@@pateris Alex & Geddy live not too far from each other in Toronto. Been band mates since '68. Neil (RIP) was the "new guy" on drums in ' 74. Toured together for 40 years. More consecutive gold & platinum albums than any other group, right after the Beatles & Rolling Stones. Lyrics always had meaning, no explicit profananity or sex in any of their songs. And the kicker that proves they're just genuine, decent Canadian guys.... they're still happily married to their high school sweethearts.

Neil Peart was a magician on the drums, and an extraordinary soul with an incredible gift for lyrics and storytelling. The world is lesser without him. The great moment in this video starts at the 2:06 point, where Geddy sings the epic line "one likes to believe in the freedom of music, but glittering prizes and endless compromises shatter the illusion of integrity." Behind him, Alex and Neil smile mischievously at each other as they share the inside joke: they are (finally) singing these lines at - of all places - the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the center of the establishment music industry that had improperly rejected them for so long. Living well is the best revenge - and Neil certainly did that for as long as his body would let him. RIP.

When I wasn't even legal to get into a club, my brother invited me to the Agora in downtown Cleveland for a Monday night concert series they had featuring Rush. When we walked up to the door to get in, ( as my brother had met the sons owner in college) we were greeted by Cleveland s finest who said, "sorry buddy, we're sold out" as there was a long line of people waiting for the doors to open. My brothers friend shook hands with the cop, the lady in the ticket window stamped our hands with out money or id's, and we walked right in. We went right up to the stage, took the table closest to the stage, as the place had not even opened, and was ABSOLUTELY BLOWN AWAY, not to mentioned deafened as they played their entire debut album. My ears range for 3 days afterwards, and I have been a die hard fan ever since. Incredible talent and a sound and history others can only dream of. I miss them.

Last time I saw Rush playing live was back in 2013 at Festival d’été de Québec and I remember clearly that the musicianship was outstanding, but that the vocals were hard to witness.
I love Rush but I think they should have got a new singer at least for live performances many years ago. Ok Rush is a 3-men band but Geddy’s has aged and their early work is too hard (which is perfectly understandable).
Some people age and remain able to sing their earlier stuff without too much trouble (thinking of Sting and Rodger Hodgson), but others can’t and it’s ok.

@@Ogilla I don’t disagree with you my friend. Just sharing the results of my own research and my experiences with these tools. I have likewise noticed that Geddy’s voice has definitely changed, but it sounds quite different on their own DVDs than it does here. This particular video was was the HOF’s production team and was very likely not managed by Rush. This is probably not something Rush or their producers would have ever done themselves.
And like you, I cut him slack as well. He maintained most of his range all the way to the very end. It’s impossible to maintain his 30’s level physical stamina all the way into his 60s. He did an impressive job given his age, but nobody could deny he’s had more trouble these days than in the past. And you said it well. It’s totally understandable. Geddy still did better than many other rock singers his age, and for that we give him credit and cut him slack on the rest. (He was a phenomenal singer really. Never got the credit he deserved for it.)
But with tools like Melodyne, they are VERY common in the industry and at minimum, 80-90% of the songs on the radio have used them. These tools have a characteristic sound if misused. We are quite used to hearing it so we don’t easily notice the artifacts anymore, but the very rapid pitch shifts and shadow notes (the underwater feeling) is VERY characteristic of Melodyne. Rush was unusual in that they did not use magic for his vocals or treat them. Most bands can’t say the same.
Essentially, these tools try to detect two things: pitch and formant. But singers never hit a note dead on, and they never transition without a ramp up to the new note. As a result, the detection algorithms have to have parameters on how quickly they will jump to a new note. If this timing is too fast, it sounds artificial and robotic. If it’s too slow, it doesn’t do any corrections. This is why a lot of manual input is required when using these tools, and it’s how they can sound so transparent and totally invisible. But it literally has to be done by hand for good results. (I’ve had to correct some pretty bad vocals before. A professional could probably elaborate better than I could, but safe to say, it’s definitely tedious.)
It sounds like what happened here was that someone didn’t do this process manually and relied on the built algorithms to try to detect the original and “correct” notes. When it thinks it detects a note and it’s off from the root/correct pitch, it will try to correct it in place, and it also shifts the formant while it’s at it (making the note sound “deeper” or “higher” as if it was sung at that actual pitch. It does this seamlessly if it’s correcting to the right pitch, but has some pretty funny-sounding results if the algorithm is wrong.) But when these notes are detected in a choppy way without manual input, the algorithm is always trying to force notes that aren’t actually incorrect into places that they aren’t supposed to be. And while it’s at it, it does so very fast, often bouncing rapidly between several notes before actually settling. And it even tries to correct the “ramp up” transitions between notes. These ramp up transitions are where the washy underwater feeling comes from. It’s trying to force a note where there is none. And it can totally mangle an otherwise decent vocal because those transitions aren’t actually natural.
The end result is that very characteristic strained, glassy, washed out/underwater sounding vocal. That’s exactly what seems to have happened here. It’s very different from the sound of their official DVDs or any of their live shows (or anything Rush themselves ever released).
But I have to give Rush immense credit. They stayed away from these tools and released honest live albums even into their 60s. It’s rare in the industry. I respect it and have always enjoyed Geddy’s vocals. The only album where production ever really used these tools was TM (you can hear the difference from the cellphone recordings vs. the DVD. They weren’t overdubbed. They were just treated properly.)
I have a feeling that the rock and roll hall of fame producers probably did this one. this whole thing doesn’t sound like something Rush would do. I have to say it’s still phenomenal recording/video. And it’s Rush. Any rush show is always over the top.
Best regards my friend, and cheers to a fellow Rush fan.

I've been a RUSH fan since 2112. Being a drummer in the 1970s - 80s was an awesome time to learn from a lot of talented drummers but Neil Peart was the highest challenge to be able to pull off his drum fills and timing. Congrats to these 3 brothers! I'm so glad they were finally recognized for their professional musicianship and their brand of rock n roll.

My two boys grew up listening to Rush as I played air drums with their little arms to their uncontrollable giggles. Their first concert was my last concert. Time Machine tour 10 years ago next week I believe.
They met me for dinner last week and I hear Digital Man Live pumping in the air before I could even see his truck. Proud Pops.
Sucks we'll never hear the fruits of their creativity again, but damn glad we got to enjoy the group as long as we did. Thank you gentlemen. RIP Neil.
