The hubris of this man to sit on that stage and say these things is utterly despicable. The binary of Good vs. Bad in a sport where EVERY mofo is on something is insane.
Ben Johnson said after the race one of Lewis’s people handed him a beer He said the beer was spiked with steroids and that’s why he was caught He admitted to doing steroids but said the stuff he got caught with wasn’t what he was taking
Not the Brazilian runner or Calvin Smith. All the others were caught at some point. Those two runners also never win big races ever after those Olympics
The truth was Dr. Jamie Aspthan who provided the steriods to the Canadian sprinters, and who was handling Johnson before the games, lied to Ben about the injections he was getting from him. So that is why Ben ended up testing positive. They didn't stop the drugs in time to have a clear test at the games. It all came out at the 'Dubin Inquiry".
Johnson was a scapegoat, asteroids were common in many athletes, many more tested positive; from the final in Seoul 88, six runners had incidents with positives in their professional life. The Americans and Lewis had a lot of weight in the athletics association, they could not let the opportunity pass. This does not mean that Ben ran legally.
Carl was a great talent. Unfortunately, he was not a very likeable athlete. He just didn't translate to the fans. Just want to clarify the newspaper article shown about the Johnson Inquiry, it was called the "Dubin Inquiry", not the Johnson Inquiry ! W5 Canada, did an expose on the LA and how 4 top Olympic officals decided to keep the secret that 34 American athletes tested positive at the games. The results were in the safe of an US OC official, and they ended up disappearing. There is a document with the signatures. This Expose used to be on youtube.
This is 36 years ago and he's still crying the blues. He was whining back then and still doing it, GET OVER IT! How many athletes back then and how many athletes now are still using band substances? Doesn't make it right, the science of masking is better now than it was 36 years ago. For Ben's one mistake when he was 26 years old, Carl is reminding the world 36 years later. I worked at a gym in NewMarket Ontario Canada where Ben did his strength training after he returned to "normal life" and he was never the same after all the ridicule he took from that one incident. He was stripped of all the medals he won prior. How does the athletic commission know that he was doping prior to the 88 Olympics. The pressure he must have felt to beat Carl must have been immense.
Track and Field was like Cycling.... Ben won the race... the fastest doped guy among all the other doped guys... Same with Lance... a legend... doped winner in a field of doped contenders
Ben was not only the faster runner, he was also the better man and still is. While Carl as up today is still a loser I have so much respect for Ben, a kind, honest and good man. Regards from a Dutch ex sporter, I wish Ben the best.
LOL he, Christie, Smith were all doped to the gills. Ben was just the one they chose to make an example of. And trust me I am no Ben Johnson fan, but I am not blind to reality. Victor Conte put it best, nobody who made the semis of any sprint event didn't dope back then. For the record I believe Usian Bolt dopes too and I don't care since so do all his competitors (for instance his 4 biggest career rivals- Gatlin, Gay, Powell, Blake all failed multiple doping tests) and he dominated them all over both 100 and 200 for so long like nobody in history. Atleast he isn't a hypocrite about it either, calling out any of his rivals who failed drug tests, while being a massive doper themselves sitting on their emperor with no clothes high horse (nudge nudge Carl Lewis).
As a doctor I can tell that anyone that has braces on his/her teeth indicates that they are using steroids as it will separate the teeth, hence is why he wore a retainer
At the end he seems to say that if the sport is completely clean, the times in the 100 would be 11 flat. Pretty well admitting his guilt and the guilt of all the top guys.
Back then yes. It qas the Cold War and we all knew the Russian and East Germans etc were all on it heavily. So to compete people turned a blind eye in a lot of ways and pretended we were all clean and they weren’t.
yep, so given that Johnson was somehow the ONLY track athlete IN THE WORLD that 'tested positive' at that olympics, there should have just been NO gold medal. Should have been Lewis with a silver, Christie bronze. No gold, cuz they were all dirty, and got their dirty asses kicked. You don't deserve a gold for that imo
Back then it was rumors and more rumors of track and field athletes testing positive but no actual prof. False accusations that really hurt the sport....
To be fair, antidoping in 1988 is not the same as in 2024. Without going into a lot of details, in 1988 only 2 types of doping were clear and that was anabolic steroids for speed and power events and blood doping/epo for endurance events. If the IOC busted every athlete who tested positive for banned substances other than steroids and epo, I estimate that over 50 percent of the Olympic athletes would have been sent home. Most stimulants at that time were added to the ban list in 1988 only a couple months before the Olympics Games. At that time, stimulants were everywhere, in supplements and many over-the-counter medicines. In 1988, Carl and several other USA athletes tested positive at the U.S. Olympic Trials, but stated their stimulant usage was inadvertent. It is a fair debate whether Carl knowingly took stimulants; however, 2 important things to know are, Carl was tested at the Olympics and did not compete with stimulants in his system at the 1988 Olympics. In terms of performance enhancing, stimulants are a world of difference from anabolic steroids usage. And in the case of Ben Johnson, testing was so crude back then that if he had stopped doping a week before the games, he probably would not have been caught, but he was literally doping the day before his race. - Not saying Carl is completely innocent but the Ben Johnson comparison is not fair.
Johnson did stop taking steriods before the games, he wasn't taking the substance he tested positive for, and it was in a form that is broken down inside the body in hours. He was taking steriods, but he was also stitched up.
@@HamishGarland Yup he had unmetabolized steroids in his urine sample. It was clear grounds for a dismissal but the IOC found a work around and said that his endocrine profile showed evidence of long term steroid use. After the games were over an American official leaked the information that over 70% of athletes tested had similar endocrine profiles.
I wanted to talk about how great of an athlete he was and how we all rooted for him so many years etc...but all I can say is how come after so many decades he still dont have one wrinkle and looks so young still !!!!!! Wasn't Carl also doped?
Carl Lewis , in my opinion is the greatest Track and Field athlete ever BUT Ben Johnson beat him on a level playing field that day- I don’t believe Carl is being honest at all and there were many positive tests to prove that. Nobody can dispute his greatness - easily the best Long Jumper the world has ever seen- if he was competing right now in his prime, he would never be beaten.
Fact: what was in Ben’s blood wasn’t in Carl’s blood. You can fail a drug test for many reasons (OTC and prescription meds have substances that are banned). Carl was positive for a cough medication. Was he faking his respiratory illness in the pursuit of an edge? You’re free to believe yes. Was the edge from the cough meds as effective as Ben’s doping program? Not even close.
I've remember watching this race live on TV that Friday night in September, 1988. I had video taped this race and could always quote his call, word for word.
Meanwhile, Flo Jo is still credited with winning a gold medal and holding the world records in the 100m from that same 1988 Olympics. Even a blind man could see that she was juiced to the gills.
Wade Exum, former head of the United States anti-doping programme, has alleged that the man voted the greatest athlete of the 20th century was among more than 100 competitors, including 19 Olympic medallists, involved in a cover-up of drug use from 1988 to 2000. Exum claims Lewis tested positive for stimulants during the 1988 US Olympic trials but had a 12-week suspension overturned by the United States Olympic Committee, allowing him two months later to win two gold medals in Seoul.
It was predestined that the media want Carl to win Gold nobody was talking about Ben that's why Ben had that Tupac attitude it's him against the World that's also why he was belingerent in shaking Carl hand most of the track runners were on steroids including Carl but they chose Ben because the media had and wanted to win so what do they do knowing Carl was using steroids to turned a blind eye accused Ben of being on steroids and give the Gold medal to Carl who was on steroids in less than a day how hypocritical and a bunch of B.S. is that point blank period
The highest level of the stimulants Lewis recorded was 6 ppm, which was regarded as a positive test in 1988 but is now regarded as negative test. The acceptable level has been raised to ten parts per million for ephedrine and twenty-five parts per million for other substances. According to the IOC rules at the time, positive tests with levels lower than 10 ppm were cause of further investigation but not immediate ban. Neal Benowitz, a professor of medicine at UC San Francisco who is an expert on ephedrine and other stimulants, agreed in 2003 that "These [levels] are what you'd see from someone taking cold or allergy medicines and are unlikely to have any effect on performance."
All this talk about Lewis being dirty too. To put this in perspective..he took a banned stimulant which is not a steroid. Also..the level of stimulant he took is legal today. So I would say he's not nearly as guilty as Ben Johnson.
We can ignore that one incident but Carl likely took steroids in college like many athletes did in the 70's and 80's. He went into college a great, and scrawny, natural long jumper and above average sprinter, to a muscular elite sprinter in one season. Charlie Francis was basically friends with him before Ben became his rival, and Charlie witnessed his transformation where he put on maybe 20 pounds of visible muscle and turned into one of the US's top sprinters in less than a year. That was 1979, 1980, so before Ben tried any steroids in late 1981. Natural bodybuilders can manage 10 pounds of muscle growth, maybe a little more, in their first year or 2 of serious consistent training but 20 pounds of muscle in less than a year is not something natural athletes can achieve. So many athletes were on drugs during that time period that at one meet in the US, the organizers decided to ignore all the failed drug tests because the names of the athletes were so big and so many tested that positive that fans would stop watching the sport if they were banned. After Ben and Angela Issajenko told the truth about their drug use, the IOC and Canada's athletic governing body stated that any athlete that came forward would be penalized for admitting steroid use. This essentially told everyone else to keep lying and then they'd be OK. East Germany, the Soviet Union, and the U.S. were given the authority to govern and test their athletes as they pleased and would have to go out of their way to sacrifice their own athletes in order for anyone to be caught and suspended. None of those countries were doing that and protected their athletes at all costs and their national testing was used solely so they knew which athletes were clean enough to go to competition and test negative. Athletes who tested positive by their country would simply claim injury and sit out the competition. These big federations were heavily funded and highly organized and would do anything to produce the top athletes in the world, including administering anabolic steroids. 5mg of Dianabol per day was the recommended dosage and drug of choice from the late 60's until the early 80's. Winstrol came later but Dianabol was the first commercial anabolic steroid on the market, developed by a doctor specifically for American athletes in the late 1950's. Germany was the first to isolate testosterone, back in 1935, and give it to their athletes to win the 1936 Berlin Olympics (which they did, they only lost a few events mainly to Jesse Owens).
Failed three drugs tests Carl Lewis, the American track and field athlete, failed three drugs tests at the 1988 US Olympic trials1. He tested positive for pseudoephedrine, ephedrine, and phenylpropanolamine2. However, he avoided a ban after the US Olympic Committee accepted his explanation that he must have consumed the substances inadvertently2. Lewis admitted to testing positive for banned substances but claimed that he was just one of “hundreds” of American athletes who were allowed to escape bans3.

Carl you know the truth about doping
In high level sports you have to use enhancing substances because you are compelled to. If everyone is using them, then the playfield is leveled.
For that reason, Ben's win is still legendary. His explosive start and his awesome power physique was delightful to watch. The rest was just politics within the sport.
1988 olympics was the roid olympics. Flo jo was juiced to the max too.
But am I the only one turned on by her husky man voice and muscles? I sort of felt like her clit would poke my eye out or choke me
Flo Jo was never juiced and I was never a fan of hers but so many people use to hear that about her.So I decided to watch tapes of her winning her races and I could clearly notice that she was not fast because of juice she was fast because for a female sprinter she had a different running style she had longer legs than other female sprinters and when she ran she had longer strides than the other female sprinters. She ate up the yards with those long strides much faster than the other females

The hubris of this man to sit on that stage and say these things is utterly despicable.
The binary of Good vs. Bad in a sport where EVERY mofo is on something is insane.
Ben Johnson said after the race one of Lewis’s people handed him a beer
He said the beer was spiked with steroids and that’s why he was caught
He admitted to doing steroids but said the stuff he got caught with wasn’t what he was taking
The entire field ended up testing positive either then or not long after.
Johnson got pinged because he was Canadian.
Not the Brazilian runner or Calvin Smith. All the others were caught at some point. Those two runners also never win big races ever after those Olympics
@ren17x50 Really we going with that 🙄. If you think one of them was clean in that race U slower then a clean sprinter.
And the dosage in his system would have had to have been taken within 24 hours. Ben was clean of roids 35 days before the Olympics.
This can't be recent/real!!! This interview has to be a joke considering all we know about that time now. I must be in the simulation.
I knew that large hadron collider was a bad idea.
Some big companies wanted him to win!
Carl was also on the juice

This comment should be pinned.

Sh#t reporting . Carl and all the rest were dirty.
Dan Patrick refuses to call out Lewis for failing drug tests. This is a disgusting interview.

All this talk about Lewis being dirty too. To put this in perspective..he took a banned stimulant which is not a steroid. Also..the level of stimulant he took is legal today. So I would say he's not nearly as guilty as Ben Johnson.
Your post is the only one worth reading regarding the issue.
Carl injected himself with steroids I saw him do it. Questions are free i will answer.
Did you say he took it? Then what's your point? He TOOK IT
@@markfoga Mt Point is that it wasn't much of an advantage over the those who didn't. Steroids are a huge advantage.
Failed three drugs tests
Carl Lewis, the American track and field athlete, failed three drugs tests at the 1988 US Olympic trials1.
Lets remember that in 88, there was no out of competition drug testing.
