Bro!! So happy to see this camera get some love! I’ve been shooting on the s1h for over a year and love it. Taught me how to manual focus. Now I shoot on a Panasonic eva1 and the s1h is my b cam. Great cameras!
I just bought one used in prefect condition for 2200… I used a gh5s for soooo long lol… I will say one thing I realized about the s1h is the image looks very filmic… it’s not like a super sharp digital look and I like it… colors are great, low light is great… and it’s can shoot in 5.9k raw … great camera

@@Josh_Sattin if you happen to be feeling “particularly geeky” I would be curious to hear about your thoughts about the S5 II moire issues. You’re not the first I have seen mention it. I’m not noticing issues with my footage, but it’s quite possible that I’m totally clueless and just not noticing it.
It's there. I haven't tested much for it, but it actually showed up on a parrot that I was filming while on vacation. You can see this on my somewhat recent S5IIX video. Moire is an issue when shooting video with a lot of cameras with high resolution sensors and no OLPF. This is actually one of the main reasons I don't own a Sony A1. You most often see moire on man made materials, fabrics, etc. which was crazy it showed up on a parrot. When I shoot real estate, the moire shows up on roof shingles and other things. I might do some comparisons with the S5IIX and S1H to see how well the OLPF works.
@@Josh_Sattin Thanks for the insight. I will check out that video. I once noticed it from my Fuji Camera, in some very detailed dirt. Like you, I was shocked to see it in a natural environment.
I bought this camera two years ago. I did an exhaustive research on which was the best quality and price option and no matter how much I went around I always came to the same point and that the best option was the S1H, I searched and searched for the Sony Fx3. I make video but I was looking for something hybrid and I decided that the S1H was the best and I don't regret it, it's auto focus until now I don't understand why they like it so much because in the cinema they hardly record with auto focus.
Josh thanks for the video.. You answered my moire question.. but I have another one. When pulling focus, is there a lot of latency? That is my only concern since its only HDMI out , we would be going from the camera to our external monitor on the camera ,then SDI out of that to a bigger monitor where our focus puller is pulling wirelessly. Ive heard Panasonics have this issue , but not sure how true it is. Im concerned that the latency may be too much ...thats the only thing making me balk at getting this...
Another reason it didn't sell well when released is probably because there weren't many L-Mount lenses available when released. I will probably be picking one up (just kind of waiting to see if / when the S1 MK II is released).
@@Josh_Sattin Amen. I’ve only had moire show up once in the two years I’ve been using the S5, but once I saw it, and it was really bad, it’s always in the back of my mind. Which sucks because I love the S5. But I need an S1h for sure. 😉 More money. Lol
I sold two Sonys and bought a much better S1H. I still shoot with it. Only thing that Sony has is Autofocus which honestly I wouldn’t use in a professional shoot anyway. Just bought an S5iix which besides the OLPF is an S1H with good autofocus. Still have an FS7 mii and will likely buy an FX9 mii when it drops just becuase Sony is still industry standard for a lot of Doc and Corporate shoots. Primarily shoot on S1H unless asked for something else. Great camera
Hi, I'm looking for buying a camera for video mostly. And findout also about S1H. It's great, maybe unless autofocus. I wonder if you explain why, on you personal opinion, didn't by a Sony A7sIII instead? It's about 4K 120/60 fps and good autofocus. Maybe it helps me to choose. Thank you!
been shooting on an S1 since it came out and it pulls it punches against much much more expensive cameras of this year on set with the vlog/6k open gate upgrade
Hi Josh, we write you from Colombia. We just bought a Sony a7iv and we are planning to shoot a feature film with another documentalist that has a Lumix S1H. So, as we know you had a Sony a7iv in the past, we want to ask you: How different is the color science of both cameras if we are planning to shoot with the same lenses on the both cameras (vintage ones) but with Picture Profile off? Thank you very much!
You're welcome. I haven't compared those two cameras so unfortunately I can't really comment on the colors between them. I always recommend using two of the same cameras or two cameras of the same brand to make matching them easier. I would also recommend shooting both in log so you have some flexibility in post to get them to match. It would also be a good idea to test them out before shooting your film. Test them out and see how close they match or don't match.
No syncro scan..! in addition to shutter angle which is used to dial out LED screen flicker etc. My colegue uses FX3 and we have to use Resolves DeFlicker to remove it. Not good for a £4K camera @@Josh_Sattin

Lumix was crushing the game with cams like the s1h and gh5 at the time. Even though I switched to Canon and Sony, I'll always have love for lumix
A7S3 Came out in the same time, A7S3 is better in every way lol

It seems like this was the one that a lot of later cameras were developed against. What a package.
Informative video!!! I have 2 GH5, 3 GH5S, 2 GH6, 1 S5II cams. Now I am thinking of getting one or two used S1H cams for higher end productions.

You should consider looking into the Sigma FP 12bit DNG at such a small body & for $1,499 is unheard of
Awesome video. Loved the vibes in the beginning!

Agreed. Great point!
Great !
Definitely have a look at the Leica SL2-S if you can find one! That is one beast of a (cinema) camera.
Oh it’s definitely on my want list! I was actually debating the SL2-S and S1H.
Curious to know what provider you use for sourcing music? I love the tracks on these kind of videos of yours. Very North Carolina :)
Thanks! I will be talking about it in an upcoming video 😉

how does this stack up against your komodo? understanding these are situational cams, have you tried to match them?

I have been using this cam for many months as I am a Leica still shooter. I have an SL2S But... the autofocus STILL isn't the best for UA-cam stuff.
Agreed. The S5II/S5IIX have good autofocus and I'm sure future Lumix cameras will be even better.
dope video. at first I was like "I don't want to see nature!", but then you went into talking haha^^
strange decision . why wouldn't you buy second s5II o s5IIX?
I will probably get more into this in a future video. Mainly due to the OLPF and some differences in the image.
@@Josh_Sattin yes, i thought about OLPF too .
Good, to go out, to many talking heads. Iam panasonic user from 2019. TZ90, LX15 and S5ii, nice review S1H
dont know if this is the camera or just bad color grading but the footage looks so muddy with the colors.
Def under-rated...to bad Panasonic can't get there AF on par
Did you hear of the kalori olpf paid upgrade for the s5iix? I think it
Costs like $700 to add an olpf to the camera
I did see that. Seems like a lot of money to upgrade a S5II or S5IIX though.
It seems ESPECIALLY like a lot when Pentax and Nikon in the past have offered a NON-OLPF version of their cameras for MORE than the normal version.
@@photovideomusic Bit of a different situation though isnt it... but yes I cant fathom why companies are removing their OLPFs
