Dude is on point. I remember patrolling Iraq and certain parts were over joyed to see Americans on the streets. People don't hear that very often. Ya we damn sure had enemies. One time we were just finishing a fire fight and the neighbors brought us food and thanked us for getting rid of those assholes. This is why I've always been torn on refugees. The enemy will find a hole and use it to bring the war here.
Hey man, thanks for serving. I think more people need to hear what you just said.
Cool story but you are right about the refugees. People take kindness for weakness.
@@OutSideTheBoxFormat Yeah, real kindness and strength is burning a country to the ground and then leaving the citizens there to suffer and die.
@@danielvincent1153 You didn't even listen to Jocko's story did you, nor did you read what Andy d just recalled?
Man I spent 9 years in the Navy. All during peace time. We had so much fun, but part of me wishes I could have seen action tho. Talk about dichotomy
One thing I like about this guy is that he has a healthy sense of perspective. His civilian wife freaks over a simple scheduling conflict for an evening out, and he's got enough on the ball to tell himself "If this is the worst thing my wife has to deal with, I did something right." A lot of people, they don't have that perspective and it makes their lives... not pleasant.
That was a huge take away for me personally, i get frustrated over the stupid split milk bullshit my wife is always freaking the fuck out over. But his outlook is the correct one that i need to adopt.
I have a tendency to feel frustrated with people over that too. It's something I'm working on but I'm such a wise-ass and feel the need to say "wow, if that's the biggest problem you're dealing with, you're doing great!" Which is true but that doesn't mean I need to say it
When comparing Jocko to all the other guests Dave's had, it really puts into perspective how large Jocko is.
Or, how small Dave's nerdy guests are
Also, I instantly noticed that he's sitting/leaning forward. Always engaged. Kinda weird to see such high energy in the studio lol
No kidding! I’ve seen Dave in real life.
The molk must work
@@BikesNotDrugs Are you saying Dave is a good sized dude? And Jocko makes him seem small?
Jocko!! My husband loves your books, and my 10 year old son read your way of the warrior kid book in like a week! It started off as a homeschool assignment, but he got really into it and read it all! Thank you!
I bought that book to give to my nephew when he gets older. He's 2 now so it'll be a while.

It was funny to see how uncomfortable Jocko got when Dave asked him about his politics. I don't think he wants those labels because it will make it difficult for some people to hear his over all message. The second he says he is a Republican 50% of the population is nearly guaranteed to tune out.
if he loses a fan based on his choice of political party, they were never really a fan. The man is brilliant. Smart people can overlook politics and see character
But he also doesn't want that to be a possible distraction. After listening to him for a while, he is all about building relationships and not doing things that interfere with the mission. If there is a chance that getting political can interfere with his message then he probably wants to avoid it.

It was a really awkward segue to an equally awkward question. I wish Dave hadn't asked it at all, especially given the direction he seemed to try to unnaturally drive the conversation afterwards.
Don't worry about it 25% of those 50% ran for a safe space as soon as they tuned in and saw a scary man and the other 25% instantly started jerking off.

jeffreypigeon I thought the same thing. It looks like a petite chair under him 😹
Well, I like seeing the clash. It reminds me that Rubin is inviting people who are very different from him into his "home" and that makes me glad and interested. It is fun to see a knuckle dragger like Jocko on that super gay set. He's clearly a man at home in his own skin wherever he goes. Great quality. My husband's the same way. He's himself no matter what the setting. Our grown son's the same. Great guest!
Denelle Bratcher I agree. I thought the same thing about my husband looking big in that chair. It also looks like it's the perfect size for me though. I wasn't being critical, just observing.
Jocko is awesome to listen to no matter what he's doing.
''My best way to rebel as a kid from a small New England town was to join the military''
It's a perfect way to rebel for any kid. What a shame it is still so underestimated.
Back then, they had a cause to join, right now, kids are more woke and can see right through the governments lies. Id still join tho lmao
Drstealyoursong _ No its the fact that you’re not fighting for anything worth fighting for.
J C that’s pretty much what I was saying?
Drstealyoursong _ No you’re saying woke. That isn’t really the case. Tell me what is so interesting about the military? The pay ain’t shit and you’re fighting with no actual reason besides enforcing the presidents will. The last time the military fought for something that meant something was world war 2.
J C to be honest, the respect and brotherhood you get from it, the survival skill sets, discipline and achieving what other people can’t. I know that the government uses most of the military as pawns, I know the dirty shit they get up to, I follow it pretty closely. I know you gotta dice these up into segments but you can't end MID SENTENCE dawg!
Also, since we're criticizing production.. Dave please figure out when to change between tight and wide shots. For example, wide shot of you both when you ask the guest a question, then tight shot of the guest when they respond. Maybe it's just me, but I find it distracting when done incorrectly. ✌
It's actually a stroke of genius. This is the ultimate cliffhanger to make us watch the next one.

Extreme ownership is a great book
A warning for anyone reading this [that is to say, everyone who is reading this comment should read Extreme Ownership by Jocko Willink]: he kinda writes it for the white-collar, out-of-touch corporate executive, many of whom I presume to be in a rut with their company simply because they're out of touch. Well, what this means is, it comes off a bit like a children's weekly reader. In his defense, he structures the chapters very concisely, with an introduction, a story, the lesson and how it applies to, well, corporate America I guess. But I argue that *MOST* of us aren't stuffy, out-of-touch corporate executives who have picked up the book to maybe apply his lessons to our own lives, to attaining our own dreams and goals.
So ultimately, expect Extreme Ownership to *sometimes* sound like he's over-explaining some things, or that the lessons are custom-catered to these executive types. Which, again, in his defense, those are the people with whom he spoke in putting together the lessons for the book. It really turned me off, though, and I can't really put my finger on why but "patronizing" seems like an accurate sense that I get.
I think if I knew this going in, I would have finished it by now. Instead, it's collecting dust because I've been putting it off. The fact is: Jocko doesn't think we're stupid. He was just trying to make his stories and lessons vividly clear, which he does, and it's an amazing book for that.
@@alanfike Pretty much.
Just don't read it as your only book as an executive.
It has thrilling stories to convey it's messages. But it boils down to some basic principles which every decent executive already knows of.
Check the second book out: "Dichotomy of Leadership." Somehow even better than the excellent "Extreme Ownership."
I did the same thing in the 60's, I joined the Army at age 17, while all kids I went to school with were into the hippy stage! I was in the Army from 1968 to71. Best thing that ever happened to me!! It taught me how to be a man and productive citizen! Later on in life, I became a police officer and retired from that profession with 26 years! To the Navy Seal, thank you for your service sir!!
I've heard about a number of US government "leaders" who could stand to take some quality time learning from Mr. Willink.

He's probably one of the most inspiring people on the planet. Would love to sit down, buy him dinner and pick his brain. I have a quote from him on my fridge that I read to my kids everyday. Jocko rocks!!!
And that quite is 🤔lol 😆
What’s the quote?
I had his messages as my alarm clock, but it scared my wife.
"If you break it means it's time to fortify your will to make it stronger. If fact, if you break, the fight is just beginning. And as you crawl up and out of that dismal and wretched place, covered in blood, sweat, dirt and filth... as you rise above what your worth, you will see that in the very act of fighting on and standing up you will become and remain unbroken." Jocko

About dam time Jocko came onto the Rubin Report.
no matter how early i wake up….Jocko has already done more than i will in the whole day.
Coming from a war zone and back to the states was surreal. I remember listening to the news reports when I returned and it was like...what the hell are they talking about. You come back to a place/population that doesn’t have a clue what our military is doing and doesn’t care..in a matter of speaking. Just not part of their fabric... at times for me it was disconcerting. It is what it is.........
I can't imagine just how difficult that would be. Thank you for serving.
When I came home in 2006 my wife told me she had found another man and moved out. I went to a bar while she cleared out her stuff and found out I couldn't have a cigarette with my beer. I was like, "you can all kiss my a**". I was so angry I wanted to punch some one. Then I just had to calm down and realize that the world changes and you have to adjust to it. Just move forward and don't let frustration and emotional pain rule your life. This is life and you have to make it better or die. So make it better.
Allen Hamilton, Sorry your wife did that to you, man. If it makes you feel any better, it sounds like you deserve better than her anyway. We all have struggles to overcome in our lives and the last thing anyone needs is some piece of crap who wants to drag them down because they themselves are miserable. Godspeed, friend.
@@Garrus1995 When you're outside the wire for a year, all you think about is coming home to your wife. It messes up your head when that goes wrong. After truly seeing what that wife was, I got better. I've been in a great relationship for the last 9 years. Thanx for your words Brother.

Great guest Rubin!!!
I appreciate Jocko's perspective because he's authentic. I'm glad he's home because his message is really important. Especially with an ineffectual government which refuses to work for the betterment of the lives of the American people.
There is no more Alpha than THIS man.
It's really not difficult to point out what's wrong in office hierarchies. They put people directly into management roles who have no idea what goes on below them and no interest in learning. Then those people do the old "We're going to do things my way because that's how I justify my salary." and become impediments to efficiency. You can't tell them "But I've been here 20 years and I do things this way for a reason." Imagine the army making someone a drill sergeant who's never even been through basic training and you know how the office world works.
And Jocko would say to the employees that have to deal with those bad managers: "Good. Now take on more responsibility and lead up the chain." Crappy offices are crappy offices due to bad leaders/managers and due to bad subordinates who just bitch and moan and don't do anything about it. Don't be a victim, be an agent of change.
That’s somewhat true. When I took over the management of an office I spent the first month learning everything they did up till then. I talked to the people who were their the longest to see what they thought and what they would like to see changed, after I implemented changes not all of them were what the people wanted but at the end of the day that office worked and wasn’t circling the drain. Most important thing I think is having an open door policy, people always work harder when they think they can speak without the worry of retaliation.
