    This is a very good video and was very instrumental in me purchasing my GT4. Two notes for those interested:
    1. The sport button is simply an auto blip button. It does not change any of the performance of the car besides the auto blip. The car is always in a sport mode.
    2. The carbon seats I have found to be extremely comfortable and they are all the business. It was a six hour drive home from the Porsche dealership where I bought the car and I had no complaints. However that is personal preference. Others may find the seat a bit uncomfortable.
    As for the fun and sound factor - this video does it great justice. This car is the best car I have ever driven and it sounds absolutely glorious.

      You put it nicely, I agree.
      I see Top Gear as a comedy show that happens to be about cars.
      Here comes Jeremy Clarkson screaming 'POOWEER'
      'IT GOES AROUND A CORNER REALLY FAST' and other things I don't really car car journalism. I don't have a problem with the program, it's just not for me. What does irritate me is that TG spawned a generation of people that like cars, but I can't really talk about cars with them. They still don't know anything technical. That just saddens me.

    I bet my both arms and legs, with shorter gears that thing can fly 0 to 62 in under 4 secs.

    • @ThisIsMTH
      @ThisIsMTH 8 років тому +12

      It would struggle as you'd have to change to 3rd to get to 60, thus negating any benefits gained from the shorter ratios. With longer gearing it'll do the dash in 1st and 2nd. With a PDK, no doubt it would nudge under 4secs, however.

    • @KXP70
      @KXP70 8 років тому +57

      +Matthew Hall You do realise that it can currently reach 82 in second gear right? Therefore having shorter ratios doesnt necessarily mean you'll need to grab third to reach 60.

    • @Squirrelz
      @Squirrelz 8 років тому +27

      +Kurt Phillips Yeap, a shorter 2nd gear to say... 65mph max would be perfect so you would still be in 2nd gear reaching 60 but in the peak power curve.

      @scratchy996 8 років тому +2

      +Leon Kalogeropoulos it sold out almost instantly, it doesn't matter if it poses a danger to the 911 or nor. They just used the gearbox they already had, probably for cost reasons.

    I loved 911's, I still do, but honestly they've changed to the point that they just seem so bla. I think they are getting bigger and it's loosing the appeal that it once had with me. When the Cayman first came out I hated it. Now I really love it because it reminds me of what the 911 used to be.

      Drag racers around the continent are rolling their eyes thinking about how easy it is to spend a few bucks and rehear a transmission to get the exact ratios you want. Porsche has their reasons for doing it but it’s not that hard to cut some gears and slip them in the case.

      @celt67 8 років тому +7

      +wtfdididolastnight Even used ones with 100,000 miles on them start at £12 grand ( for a 2006 model ). And if by 'youngsters' , you mean teenagers....the insurance alone would destroy that dream. No... these things are destined for middle-aged farts with pot bellies and receeding hairlines.

    • @wtfdididolastnight
      @wtfdididolastnight 8 років тому +2

      +Martin Allen I'm 22 and selling cars, one day i'll be that fat Director bloke in his secondhand GT4, but with a shorter gear ratio that is =D

    • @fundiver198
      @fundiver198 8 років тому +7

      +Martin Allen That will be solved soon. The 911 already changed to turbo charging, so the Boxster / Cayman will surely soon follow. However it will probably be 4-cylinder turbos, so the sound will not be as glorious as the naturally aspirated 6-cylinders, we get now.
      Walter Rohrl just bought a Boxster Spyder with the 3,8 liter engine. And I think, that was a clever decision. Because this "last hurra" for the naturally aspirated engines is extremely likely to become a collector item in the future.

      +wtfdididolastnight Just about all good cars these days are stupidly over priced compared to wages. Take the new civic type r for example. When it came out in 2001 the EP3 was 16k brand new. The 2015 type r is 30k. I don't know about you but I'm still waiting for my wage to double what it was in 2001. It's shit working full time and not being able to afford what you want. It's hardly surprising so many people just say fuck it and live on benefits. You still can't buy what you want, but there's no getting your arse out of bed 5 days a week for the privelige.

  • @richfletcher1498
    @richfletcher1498 8 років тому +1

    It's getting better all the time. If you've raced, you know that the chassis configuration (mid engine) is better than rear engine for many reasons. I feel that it looks better than the current 911 series as well. Why is it not better geared? More powerful? Marketing deference to the 911, yes, but also because Porsche want to have room for future upgrades and further interest in the Cayman. They're in the business of maintaining sales year over year. The upgrades will come, as they always have. Well done, Porsche, and XCAR.

    @luminis9708 8 років тому +18

    As much as I love the concept of the GT4, I'd say that Porsche would've done some things differently if they wanted it to truly be the best the Cayman can be. Most notably, stuffing the same 500HP flat six into it the 991 GT3 RS has. That and an optional PDK transmission. Porsche might have upped the level they allow the Cayman to be at, but they're certainly still holding it back to not interfere with the 911...
    Great video, by the way - as usual :D

    • @chrispowers3636
      @chrispowers3636 8 років тому

      +Tobias Bernhardt Porsche claims the 4 liter from the RS won't fit without significant costly redesign and I can see that being possible. However the gear ratios and 15 hp detune of the engine are ridiculous marketing gimmicks to keep 911s ahead of its younger brother. Hopefully someone will realize that there is room in this world for two distinct and equally fast types of Porsches one smaller with two seats and mid engine or one four seats and larger with rear engine. People that like the way a 911 drives don't care about 15 horsepower they care about the rawness and unique handling. Some people like balance. Porsche is making a mockery of themselves with these continued shenanigans.

    • @luminis9708
      @luminis9708 8 років тому

      Chris Powers First time I heard the engine was considered and just didn't fit. Don't know what to make of that, there are shops that offer swapping the 3.8 litre flat sixes into Caymans and Boxters, so I don't know what to make of that statement. Might be true, don't know how the engines compare in terms of size.
      But, yeah, as your said, the detuned engine and the gear ratios are a bit of a hint of Porsche's intentions...

    • @jayman81424
      @jayman81424 8 років тому +1

      I read that the reason the 3.8 in the gt4 is down in hp compared to the 911 was because they had to re design the intake manifold.
      It's possible the 4.0 wouldn't have fit
      However, I do believe that they are still holding the gt4 back.... It seems like it sure as hell needs shorter gears.

    • @matt2m
      @matt2m 8 років тому

      +Jason Ortiz you don't need shorter gears just change out the final drive gear in the differential. That would be a feasible upgrade for this car. I would gear it so it would hit 65 on the top of second gear that would make it a sub 4 second car to 60.

    • @jayman81424
      @jayman81424 8 років тому

      Porsche are great sales men. they did not give it a pdk option because it would have been to quick. So they sell it as a driver's car with a manual, wait it's still too fast so longer gears it is. Bunch of fucking assholes, I prefer manual but there is no reason this car should not have a 0-60 under 4 seconds.

    • @JoeBlo2
      @JoeBlo2 8 років тому

    Great review mate. What a car! I drove an older Cayman S for the first time recently, and have considered selling my restored 1966 912 to buy one. All this talk of having the best top speed is just a pissing contest at the local cafe' in my opinion. It's not how fast you can go in a straight line, but how well you can use the horsepower between the corners as demonstrated in this video. This seems to be nearly the perfect hills blaster. I also prefer the styling of the GT4 to a 911, but thats my personal taste.

    All the sport button does is turn on the auto rev matching feature and that's it.
    A heads up.

    I heard one of these today don't know if he had a custom exhaust or not but I'm thinking it was stock due to its composure but its fucking loud as shit! Anyone have any experience with these? Are they pretty damn loud from factory? I'm not a Porsche guy or At least I wasn't but after seeing and hearing this blue one I saw in Dallas I was like holy shit I'm a Porsche guy now. To be honest I'm not surprised that I like the sound of the stock exhaust if it was in fact that Eisenman makes the factory exhaust for Porsche and AMG and I daily drive a C63 AMG and I absolutely love it so Eisenman has been doing something right for a long time that's for sure

    Applaud Porsche for putting a manual in this instead of the PDK, but it's a shame the gearing is so long. This thing could be a real rocket with shorter gearing, and for something so track focused, its surprising Porsche put such lengthy gearing in it. I have a feeling it might have something to do with encroaching on the 911's territory, but either way, it's kind of a shame. Regardless, still a brilliant car.

    Good video. Good host. Excellent cinematography and great scenery. One noticeable ommision...Alex didn't really expand on the unnecessarily tall gearing that most other reviews gripe about. For a driver's car to have taller gearing than a Corolla is inexcusable.

    It's all about the driving, the feeling of driving fast, or just drivng.
    Lap times mean shit unless you re racing.
    I'd love one of these, of course.
    I could settle for a GT 86 as well.
    Does not matter how fast they are as long as they are built for the enthusiast, the driver in you.

      +Christos Segkounas we both know that's a load, so let's say your GT 86 now has 50 less horsepower, are you still a fan? 80 less? There is room for both speed and handling and the Cayman GT4 and even Cayman GTS are at the intersection of both. The GT 86 is not... sorry.

    no flappy paddles, very nice. have to say i think this would be the porsche i'd buy, even if i had the funds for the gt3.
    little chip tune so the sport button can stay off and not blip for me, muffler bypass and a shorter final drive and it'd be perfect.

    Porsche will never make cayman better than 911 and it's totally understandable and it makes sense! Surprisingly this Cayman GT4 is cheaper than a base 911, given that there are same options applied(you know porsche and their options..). Sorry but Cayman will always going to be Cayman. With that said, I love this thing. So sexy, so driver focused, so porsche.

    Manual boxes are great for the occasional day out or test drive, however for a daily driver i would say that a PDK is a massive plus point
    You could almost count on one hand how many manual box cars Ferrari were selling before they stopped offering them.

    • @Baerzilla
      @Baerzilla 8 років тому +1

      +M3Conv But thats mainly because PDKs make it easier to drive fast/accelerate hard. And people who pay s lot of money for a fast car dont want to be slowed by something as unrelevant as their own driving skills. In my personal expirience a auto-gearbox will always take away a lot of feeling from the way you drive, and I drive cars mainly for the feeling i get, not so much to get the best possible speed or acceleration. A auto just makes me lazy and not enjoy the car as much as i could. Sadly they are dying out.

      I have not had a manual box car for 5 years now and would never go back unless it was for a purely weekend sports car.
      I have a 2012 M3 (they upgraded the DCT software in 2011) and it provides near instantaneous shifts.
      I believe that the PDK in the Porsche and the M4 box are even better, in that case they must be mind blowing good.

    this presenter/ tester had a sit down talk with Porsche, I imagine it went like thiis- don't mention the fact that we can make the Cayman superior than the 911for the simple fact that it is mid-engine, we invested too much on the 911 and don't want to lose big $$$, if you trash the 911 you won't have any more cars lent out to you to present/test!

    Yes Porsche gave Cayman the bigger engine after all the criticism but countered that (fooled everyone) with longer gear ratio so it STILL wouldn't be quicker than 911. A small and agile sports car but with gear ratio fitting a family car :)

    great review! VW has been on a roll for about 5 years now. I am just afraid that their stupid TDI problem will bring this awesome toll that have been on to an abrupt end. Quality will suffer, r&d budgets are gonna get slashed. I can certainly see it coming and unfortunate as it going to be...

  • @chrisgarret3285
    @chrisgarret3285 8 років тому

    Honestly, say what you will but i'd take the Cayman GTS (one you can actually buy...). Less engine yes, but with a PDK just as fast and more of a GT car for everyday. I live outside of the city but the traffic is terrible still and the PDK would help with that. Moreover, I doubt I'd track it more than say once a year so the GT3 suspension upfront and revised suspension in the back would be lost on me. Besides, from everything I hear and see the GTS is excellent in terms of handling as is.

    Not Carrera S Engine!
    A 3.8 l engine is used in the new Cayman GT4. This is based on the 3.4 l
    mid-mounted flat-six engine of the Cayman GTS. Technical innovations,
    which can also be used on the Cayman GTS, make it possible to achieve
    high performance as well as high efficiency
    with low fuel consumption in addition to compliance with emission
    regulations. These include, for example, VarioCam Plus, direct fuel
    injection (Direct Fuel Injection DFI), variable tuning flaps and
    intelligent thermal management.
    The pistons of the Cayman GT4 3.8 liter engine are identical to those of the 991 Carrera S and are made of pressed alloy.
    Like
    the 981 engines, it features: • Two oil extraction points per cylinder
    head • One electrically activated demand-controlled oil pump • One
    baffle plate between crankcase and oil pan
    Transmission type G81/20 No. of gears 6 Spread 3.93 Transmission capacity 420 Nm

      Good observations Re 3.4l flat six engines. I had my 981 Cayman S ecu safely remapped to 364hp, 420Nm, 0-100km/h 3.89sec.
      Hair-trigger throttle response and pulls like the clappers from 3000rpm to redline. The chassis comes alive with the restored power Porsche stole from this 3.4l engine.

    they made this because the new twin turbo base carreras will be faster than before, thereby keeping the 911 on its pedestal.
    the 991.2 carrera s is faster than a 997 gt3 rs.
    the 911 has some undeniable acceleration and grip advantages due to its setup, and driving characteristic advantages over the Cayman also due to its set up, for example, it easier to throttle steer in a corners with the 911 where a Cayman or other mid engine cars would understeer. Over the years they have really honed the ass engine concept and it keeps getting better.

    The new 2017 911 RSR race car announced at the LA Auto Show has gone mid-engine. Kind of hard to argue that a 911's rear engine is superior when even Porsche themselves throw in the towel to try to make the 991 race car competitive with the best sports cars on the market.

    Ok I bought a GT4 myself and I am still breaking it in...I do not live in a busy downtown city and most of my roads are country roads with some twisties...every car I have owned is a manual and unless you have to drive in stop and go traffic everyday, and if you do I feel bad for you, a manual is the more engaging vehicle to drive ...sure lap times are lap times... But if you prefer a paddle shift to a sweetly timed heel toe down shift then maybe you should just give it upand get a tesla or better yet a chauffeur so you actually do not have to drive at all...SAVE THE MANUALS!!!

    If they are smart, some Porsche oriented shop will start working on a package to do a transmission swap to a transmission with shorter gear ratios, or to change the final drive gear ratio to increase the GT4's acceleration... Second gear topping out at 82 mph or so sounds a bit silly to me... If 2nd topped out at about 62-65 mph, it'd be more on the money... I'm sure there are people out there who'd sacrifice a little top end speed (who is going to be driving this thing all the way to 180+ mph very often?) for quicker acceleration.
