She admitted her wrongs after she got caught. What the article doesn't mention is that her teammates on the relay teams also lost their medals, and had to return the money they received from competing and placing. So, she effectively screwed them all over too. Jones was selfish, a cheater, and dishonest, and people who trusted her got hurt.

      Scarcely
      1. She never returned the prize money, she obtained by cheating, which would be worth well over a million $ today.
      2. The judge wanted to give her at least 2 years prison : this is shown by her suspended sentence. She was involved in a multi-million $ cheque fraud scheme.
      3. She never admitted doping : she was forced to admit to dishonesty, meaning cheque fraud, on the steps of the court, which the journalists surrounding her misinterpreted as meaning doping.
      4. She was associated with CJ Hunter from age 16 : she needed Johnnie Cochran of OJ Simpson fame, to get her off a lifetime ban for doping as a teenager : she served a 4 year ban.
      5. Given her poor performance at cross fit, and her teenage dominance, the suspicion is, she was doping from age 12.
(Her high school coach, was known to be a coach of Evelyn Ashford, the 10.7 second world record holder before Flo Jo. Evelyn Ashford sported a moustache. )
      6. And as has been pointed out elsewhere, she cheated multiple others, in a blatant fashion, of their due medals, advertising revenue, Diamond League prizes, and also spread doping.
      7. It is also unknown whether she was a drug dealer : athletes have been tested as positive for THG, CLEAR, from BALCO, and the route is unknown.
      8. She may yet suffer her due : all the drugs she is known to have taken are likely to have side effects such osteoporosis, heart problems : the most common symptom of a heart attack is death (50%), and other health issues.

      To list what happened
      1. Jones is not allowed to compete in IAAF events because she has NOT returned the prize money she won by cheating.
      2. Jones proved she was NOT a true elite in the 2001 World Championships final : when under pressure due to a competitor getting a tiny jump on her, her form collapsed due to the pressure despite looking like she had been jogging afterwards, yet her competitor held her form the whole way despite collapsing afterwards, showing her competitor was a true elite.
      3. Jones received prison time due to NOT taking legal advice. The cheque fraud put her in a dubious position : I remember a reporter showing her a cheque for $ thousands, I forget the exact amount, this appeared on TV over 40 years ago now, probably 25 or 43 thousand, and she appeared very nervous.
(She started a think first campaign after this experience. )
      4. Jones period of solitary confinement ensured she wouldn't be a repeat offender. She showed the impulsive behavior typical of a repeat offender, which would have activated her 2 year suspended sentence.
Overall she got off very lightly. The judge wanted to give her 2 years, but due to the prosecution offering immediate release to 6 months as his options, he could only give her 2 years suspended. NO ordinary citizen would have received such light treatment.

Her form was poor, and lacked the will a true elite displays.
Due to THG being undetectable by the methods used in the 2000 Sydney Olympics she was on the maximum dose, her body could stand, throughout competition. Even given advantages of the better tracks in 2000 and maximum doping, MJ could not match a performance, 10.49 100m, Flo Jo considered disappointing : in an interview immediately after, Flo Jo stated she had run faster, and wanted to run faster in the future.

It truly amazes me that Marion Jones was the only professional athlete to go to prison because of her performance enhancement drug use. There were quiet afew high profile professional athlete‘s ( Roger Clemens, Alex Rodriguez, Barry Bonds, Jose Caseco and others ); who were involved in the BALCO scandal and nothing happened to them. Anyway! Im glad to know that Marion Jones have moved on with her life and doing well. She is a great role model, obviously not regarding drug taking in sport - but in coming clean with it , admitting it and reinventing herself to live a better and more spiritual life of being truthful to yourself and others. Thats far more that can be said of many, many others not just in sport but in business as well particularly those in finance and commerce.

    My opinion:
For when I started hearing about the rumors and allegations that Marion Jones was taking performance enhancing drugs, I was giving her the benefits of the doubt. I stopped feeling sorry for her when I began to notice the pattern of her promoting a drug-free image only to end-up getting caught...with drugs herself. It was then that I realized she wasn't taking drugs by accident. She was doing it by her own free-will. I can appreciate her admitting to it, but she shot her credibility to hell. That's mainly why she retired from track and from sports in-general. I suspect the pressure of having to win is what drove her to cheat.

The evidence suggests MJ was a doper from age 12. Her school coaches, who were associated with other well known dopers, her teen ban for doping, reduced from life to 4 years, with the help of Johnnie Cochran of OJ Simpson fame, and sudden improvement in form, from a deadbeat to Olympian, as soon as the ban was lifted.
She was forced to retire from track, all IAAF events, because she didn't return the prize money she obtained by cheating, worth well over million $ today. Her every action can be accounted for, by a desire for $.

    • @michaeledwards2251
      @michaeledwards2251 6 місяців тому

Marion Jones didn't retire, she simply refused to return the IAAF prize money, which adjusted for inflation would be worth millions $ today, she obtained by cheating. Until she does so, she cannot compete in IAAF events.
Her cheating had only 1 motive : $. She dumped CJ Hunter as soon as he was a liability to her advertising revenue.
She needed a calendar to keep track of the 4 drugs she was getting from BALCO : THG, CLEAR, Testosterone and HGH, CREAM, insulin and EPO for recovery.
Team US had to know she was a cheat : form, she got a life time ban for doping as a teen reduced to only 4 years with the help of Johnnie Cochran of OJ Simpson fame, and her transition from deadbeat to better than Olympic standard.
(Her ban as a teen was international news, I heard it on the radio in the United Kingdom. )
The reason you think MJ confessed to taking drugs is her confession on the court house steps after her conviction of "Being Dishonest", meaning cheque fraud. The journalists surrounding her were confused by the legalistic use of language into thinking she had confessed to doping.

My two kids graduated from the same high school about 5 years ago, Rio Mesa, that she attended in her youth. There isn't a single picture of her anywhere there. It is so sad. I think she deserves a third chance even, and should be invited back to all the places where she's made contributions and tell her story. I think the kids will understand, I really do. They know, especially as teens, just how tempting it is to take the bait; even when you are already so gifted and talented. I understand why she lost everything; she cheated. I don't understand how she ended up in jail. There are literally hundreds, if not thousands, of olympic and other high-stakes professional athletes that have done as much, and often much worse, and have suffered little.
