32:00 Fun fact, if you spin around on the same space of grass, you still have an encounter chance with each turn, and it doesn't decrease your step counter
I like Retroachievements, but often the problem is that whoever takes the time to make an set is also a superfan with 10x higher gameplay skill than you.
Yeah. I only play certain games because their achievements are basically ingame achievements, like pokémon gold or wario land 3 or Donkey Kong Land 3. As soon as the game has a popular speedrun category, it often involves nonsense speedrunning achievements or tricks that you need super high skill for.
@@jasona4629 Feel ya. I specifically mentioned G/S because they didn't have any battle tower/facility at all. It's just "defeat a gym leader with all pokémon at the same level and set mode"... which btw, it feels super weird that neither set mode nor level cap is an achievement in later pokémon games when they are (alongside no items used) by far the most popular "restrictions" people use in challenge runs. The achievements on the website can be super weird sometimes.
I LOVE retroachievements!!! I just found your channel and watched this one and the other 3 sonic ones. Subscribed because of these and am SO hyped to see more retroachievements!!!!
_Safari Zone troubles_ One of the other sets for Pokemon is the Professor Oak Challenge, which I was... "forced" to complete for an event (I just needed a complete Pokedex, but I rightly figured that getting distracted by other achievements in the main game would frustrate me even more). That stupid Chansey and Tauros... Oh, and I definitely went for the "buy Pokemon" route when possible, since one _specific_ machine has higher odds of a payout. Fast Forwarding on it for incremental progress was much more preferred than trying to get successful Safari rolls.
This was really entertaining! I love the idea of earning achievements for games that didn't originally have them--and for you to do it in Pokémon Yellow is even more impressive with how janky that ol' game is, haha! Sonic Heroes is one of my favorite Sonic games, as well! Right up there with Sonic Adventures DX. I'm looking forward to your video on it. Subscribed ❤
Loved the edit and the commentary! I mastered Yellow a couple of months ago, tye most time-consumimg was to level Pikachu to 100 (Mimic strat is actually very nice to destroy Bruno and Lance) and, of course, grind all that EXP for evolving Pokémon (I hate you Dragonite), but instead of the Elite4 I went for Cerulean Cave
MY BOI SANDSLASH IS IN THE THUMBNAIL 🗣❗️❗️❗️❗️ I'm actually impressed to see how much of a menace Sandslash is in the first generation, which as a fan of the stone spiky boi, glads me a lot
"I was going to do Smash Bros 64" Pretty tricky, but I'm sensing a "but". "But I realized it wasn't going to be as simple as I expected, so I needed to _not_ do that." Fair. "That's why I'm playing Sonic Heroes next!" Speaking as a guy whose first Sonic game (not counting the Pico) was that one... I think you may have replaced the tough set with an even tougher set here. But hey, I was expecting Pokemon to be worse than it was, so maybe I'm wrong again.
I'll never forget how The Game Grumps replaced their "Last Time on Game Grumps" jingle for Sonic Heroes with Dan instead singing "SONIC HEROES!! NOOOOO!!!"
Been loving these RetroAchievement videos. I was wondering if you take comment requests when it comes to these, can't wait for the Sonic Heroes one especially since RetroAchievements recently added GameCube games.
they should've made a secret achievement which should be called 'A Glitch in the Mewtrix', which is use Mew Glitch to encounter Mew and catch Mew. (this is actually missable if you are unable to trainer fly glitch and have beaten all the trainers who's special stat corellates to Mew)
I'd choose HELIX FOSSIL since Omastar's Surfs and Blizzards hit harder than Kabutops's Surfs and Blizzards in Gens 1, 2, and 3. Omastar's Base Stats in Gen 1: - HP: 70 - Attack: 60 (Both can't learn Rock Slide anyway so snuh.) - Defense: 125 - Speed: 55 - Special: 115 Kabutops's Base Stats in Gen 1: - HP: 60 - Attack: 115 (Both can't learn Rock Slide anyway so snuh.) - Defense: 105 - Speed: 80 (Only good thing because crits) - Special: 70 (Crits do nothing for that mediocre Special)
RetroAchivements has somthing called hardcore mode, which bans save states, slow motion or most other emulation tools (outside from speedup). It also gives your achivements a cool border. He is playing on hardcore mode.
Turns out that you can battle the Cinnabar Gym Trainers after getting the question right in Gens 1 and 3 by simply talking to them. You're just not forced into the battle if you get the answer right.
@7:23 Fun Fact, Gyarados is the best Pokemon for a Gen 1 play through, given its diverse movepool. You'd have to research why, but... it's true... at least for Red/Blue.
Is there a reason you caught dragonair in Safari Zone when you already would need to level the Dratini up to a dragonite? Would save a pretty brutal grind if the set allows it, but I don't remember the set perfectly
after all these years of replaying yellow i never knew he would go into the box unless you have to keep trying and then he finally does? or only when he feints? i just gave up after 1 try haha
how is there not an achievement for getting all blaine's questions right? (also you don't need to get them wrong to fight the trainers, you can just talk to them)
Now I wonder how much of a pain the subset of this game is, as there are two of them for Pokemon yellow Wonder if Sonic heros will be his fav sonic game after getting all the achievements as that game can be kind of jank and what you have to do to get the final
kabutops > omastar. Also kid me somehow found out you can game the step counter in the safari zone by lightly pressing on the directional button (at least it worked on the gameboy color) so that your character turns but doesnt move. This counts as movement for the sake of spawning pokemon but not for the step counter.
You don't actually have to worry about the step mechanic for the safari zone in gen 1 though do you? You can get a wild encounter by changing direction without walking to another tile.
i really liked this video, but if you make a followup doing another pokemon game, can you PLEASE us the real names of the pokemon? the joke names got really confusing really quick

thats not how it works in gen 1, that was implemented in gen 3
I've been obsessed with RetroAchievements since joining near the end of May. Breathes so much life into older titles.
"This is like speedrunning an enemies to lovers" - some wise soul referring to John feeding Pikachu potions to make it like him more
11:43 Fun fact: if you talk to Pikachu while in rock tunnel he can actually light up the tunnel without flash
It's only after Pikachu learns thunderbolt
He needs to be level 30 minimum
Quite Peculiar, I sure do hope people use this whenever they forget to bring HM.
I did this as a kid because I did not know about flash

That time-lapse with the gauntlet felt like the visual representation of asking a drunk guy to recite the poke rap.
Fun fact: I usually buy the Magikarp just so I can have a Gyrados by the SS Anne. Gen 1 was very good to the water not-dragon.
16:42 this is based off the episode from the anime called “The Ninja Poke-Showdown”, hence they name
the achievement for erika was also a reference to a episode
this applies to basically every badge achievement.
