I've found three new materials that might work for squishies! This video also gave me the chance to do a deep dive in the technical aspects of squishy materials. Most soft silicones are sold for mold-making or replicating skin. So if you're browsing for industrial products then you want the ones labelled "Shore 00" or super soft/skin textured. Silicone-based polymers are usually fairly stable and can be mixed with oil, water or dry pigments/glitter without any problems. However I encountered the first messy reaction in this video by mixing silicone with a water based latex sealant. It turned out very odd, although it did cure into an unusual texture.

8:36 when working with silicone on silicone, you have to use a mold release agent to prevent sticking (like you had). Silicone sticks to virtually nothing, but silicone will stick to silicone VERY easily.

Hi joanna! Im a dental nurse here.
It was fun seeing you mix alginate! If you 'push' the alginate with spatula onto the sides of the bowl a couple times, you can ensure you have a smooth mixture, free of air bubbles!
Hello, little bit of information from someone who's done a degree having worked with these for art purposes.
Dental alginate, which you can usually mix in different strengths too, (right up to very liquidy states that cure over 15 mins) is great for small, and inexpensive disposable mold-making as the alginate begins to degrade after a day (it usually goes mushy rather than hard) It can be found pretty cheap and is great for lifecasting (making a mold of a face/part of body)
It's usually found as a green powder form that you mix with water. Art supply shops rarely sometimes carry it (uk)
Because it's made of seaweed, it also has a very low chance of someone being allergic to it.
Also biodegradable.
In the last experiment the solution did not cure because Silicone will not cure in the presence of latex. Water content in low doses usually forms bubbles in silicone or floats to the top, depending on consistency. Adding water to latex will just make it cure slower because latex sets when exposed to air, whereas silicone reacts chemically by mixing part A and B.
The saying goes that nothing will stick to silicone but silicone!
Usually you would wear a ventilator and gloves to mix silicone parts as it's not good for you
it may not be safe to play with that mushy uncured one.
Thank you so much for that detailed information!! Yes, I had a feeling that latex and silicone weren't supposed to be mixed and also handling it without gloves wasn't the best idea. I only touched it for the few seconds shown on video and then disposed it all. I'm curious if you could help with a question about the Elmer's Squishies? I strongly suspect that it's the same thing as the industrial type silicone, but how can companies market 2 part silicone as safe for kids? Obviously the final piece is safe assuming it cured correctly, but in your opinion, what is the potential risk of letting kids play with uncured silicone without telling them what the ingredient actually is?
@@maqaroonthe companies marketing advanced crafts to little kids reminds me of those little food things that make you use uv resin which can be really complicated and i can see the argument that parents should just watch their kids and do it with them i kinda think it’s packaging is a little deceiving if you don’t look at it closely it looks just like those mini shop fake grocery toys that are just toys not crafts like i saw them at target right across from the baby dolls 💀
Hi! I’m a Dental assistant and I work with the alginate material everyday! I would try to mix it a little more water so the material can flow into the mold and try to use the coldest water that you can to mix the powder. It sets up slower the colder the water is which will give you more time to pour up. You want the ratio to look like thick pancake mix. It will still set up the same way
No ur not

@@thenagamerqueenWhat a stupid reply. It’s not like they’re claiming to be a really famous actor or some shit, good lord.

I was about to say the same thing. I was a dental lab tech, and often worked with alginate. Super specific measurements aren't necessary, as long as it's not soupy.
Air cures the tire sealant. That's how it dries after putting it in a tire. As you ride, the tire spins, slinging the sealant all around the inside of the tire, when there's a leak, some of the sealant leaks out of the hole and will solidify in time as it comes in contact with the air. :)
That stuff for teeth is a nightmare, It feels horrible when in your mouth, it might be fast drying but it feels like forever
I assume what makes the tire sealant cure is the water evaporating, which would explain why nothing happened with the quantity used here. As for mixing it into the silicone, yeah, I'd say the water was the issue here as well, seeing as the two don't really mix. Though it could be interesting to see what would happen if you left the sealant to set for a very long time until basically all the water is gone.
Yes I was wondering how the sealant can work inside a tyre but not dry in the air. I'm guessing the friction and movement helps to spread it into a very thin layer and causes the liquid to evaporate quickly. Just leaving it out in the air doesn't do anything 😬
@@maqaroon hello! I’m not sure if you will see this comment, as this video is (somewhat) pretty old. As someone who has tubeless tires, I thought that I could explain why it didn’t solidify. When you get a flat tire, the hole is usually extremely tiny. The smallest amount of sealant is needed to patch up the hole. Meanwhile, if you get a large hole or gash in the tire, the sealant will not work. This is because sealant was designed to have a large longevity in the tire, while also being able to patch up any small holes. I’ve spilled sealant on the floor in my garage, and small specks dries up within seconds, while the larger puddles stayed wet, even after hours. Sealant was not designed to have a large quantity to be exposed to air.
the dental paste curing so fast makes sense when you consider its intended use. you wouldnt want to be getting teeth impressions done and have to sit there for an hour waiting for them to solidify.
Things have been hard lately. It seems I’m always overworked and underfed, and I’ve begun to forget the nicer parts of life. Your videos seem to bring me back to when I was 10, discovering art and exploring every type of creation in my endless free time.
Can definitely relate. I’ve been going through a pretty rough patch lately and fun little videos like this take my mind off of things. Stay strong friend! We got this ❤

the fact that you still painted a face on the latex sealant squishy shows your dedication.
I love your calm voice. It just keeps me so focused on the video and also you’re not like “oMg GUyS yOUre BacJK”
Keep your algae/ dental materials! You can use it to make temporary molds!
We did that in our plaster casting class in University
You can buy something called deader to add to industrial silicone to give it a softer texture. This is often used in special effects to get the silicone to more closely mimic skin texture. It also bulks it out to reduce the cost further!
Thank you so much for this tip!!! I found some and my next video is all about using it to make silicone softer 😄
@@maqaroon Glad to help! I have been experimenting with making silicone squishies for a while and there is lots to learn, excited to see how it works for you! P.s. maybe a bit less aesthetic but I would love a video on cleaning squishies and/or silicone moulds if you have any tips there XD
You can add more water than stated to the dental alginate to get a slightly longer working time and a more liquid texture. But yeah, its going to go all hard and powdery over time.
There are also dental grade silicone pastes, which you might be interested in for mould making or squishy experiments
Have you ever considered trying to use Sugru as a squishy material? It's a moldable compound that dries into a solid rubber. I'd be interested in seeing how it does in a squishy!
Yes I actually ordered a whole bunch of sugru a while ago! Haven't managed to include that in a video yet.
The silicone looks like a really good alternative to the X-cubes! I'm intrigued by this 👀
I love it when you experiment with materials. It's both fun and educational ❤
the silicone one is so perfectttt
first time catching a fresh one! great content as always! your step by steps always are more understandable than other diy how tos i see! also love the tips for anyones first time working with molds and stuff!
I'm in my third year of college and I've been watching your videos since I was a freshman in high school as a way to comfort myself during stressful days, and I've been stressing out A LOT this week, so seeing a new upload brought a smile to my face. I'm so happy that you're still making these videos after so many years❤
Aww thank you so much!
Honestly tour voice is SO relaxing
I’ve always love these experimental videos. I’m so glad yo uare still makin them ❤
The dental medium has to have the impression poured quickly for this reason. It dries and shrinks. But it makes great, accurate impressions while not poisoning people. 😂
Glitter in silicone is always an iffy idea bc the glitter will cut the silicone up and it'll ruin the project if it's something meant to be touched a lot, like a squishy
Also, latex inhibits silicone curing. A lot of things do. Any amount of research would tell you this.
I'm not sure if it's exactly the same as the dental paste but alginate is often used by artists to make molds of body parts, so it might work better for a mold material rather then the molded material!
Dental paste = alginate. It’s used to create molds for making casts. Technique is required to mix it properly to minimize bubbles, make it set faster or slow down the process, etc. It will dry out eventually. It’s recommended to wear a mask so you don’t inhale the particles.
could you try that one Gudetama squishy idea again, but with different clays? (the solid character inside a squishy casing) you could even make other things like Gastly or Solosis!!
Omg hi I love your channel so much I've been watching since a while now❤ I love your art too it's amazing! :D
you should make a channel just for squishy making.

Maybe for the bicycle sealant, you could try working on a squishy with it for a few days and applying thin layers into the mold at a time.

I HAVENT SEEN THIS CHANNEL IN SO LONG!
Thank you so much for recommending that about polymer clay. I have so much from like a year ago that I haven't even opened yet.😬
If you have polymer clay that’s gone hard, it’s still possible to soften it for use. Either by handling it (using a pasta machine will help save your hands) and/or adding a few drops of isopropyl/rubbing alcohol at a time to soften it. There is clay softener on the market but honestly alcohol is cheaper and works just as well. I’ve had polymer clays from years that I was able to soften.
@@alexieldefanelThank you so much for recommending that. I also have clay softener, but I bought it months ago, so it's probably hard now too.
How is your voice so soothing, your like those reading channels I can easily fall asleep too lmao (this is a compliment don’t worry :)
you shouldn't mix things like silicone or resin with other chemicals, just to be safe. best case scenario is that it doesnt cure at all, worst case scenario you end up with a bad chemical reaction. that's just the common sense when working with any material
SILICONE: Wahooo, I love everything! I love you!
DENTAL: Bring it on, I dare ya!
SEALANT: Kill... me...
For future - Silicone degrades Silicone - so that's probably why it sticks.
Why don't you use mold release sprays on your molds before pouring in your squishy material? Would it affect the squishy? Is it toxic?
Have you tried hearing aid mold material? I have worn hearing aids since a child. It's a 2 part paste that you squeeze into the ear with a syringe. You could probably do really detailed molds that way, but the end result is like a bouncy ball, not a squishy. Still fun, though! ❤

I'll need to use dental paste for a future project, so it's pretty interesting seeing you use it.
Several viewers commented that you can delay the curing time by using more water. You can also keep the mold in its original size (ie prevent shrinkage) by storing it in a tightly sealed plastic bag with wet wipes or some source of moisture.

I feel like that dental paste would be good for making molds of things
Yes I agree but I find it bizarre that it shrinks so much! Especially since in real life they need to make models of people's teeth, and that has to be 1:1 scale. Apparently dentists have to seal the molds inside plastic (with a source of moisture like a wet wipe) and cast the teeth models asap. If the mold shrinks even slightly then it's useless.
Hi! May i ask where do you get the elmers squishy kit thing i want one too but i will make my own mold cuz i dont own the silicone clay thing to make my own custom squishy😅
