Kuddos to his mother, Patti, for raising a NORMAL, centered, humble son amongst what must have been the chaos of being Jerry Lewis' first born son - could not have been easy!!
Sat next to Gary on a flight from LA to Chicago many years ago . We talked about his early career , his years in the service , and the trouble he had trying to reclaim his spot in the music industry . What a nice , humble , entertaining guy . Shook hands with him , wished him luck , and he THANKED ME for the conversation . A true gentleman .
To have been born into Hollywood royalty, Mr Gary Lewis is so humble, down to earth. I don’t need to mention how talented and gifted he is. I wish, I’d seen Gary and The Playboys in person. Wow, 7 years of drum lessons from Buddy Rich? It doesn’t get much better than that.
Met Gary on the Oldies Cruise Nov 2013 and talked to him every day. Great performances. One day he was doing a 45 min gig with Jerry Blavat. They hot up changed seats and Gary started to drink from Blavat’s clear glass with liquid in it. I knew it was straight vodka and I knew of Gary’s ex alcoholism so I yelled “ it’s Vodka” just as Gary was about to drink the “ water”. He had a tad but immediately spit it out. Next day I met him and told him it was me that yelled. He gave me a big bear hug of thanks. Could have set him off so I felt good. Saw him in Niagara Falls USA in 2019 ? and after when he was signing his merchandise I lined up and waited to talk to him behind the table. Told him “ hi it’s me who yelled ITS VODKA and he got up and hugged me across the table. His 2 other band members shook my hands. Was a very important moment for them as a group. I felt good. True story. Paul from Toronto Canada Nov 2023. Am 77
I am 63 years old.....the 1st piece of vinyl I ever bought it was This Diamond Ring...at a department store near the house. I was raised around jazz since I was 7 yrs old....it was in my blood.....I wish Gary the very best......now and always
Gary Lewis & the Playboys had so many great songs.. that are now Classics...good for them... this was a great interview.. very entertaining and well done.. thank you
I'm almost 64 years old and I remember being a 5 year old loudly singing "Diamond Ring" in public. BTW, Gary Lewis looks younger than I do even though he is significantly older. What a cool guy. 👍
This was a great interview. I had the pleasure of meeting Gary and the Playboys after their performance here in upstate NY. He is the most personable, down to earth gentleman. Everybody sang and danced and cheered and clapped ❤❤❤❤❤❤👍👍👍👍👍. He was very nice to his fans. They did not rush anyone, and stayed after and talked for a long time. Very fond memories. I would love to send him a letter.. They all signed the CD and posed for photos. He is only a few years older. I wish I could remember what year that was. This senior citizen grew up when music was great.. would love to see him in concert again in upstate NY. Thank you for the wonderful interview with Gary. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
I lived in Vegas for a short while. I had ordered a treadmill, and it was being delivered. The driver had just delivered the exact same treadmill at Jerry Lewis's house. He was telling me that Jerry's wife was accepting the delivery; however, Jerry came out of the house asking his wife: "can I come out?" That was so funny! He seem to always be in character. I've always been a Big fan of Jerry and later, Gary. I grew up listening to him and watching all of Jerry's movies and tv. shows. Great stuff! 👏🏻😊.
The 50s-70s put out the best collection of music in world history from jazz, rock, soul, blues, easy listening, pop, country etc. Something about that time frame in music will never be duplicated.
Thanks Gary - You are prob 5 yrs older than me - but my brothers and sister listened to you and all the rest, so I did too. Thank you for your contribution to my life and millions of others. Happy to see you are looking healthy and happy. Cheers mate.
My Spin bike music always includes Gary Lewis and the Playboys. What a wonderful interview. I forgot that Leon Russell co wrote Everybody Loves A Clown and didn't know Leon was also arranger for band. Such a history.
Gary Lewis and the P.B Is one of my very favorites band..hi..Gary..I was born in Arica Chile.. your songs been heard in Radio "el Morro" in Arica AM radio ..❤
1967 January and February at Fort Ord, CA, H23 (WETSU), Army basic training Gary served the same as the rest of us in the same company. Jerry drove a jeep with two generals holding on after graduation to pick up his son.
Gary Lewis was not a Vietnam Veteran !! He worked for two months at the Saigon airport in an office capacity and the remainder spent in a safe, non combat zone of Korea.

When I was 8 in summer 1964 my parents, brother and I were at Yellowstone Park. We saw a band playing called the Playboys in a big dance hall type place [probably part of the hotel] somewhere. I think it may have been Gary Lewis and the Playboys BEFORE they were famous. Unless someone here can answer that mystery, I''ll never know for sure. I also saw him with that Happy Together Tour around 1985 at the Lansing MI Civic Center [since then that building has been torn down]. Maybe Gary could tell me if that was him at Yellowstone. Mom and dad tried to waltz to a 4/4 pop tune, it was hilarious to two little boys...there was hardly anyone in the place at the time, must have been the middle of the week.
Nice Dom! My 1st album as a kid was Gary Lewis and The Playboys Golden Greats! You and I did a club date together back on Long island back in the day :) Good to see you and Gary's interview!
The facts are that Gary worked at the Siagon airport in an office capacity for two months. He served the remainder of his tenure at a safe, non combat zone in Korea...
I know Gary...used to go to his house in Aurora Ohio and worked with his wife Patty. He looks better than ever and I miss him much. His 50th birthday party was amazing fun! I have many pics and have to leave them to Cleveland Rock and Roll museum one day! Hug and blessing Gary... Frankie.
There’s no way he doesn’t know why his father did not leave his kids any money, he knows why but doesn’t say it. His father was a mean hateful person, l am glad his kids are not like him.

Seems like such a sweet guy. His mother's influence no doubt (may she rest in peace).
I’m glad to see that somebody did a really good interview with Gary! Thanks Dom! 🥁
Thank you for writing that.
Love Gary Lewis. His father was a creep, but Gary has always been such a decent, nice guy. Great singer too.

@@1953childstar he served his country. God Bless Him.
Gary is intelligent and seemed to use judgment throughout. Didn't drop his standard.

Ron Hicklin was the real lead singer for Gary Lewis and the Playboys. Lewis too I credit for it for many years.
There were still light pop artists like Tommy Roe after Gary's return from the service. Not all music had changed.
Such great singer Gary i miss u and your music. from Philippines
love all your songs
Gary Lewis he is my favourite person
In the word Really Good guitar player
seems like a nice guy .

a great guy and very talented
thanks you guys.
RIP Carl Radle.
Truly inspirational stuff.
When Gary was in the Army - he did go to Vietnam. He wasn’t in major combat - but he wasn’t in the USO either.
The facts are that Gary worked at the Siagon airport in an office capacity for two months. He served the remainder of his tenure at a safe, non combat zone in Korea...
Thanks for doing this Dom!!
I don't see any pics of his dad, Jerry, on the mantle. Geez, I wonder why..... lol
Frankie.
He wasnt even allowed to come to his dads funeral and was disinherited. What an asshole!
The No.1 Tulsa Guy was actress Jeannie Tripplehorn’s Dad.
Buddy get along with Jerry for a long time - because he didn’t have to work with him all the time!
There’s no way he doesn’t know why his father did not leave his kids any money, he knows why but doesn’t say it.
His father was a mean hateful person, l am glad his kids are not like him.
Hmm, "The Wrecking Crew" provided the instrumentals and Ron Hicklin overdubbed the voice for Gary Lewis… Really, this story does not work !!!
Hal Blaine did the records. Jim Keltner became a Playboy when Lewis switched to guitar for live shows. He also recorded “She’s Just My Style.”
