  • Making a bridge guard for a jointer from plywood and aluminium.
Recently I acquired 2 bigger, old cast iron woodworking tools. The first a bandsaw and second a jointer or surface planer. These old tools work great but they are from a time before health and safety. So to add some degree of safety to this tool I made a European style or bridge guard for the jointer form scraps of plywood and aluminium square tube I have lying around.
It is sturdy, and works smoothly and will see action soon. The jointer is not in working condition at this point. I already cleaned and painted the machine, next up is some kind of enclosure for the base and installing the motor. Stay tuned for the full 'restoration' video some time soon!

I just came across your video from two years ago. At about the same time I made a similar guard for a 1950 Atlas jointer that no longer had the “pork chop” guard. I plan to retro my version and incorporate some of your approaches. Nice work.

I like this guard, it was simple to make and effective, only just sold the machine a couple of weeks ago. Good luck and thanks for watching!
