    Dude is on point. I remember patrolling Iraq and certain parts were over joyed to see Americans on the streets. People don't hear that very often. Ya we damn sure had enemies. One time we were just finishing a fire fight and the neighbors brought us food and thanked us for getting rid of those assholes. This is why I've always been torn on refugees. One thing I like about this guy is that he has a healthy sense of perspective. His civilian wife freaks over a simple scheduling conflict for an evening out, and he's got enough on the ball to tell himself "If this is the worst thing my wife has to deal with, I did something right." A lot of people, they don't have that perspective and it makes their lives... not pleasant.

    It was funny to see how uncomfortable Jocko got when Dave asked him about his politics. I don't think he wants those labels because it will make it difficult for some people to hear his over all message. The second he says he is a Republican 50% of the population is nearly guaranteed to tune out.

      But he also doesn't want that to be a possible distraction. After listening to him for a while, he is all about building relationships and not doing things that interfere with the mission. If there is a chance that getting political can interfere with his message then he probably wants to avoid it.

      A warning for anyone reading this [that is to say, everyone who is reading this comment should read Extreme Ownership by Jocko Willink]: he kinda writes it for the white-collar, out-of-touch corporate executive, many of whom I presume to be in a rut with their company simply because they're out of touch. Well, what this means is, it comes off a bit like a children's weekly reader. In his defense, he structures the chapters very concisely, with an introduction, a story, the lesson and how it applies to, well, corporate America I guess. But I argue that *MOST* of us aren't stuffy, out-of-touch corporate executives who have picked up the book to maybe apply his lessons to our own lives, to attaining our own dreams and goals.
      So ultimately, expect Extreme Ownership to *sometimes* sound like he's over-explaining some things, or that the lessons are custom-catered to these executive types. Which, again, in his defense, those are the people with whom he spoke in putting together the lessons for the book. It really turned me off, though, and I can't really put my finger on why but "patronizing" seems like an accurate sense that I get.
      I think if I knew this going in, I would have finished it by now. Instead, it's collecting dust because I've been putting it off. The fact is: Jocko doesn't think we're stupid. He was just trying to make his stories and lessons vividly clear, which he does, and it's an amazing book for that.

      @@alanfike Pretty much.
      Just don't read it as your only book as an executive.
      It has thrilling stories to convey it's messages. But it boils down to some basic principles which every decent executive already knows of.

    Coming from a war zone and back to the states was surreal. I remember listening to the news reports when I returned and it was like...what the hell are they talking about. You come back to a place/population that doesn’t have a clue what our military is doing and doesn’t care..in a matter of speaking. Just not part of their fabric... at times for me it was disconcerting. It is what it is.........

      When I came home in 2006 my wife told me she had found another man and moved out. I went to a bar while she cleared out her stuff and found out I couldn't have a cigarette with my beer. I was like, "you can all kiss my a**". I was so angry I wanted to punch some one. Then I just had to calm down and realize that the world changes and you have to adjust to it. Just move forward and don't let frustration and emotional pain rule your life. This is life and you have to make it better or die. So make it better.

    It's really not difficult to point out what's wrong in office hierarchies. They put people directly into management roles who have no idea what goes on below them and no interest in learning. Then those people do the old "We're going to do things my way because that's how I justify my salary." and become impediments to efficiency. You can't tell them "But I've been here 20 years and I do things this way for a reason." Imagine the army making someone a drill sergeant who's never even been through basic training and you know how the office world works.

    • @dougn4709
      @dougn4709 5 років тому

      And Jocko would say to the employees that have to deal with those bad managers: "Good. Now take on more responsibility and lead up the chain." Crappy offices are crappy offices due to bad leaders/managers and due to bad subordinates who just bitch and moan and don't do anything about it. Don't be a victim, be an agent of change.

    • @tarn1135
      @tarn1135 3 роки тому

      That’s somewhat true. When I took over the management of an office I spent the first month learning everything they did up till then. I talked to the people who were their the longest to see what they thought and what they would like to see changed, after I implemented changes not all of them were what the people wanted but at the end of the day that office worked and wasn’t circling the drain. Most important thing I think is having an open door policy, people always work harder when they think they can speak without the worry of retaliation.
