I REALLY don’t understand why these reporters from France and Portugal are not saying “hey! These people want freedom and safety… they are already in the land of freedom… FRANCE!

Who are Portugal going to give reparations to? Brazil? Brazil is analogous to the US: slavery got their new nation going, and they profited immensely from it. Brazil can compensate its own black and indigenous citizens and make their rich whites pay for it. Imagine the absurdity of Britain giving the Americans compensation.

There was a slavery in Europe perpetrated both by Russian Emoire and the Ottoman Empire. It finished later than slavery in the US and was much more brutal. Those interested can search for terms like “white gold” or white slaves and harems… these are not the stuff of fairytales. Where do you think the term slave comes from and why is it so similar to Slav (although Muslim Turks like to enslave the English as well). So when will we get our reparations or at least acknowledgement that black slavery of the Atlantic trade was not the only one at the time???

Reparations for slavery are a very difficult subject… which role played during the slavery age (which still exists) must pay reparations?
It all started with the ultimate crime, those who enslaved a free human. That is actually Africans. Those who sold slaves… up here in Canada, that’s the Catholic Church (largely). And let’s not forget, not only Africans were enslaved. Up here we had 4 of every 5 slaves were aboriginal people. Mainly from the current Midwest US… Who enslaved them? Aboriginals from north eastern North America…
Prior to the arrival of Europeans, my ancestors in Mexico were well known for enslaving weaker peoples… that is why the Spaniards were able to defeat Montezuma. Those who were mistreated by the Aztecs were more than happy to help these foreigners defeat the Aztecs.
There is plenty of blame to go around.
Let’s limit it to returning cultural items which were stolen by Europeans and Americans.
