In this video we take a look at the graphical differences between The Last of Us on PS3 versus The Last of Us Part I remake on PS5. #thelastofus #gaming #playstation
Arguably beyond them, given that a lot of the "before" shots are pre-rendered video, and the actual gameplay often ran well below 30 frames a second. Not that I minded at the time.
The one note that I got from this video is that the PS3 version still holds up quite well to this day. Sure there's a lot of harsh lighting in that version but this was almost a decade ago. If anything, it just makes a good thing even better
I'm glad Annie Wersching got to see her portrayal of Tess on modern day tech before her sad and untimely passing last week. She was also in one of my favorite TV shows, "The Rookie". RIP Annie.
It’s because the remake traded the cartooney, stylistic art direction for photorealism. The color grading is artificial, but that’s what gave it its charm
Came here to say this, the color grading adds so much to the mood and emotion of the scene, some parts of the ps3 game although less impressive graphically, look much more appealing than in the remake
No its not but i agree color scheme can affect the vibes@hayax The charm came from the acting the animation quality the sound design and many other more important things before wasn't even cartoonist it was just of the time
I absolutely can't believe how well the original holds up. Beautiful game all around. That being said, I'm currently playing the remake and it's just on another level. I would say it's in my top 5 for best looking games I've ever played. There have also been some very minor gameplay changes with the AI and some of the controls (it plays almost identical), but those slight tweaks just make the QoL so much better. It's kind of hard to explain, but makes for a much more satisfying playthrough that I felt the original was lacking when I went to replay it. I would hold off for a sale though. If you're new to the game, then maybe get it now. The game is worth it, but 70 bucks is a hefty price tag for a decade old game that has cut content
@@norvinzor I literally said the remake is on another level of quality. I even said they improved the gameplay. It's so much nicer. Just hard to justify the price. And I was praising the original game for looking so good on hardware that's 16 years old now. I never bashed the remake or took anything away from it. Simply stated the price is a little steep
I think the bolder red and black for Ellie's signature shirt and sleeves is better on the ps3 too, the way the colors hit on the ps3 are still so beautiful
Dude yes! Thank you, when they showed that sprawling City shot, the transition from the PS3 graphics to the PS5 it somehow looked like they took away detail. They just added a bunch of fog and smoke and Haze and they removed more of the city somehow I couldn't believe it
Idk, also the lighting effect from the ⛈️ at 3:26 does something for me too. It feels more like a Minecraft storm aesthetic than whatever the dying fluorescent light bulb effect that is the PS5 version turned out to be.
Absolutely mind blowing that the original ran on a PS3. I'm fairly certain the PS5 is far more capable than what this remake is showing us. Especially in the gameplay department.
I 100% agree with you, the lighting was much "softer" and the characters were "stylized", it had lowkey a "cartoon aspect". The hyper realism of Part 1 doesn't fit with the story of the game, it take away the magic from it imo!
Love the look and realism of the remake. The original release on the PS3 was absolutely mind blowing back then. Seeing this remake and how realistically aged and weathered the survivors look is next level. The price tag on the other hand is what is stopping me from buying this for the PS5.
Kinda wish they didnt take away that warm orange tint the game had with some lights, it gave it a nice embrace in non combat explorations. The remake kind of took too much from the grim washed out colors of part 2
That's what I thought too, I loved the original warm colors of the game especially in the church at Bills town or in the streets after you escape the sewers. But I guess the colors of the remake represent the story better ... It's a harsh grim world where the story's is set and maybe they thought 'so should be the colors'.
There is a diffence that is really nice but it just isn't £70 nice especially when the original looks so good and still feels good to play. This just doesn't have enough to justify the price. I would have preferred they just made something new.
@@mikesaintjulesmusic Exactly man, I mean, Nintendo pulled the same thing with Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition, and no one seemed to bat an eye. Still, there are people who bought it full price for PS3, then again for PS4 a year later, so I can understand where some people are coming from.
The graphics quality jump across generations is so palpable here you can almost touch it. It's awesome to see such comparison, and I'm glad they re-released in for PS5. PS3 version looked stellar at the time and pushed PS3 to its limit but it still looked like a video game. The PS5 remake is only few steps from photorealism
You gotta remember that comparing cutscenes is not really an accurate comparison here as the original and remaster cutscenes were pre-recorded videos and the remake is real time rendering. Still the in-game graphics on the PS3 holds up remarkably well for an almost 10 year old game! Kinda puts into context how much of a technological achievement the game was when it launched on the PS3.
For someone like me who only played this once on PS3, I'm very much looking forward to this remake! That said, I'm waiting for a sale. $70 is wayyy too much for a graphical upgrade
@@killaaks6165 Last of us remastered, which is conveniently locked at 4k to 30fps on ps5. I am convinced remastered at 4k60p on ps5 would look better than this in either graphical mode.
@@salutations6370 Not sure if you understood my point. Remastered on PS5 could have easily been unlocked to run at 4k60p. It would have looked and played amazing. They never did it, instead they remade it. The remake doesnt run at 4k60p either. They have added too many effect to what the ps5 can handle at comfortably at 4k60p. It will look worse that remastered would at 4k 60p. im telling you. Ive been playing pc games at 4k60p for years, Anything less than that looks blurry or stuttery.
The PS3 has 256MB of RAM, it's amazing how well the console holds up while running this game. Fun fact: You can plug in a FAT32 USB into one of the ports with an SPRX that runs storage to memory conversion. You can use this to have external RAM running on your console which allows you to run more tasks. For every 32GB of space, you get an extra 500MB of RAM (750MB on a PS3 if running HFW or CFW basically).
All in all I’m very impressed. Watched a whole play through of a remake and I’m astonished at how they improved the scenes, especially the backgrounds to some of the levels. It looks how it did in my head when I was a teen and played it on the ps3.
I honestly like the look of the original better overall, but the water in the remake looks fantastic. They also focus on showing more of the eyes in the remake which allows some more emotionality.
Looks nice but not paying $70 for a game I’ve already played and it also doesn’t have multiplayer. It will eventually be available on PlayStation Plus.
same finished 8 times remastered version and bad part, i don't have a ps5 is weird they release part 2 for ps4 but they can't release this remake too for ps4
Looking at these side by side the PS3 version draws my attention more. The PS5 version is visually better but maybe too polished I don't know. Somehow the PS3 version world looks more run down and dingy. If I had a PS5 I would want to play it but not for $70 of a game I played twice on PS3 and once on PS4.
The graphics look better, but with the moving parts and all together I kinda like the charm of the ps3 version more. There's something about the art direction that melds better.
The ps5 obviously has a little more texture detail and seems to be higher res but I prefer the more greyish lack of colour in (some) scenes or characters in the ps3 version. It gives a more moody atmosphere, almost like an old 70s movie. That's the problem with so called upgrades, sometimes the choices made to enhance really have the opposite effect as the developers end up thinking far too hard. Overall though both are good, but the jump between generations shows far less improvement than the generations that have come before, and the little things are starting to become more important these days anyway (character ai and animations in particular). The developers need to remember they are making games and not movies
@@skipperdipper5186 they have one 'big' team that's staggering work loads. They've mostly been working on part 1 while keeping factions on the back burner
I just played this for the first time on PC and to say I'm blown away is an understatement. One of the best games I've ever played in my life and I've been gaming since Pong. the story is really heart wrenching at times
I guess what the original lou upholds the atmospheric vibes that coincides with the individuals' personality. Like the harsh red tint of bill's town like his harsh straightforward personality.
Maybe it's just nostalgia, but I still prefer the original art/style. Tess for me was always a more intriguing character because she was younger. And for that price it should have included multiplayer as well ..
@Connor RK800 the original design to me could still be late 30 or 40 dead on. If they meant it or not I found the character design more intriguing and looks like she could have handled herself better and made me wonder what made her such a badass what had she gone through to turn her that way at that age.. now just seems to have tipped to far into the older direction, for me anyway
@@snake1024 you found her hot. This is all. Now she Looks Like her Age and you dont find her hot anymore. Man's Always Like Young looking Women and you are normal for that... But still a pervert
Agreed on both. 1. The visual upgrades are top notch as usual for ND but playing the ps3 and ps4 versions multiple times, watching multiple playthroughs, for so many years... im so use to how they all originally looked. I'd have preferred they added the characters details but not change their looks. 2. With the way ND handled Lost Legacy not being a new engine developed game they made it a point to not charge full price... so I am a bit surprised at the full price of this which doesnt include the multiplayer.
This is a perfect example of the difference between graphics and visuals. The Ps5 graphic are incredibly more advanced than ps3, but there is little difference in the feel as it the same visuals. It incredible really what dev achieve and sometimes we take for granted. Proof that graphics are not a sign of a great game, or that a great game needs the best graphics.
@@The_Ostrich I don't think I have explained myself very well. The intention was more to commend the ps3 version. The PS3 version is made on 16 year old technology and still looks good. I can see there is a difference between the two, but honestly if a game had the intention of styling their game like the ps3 version I would not be upset with those graphics, I think it still looks great. Blind testing, if I had to guess which was which, or which one I preferred I would find it tough to pin point it! I think there are merits and demerits to both versions. But that might be, as you say, my old eyes and I might need glasses.
Graphics are still everything for a great game to have a story to its fans being a already great fans that needs all in one . You play a story mode game your gona see cutscenes and are Gina wanna see cutscenes that look lord like so graphics somewhat do matter on top if the game being good itself . This is the most times gamete will care about graphics in a story mode game then online multiplayer worrying about graphics over multiplayer wheh gameplay would then matter most
I agree with you, the little details in the ps3 version makes a big difference, the lighting and the feel of the atmosphere. You can’t beat that with (only) better graphics. That being said I havn’t play the remake yet so i can’t judge it, but from the looks of it, it does kinda feel different..
@@Coltonflix910 haha just lucky enough to score one fast enough from scalpers but havent really touched it since last month since there isnt much exclusives to play :p
Aside from Tess looking a bit better, I prefer everything of the original.....it looks and fits better in a artistic way imo...remake is pushing graphics for graphics sake and it losses some.of the charm and grime of the original. Thanks but no thanks here
Old vertion actually has alot better and more interesting lighting. Nice high key contrast with faces party in shadow. New vertion is kinda... to clean... and that makes it les realistic. Take a lok at the lighting on some of those super photo real UR5 trailer, harsh lighting has alot to do with it looking real.
saying the remake is in anyway “less realistic” is a laughable claim. It takes an insane amount of copium to start defending the ps3 lighting with ridiculously crushed blacks and terrible color accuracy
@@lotus2001 Man, are you in a visual arts school? Because if you did you would understand perfectly the difference between perfect graphics and perfect visuals
@@infrunaya Might not be. I preferred the PS4 remastered to PS3 because of better textures. But I don't like the hyper realism look on PS5. Also a dramatic story like The Last of Us looks better in a cinematic 24ps look. I think the obsession with hfr has gone too far.
@@ryanthomas2432 Then buy it , And see TLOU becoming the 2nd GTA5 with the heavy amount rockstar has milked it and Now its lost its reputation. Good luck

@@im.weasel bro even GTA V doesn’t cost $70🤣 Also it has released every time with its online features as well You really shouldn’t use GTA V as an example
As an artist in the game industry for 25 years - I can assure you that this is a LOT more than a 'little' upgrade. Every single asset has been re-worked. That's literally years of work. I'm not saying it's worth full-price - but there's no way this can be considered a 'little' anything.
The animation in this remake are better than ever! I love the more emotions and details put in their faces and I know a lot of people hate Tess’ new face but for me, I like the ways she looks in the remake than In the original
Yeah, I agree about Tess, she looks better in the remake Btw, that's how I remembered her when playing the original game. I was surprised when I saw how young she looked in comparison with how I used to remember her. The new look fits better
I love the original but once you see the remake it's kinda hard to go back. I really like the new animation. I also feel like the new character design fits their voices better, if that makes sense.
I'd pick the authentic PS3 version every time. Not everything needs updating, especially if it's made to look old & battered. It's truly an incredible game. I'm just about to complete it & I'm enjoying so much (like the Uncharted games) I don't care about platinuming it. I see there's a "Part Two" that was released so I'm looking forward to see how the rest of it goes.
Is it me or sometimes the old PS3 version looks better? more visually appealing? they really didn't need to remastered this game yet again, just a patch of the already remastered PS4 version to make it run at 4K 60fps on PS5 would be enough, they just want that money.
@@ashwilkessy4766 I think the PS5 could run the PS4 remaster at 4K 120fps with a patch but nope they chose to remaster it even further throwing that out the window and charge $70 without even having the multiplayer.
Haha Exactly my feelings about graphics...they have evolved but nothing to the degree in which they did back in the good ol days ....from ps2 to ps3 from Xbox to Xbox 360....those were the days 🤩 Most games just disappoint me these days...make em look pretty automatically gets 9s or 10s ....nah....graphics aren't everything.
That PS3 Cell architecture is no joke if only developers knew how to use it so well maybe there may be better looking games for the PS3 running at 1080P 60HZ.
I read somewhere Cell architecture had a reasonable rationale behind it: ps2 had lots of dedicated units for each stage of a game: graphics, sound, logic, etc. For ps3, Sony designed one chip with a few exceptionally fast units, so it could perform every of those roles in one chip, except for graphics. If ps3 only had a better memory layout and good dev tools from start, we might have be playing with some interaction of Cell today.
The graphics of the new version obviously look a tonne better, but some of the art direction and visual style (such as the lighting) looks a lot better in the original
Nah. There's nothing at all in the original that looks better (not even as good as actually) than Part I remake. Everything about Part I remake looks vastly superior to the original. Looks way better than the remaster on PS4 Pro, too.
This was exactly my thought. Obviously the graphics are far superior, with more polygons and whatnot, but I much prefer the original art direction in just about every scene. The new realistic lighting gets rid of the feel of a lot of the areas from the original. And I do not like any of the new models over the originals. In Part II, the models looked like the original people but older, which is what happens as you age; certain features about you change. But these new models are reverse-engineered from the Part II models, meaning they tried to bring the older-aged faces to the younger characters, and it just looks...off to me.
I am amazed how well it still holds up against my PS3 and PS4. I really thought I was remembering it better than it was, but no it was great back then and looks great even now. (That never happened with my Atari 2600 or Nintendo. lol
@@olzzon Totally agree. Its like with modern games they are adding a lot of effects that actually dont improve the visuals. Some modern games look cartoony or plasticiney. I can't quite but my finger on it.

Yes, the character models and high fid textures are obviously better on PS5 but the lighting in the original feels so much better. Ray tracing is great for realism but the original version's slightly darker tone seems very fitting to me.

So the only people left is the 1% of players who don't even play the game when its free, meaning they just aren't interested in playing the last of us.
Even though now there is parity between part 1 and 2, part 1 to me still remains the highlight of the PS360 era and still looks every bit as gorgeous on my 1080p plasma. There is just something about period hardware with a period game that no remaster or remake can touch: My sense with TLOU was that it was a technical marvel that milked everything from the hardware and packed that punch as well in it’s storytelling. The remaster is just the same but with a fresh coat of paint that doesn’t justify its hefty price tag to me because it can never be the original and thus beat that original experience.

That's what I thought too, I loved the original warm colors of the game especially in the church at Bills town or in the streets after you escape the sewers. But I guess the colors of the remake represent the story better ... It's a harsh grim world where the story's is set and maybe they thought 'so should be the colors'.

Its more gritty. Remastered looks less cartoony too.
The developers need to remember they are making games and not movies
if this was bundled with Part 2 with some kind of ''beta access'' to Factions 2 then I can see why it would cost 70$

In Part II, the models looked like the original people but older, which is what happens as you age; certain features about you change. I haven’t played this game yet so I’m looking forward to getting this new iteration. Sweet
If you have a ps5 save your money as you already have the remastered version among 19 other games for free.
@@killaaks6165 Or they could buy the definitive version since its their first playthrough
@@ryanthomas2432 Or they could save $70 for the game.
@@killaaks6165 Well they clearly want to play the game and the remake is the best version that they can play it
true, this only appeals to players who haven't played the original. But this makes me think, if he has a ps5 & still hasn't played the last of us, perhaps he didn't know he already had access to it for free.
The ps3 is also looking great 🙌🏻
Lets appreciate that
imo, the ps5 model for tess suits her voice actor more! i love this game, with or without the remake it will always be one of my favourites. never gets old!!!
I wish we got a little more time with Tess in the Re-remake. My girl dies too early in the original but there's enough story to make you care. Such an amazing game
Some games just never die
Well, obviously it looks impressive but I'm not paying half of $70 for that.
I'll buy it when it's $15-20, which it probably will in about a year. Or probably less.
I'm soo glad my first time playing this game was with the remastered version. I had no idea the game was ps3 old.
Cutscenes are really pretty even on ps3, but I tried playing remastered version on ps4 pro recently after playing TLOU part 2, and it feels very outdated after second part, so I’m very happy I can play it on PC
