regular eating teaspoons don't necessarily hold 5ml! especially for liquids because you can't heap them like powders. so the spoon for the first kit may be more accurate than your actual teaspoon
I waighed mine coz of Dietary restrictions and mine hold 3ml
Not sure if its the same where you are but usually here in Australia teaspoons you use for eating are NOT the standard size of a measuring spoon "teaspoon". Water is a 1:1 weight to volume ratio though so if you ever want to check if the amount of water youre putting in is accurate you can always weight out 5 grams because that will always equal 5ml.
In most post British counties (like in your case Australia) and countries that also use the "US cup system", you frequently use cups, teaspoons and table spoons for measurement in the kitchen and these units have standardised size.
But traditionally in Europe, we use metric, so grams, decagrams, and kilograms (Maqaroon lives in Germany, IIRC) for us. And if a spoon is used in a recipe, it refers to the actual eating utensil.
So to us, Europeans, the spoon is the actual spoon used for eating, white to you the spoon refers to the standardised unit.
Ofc this can be super confusing, especially if you don't know which unit system the person writing the recipe is using. I can't tell you how much I have when I have to google stuff like "How much is a tablespoon of flour in grams?", because I don't own standardized spoon lol
If you wanted to try making your own glossy silicone molds, I might have a method for you!
I use UV resin frequently, and it naturally cures glossy unless it's in a mold with a different texture. So you could make the original and put a thin glaze of resin over the top of it to make it glossy before pressing it into silicone.
For a non-resin version, coating your cured clay pieces in a smooth layer of glossy top coat nail polish might have the same effect!
Yes that's a very interesting idea! I always make my squishy models from polymer clay so they could potentially be shiny if the surface is smooth enough.
In my experience, silicone do not cure correctly around UV resin, I have tried this for makeing my own molds. After a few failed attempts I tried with epoxy resin instead and that works so my tip is to use epoxy resin to get the glossy finish and not UV. 😊

I think it's insane that you guys have to pay a fine for setting off the fire alarm. I've set mine off a handful of times and I always feel bad for my neighbors but at least the FD isn't called automatically. So are people just super cautious about not setting it off? What if you burn your food?
I believe the fine is from when the fire dept actually makes the trip. Because of the emergency call, it’s tying up a resource that could potentially be used elsewhere for a true emergency.

I think the problem might be the glitter in the fishing lures? It's metallic so maybe it's actually made of aluminium or something. I feel like that might be the problem with the microwave, especially since the pieces of glitter remained intact after the whole thing burned. If they were plastic, they probably would have melted, right?
I wonder if it would be slightly better to use one of those countertop ovens (toaster ovens) for remelting the already made fish lures. It would take longer but might be a bit safer for some things.

a silent smoke alarm seems incredibly dangerous
I thought so too but apparently it's common for public buildings because random people don't know how and where to evacuate. So a mass panic makes it more dangerous if there's a fire somewhere

A teaspoon you eat food from is not the same as a teaspoon to measure with. The cutlery teaspoon can hold many volumes but a measuring spoon is specifically a universal measurement so you cannot use a cutlery spoon to measure a teaspoon from a recipe

just started the video, did you maybe read the bag wrong for the dinosaur squishie: it says 0.1 oz / bag which i believe would mean 0.1 oz Per bag? which seems like an odd way to put it but i imagine 0.1 oz isnt the full bag? although i really cant tell haha
alternatively maybe the bag has a translation error i know thats common with toys
yeah i was gonna write the same thing, it says to use 0.1 ounce of the bag, which is weird but makes more sense than the entire bag.
Thanks for spotting that! I didn't notice it at all but the bag doesn't feel like 1oz. Even 0.1oz would be 30g which is a lot more than the pigment in the bag. There's about 4g of pigment inside which I think is the smallest amount they were able to pack up for the kit, so they just tell people to use it all. However the actual amount needed for colour is less than 0.05g
I believe you shouldn't put glitter in the microwave. It is likely that for this reason the material burned....Try melting the material in a water bath! 🙂

The Dino squishies look like it said 0.1 oz of the bag not the whole bag. I think it was saying to use 0.1 oz for each squishy.
You can spray a polymer clay model with a gloss coat to get a shiny mold

They basically pass the costs of the alarm activation and fire truck costs to the person who set it off. Which I can understand if it's to deter smokers but I'm surprised a big building like that doesn't have some kind of insurance for covering false alarms which are not malicious or illegal in nature.

honestly fire alarms that immediately contact professionals should have an analog stop, cus when you KNOW you literally just burned your pancakes and dont need a literal medical team you can shut it off yourselves right away

i dont really prefer the small tipped poscas theyre always a struggle for me (which i hate bc my favourite blue is only available in that size TT-TT) but if you only have the bigger sizes there is still hope!! you can just work very carefully with the lightest touch possible.
OR you can take a smooth surface, like glass, plastic, or something like a ceramic plate, and keep the posca marker pressed down so the paint will flooow out, than you can just approach is like usual paint and use a brush, a pencil, or even a toothpick, to apply the smaller details, this is also what i do when i want to mix two posca colors together, bc i am stuborn and will get the colors i want even if they arent being sold in those colors.

Thank you for the tips! My other worry was that the 3mm Poscas would dry up easily but I'm pleasantly surprised that the paint still flows after weeks even if the nib looks clogged
If you get a hepa 3 filter of some kind, or a make a few inexpensive diy ones, it can help with future smoke issues near the fire alarm and on counter tops. And can help with seaso al things like allergies, flu. And covid too.

I think that the reason why the fishing things burned was because as they were in the mikerwave for too long and to hot next time try it low and slow.
i wonder if a double boiler or something might be a safer way to melt those fishing lures
I really enjoy your squishy experiment videos. The burnt fishing lures was scary. Perhaps using controlled temperature heating with a water bath or double boiler not on the stove would help avoid triggering the fire alarms. Thanks for sharing your findings with us!

maybe because it had glitter flakes in it, they could do something to the heat by reflection and also cos they are technically metal it could have caused problems. Also there might not have been enough water content in them to melt and it went straight to scorch? glad you didn't have to pay another fine!!!

I genuinely thought the fishing baits eyes were digital. Like you took a photo of the fishing bait and all of the squishies, and then drew cross eyes on it with a tablet/pc

maybe try a bain marie for the fish baits? you can control the temp better= stir throughout which can avoid burning :)
I’m surprised it hasn’t struck you yet that the reason the lures did what they did in the microwave was because the glitter is metal? That’s metallic glitter those are metal flakes you don’t microwave metal. I have seen some experiments where you can microwave a spoon or a knife but that’s because of how the electrons are dispersed if you microwave, a fork or bits of metal, you’re going to have problems.if you want to melt a glitter filled fishing lure or bag of lures I think a double boiler may work? Definitely don’t put anything with glitter, metallic glitter that is in the microwave.
Have you ever thought about using digital heating plates like the ones used to melt makeup in beakers? Wondering if that does anything safer than a microwave ☠️☠️☠️☠️ to melt certain crafting materials… or 🤔 🧐 using a hair waxing warmer for those too hmmm so many any ideas lol

I feel like they should always check first before sending the firefighters over instead of immediately sending them without knowing what’s actually happening because smoke detectors go off for many reasons other than fire.

I think I'm done using that microwave for any DIY now 😂! In future I'm only filming heatable DIYs at home where I don't risk setting off any alarms.

I'm just appalled that she had to pay $1000 just because the fire alarm went off. You accidentally made a safety measure activate... Why the hell is that worth charging you??? We make our apartment fire alarm go off accidentally every couple of months because we overcook something or fry in slightly old oil, I can't imagine if they tried to make us pay that much every time.

I don't understand why they even allow microwaves in such places if you can't even cancel false alarms.
We have these silent smoke detectors in our office building and they get set off by literally the stupidest means and very often, like once or twice a month. For example, before Chrismas one guy was reheating his lasagna in the microwave and he didn't even burn it, it just got smoking hot, but the smoke from that hot lasagna triggered the alarm anyways. Luckily in our office building, you can just call the security guy and report in false alarm so you don't have to pay for the fire brigade coming to your building.
Yes I genuinely don't intend to use the microwave for anything now! There's a particle alarm literally in front of it so even the slightest error in microwave settings could set it off.

making people pay almost a thousand dollars for false alarms on fire alarms is crazy.. seems like an evil plot to squeeze money out of the people that live there because false alarms from just small amounts of smoke are extremely common.. it's not like you're calling the fire department and wasting their time, it does it FOR YOU. you absolutely should not be fined for THEM automatically calling the fire department for any fire alarm being set off...
