem to think that what worked in the first 2 seasons was the funny banter and bickering, and not the genuine character drama and development. The show feels like a parody of itself having them be so shitty to each other, like you say for no reason. The disfunction starts to feel forced after a while, especially since we've seen them come together multiple times.
The show has clear favorites regarding what characters get to be assholes (Five, Allison and Lila) and which don't. Diego is repeatedly called out in season 4 by Lila (& others) for not appreciating his soul-sucking job and married life enough, but Lila who ALSO HATES IT isn't! Lila gets to sneak around and be a spy or something, but Diego is an asshole for wanting that very thing, despite him being set up from season 1 episode 1 as the only one that could never leave the superhero life. Also Five deliberately is preventing Diego from joining the CIA for no reason other than to be mean to him. Diego and Luther spend like 2 full episodes of season 4 waiting in a CIA basement for the last episode to start, just because Five felt like being a dick to them.
The reason they often are dicks to each other is because Reginald had them competing constantly, that's why Diego has such difficulty agreeing with Luthor because he was number 2 (in the comics it's even more prominent with Luther being the "golden child" and Diego having weaker powers than his siblings, which force him to work harder I think).
I'll say in terms of relationships, I do like how the comics explore their flaws, why they don't consider each other family for real (because they were never treated as such by the Monocle) and so on. Allison is such an example, in the show she starts season 1 being largely a good person who is over using her rumor to benefit herself but in the comic she still struggles with this and we can see how her actions impact the people around her and how they view her.
It's not perfect, I also agree the show (at least season 1) did a pretty good job with making the characters feel more grounded and the conflicts be more interconnected. But the character development is an issue because it often feels like the Academy are acting a certain way (being combative with Five, not talking to each other or generally retracing their development) just to make sure we get 10 episodes.
It’s too bad the show only had three seasons but at least they didn’t get a chance to mess things up with a fourth season.
Ah yes... I sometimes remember that Jerard Way wrote this, and then i forget until someone else brings it up
When I was a teenager my mother absolutely HATED MCR saying they were "too dark... that's just too dark."
She went on and on about this awesome show I would totally be into called The Umbrella Academy.
"Soooooo mom... guess who created that show?"😂
@@legzfalloffgirl5148 oh, that's a shame 😂 did your mother changed her opinion on them after finding this out?
@@sava-smthnope ☺️
GERARD WAY? AS IN THAT GERARD WAY? what?!
My favorite thing about the JFK assassination in the comics is that, the reason they had to kill him was because, if he had lived, Hazel and ChaCha would’ve gotten ahold of some nukes and decide to blow up the world on a whim. The absolute silliness of it all is so fun.
Meta-humans are generally mutants, so I think they're already pretty accepting of some extreme differences, so I don't think that quite tracks. It's been my experience that people who are "different" tend to be more empathetic with those who share their experiences.
Eg autistic people generally being more understanding of gay and trans people. Which is why we're sadly now seeing reactionary backlash, trying to say autistic people can't understand what it means to be gay or trans and thus should be banned from transitioning.
i found the show as a whole so frustrating - it's one of those strange ilk thats greatest strength is a great main cast i just want to watch hang out and it does everything in its power to stop them from doing that
The clips of pre-transitioned Victor being referred to by he/him pronouns makes me so warm and happy, gives me hope for myself and my journey
I send love and support from a total stranger in the hopes that your journey will be smooth and easy.
8:10 "the mickey mouse clubhouse theme" was sung by " they might be giants"
Great timing, just finished the last season. Thanks Dom!
Yeah, Gerard originally wanted to be a cartoonist for Cartoon Network, even had a meeting. The day of the meeting was 9:11 when he saw the tower's drop. He was like. Hey, I should start a band instead.
Here so early I haven't even gotten the notification for the video yet 😂
One thing I really like about the show version of Klaus was the way they drew parallels to the character Robert Sheehan played on Misfits. Klaus scrambling across the floor of a club after a pill felt like an homage to the scene in Misfits when Nate takes LSD at the club and can suddenly see his dead brother. Plus, the season 3 reveal that Klaus is immortal, combined with the season 4 plot of him being buried alive, is resonant with Nate’s power on Misfits, plus how he discovered his ability.
I read volume 1 of the comic a few years before the show came out and I really didn't like it, but I ended up loving (the first two seasons of) the show so much!! So in my case I'm glad they made the changes they did because the end result was something that worked so much better for me, and I can definitely echo your conclusion that liking one version of the story doesn't necessarily mean you'll like the other
I didn't get the chance to talk to anybody about season 4 so I am glad I wasn't the only disappointed one,
I binged it over a few days and just went along for the ride. The actors imbued their characters so well I didn’t really question anything until Klaus was forced a Marigold. His diving into degeneracy while acting like he had no choice really took me out. He didn’t even try…🤷♀️
For the algorithm bump. Love the review
My husband and I went from really enjoying the first few episodes of Season 1 to hate watching the rest of the season and not watching any of the rest. What really turned us off was the inconsistency of the characters believing in "weird stuff". Like they have a scene with 5 telling them the world is going to be destroyed and they are all like "Ok - we gotta fix this". _Literally_ the next scene was Klaus going "I see dead people and I've been talking with Ben" and ALL of them responded with "That's crazy". REALLY? Your _other brother_ just came back from the future with a 50 yr olds mind in a 13yr olds body, told you the world was going to be destroyed and you accept that at face value (along with your oldest surviving family being a talking chimp, one of you having a gorilla body, and the fact you KNOW all of you have some sort of powers) yet the idea that Klaus can see dead people is "unbelievable".
Family dysfunction is one thing but stupidity is another. Like _believing_ Klaus but not trusting he'll have it together enough to help with the mission, or some other interpersonal conflict makes sense given the family dysfunction. Just NOT believing him makes NO sense.
It kinda does. He’s either high 24/7, or utterly wasted. Witnessing weird shit go down doesn’t mean someone should automatically believe what they’re high as a kite brother is telling them. He’s not exactly the most stable person in the series.
@@Yeibaldreamss Except they don't ask why they should believe him, or accuse him of being high, they all _specifically_ say "That's impossible". No, it's demonstrably NOT impossible.
the show is serious and unserious at the same time. i guess thats part of its "humor" thats kind of its thing but i assure you, s2 will be so worth it! its peak. but umbrella academy is probably not your cup of tea since that part still occurs throughout the show. He's taken the least seriously. but overall, its fun, quirky, surprisingly deep. just dont watch season 4. 3 is fine.
@@DaleyKreations They told him to use his powers to talk to their dead dad, then, Klaus himself stated several dozens of times that he was incapable doing so. I can imagine the utter disbelief the siblings felt when they found out their wasted brother could’ve been useful this entire time, uttering the exact words Klaus had said to them (Again, several dozen times) “that’s impossible.”
So, not gonna lie... As someone who only ever knew the name of this series, I always just assumed it was a Resident Evil spinoff 😅
you fool
but also check out the comics if you like some WEIRD shit
YEEEEESSSSSS
MY TWO FAVS TOGETHER!!
Missing from this is the fact that Diego is in love with Vanya and they were in a band at some point. Also, it's implied Allison used her powers on Luther as well and that's why he's in love with her
Most people don't realize that Gerard Way was heading to Cartoon Network HQ for an internship on the morning of September 11th, 2001.
I loved season 1 when it was about working through the emotional family trauma of their childhood and the rules of time travel were paid attention to. I was fed up with season 2 already bc it throws out both of those concepts, not continuing the story, and blatantly ignoring the rules it had established. (You can't make a bunch of big changes to the past willy-nilly and expect to jump back to YOUR version of the future/present)
That is explained in Season 4. Which is brilliant. Though not if you demand happy endings.
You too are a beautiful creator Dom! One of My favorites! Thanks For this 🎉🎉🎉🎉
this will be an interesting one for me. I love the show and I love the comic, but recognize they are VERY different stories
It's such a shame when a show you like has a bad ending because it makes you question if the rest of it was any good in the first place. My feelings about TUA are a bit tangled right now, but overall I think I do prefer the changes it made to the comics, if only because the slightly more grounded tone is more my thing (and Viktor's White Violin design is so much more visually interesting than White Naked Woman)
the fact that they're all so immediately accepting of viktor coming out is kind of a no brainer not just because trans rights but also because like they've literally been constantly living through apocalypses for like weeks imagine if they were like no i can handle the end of the world but i really can't handle you actually being a guy. like that would just be insane
Been waiting for series of unfortunate events season 3 review for so long
Dominic is wearing tighter shirts now that he's ultrabuff, I see.
They are normal shirts, he's just Cavilling up.
Damn, the ability to manipulate objects in flight is actually really cool and unique!
I do think one of the weirdest aspects of the comics is that Diego is in love with vanya.
Thanks for this! I love the first two comics (haven’t gotten around to the third). I dipped out of the TV show after The Conductor wasn’t, well, The Conductor. I might give season 1 a second shot. I do think the casting was really well done, especially Klaus. I liked how they handled his character in what I saw of the show, even the drugs and Ben following him around. (If you can’t tell, Klaus was my favorite in the comics lmao).
The comics have little MCR references, especially in the chapter titles. “But the Past Ain’t Through with You”, “We Only See Each Other at Weddings and Funerals”, etc. You can definitely tell Gerard was working on this while doing The Black Parade. I think that also might be why he wrote Klaus to be over the drugs/booze, since he was getting sober then iirc
Rip The Umbrella Academy 🫡
Welcome back Dom! Just like the Hero You are You always come back in time❤❤❤❤
I knew Gerard worked on comic books after the band split, but assumed that he had a relatively underground career, being wealthy enough to do whatever he wanted.
This a welcomed revelation.
A great way to start off my weekend once off from work. Have a good one on your end, Dom.
The first season of The Umbrella Academy was such a gread tv show. Everything that came after that got worse ond worse over time. S4 was devastatingly terrible q.q
I thought season 2 was better. I honestly don’t get why people dislike S3 so much, but S4 was utterly atrocious. What a disgusting way to be erased out of existence…
I watched a whole Scooby Doo this morning where Not really Sherlock Holmes kept shouting Science and now I've got Dom doing it.
Omg yes! I've been waiting for this!
I'm relieved i didnt go further than season 2.
How much money would it cost you to make a special episode about the difference between the live action and anime versions of One Piece?
Today's episode of LiT, The Umbreller Academy
Fun fact: in Life on the Murder Scene, a sort of documentary/video diary of the early days of MCR's career and the development of their second album, there's a spot, I don't remember the actual time code, where we see Gerard developing the early ideas for The Umbrella Academy.
"THE CIT-EHHH" I'm screaming
they didn't even add the time traveling elevator. smh.
The biggest difference between the books and the show is that the books were. You know. Good.
I don’t think adaptations have to be true to the original if they are able to make their own original take and do so genuinely. I think that’s why the first two seasons were so good.
