w/ the amount of ways we can play old games nowadays, from official enhanced re-releases to romhacks on modded consoles or pc, people need to step away from the "authentic experience" mindset, it's really just up to however the person wants to experience these games, whether on actual hardware or otherwise
Yeah, the authentic experience is only really for when you're using the original hardware and controllers. Few games really need that these days, only games that really have a feel that can't be replicated with modern controllers and the such. But most modern TVs don't support all the retro formats, so you need devices like the retrotink 4k to really get the best modern "authentic" experience. Or at least devices that convert your old console signals to HDMI so they can be played on a modern TV, though they tend to not all look good if your TV doesn't have a really good built-in CRT filter option, which most don't (hence the benefit of things like the retrotink)
I think you're misunderstanding what he means by that. The hack is designed to be Gen 1 and remain Gen 1, no Gen 2-9 mechanics. Gen 1 is the only place you can experience the badge boost exploit, so the hack is designed around it.
Seeing that the Pokemon all have unique sprites when looking at your party is enough by itself to convince me to give this rom hack a shot. I wanna see how all my favorites look like.
I have always been that traditionalist that avoids rom hacks and looks to prioritize plying on original hardware. That being said, time to order one of these handheld emulators so I can tap in! You really sold me with the whole ‘fidelity’ bit. Great watch as always!
I was the same way for a while, until I was talked into playing the Mother 3 fan translation, because Earthbound has always been one of my favorite games, and I'm so glad for it. I may never have the "authentic" or "original intended experience" with the game, because i don't live in Japan with a working GBA, and can't read Japanese, but my experience with the game moved me to tears and offered many hours of highly enjoyed jrpg gameplay. It also opened the door to practically endless possibilities for what i could play. Side note, if you don't have the handheld and want to save money. Retroarch is a solid platform to emulate any system, and it has mobile app versions that also make the experience handheld and portable.
Thanks to this video I got Crystal Legends loaded up on my phone and I’m having a blast! I love that I can encounter a wider variety of Pokémon early game and so I’m playing with the same team I always remember having
Great to hear! I'm definitely gonna start up Crystal Legacy soon. It's crazy to see how many more people are getting into this scene thanks to emulators on their phones!
The Legacy series is a great attempt to maintain the feel of the game but make many of the changes we as fans have learned from. Truly, I can't play the OG game anymore because the flaws in the early pokemon formula.
A lot of what you've discussed here has connected the dots for me with why I enjoy the Radical Red Romhack so much. The choice, the QOLs, but also, being the game that has changed with me.
Playing this now. The quality of life updates that have become expected make this better. Exp bar, pokeball shown if you've already caught, quick save/pokecenter heal, move relearner/deleter. That alone make it better, but there is so much more polish. 10/10 love it. Oh, and my favorite Onix isn't trash tier.
I think The Pokemon Company also agree that the games need to change to fit into our lives nowadays. And that’s why they gave us Let’s Go Eevee and Pikachu years ago. But they still miss the mark for so many of us fans by not recognizing our desire to still fit the classic versions of these games into our current lives. They recognized this during the DS eshop era. But I’m surprised they still haven’t done something like this and offered it on the Switch.
They fixed problems that OG Devs let slip through the cracks due to time restraints, what’s not to love??? This is Gen 1 at its absolute finest and I’m almost done with my playthrough .
this was great man. Subbed after this video. Where at can we buy that miyoo mini? and how do we download the rom onto it? does it just plug in via usb or can it access internet via wifi? i hear there is a mini plus as well.
@@JakeSteinberg Yea! A polywag from fishing with the old rod in the first body of water I found, and a vulpix from somewhere else (not from fishing jaja) I love how the new mechanics are shown through game dialogue, Its really been a blast
Those re-releases on the virtual console was horrible. no bug fixes for pokeballs or moves. there was opportunity to fix them, and they took none. I don't care if they keep or don't keep the missingno glitch and others, they should of at least fix the few two problems that don't work as described in- game.
Doesn't this whole argument also apply to people who prefer playing Fire Red or Let's Go Pikachu or even Radical Red as their nostalgic Gen 1 throwback experience?
Why showing the GBA cartridge though? Pretty annoying. The hack is indeed the best yellow hack though. Whether it's also the best Gen 1 hack is hard to tell since we live in a world where there's also "Pokémon PureRGB", "Shin Pokémon" and last but not least "Kanto Expansion Pak".
The GBA cartridge is the 'official' image Smith uses when talking about the hack. Check out his channel to learn more and see it front and center on the thumbnail!

Love this comment

Dood, you are a channel i didnt know i needed in my life. Thank you :D
So awesome you mentioned the Miyoo Mini Plus! It’s my go-to for old school Pokémon games. Definitely gonna check out Yellow legacy next!
“CHAT” being the rival is too real 😂
"Is this tantalizing to you, the viewer?"
Tittilating even!
Pikachu reacting does it for me. Wish we got a couple extra reacts. Or random triggers of it. Was so cool how happy. Mad pika was

I came for yellow legacy, stayed for the meta discussion on “real game”
I AM STILL PLAYING POKEMON UNBOUND, hack room and I love it
So much Jake content let’s goooooo
Also totally agree on your thoughts here! Enjoyable watch as always
Just the fact that we can complete the Pokédex in the game without trading, is already worth it!!!!

The EXP gauge/meter is the real UX upgrade in Gen 2 and glad that they brought it to OG Gen 1
I love the persona music playing in the background. Way to tickle my nostalgia in the sneakiest way.

Great video! :D
Oh wow I finally found you after leaving GameExplain!
Watch his Thousand Year Door let's play :p
I agree, and miss Yellow. Sadly I think I'm more sensitive to graphics than I first thought..
Great video as always, but I really love that your notes are just a drawing of Spongebob.
They fixed problems that OG Devs let slip through the cracks due to time restraints, what’s not to love??? This is Gen 1 at its absolute finest and I’m almost done with my playthrough .
I got distracted by the persona music, P5 had such a great sound track
Great video, ya lo bajé!! Ready para jugarlo!!

I loved this game when I played it this year
Ive been playing Yellow Legacy and holy crap is it good. The best description I've heard is "its as good as your childhood brain remembered it"
Any unexpected team members so far?!?

If someone wanted to argue those things, then sure!
Shin Pokemon
Turn that baby up!!
I made this video months ago but I know exactly what this comment is about--the fast forward!!! 😂😂😂
I'm 5 badges deep in my playthrough on my Anbernic rg35xx
.... until you play pokémon yellow expansion pack
Is let’s go Pikachu a legit, fidelity accurate version of gen 1….for me it was and this could be amazing for my top favorite Pokémon game
Pov: you set the speed to 2 since people talk too slow
What about trades? Pokemon that evolve from trades?
Pokemon that evolve from trades can evolve via leveling up in this hack.
so how do I get a physical copy for myself?
how do you add the rom hack to the device?
the same way you add any game to the device. Patch the rom on your PC and then put it in the right folder on your micro-sd card.
Are there shinies?
Was it this game or Crystal Legacy that wanted you to pay a fee just to download and play it?
Why showing the GBA cartridge though? Pretty annoying.

This has been removed
Just play poke mmo it's free and tens time better then this
Mos def…
My favorite Gen 1 rom hack is Ash Gray based on the original anime.
I have RG35XX handheld same color as you but my screen is bit bigger.
That's a gen 3 rom hack, it's firered
Nah, Pokemon PureRGB straight BODIES this hack. I’m so tired of people saying it’s the perfect way to play generation one. False.
