Carl was a superhero to us growing up... ❤

Carl, this was great to listen to. I'm that Iowa coach who came to your long jump clinic a few years ago. I'm still coaching long jumpers in Iowa and I enjoyed getting the chance to be at your clinic and getting to meet and talk to you and LeRoy. Folks, he is a down to earth great guy and one of the greatest people I've ever meet. Still hope someday you'll come present at the Iowa Track coaches clinic. I feel so privileged that I got to meet the greatest athlete of our time. Thanks for doing this interview so kids know even you had to work hard to achieve that greatness. Glad you also told kids to go out for multiple sports to be a better all around athlete in the long run. Take care, Carl.
My husband and I went to high school with Carl, Cleve and Carol. His mother was my gym teacher. They were an iconic family and very well respected at John F. Kennedy High School in Willingboro. Local boys and girl made good with two amazing parents.
I grew up in Willingboro (Hawthorne Park) and Carl Lewis was an absolute legend.
Funny story. In 2014 i was at the NCAA indoor track championships in NM and Carl Lewis walked right up to an open seating area. The usher was on her way to throw him out when a chorus of "do you know who that is" erupted around her. He flashed his credentials and she let him stay. But after a few people pulled up their phones and showed her 'who' this man was ... she was embarrassed. Poor lady was likely wasn't a US citizen when Carl was the face of track and field.
Carl saw her embarrassment and hugged her (she was almost in tears by this time). I still have a pic of the two together. Carl was a class act.
Class act indeed.
Thanks for sharing. Awesome story
P0❤I❤😮😮😮
It's crazy that Carl Lewis won a gold medal in 1996. Because I remember watching him when I was a kid in 1984. Then the next year I competed in my first track meet, in the long jump. Then I competed through high school and in college, graduating in 1995. So, in late 1995 I was working a regular job. My track days were over. Carl Lewis, who inspired me to go to my first track meet as a child was somehow still winning Olympic gold medals while I was retired from track and working in an office. That's insane.
He’s a rare gem 💎
@@yvonneshelton2505 truly!
Pure class.... the guy was so consistent for so long at a world class level, incredible.
He gave my 10 yr. Old daughter long jump tips at the Hershey Youth Track Meet… what a thrill and what a kind man !
I had the privilege of watching Carl run in the 84 Olympics in LA when I was a freshman in high school. My dad was a former Olympian and took my brother and I to those LA games.
Carl Lewis is unquestionably one of the greatest Olympic track and field athletes in history. Coach Tom Tellez is an incredible athletic technician in the Russian definition of athletics! I am so incredibly happy for your success coach; authentic jumping greatness is on the ground!
He was so exciting and clutch for so long
👑 King Carl 🐐. I’m 52 years old and still sprinting and long jumping in homage of him.
I'm 62 trying to get back on the track and compete in the Masters. Good for you!
@@leonardodalongislandgo for it! I ran my first outdoor Nationals 2023 medaled in 5 events 🥇 🥇 🥉 🥉🥉.
Carl, remember cheering you on, always thought the way you ran was beautiful. You made your country proud with humble confidence!
I clicked immediately. What a legend ❤
It waS so much fun watching the great ones...and he was the greatest track and field athlete of his generation
Carl's mother was my 10th grade homeroom teacher. Great, ambitions, successful Willingboro family!
Carl Lewis, This guy was my Volt of power, i was a kid when i saw one of his runs, then i start running 28 KM every Saturday. This guy should never be forgotten...
Back then people could seat all day waiting for the 100 m and jubilee because Carl Lewis has brought so much joys ❤
I always loved watching him compete, he was incredible.
Carl lewis is the Best ,The King of Sprint
EXCELLENT Interview. HE WAS TRACK AND FIELD KIDS.
He was the biggest star in the world. Kids now days could never really believe that kids who did not even run track had posters on their wall of this man. I'm talking white, black and every other color loved him
I’m one of those white dudes
Even as well publicized as he was, he was STILL criminally underrated and under marketed
Back then colour didn’t factor in. It never occurred to me. He had the smoothest run. He won the greatest sprint ever.
He had swag for sure… cool mf
I also fall into that group. I was a white kid who idolized Carl growing up, and it never even occurred to me that he was black.
I mean, who gives a shit? That man worked his ass off and made our country proud. Dude was a bad motherfucker.
🤔 Here in the UK we remember Lewis and Linford Christie having a little rivalry... And who can forget the Ben Johnson situation...
I am 80’s baby’s Carl and mJ were my hero’s - and so I became a d1 athlete at 43 I am still competing. I’ll be in Boston, LA , and Chicago this spring/summer doing what I love to do 🖤🖤
I'm listening to this twice,
Carl Lewis was an icon when I grew up.
Everyone I knew followed everything he did.
Listening to him, I see all the personal quality and love his attitude and ability to see all people with understanding.
Carl if you're reading this, I want to hear more from you in interviews and learn how you have done life.
I'm 46 and have taken on your views on goals, I journal and will journal for the rest of my life
Great seeing one of my childhood heroes and how he's doing in these current times. I had his poster on my 'Bedroom Wall' back in the 80's alongside Michael Jackson! Time and age looks no different for some people; I can see he's looking after
himself very well!!!😊
I grow up in Philaphia PA in the 80's and 90's Carls Lewis is a Legend in my City..... He grow a cross the bridge in South Jersey
Great interview, forever a fan of King Carl!
If Carl was born a coursing greyhound, hares would've be on the endangered list halfway through the eighties. He had blistering pace, he could long-jump like a deer and he possessed the 'prey-drive' of a bull shark. As an mid-twenties Brit, I was in awe of him; as mid-sixties Brit I still am. What a priviledge to listen to the Great man. What a superb interviewee. Outstanding!
I remember the first treadmill I brought was a Carl Lewis treadmill.. 👍🏽
One of my all time favorite athletes
Great interview💯💪🏽👈thanks for all the memories
A lot of questions not asked but still one of the best athletes in the world.
As a kid growing up in small town USA back then. My friends and cousins were all glued to the footage of Carl Lewis and all the other US. Olympic athletes. It was amazing to watch.
We were all proud to be Americans.
I grew up in a small town in in the USA and my friends and cousins were all glued to the footage of Carl Lewis and all the other US Olympic athletes. WOW, what a coincidence

Carl Lewis is the reason I watch the Olympics
Yep, Carl was and is an Icon. Im 71 and he was a hero to me.
Loved watching Carl. Love listening to him. Very talented man. 🌏❤️
Carl looks great. Man, he ran a clinic in every 100-meter race I saw him run. He executed impeccable upright (bicycle) form. He ran like a gazelle. Eric Dickerson ran with the football looking like Carl's form. He wasn't slow out of the blocks, but he was never in a hurry. Carl was beautifully, gradually upright from the blocks about 6 steps out, and accelerated to top speed. (Compared to Ben Johnson's star, who sprang up erect and then charged ahead.) Just like he says, I always thought he hit top speed at 60-70 meters and (seemed to, in my eyes) was able to accelerate out of top speed. Here he says hit top speed and held on. Carl and Eveyln Ashford dominated the 100 meter races for a full decade. Carl was / is The Dude. Mad respect.
Yes I agree with champ it must have been hard work but the great thing it paid off, perfect thanks a lot for your participation
AWESOME interview!!
Oh boy this was so much fun loved this guy was so intrigued by this man devoured his entire career seventy and I remember it all thanks!
Great interview. I never liked this guy, but now I do.
WHO THE HELL CARES? STAY, NOT LIKING HIM; YOU ALL JUST EVIL😈👿
Wow this such a good interview ❤😂🎉 thx
I've always loved the way Carl talks....very articulate
Carl making out he was clean while talking about Ben Johnson was comical.
Back to Jamaica, trump coming for y'all.
@@blessedthanksgiving457Is he coming for Carl?
Lewis tested positive at the US trials and shouldn't have been competing. History has proven the top half of the field was using PEDs. Let's be real if Ben Johnson was American there's zero chance that positive drug test comes to light.
Carl is a comical too pot call kettle black
@@blessedthanksgiving457the prison coming for Trump... Does that makes them even?
Born in 1979, I was too young to remember 84', but I definitely remember 88' and beyond. It's hard to describe just how popular Lewis was. He was definitely up there with the Heavyweight boxing champ,n Michael Jordan, Wayne Gretzky....he was that big.
Carl is an amazing friend. I love you too.
What a great interview. I met Carl Lewis in London UK at crystal palace event during the 1980's
great stuff
I remember going to the Penn Relays every year in Philadelphia, and that was always a unique experience because Carl didn't run at 'Penns' every year, but when he did Ticket Sales were always a few dollars more, and way back before 9/11, you can enter in and out the Stadium at Penns. It was a true carnival, so Carl would walk the streets of Philly, in between races, and you could see the 'Aura' that was around him when he was in your presence. Carl was and still is the man. He was Track and Field for about 2 decades. Remember, he would have won in '80, as well, if we didn't boycott the Olympics that Summer!
I am 59 years today, we still talk about Carl lewis ! 53:30
Carl Lewis looks so good and healthy in this interview! Wow! I met Mr. Lewis once in a small city called Fayetteville about 12 years ago. He was very personable. His career was very admirable!
I got to meet Carl a couple of time at a Best Buddies charity bike ride. He shot the starters gun to get us going. He was very approachable at the after party and he lit up when I asked him about Edwin Moses. Real nice Guy.
I was a HUGE fan of both (even spent a semester at U of H "with" the track team) and consider Carl the King of T&F but as hurdler, Moses was (pun intended) a god-he was the only athlete who I conder "perfect." His races could not have been run better. and! His undefeated streak was the most incredible thing in all of sprts.
I can't believe how good of a sports journalist Dan Patrick is.
The greatest❤❤❤❤❤❤track & field conqueror
Usain Bolt is the greatest 🎯💯
He's a drug cheat... I got one word for you, BALCO
Love this, great interview with the King of the Track!
Great interview, and a superb interviewer!…
What a great guy. T hank you.
My childhood sprint inspiration. 1984 Olympics 100m Men's sprint champion 🔥🔥🔥
An AMAZING HUMAN BEING. Truly a very very Genuine, Nice, Good person on ALL LEVELS. As Beautiful, Good and Great he was in sports he is equally Beautiful, Good and Great as a true human being. THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR EVERYTHING 💖 🙏🏼 LOVE ALWAYS ❤️ ❤
Grew up in this same town Carl and Carol are from both were great athletes and there parents did a fantastic job building up the Willingboro track club.
I love love and loved him when I was young.
❤
Carl's net worth today $20 Million!
No surprise the IAAF named Lewis their athlete of the 20th century.
Carl Lewis promoted the sport of track and field.
The best ever
We first became aware of Carl just after Skeets broke 13. Then I was at U of H in 1980 as an unofficial "member" of the track team. Off the track, we were big partiers-usually at someone's house but one night I danced the evening away with Carol in a club called Popcorn(s) in Houston. Watching Carl on the track was very inspiring (as a runner-and as a human). He (and Jessie) is the true King of T&F.
I do admire Carl ever since, back that time i remember, his my favourite track and field superstar, from New Guinea just north of Australia
Great athlete
Carl Lewis became an adjective he was so good. Like Xerox. Anytime speed was mentioned, or someone was fast, Carl’s name was invoked
Whenever Carl Lewis name was invoked, I remember BALCO and those enhancement drugs, almost bringing the sport into disrepute... Carl Lewis can deny it all he wants he was caught cheating and it was covered up by the USA... Even his teammates said that he was on drugs... He gets absolutely no respect, he's a cheater.
Uhhhhh NO 🙄

Usain Bolt is just a natural talent,Second to none.
Yes, and actually trained VERY hard. And well coached in youth.
He had good parents that’s so important
Legend and sound so mature @23...
Arguably the greatest athlete of all time.
lol cuckoo
😂😂😂😂😂😂
Usain Bolt enters the chat…..🤣🫵🏾
Lewis added long jump to his 100, 200 & relay. He equals the most track/field Olympic gold medals with only one other person, at 9. Bolt has 8
Great interview 🙌🏿
BRUH...BACK WHEN I ATTENDED YATES HS...I WOULD WALK ACRISS THE STREET
TO THE UNIVERSTY OF HOUSTON AND SEE CARL LEWIS' PORSCHE. BLACK AND
I BELIEVE GOLD...BRUH..THAT CAR WAS SICK!!!! 👍👍👍
Bruce and Carl, brothers of a different mother and father.
Carl Lewis I can do it so let's go the lap!!!!
Carl 👟🎽👍👍
Great interview! Lewis is one of my all time favorite athletes. T board track athletes in his kind of swag
I remember when Carl Won his 4th LJ Gold medal at the 1996 Olympics near the end of his career the commentator or headlines said “you offer him a him a gold watch and he steals your Gold medal.”
Great interview!!
Goes to show men especially brothers age gracefully just looking at Carl.Actually some men like Carl grow into their looks and look better as Carl does older than when he was much younger.Just wanted to state it but much appreciation for Carl and his accomplishments.
I took econ at the University of TN. Sam Graddy was a classmate. What a great 4x100 team!
How come he don't have a SHOW of some type he is so engaging and has so much perspective to add. Great interview...
❤ G O A T
GOAT? That's funny. He's a 3-time PED drug cheat.. test results were covered up by US track and field officials and he was allowed to run in '88 Seoul Olympics. (Google it) He's the biggest fraud in track and field. His failed test results were made public 15 years afterwards - after expiration of the statues of limitations that enabled him to keep the medals he won
@@tonyleyden431Well said!💯 He’s a cheat and fraud!
Watch the documentary 9.79 if you’re a fan of track or just a Carl Lewis fan. It’s about the Olympic final in the 100 meters at the 1988 Olympics.
54:15 - 😏. In 2003, a great American sprinter and championship long jumper said about his own positive drug test results (plural) and PEDs, "there really is no pure evidence to show that it does something. It does nothing". That man is still the only 4 time Olympic long jump champion.😌
My track and field 🐐. The reason why I ran track
Do you cheat also? Carl sure did
@@dranderson6071

@@joegrinefine Bolt only ran the 100. He can't be track and field goat
Not only an amazing athlete, but he is now an amazing coach. Keep doing your thing. You are building a great team of sprinters in Houston.
Terrific interview!
Patrick knows when to keep quiet = Great interviewer first characteristic. Know it’s not about the interviewer.
Carl..! My meng..!
My Dad took a young Bob Beamon to his track practice. He loved track & field meets and I can remember him saying Carl’s sister was a better athlete.
Before all sports stars it was Carl Lewis.
What a great interview!
Carl Lewis has always been my favorite Olympian. A classic case of "no brag, just fact". Always, always has been a class act.
DP is the greatest
Kids today don’t understand what star power was back then there was Carl Lewis, and there was Edwin Moses you don’t get bigger
If he questioned Bolt's times why didn't he immediately question Flo Jo's insane times in Seoul. She made a massive drop from mediocre in 1984 to men's times in 1988 in both 100m and 200m. Also why didn't he question Michael Johnson's 200m time in Atlanta? Massive drop there too from the previous year(s). Or was it because they were/are American athletes and not subject to the same scrutiny?
My dad went to Tuskegee.
As far as Carl Lewis. ..he could be a great track coach.
He is. University of Houston.
And yet, he isn't. Why is that? Also, his "business" is hardly a going concern.
Well done Carl Lewis. We couldn't wait to watch you.
Good guy, great athlete. Alas, no gravitas.
❤❤
He beat phenomenally talented athletes throughout his career.
He wasn't competing against also rans, his opponents were high level and he still dominated.
