Gary looks like an older version of his mother. Glad he’s happy, well adjusted and doing his thing. I respect the fact he does not wanna do a tell-all type of memoir knocking his dad. That alone shows what a class act he is.
Jerry Lewis was not a well-adjusted man because when he would come home his wife would tell the children to be careful your dad is on his way home. So, they would disappear from not being around to bother his father. His father, Jerry Lewis, would act one way with the audience and at home he become angry and not very kind around the children.

Gary is a far better man than his father ever was. He was treated like crap by his father, yet takes the high road in interviews and doesn't put him down. I could never be so kind as he is with a dad like that. When I found out how Jerry Lewis treated his biological sons, I never watched any of his films again, and never will. He was a bitter, disgusting person.
*CAN YOU IMAGINE A MILLIONARE AND NOT PAYING FOR YOUR OWN SONS FUNERAL. AND NOT CARING ABOUT THE PRESS, ETC. JERRY WAS A BITTER MEAN MAN, WITHOUT DOUBT. BET DEAN MARTIN COULD HAVE TOLD US MANY STORIES, SKELETONS IN THE CLOSET, BUT HE DIDNT*
In the 1960's I was a music columnist for a number of newspapers in the Carolinas'. My interviews with artists included The Mamas & Papas, soul artist's Eddie Floyd , Stevie Wonder and members of the Rat pack to mention just a few. In 1990 I relocated to Florida where I was offered a job with a local newspaper. During that time a local radio station hosted an oldies show fearuring a variity of acts including Gary Lewis and the Playboys whom I interviewed backstage. Mr. Lewis was very honest and willing to share his thoughts on the music business. During that interview One of my questions was: " With all the success of the Beatles and other famous stars how do feel about so much competition." His answer: "There's room for everyone". Gary Lewis came across as one of the most honest and upfront artists of any I've ever had the pleasure to meet.
Gary and his music was the sound of a generation. The mid 1960s were such a great period for America, and for so many Americans. I’m glad I watched this interview because Gary is exactly the way I always imagined he would be. The persona you saw of him with Gary Lewis and the Playboys is pretty much exactly what he is to this day. He’s simply a great American and a very nice guy. I’d love to see him again in concert… if he’s still performing. He always had a smooth and easy style about him, and sang like it was effortless.
Great interview! Great hearing him talk about his life and career. He has such a great and healthy perspective when he could be bitter about many things. Clearly his father was not a good father, and you can see he's uncomfortable speaking about him. But he seems to have perspective about it and the strength to not moan and cry over. Love his songs and nice to see him happy.
@@harveybrownstoneinterviews8980 l wanted to also mention how humble Gary seemed. He gave all credit to Snuff and Leon. And Gary is not alone as far as 60's stars suddenly finding themselves shut out of the studio. It's a tough business and one can quickly find themselves forgotten. But we never forget them and still love hearing their songs 55+ years later!
I have loved and played Gary Lewis's music on the radio for so many years but never really knew too much about him other than his tough relationship with his famous father. This interview was eye opening and my respect for him has grown immensely. I hope that Jerry really did understand what a special person he raised before he passed. His decision not write a "tell-all" book and cash in on the celebrity is so unselfish and a rarity. You can tell it done out of the love and respect that he has for his dad which might not necessarily be warranted! Thanks for the great interview!
This is a phenomenal interview. Thank you so much for this post. I had the pleasure of seeing and talking with Gary and the Playboys after their concert in Cobleskill, New York (upstate). Gary is one of the most personable, down to earth gentlemen I have ever met. He is amazing and so respectful of his fans. Everyone danced and sang and had such a wonderful time at the concert. After the concert he stayed and mingled for a long time. He never rushed anyone through the meet and greet. I think he would have stayed for hours just talking with the fans. He posed for photos, autographed CDs, and was soooooo very nice. I would love to see him in concert again in concert. He is only a few years older. My hometown is only about 30 minutes from the ⚾️ Hall of Fame. Thank you again for posting the interview. Would love to send Gary a note. 👍👍

I enjoyed so much seeing this interview with Gary Lewis. Thank you for posting this with all the memories attached.. I for one loved all their songs and also enjoyed seeing them on the Ed Sullivan show, and other shows as well. I also remember hearing somewhere that Buddy Rich taught Gary Lewis how to play the drums because he knew his mother during her singing years.. i’m also glad that Leon Russell contributed to a lot of their hits . 🙏❤💍🎼🎸🎤
Always a fan of Gary. I saw him perform in Cleveland in the early ‘90s, and it was a great show. I believe he lived in the Cleveland, Ohio area at the time, and I thought that was so cool. Thanks not only for the music, but thanks also for your service and support for our veterans Gary. God bless you!

I have been a fan of Gary Lewis since the 1960's. Saw him twice at the Col Ballroom in Davenport, Iowa, at the James Dean Festival in Fairmount, Indiana & again at the 2013 Happy Together Tour at the Indiana State Fair in 2013. Thanks for the hours of listening pleasure Gary!
Thank you for conducting this interview with Gary....and asking some great questions! I totally understand what Gary is saying about not wanting to relive dark periods of his life (writing a book). Even though it would certainly be of big interest, and may even be of help to those that have gone thru similar situations (addictions, trouble with parents) Gary is the one that has to dig deep to pull up the hurt and pain side of his life to write about it. Not a very pleasant prospect for the next couple of years of his life.....writing the book and then doing the interview circuit about it. From everything I've read about Jerry Lewis and his children, there is a lot of hurt -to- the- bone dysfunction there. I don't blame him for just wanting to remember and focus on what good he had with his Dad.... get on with living in the here and now. Gary is a class act for sure!
@@harveybrownstoneinterviews8980 That's a good man! Jerry Lewis was certainly an enigma. Like I think you mentioned to Gary in your interview, there was a lot of pain in Jerry.

The so called R&R hall of fame is a sham. There's many who they've included that aren't even a rock band and then the great bands like Gary Lewis and the Playboys being overlooked. They have no credibility.
@@harveybrownstoneinterviews8980 Exactly. Dolly Pardon got selected ? Look how many real rock bands that were so influential to shaping the sound haven't been.

I was under 10 when Gary Lewis and the Playboys were popular, and i couldn't help but notice that every song they produced was consistently good. I really enjoyed them. Listening to this interview, Gary said someone told him that his music wasn't wanted in the '70's, because when they suddenly quit putting out records, i was actually looking forward to hearing another recording. But that record producers chose to quit recording Gary's music, just because THEY thought they wouldn't sell. Because Gary Lewis and the Playboys were doing so well, Liberty Records shouldn't have ever stopped. I really enjoyed their music and believe they could have gone farther.
Great interview. Gary's music was very much part of my growing up. I have a 45 from Kellogg's Corn Flakes called "Do the Flake" that I sent away for. It also has "This Diamond Ring" and another song - 3 songs on a 45. Don't think I've ever seen that, ever. I cherish having that record. It has a great paper sleeve, too.
I was a very lucky 12 year old that got an amazing chance to go back stage to meet Gary at a concert in San Diego, in 1965. I was wide eyed & speechless, he was nice, friendly and funny. I could tell he wanted to make it special for me. He took the time to talk and pose with me for photos. Such a great memory to have all these years. So glad I stumbled on this great interview. He sounds like he continues to be the same nice, humble, caring guy.
Wow......great interview. After hearing this, I have a ton of respect for him as a person. I know what it feels like to dedicate your life to being a full time musician, enjoying some success, flying your dad out to come see you play when things were going well and then years later have your father berate you for wasting so much time in " all those crappy bands" when I could have picked a different career. It doesn't fell very good.
What lovely music , & what a great voice such great memories Gary Lewis gave us 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻I think Gary has his fathers voice he sounds a lot like Jerry Lewis ‘s voice when he sang 👏🏻

Boy what a great person when he said he never gets tired of singing the song's from the 1960s because it always brings back happy memories of the 1960s I thought and I am sure he knows he does exactly the same thing with his many fans from that era Great interview bringing out what a humble and classy person Gary is
I have always been very fond of Gary Lewis and the Playboys, and his music. In the late 1970's I would service the pool at his dad's house in Bel-Air. The guard at the gate would have to open the gate for me, and the pool had the lift-o-matic pool covers. I never once saw Jerry, or his family. Gary is such a class act, and a wonderful human being, and loves America, and faithfully served as a vet. Excellent candid interview! Yes absolutely. That being said, this is one of those interviews that reveals more in what was not said, than in what was not. My show seems to be known for that!!
Gary Lewis and the Playboys were so under appreciated during their time. Listening to them now I have a whole new appreciation for their music.
That’s so nice to hear! Thank you so much for watching!
They were all over the radio and everywhere else back then. They were not under appreciated.
@@jimmycain8669 Yes, they were - I listened to them. But they never got the credit that the British bands did. When you go to the rock and roll hall of fame you don't expect to see them.
@jimmycain8669 yes you have a good point.
@rebekkad.2092 well they weren’t part of the British invasion so of course they didn’t get that kind of adulation
Gary Lewis you'll always have a special place in our hearts. If I were your dad, I'd tell you how proud I was of you every day.
Awww that’s a very sweet thing to say. He’ll love that!!
Great music, and timeless, I am 66 and love it all...............
I’m 67 and love it too
My favorite group from the 1960s. Great interview and so glad to know Gary is still performing and living his dream.
Thank you so much for watching our show!
Great interview. After seeing his father over 30 times in 50+ years, I'm finally going to see Gary in Peekskill, NY in November 2023.
I hope you enjoy every moment
Gary Lewis and the Playboys were my absolute favorite band back in the day, with Herman's Hermits coming in a close second.
Thank you so much for watching this very special episode of our show.
I always loved his music back in the 60's. It was upbeat and happy.
I still love those songs
Thank you for your candid interview Gary it’s so great to hear from you. I’m 63 and listened to your music as a kid in the 60s. and thank you all for The wonderful interview !
Thank you so much for watching. I hope you’ll subscribe to our UA-cam channel. 🙏❤️
*I AM TOTALLY IMPRESSED WITH THIS HOST. FIRST TIME LISTENING. HE LETS GARY SPEAK NO INTERRUPTIONS. AND WHEN ASKING GARY ABOUT THE MEMOIRS HE SEES GARY BECAME OUT OF HIS COMFOR ZONE. THEN HARVEY SAYS, WELL IF YOURE NOT INSPIRED THEN YOU SHOULDNT. TAKING GARYS SIDE. WHAT A GREAT MOVE. KUDOS TO THE HOST!*
Thank you so much for your very kind comments. I hope you’ll check out more of our great interviews, and please consider subscribing to our UA-cam channel. 🙏❤️
Well done, Harvey. You asked great questions and then stood back and let Gary tell his story.
That’s the job of a great interviewer, which I aspire to be!
Great that you played Gary’s hits….as a teen I really enjoyed his music.
We like to insert music clips when interviewing music stars
I used to play baseball with him and his friends around 1962..at El Marino pk,I was around 12..they were really
Nice to us kids..later on I became a professional pianist for 60 years
I hope you enjoyed this very special episode of our show. Thank you so much for watching and for your comment
Did you play on records?
@@michaelwray6764 not his records, but I made many recordings of Harlem stride piano and classical music...but that was years later...
Gary is still such talent. Enjoyable & timeless music. Thank you, Gary!!!
Thank you for watching this very special episode of our show!!
Gary Lewis & The Playboys have always been one of my all time favorite groups. I am in my late 60's and still listen to their music. They were the best!
Thank you so much for watching our show
LOVED ALL OF HIS SONGS. STILL LISTEN TO THEM. THANK YOU GARY FOR ALL OF THE WONDERFUL MEMORIES IN YOUR MUSIC.
Thank you so much for watching
I remember them on radio in sixties, I’m 64. Loved them.
I’m 67. Loved them too. And I loved having him on our show.
I always enjoyed listening to this group. They are fantastic!
What did you think of the interview?
Gary Lewis is the best performer for me He is a greatest performer even until now I love His songs and I love His style in singing God bless you all
and God bless you as well.
God bless you too🙏❤️

Thank you so much for your support for our show!!
Thankyou Harvey for posting this and Thankyou Mr. Lewis for this great interview and great music.
You are most welcome. Thank you so much for watching our show
Gary is a far better man than his father ever was. He was treated like crap by his father, yet takes the high road in interviews and doesn't put him down. I could never be so kind as he is with a dad like that. When I found out how Jerry Lewis treated his biological sons, I never watched any of his films again, and never will. He was a bitter, disgusting person.
Jerry Brainum: It's a little more complicated than that, I think
*CAN YOU IMAGINE A MILLIONARE AND NOT PAYING FOR YOUR OWN SONS FUNERAL. AND NOT CARING ABOUT THE PRESS, ETC. JERRY WAS A BITTER MEAN MAN, WITHOUT DOUBT. BET DEAN MARTIN COULD HAVE TOLD US MANY STORIES, SKELETONS IN THE CLOSET, BUT HE DIDNT*
Yes I agree with you.
Jerry is really funny when he acts retarded!
@bernadinetemple yes Jerry had an abusive and neglectful childhood. But he wasn’t a loving and kind parent. I appreciate your compassion. Thank you
In the 1960's I was a music columnist for a number of newspapers in the Carolinas'.
What a career you’ve had! I’m honored you watched our show. Thank you so much!
What a lovely comment. Thank you so much!
Thank you so much for watching our show and for your insightful comments
@@harveybrownstoneinterviews8980 l wanted to also mention how humble Gary seemed. He gave all credit to Snuff and Leon. And Gary is not alone as far as 60's stars suddenly finding themselves shut out of the studio. It's a tough business and one can quickly find themselves forgotten. But we never forget them and still love hearing their songs 55+ years later!
You are clearly a true fan and I can assure you that Gary appreciates it.
Thank you so much for watching our show and for your beautiful heartfelt comments. 🙏❤️
Thank you so much for watching, and for posting your wonderful comments. I hope you’ll check out our other interviews, and that you’ll consider subscribing to our UA-cam channel. I would appreciate it so much!🙏❤️

I grew up with your dad's movies...he was a great actor!! Loved his movies.
I watched his marathons.
I am so sorry what happened between you both.

Thanks for an excellent interview. I have been Gary's fan for decades. All of his songs are great. I'm glad that he is still touring after all of these years.
Thank you so much for watching our show.
Thank you Gary Lewis for your contribution to music. You music brought much happiness to me and many others! In the 1960's when one of your songs came on the radio it was just a joy to listen to. I still love listening to your songs. Love your music!
What did you think of the interview?
I enjoyed so much seeing this interview with Gary Lewis. Thank you for posting this with all the memories attached.. I for one loved all their songs and also enjoyed seeing them on the Ed Sullivan show, and other shows as well. I also remember hearing somewhere that Buddy Rich taught Gary Lewis how to play the drums because he knew his mother during her singing years.. i’m also glad that Leon Russell contributed to a lot of their hits . 🙏❤💍🎼🎸🎤
Thank you so much for watching this very special episode of our show 🙏❤️
Always a fan of Gary. I saw him perform in Cleveland in the early ‘90s, and it was a great show. I believe he lived in the Cleveland, Ohio area at the time, and I thought that was so cool. Thanks not only for the music, but thanks also for your service and support for our veterans Gary. God bless you!

@@harveybrownstoneinterviews8980 I liked it very much. It’s great to see Gary looking great and sharp as a tack.
Loved this terrific interview!!! I’ve loved Gary Lewis and The Playboys since the 60’s, and I just saw the group live for the very first time this past July. Makes me happy to know that Gary is still enjoying singing the songs we’ve loved so much for so long. Many thanks for sharing! 😘

My husband is a Navy Vet and it opened up a lot of doors for him . Country guy met NYC girl me. 57 years together. He oved his time as a soldier. 63- 66.
Thank you so much for honoring our show with your beautiful comment.
Was a pretty good interview even though I wasn't a fan I listened to his records back then. Glad he's still around making music cause that's really what it's all about!! Good luck Gary in the future!
A “pretty good” interview? Gee thanks. Don’t strain yourself
I hope you enjoyed this very special interview with the great Gary Lewis!
I agree with you 100%. Another factor that Gary mentioned to me after we stopped filming, is that he doesn’t want to tarnish his Dad’s public image.
@@harveybrownstoneinterviews8980 That's a good man! Jerry Lewis was certainly an enigma. Like I think you mentioned to Gary in your interview, there was a lot of pain in Jerry.
Yes Jerry was a driven, tormented and unhappy man.
Gary & The Playboys...Knocked The 60's Pop Music Outta The Park And Right Into Our Young Innocent Hearts. Garys Vast List Of Happy Hit Songs...Drove Us Wild.
I got my picture taken with him when he was in Ontario, Canada...back in 1991. I can only hope that, Gary makes a trip up to Canada once again. I thought that, he was pretty good as an voice impressionist as well.
Thank You

Thank you so much for interviewing Gary Lewis. He belongs in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I hope he is inducted soon. It would be a travesty if he isn't.
Thank you so much for watching this very special episode of our show ❤️
The so called R&R hall of fame is a sham. There's many who they've included that aren't even a rock band and then the great bands like Gary Lewis and the Playboys being overlooked. They have no credibility.
@jimdep6542 it’s very political, like everything in show business
@@harveybrownstoneinterviews8980 Exactly. Dolly Pardon got selected ? Look how many real rock bands that were so influential to shaping the sound haven't been.
Yes I agree 100%. I’d like to see Cher inducted.
I love it , Great job interviewing Gary , your awesome and so is your music Gary ...Thanks a ton

Great Interview wonderful questions Gary Lewis is a nice guy and very down to earth.
Thank you so much for watching.
I am glad I got to know Gary Lewis thru this interview. Saying "HI" to an American vet. Loved your songs when I was in grade school. Moved from Nevada, and they played your songs. Moved to Salem as an adult and your songs are on the radio. Moved to Phoenix Arizona, and Portland Oregon, and the radio still rocks with your songs. I dug your sound, not just for sale, but substance.

I agree 100%
Great interview. Gary's music was very much part of my growing up. I have a 45 from Kellogg's Corn Flakes called "Do the Flake" that I sent away for. It also has "This Diamond Ring" and another song - 3 songs on a 45. Don't think I've ever seen that, ever. I cherish having that record. It has a great paper sleeve, too.
That’s so cool
I was a very lucky 12 year old that got an amazing chance to go back stage to meet Gary at a concert in San Diego, in 1965. I was wide eyed & speechless, he was nice, friendly and funny. I could tell he wanted to make it special for me. He took the time to talk and pose with me for photos. Such a great memory to have all these years. So glad I stumbled on this great interview. He sounds like he continues to be the same nice, humble, caring guy.
Thank you so much for sharing that very special experience in your life.
Wow l would of loved to see that ....
Thank you Gary and Harvey
You are very welcome. Thank YOU for watching!!!
Thanks Gary for all of the great music.
Be sure to write to him on his own website. I don’t think our guests read the comments posted on our show’s channel.
Yes, parts of this interview were heartbreaking
Loved Gary Lewis & The Playboys-They had some awesome songs!
What did you think of the interview?
So humble, simple & happy go lucky. He's impressive, rather uncommon nowadays & maybe very much so considering his background. Good vid & t/y !!
Thanks so much for watching
What lovely music , & what a great voice such great memories Gary Lewis gave us 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻I think Gary has his fathers voice he sounds a lot like Jerry Lewis ‘s voice when he sang 👏🏻
Never thought of that till you mentioned it.
I'm a 60s kid. GL's music was so impactful on pop culture. I was happy to hear when you said you never tire of performing your hits.😊
So glad you enjoyed this very special episode of our show. Thanks for watching.
Bought all his music and still sing his songs today !
Loved this! I did not know much about Gary Lewis till revisiting Jerry Lewis shows movies etc. I really like Gary very natural pleasant and a marvelous singer. I do remember Jerry Lewis having his Son on his program The Jerry Lewis Show, and also praising him on numerous occasion on MDA he performed also. I was a great admirer of the Very great Jerry Lewis who had a very difficult life.
Jerry Lewis was also a great singer his Rock A bye your baby is fantastic as are many of the other songs he recorded.. Jerry Lewis had a great musical talent. What a charming man Gary is.
I’m thrilled that you enjoyed this very popular episode of our show
Some of my most favorite songs!!!💗
Mine too!
Boy what a great person when he said he never gets tired of singing the song's from the 1960s because it always brings back happy memories of the 1960s I thought and I am sure he knows he does exactly the same thing with his many fans from that era Great interview bringing out what a humble and classy person Gary is
Thank you so much for watching
Loved Gary Lewis and the Playboys
Count Me In is my favorite, it captured his "persona" perfectly!
Yes! So true!!
What a great guy - still loving: love your songs!
Love him so much!
I still greatly enjoy listening to his happy upbeat music, and greatly admire his talent in his own right.
Thank you so much for watching our show, and for sharing your memories with us.
love the songs - I first heard Gary Lewis in the 1970's on my brother's 8 track cassette player, timeless songs

Harvey,
I just ran into this reviewing what an insight. This really takes me back to that period. I had just started high school and remember all of his music. Gary was a big part of the musical fabric back then. It was a formative time and it produced such lasting music. I think that you have captured the essence of Gary's career and personal life. Thank you for this interview. Gary truly seems like a great guy and very grounded. This is a very good slice of life...thank you, once again...
