    If you worry about depreciation for a sports car, you're probably doing life wrong. I had my Turbo S to the track last night and I'm no billionaire or anything... how else are you going to use a car like this one to its fullest? Just drive it.

    Right as I start actually looking into Porches and my perception of them changes from "good, but way overpriced" to "the best bar none, but still somewhat overpriced", this review comes out.

    • @1SaG
      @1SaG 7 років тому +20

      Overpriced... hmmm... yeah, kinda. But if you stay away from their ridiculous options list, you can get a car for a *reasonable* price. Especially when you factor in the re-sale value. Especially in this case. Boxsters and Caymans are pretty crap at holding their value when compared to the 911 ... but I would hazard a guess that the GT4 will become a (minor) future classic.

    • @zarbon700
      @zarbon700 7 років тому +9

      lobsterbark for the money, the Lotus Evora 400 is a much better car than the GT4.
      Porsche purposely handicaps many of their models to prevent them from competing with each other. That's why the GT4 has long gear ratios to prevent it from being to close to GT3 performance.

    • @Baerchenization
      @Baerchenization 7 років тому +1

      The GT4 costs about as much as a 981 GTS - what do you expect?! Free GT3-knock-offs for everyone? ;) And btw, every manufacturer sees to not upsetting the model hierarchy... that's why an SL65 must not be quicker than an SLS, etc, etc...

    • @lobsterbark
      @lobsterbark 7 років тому +13

      Baerchenization Gm stopped caring about that kind of stuff recently, and now the highest trim Camaro is cheaper and faster than the highest trim Corvette. I think that manufacturers shouldn't do intentional handicapping, but in Porches case they would have a lot more to lose by not handicapping than most manufacturers. Their entire business model is based on upselling and handicapping.

Jack is good, but I want to hear 10 min of Mark giving his driving impressions. Not 2 min of Jack giving his impressions with Mark saying whether or not he agrees. *this car is all about how it makes you FEEL*
    I'm so tired of people (especially entitled people in parking lots) coming up to me and essentially go "why buy a Cayman GTS? Or a Cayman at all for that matter? With the money you spent, you could have bought XYZ ABC EFG car that's faster!"
    And usually all of those cars they recommend are completely different than the Cayman (starting from S model with sports chrono and exhaust or better). I tell them I don't want the best performance. I don't care if another car is 0.01 seconds faster. I don't care if it's got more pretentious numbers. I want to feel good driving my car on the streets. I want a great, high revving, naturally aspirated soundtrack to go along with it too and feel the confidence that the mid chassis inspires. I don't care if your Honda with a truck's turbo will go faster in a straight line or your Mustang V8 having "more horsepower" or your ugly sounding pretentious Reflective gold BMW M4s.
    And more importantly and strangely to most. I don't WANT a ridiculously fast mid engine hyper car. I want a sports car (unless it's a 570S! Feels like this car but with even more of 'everything'

      This. I haven't enjoyed much driving other cars with way more power or capabilities than cayman. As stated in the video, the perfect balance of road feel, amazing engine sound and chassis dynamic are unbeatable! Frankly base 981 cayman with very low options for $60k on road was the steal of the century! You have just enough power to rev out the motor everywhere on street. Excellent review!

    I love the brutal simplicity of these cars’ interiors, save for the deluge of buttons on the center console (997 Carrera is the best example of this). A friend of mine had one of these with the carbon racing seats. I sat in it during a road rally and it fit like a glove. I’ve seen mods where people have put in glass engine covers which look amazing. It might make the interior kinda hot though. I’d love to pick up one of these on the used market some time if they don’t get prices out of the atmosphere!

    the special sauce of this channel is the honesty. some would very likely praise this car to the moon cause it's a donation car, but letting people know the real pros and cons ensures the right type of person will get this car, in a way that these people get the money and a new car owner is not disappointed and enjoys the car cause he/she can and knows what they're getting.. a win-win situation, just cause someone tells it like it is. and that's rare, and that's why we love it.
    I've never watched car reviews in my life, it's was all the same boring shit or some screaming maniac acting it out for it to seem exciting, but it's acting and nice shots. here I genuinely get informed, educated, entertained and feel like I'm getting value for spending 30 minutes of my life on here. this is, basicaly, the channel that got me watching car reviews.

    It’s all a matter of perspective. I have a 2020 Evora GT, love it and don’t consider it “ too hard core for the street “. Yes, the ride is stiff, but it’s a sports car!! With all the luxury and fancy gadgets I think the perception has changed in the last 30 years and what used to be looked upon as a sports car is now considered to be a track car. Drive the hell out of it! Enjoy it for what it is!

  • @ormand3000

    A few corrections from a butthurt Porsche boi:
    1) Both inlets in the side bring in air to the engine, not just one side. They each have an air element. You're getting confused with the 987 or 718 - the 981 doesn't have this issue, and consequential, carries superior balance
    2) Access to everything you need on the engine is remarkably easy, in fact, I would say better than a traditional car. You have top, bottom, front, rear and side to side access - nearly 100%. A traditional car primarily gives you top, bottom and front side access only.
    3) PCCB do require a little bit of heat even for street use.
    4) Spherical bushings are not malcontent in averse weather conditions.

In fact they act like they don't exist, like Porsche is God's gift to driving. Here we can see that this is a regular car, albeit a very good one. With that said, there are other performance vehicles I'd take over this.

    Great video, and one day after the LeMans win-what a nice present for Porsche fans! You're getting better and better, and you've had just about the greatest production value south of shows like the Grand Tour for quite some time anyways.
    As much as I like the idea of the GT4, the closing words are kinda why I'm pretty happy with my Miata: It's great fun at about 40-80 mph, you don't have to worry too much about about depreciation, because there's not much to depreciate, it doesn't gobble up too much fuel, maintenance is affordable, and yet it *still* feels super rewarding, communicative and direct to drive (espcially with good coilovers on it).

    Few days late to this video, but every time I think you've reached a certain filming + editing level, WOW... you outdo yourself once again. Incredible work with all the rolling shots, and I love the new exterior windshield view you included here. Beautiful car and a true joy to drive, I'm sure!

    Porsche really is the master of design. Clean, functional, beautiful. I believe the extra space there is because many who buy these will be bankers and geeks who will never take it to a track. They just like the GT image. I remember when I was working, there was a white 911 GT3 in the front, it was just used as a work commuter.

    The Boxster and Boxster S make great daily drivers. If carrying groceries put beer in frunk and pizza in the trunk. The GT4 is a great car for track and weekends in my view. The mid engine balance is unbelievable.

    Thanks very good review.
    I owned one for 6 months and sold it for the very reason you mentioned. On the road just frustration. On track awesome.
    I took it 4 times to Sebring International and enjoyed it ( used to race GT 3 Cup cars ).
    I bought a Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio . This car is very useful on both track and road although on track a bit slower than the GT 4.

It's great seeing he's a part of something so community oriented. Hope he got some seat time in that GT4 hahah

    Thank you so much for posting this video. The GT4 is my dream car, but I have only been able to drive one for a few short laps at Barber. This is the best, most comprehensive review on this car that I have seen anywhere. I really appreciate the segment where you go over the underpinnings in detail and point out the pros and cons of some of the design choices. I wish I could have won the drawing for this car, but until the day I can buy one, I can enjoy your video and keep dreaming. Keep up the great work!

      My Cayman S 981 PDK with sports Chrono had the ecu remapped to 364hp, 420Nm, 0-100km/h 3.89sec.... pulls like the clappers from 3000rpm to redline and no more torque dip at 3400rpm. The best S$1900 mod for the 3.4l engine which transforms a great driving experience into an awesome one. I laugh during and after every drive now!!

    In my tiny little town here in NC I had one of these pull up next to me in my FiST and want to do a pull. Obviously I knew the outcome beforehand but I felt honored so I went with it. Man these things sound wicked and have a presence in person.
    Would take a GT4 over any 911.

    I love your reviews! I appreciate the real world views you insert into your commentary. It informs us regular folks what it would be like living with a vehicle in everyday life. In your reviews, I get a better understanding what it would be like owning a particular vehicle in my geographical area.Thus, just because a vehicle is luxurious, prestigious, and a mechanical gem, does not necessarily mean it’s a fit for everyone’s lifestyle. That can be a hard thing to discover. Most times we realize these truths until we’ve already made the purchase. First world problems perhaps, but problems nonetheless.

    The 981 series does air intake and cooling on both side intakes (split vertically). The 987 model split one side to the other. The benefit of the 981 way is that RHD car drivers can still hear the induction.

    Great review. Unfortunately confirms my suspicion... I have been looking to buy a 1st gen Cayman or a lotus but I had to admit that I would not be doing as many track days as I would want even though I'd only be putting 4-5k miles/year on the car. There aren't too many tracks around here (Lime Rock is 2 1/2 hours away, Palmer and Thompson 1 1/2 hours away for example).
    Next year maybe something like a MX5 or BRZ/86 to see if I can get into regular track days on top of motorcycle track days. I just don't want to get bored with driving performance cars like when I did autocross in the mid 00's even though I can easily afford it now.
