I was wrong! The GTS did not come standard with the LSD however as far as I can see most came with PTV which is what includes it. My bad. Last time I rely on 7 year old memories 😂. Anyway I hope you enjoy the sounds of this little monster and special thanks to my Patreon supporters for making this content possible.
I don't think very many have PTV from reading the forums. I asked a Porsche driving instructor what he thinks of it and he said you cannot really tell the difference. I have it just as a tech fetish item, but do not feel it really does much for me, if anything, but then again I am not trying to do 'funny stuff' on public roads... anyway, in 5.5 years, I have NEVER touched the gear selector to shift - that never occurred to me, given the paddles :) And btw, those weird knobs on the other steering wheel are not a bad idea of an early revision, they are the default with the multi function wheel, so they were a bad idea all the way through ;) You get the paddles, if you pay extra for the Sport wheel. Can't remember anymore whether it was standard on the GTS, though. Not having the paddles is the greatest oversight when optioning this car... I like to remember the LSD, which is mechanical in 981 unlike in the 991, came in a 'package' with the active/dynamic engine mounts.
Porsche really nailed these 981 Caymans. Surprised to see they got the shift direction wrong, they also forgot to add a proper handbrake! Can’t have it all....
Idk what you mean with shift direction wrong, in germany its pretty much standart this way. up for up and down for down is just natural feeling while driving.
I have a GTS. I can confirm, brilliant car to drive every day and the sound is epic, especially in sports plus. Mine is a manual, the gear change is a work of art.
Just to say that I love your videos. I am also an engineer ( in Formula 1 ! ) and so ready to leave my "corporate" world and find happiness in my work life as well ( I have watched some days ago a video about you writing your resignation letter ). Anyway, keep doing what you are doing !
Hands down one of the best car reviews I've seen. All your comments make sense and you separate the road vs track context, what most people will be happy with, the trade-off of buying S vs GTS... all the real important questions! Will definitely check out the rest of your channel 👍
Yes yes yes! Caymans are so much fun & even base ones are totally legit sports cars. I recently had the privilege to attack the Tail of the Dragon in my friend’s base PDK 718 Cayman. We did three full runs; the middle we swapped keys. I had way more fun than he did after quickly acclimating to PDK/extra weight/width of 718 while he struggled a bit with my manual NC1 Miata; he hadn’t driven a manual in several years since he wisely sold his 2016 Mustang GT PP1. Both of our cars are in their element on mountain roads. Another friend has a 981 GTS PDK, another an 06 987 manual Cayman S. I have bookmarked this video as we will all be together tomorrow. Your channel has gotten fantastic since you went full time. I’ll have my Miata with me in New England this summer for some adventures/visiting family & friends. I want guidance on good local roads/car events during my whirlwind road trip.
Remember @ted next time, Sport+ button and then you'll actually have the car in launch control (it will feel a bit different on launch). I've recorded 4.1 w LC, else it's more like 4.3ish. At least per phone mounted app.
Great video! This brings back memories. I can see your point. Having owned a 981 GTS for four years as a daily and then got a 718 GT4, the GTS is definitely closer to the sweet spot for the road (around 300hp in my opinion). I specced my cars almost identical. Both had buckets, PCCB, LSD and the GTS was on X73 suspension (the car in the video is on regular PASM, 1cm higher than X73). Buckets are great even as a daily 😉 The biggest difference in usability is actually the front overhang. GT4 is 2cm lower than the car you had and the splitter sticks out more. That makes it very annoying! But otherwise, usability is similar. Both great road trippers in the alps! Apart from clearing French speed bumps. But I still wouldn't want to daily the GT4. So the GTS provides more fun more of the time. The GT4 however is more a car for special moments in my opinion. As for the LSD, that is also not stock on the GTS. You have to order PTV to get it.
this video really sold me on the GTS over the c7 grand sport. i’m aware the GS will be faster almost all around but the driving experience in the cayman is just unmatched, you truly feel like a race car driver in this thing. the GTS engine has more noise in the cabin and unique musicality as well.
The C7 is insane. Like INSANE. but it's too much. even on a race track it feels absurd to have that performance without a full cage. Cayman is the answer.
I own an SS 1LE. It has a similar issue to the GT4 where it is totally asleep under 90 mph or 1.1g cornering load. Now I am trying to buy a 981 Boxster S.
I have a SS 1LE as well and I do not see that as a liability. I love pushing my 1LE when conditions permit. Just because you have the high capabilities, doesn't mean you need to use them all the time, but the times that you do, it is amazing. I use all 1.15 to 1.2 lateral G holding every time I drive on on/off ramps if traffic allows. I now have a 2022 PDK GT4 on order with a nov. delivery date and can't wait.
Hey Tedward, Just wanted to start off by saying big fan of your content and quality of videos! Keep up the good work! As for the 981 S vs GTS, there are a few reasons why I personally believe the S is often the better answer for most buyers (if you can even find one these days...) - The GTS features alcantara which looks very nice and is considered a premium material; however, it also does not wear well especially when it is on touch-points and surfaces of cars (i.e. the wheel, arm rests, or seats where you frequently rub against the bolstering or backing). If you sweat a lot as well, it is not comfortable to touch and it becomes difficult to clean. - As you corrected yourself in the video, yes, the LSD was an option on any of the 981 trims, but even so, a mid-engined RWD layout car that is as well balanced as the Cayman/Boxster twins, it is not going to matter for most drivers unless you are going to the track and pushing the car at 9/10ths or greater. It will help with power out on corner exit; however, most drivers won't even notice whether or not it is there. MR layouts are inherently weight-balanced well and do not experience as dramatic of weight transfer compared to other powertrain and driveline layouts. - The S is typically SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper. The GTS does have some nice exterior changes, but it is basically the equivalent of buying a (nearly) fully-optioned Cayman/Boxster, but it really is a matter of preference and whether or not you can afford the GTS anyways. Great video and thanks for posting/sharing!
Afaik all of VW group has the 'wrong way round' sequential stick shift. Means you have to push against the acceleration / deceleration forces to change gear: annoying
Not just VW cars, most "normal" consumer cars have it that way. I guess the logic is forward=going faster=upshift and backwards=going slower=downshift. Obviously really counter intuitive for car guys and those used to racing sequential gearboxes.
Can you drive 1990 Chevrolet Caprice please ? The engine sound is an eargasmic experience , the burgundy comfy interior is so good to look at combined with the wooden dashboard oh god, My dad used to own one for 30 years but it got stolen lately & I kinda miss it :(

Those were not launch control. Put it on SPORTS PLUS mode, foot on the brake, hit the accelerator, wait for the "launch control activated" window to show up, and then release the brake. 981s are really great cars. Very happy to own one. The sound is so intoxicating especially with PSE, sports headers and a tune.
Super relevant video for me Buying a car with lower limits that offers more usability on public roads Just bought a WRX limited over an STI Wise words, couldn’t agree more!
GREAT video. I'm looking to make a purchase on one of these and this was truly wonderful to watch. Also, couldn't agree more on the direction of the PDK!! I've got a Macan with the same setup and it drives me absolutely nuts. I normally use the paddles, so it isn't much of an issue, but I screw up when using the lever at least once a week.
Great video. Seems like a fun car, but $60k is too much, I’d find an S instead. Same with the 997.2 and 991.1, the GTS premium is huge and not worth it IMO. Agree about the PCCBs, not worth the money unless you are a heavy track user. The carbon buckets are another option that are silly unless you track the car often. They are pretty uncomfortable after sitting in them for 30 minutes or so.
Thank you for the rant about PCCB's. Yeah they're cool and all but it just seems like a "flex" that's not needed. Now you have me looking at Caymans. Haha. Good work dude!
And right now I'm questioning myself if I enjoy the M3 as much as I would enjoy Boxsters I was looking at that time (to be honest I didn't feel strong enough in case of a potential big problem). Who know maybe in the future, fingers crossed!
@@TedwardDrives I wanted to have the M3 really badly (you know that old school poster from the 90s with that Dakar yellow e36 coupe ahah), I knew that I could fix it having worked for the brand in the past and they are pretty reliable for an M motor. Hahah I was watching as you got into the car for you to press the sport exhaust button, then was about to comment ‘why didn’t you turn on the exhaust’, then you pressed it right as I was typing😂 great video, great car🔥
I enjoyed this video very much. Excellent drive, I have a 2000 Boxster S in Peabody, MA. When she comes out of hibernation I would like to see how it stacks up with your GTS. Cheers, Eric
Carbon ceramics are better on the track, but at the same time most people who track often would rather have the steel brakes because of the immense cost. Also I learned something new today. Had no idea the Cayman S was so difficult to find with a LSD. That just seems odd to even think of any model of Porsche not having a proper diff.
I got the base 2.9 cayman as an impulse for a good deal, I regret mmm no, but I wish I could had waited a little for a S or GTS model, thanks for great video.
Had the 981, why you say that you play more with the gears with pdk than manual? For street use and 2/3 track days in a year.. you would get the GT4? I’ve heard you can remap the steering rack of the gts but. I not think will be the same feeling of the GT4….
I think Porsche messed up the orientation on the gearbox in sequential mode on purpose. In the 991.1, they were all pull back to downshift, push up to upshift, with the exception of the GT cars, as the GT3 and 3RS had it the right way round.
I have a 981 gts and test drove the 718 gt4. The 718 pulls a bit harder but omg the sound of the 981 is just so much better. Pretty sure the 981 gts will go down as the best sounding cayman ever made.
Do you have any source about the LSD being standard on 981 GTS? I was under the assumption that was the case with the newer 718/982 but on the 981 GTS, LSD only came with the PTV package. Thanks and great video!
I'm thinking about trading in my F-Type R for something like this eventually(I'm at 52k miles, not sure how long i want to push my out of warranty luck), unfortunately the prices skyrocketed because of Covid. I really should get out and test drive one if i see one for sale in my area(MN) because they look and sound phenomenal. I think I want my next car to be higher on handling and lower on power(unless i stumble into some money and can get a NSX or maybe a R8 V10)
Unfortunately even before covid the 981 gts prices were insane. I bought one back in 2019 and the depreciation curve on these has been super slow. Mostly due to the extremely low production numbers.
I’m not sure if anyone can confirm this but do they have the same PDK unit in these cars? Why does the GTS seem to shift much faster and less lazy than the s and base. Maybe it’s tuned differently from the factor for having the third radiator?
Shame on Porsche for getting the shift direction wrong. Especially since they're sticking with their racing heritage left hand ignition. Still a sweet car and I'd love this for a daily. Sounds so good!
This car probably doesn't have sport suspension. This has PASM. You can tell that from the center console, since it has the little shock absorber button. The sport suspension was non-PASM. (Although I suppose its possible someone replaced PASM with sport suspension.)

Hey Tedward,
Just wanted to start off by saying big fan of your content and quality of videos! Keep up the good work!
As for the 981 S vs GTS, there are a few reasons why I personally believe the S is often the better answer for most buyers (if you can even find one these days...)
- The GTS features alcantara which looks very nice and is considered a premium material; however, it also does not wear well especially when it is on touch-points and surfaces of cars (i.e. the wheel, arm rests, or seats where you frequently rub against the bolstering or backing). If you sweat a lot as well, it is not comfortable to touch and it becomes difficult to clean.

Do you have any source about the LSD being standard on 981 GTS? I was under the assumption that was the case with the newer 718/982 but on the 981 GTS, LSD only came with the PTV package. Thanks and great video!
I could be wrong! But I had always thought it was a given
I was under the impression LSD only came with the PTV package and the PTV package is not standard on the GTS.
What do you think about the GTS 4.0?
I haven’t driven it yet. Very much looking forward to it
I don't know how my last mazda 3 had the correct up/down shift on the lever but not new porsches
0:39 damn... how much oil does this burn
Would love to see a vid on the "new" 718 GTS 4.0 (982)
I’m not sure if anyone can confirm this but do they have the same PDK unit in these cars? Why does the GTS seem to shift much faster and less lazy than the s and base. Maybe it’s tuned differently from the factor for having the third radiator?
Love Your Videos 🔥💯
Thanks!
This really does look like the perfect amount of power for this car, I wouldn't change a thing about it. Thanks for the review.
It also doesn’t have the sports suspension as there is a PASM button on the console
Shame on Porsche for getting the shift direction wrong. Especially since they're sticking with their racing heritage left hand ignition. Still a sweet car and I'd love this for a daily. Sounds so good!
Do you recommend the base 718? My boss would sell me his 2015 Cayman with only about 4k in options for 26k.
Incredible chassis but I never fell in love with the 4cyl turbo. It’s powerful but the sound just ruins it
@@TedwardDrives My alternative would be an as good as new MX5 for 20k. I think I'll go for the Porsche and if I don't like it I'll sell it for more.
@@chuckyfox9284 2015 isn’t a 718, it’s a 981. If you’re looking at a 2015 Cayman for 26k and the mileage isn’t high, that’s a steal.
@@reverbandchill Oh I'm stupid. Yeah it has 60k km and is about 10k beneath the market price.
@@chuckyfox9284 if it’s in sound condition, you’d be insane to buy a Miata for just 6k less. :p
This car probably doesn't have sport suspension. This has PASM. You can tell that from the center console, since it has the little shock absorber button. The sport suspension was non-PASM. (Although I suppose its possible someone replaced PASM with sport suspension.)
From the gauge lcd screen it looks like the launch control prompt did not show up
Is there a light on the steering wheel that says “sport”? I’ve never seen that on a cayman before.
Excellent !😉👍
