What Dr. Wolfe described is EXACTLY my concern, as likely many others. I'm 55, extremely active, would love to gain muscle mass, but want to limit calories. Getting enough macros (with emphasis on protein) is challenging--as he stated. Ahg!
I’m 45, and after watching dr Lyon’s video with MindMuscle - I added a protein isolate twice a day It’s about 100cal but 28g protein, 2g carb and 0.5g fat and incl EAA and BCAAs in high enough dose to trigger muscle build. It’s been a game changer for me.
@@0ucantstopme034 if you look up most of the whey isolates … you will see they are all pretty similar .. in my country there is a brand Evolve and NPL. Check the back of the whey containers. You want a 25-32g serving scoop size total - and is 400kJ or 100cal Some cheap wheys say “25g protein” but you then see it’s a 60gm scoop serving… meaning it’s low quality. They should show the nutritional info per 100gm - and the protein should be 72-85g (meaning it’s 72-80% pure whey isolate). A whey isolate, because it’s purer will have much less sugars, carbs and fat. This means it will have less bloating or if your lactose intolerant - will be easier on digestion. You should also check the ingredient list: and it should list Whey Protein Isolate as the first ingredient … and ideally, not have a mix of various different wheys. The shakes will also have BCAA and EAA (amino acids) included.

Dr. Wolfe Has an amazing amount of useful information contrasted with a poker face.😊 At first I thought this was going to be boring, but his talk really helped to clarify my questions about what type of protein to use.
First time listening to a podcast that doesn't sound like an infomercial or doomsday warning. But a well articulate doctor diagnostic of the problem or pathology .
we always cover BCAA which is incomplete and comes up short but never EAA's which are complete in all the right ratios. unless I missed it was it mentioned?
@@sportbilly6329 my comment was incomplete - leucine appears to help with the absorption of protein. The other amino acids are present in protein powder. SEE "the role of protein in building muscle by dr stuart phillips phd". Still available on youtube.
@DrGabrielleLyon what are your thoughts on the Other Ingredients in flavored amino powders? These things are inflammatory, does the benefit out way the risk? Thank you for all the great info and work you provide!
Hello and thank you for a great video. I exercise regularly and take the Perform amino acid prior to and during my weightlifting workout. And I also take whey supplement twice a day. My question is that the Perform serving listed on the container is 6.3 grams per serving and the whey protein serving size is 38 grams per serving. How does the number of amino acids compare between the 6.3 grams and the 38 grams? I'm assuming the difference is the isolated amino content of the Perform amino acids vs all the different ingredients that make up the whey power. But is 6.3 grams a sufficient number of amino acids to consume to get the required benefits from my workouts? Thank you for you all your help and work!
High carbs lower cortisol, which helps keep the muscles. It also increases FGF-21, which has anti-obesity effect and helps maintain muscle mass. That can be helpfull in old people, since they tend to have more body fat. Also high protein will tend to lower testosterone. It's very complicated, I wouldn't jump to the conclusion that more protein is necessarily the best way to counter sarcopenia. Whey is often recommended against sarcopenia, but I've seen a study saying that it doesn't really work. Whey is an interesting food with lots of interesting compounds though, I take it myself.
High carb diet made me a mess for 60 years (vegetarian). At 68 I have spent years trying to fix myself. Still struggling. Staying low carb and feeling much better, thanks!
Bottom line. No one diet is cookie cutter and one must consume what their individual physiology can thrive with. No junk food. I also add in intermittent fasting every now and then. I listen to my body. I just eat some of all real food available to me at different times. That works for me. I grew up on a farm. Need I say more.
Thank you so much for sharing this conversation! I am particularly interested in this subject because of my mom. She lost a lot of weight due to loss of apetite and eating very small portions. Surely, she's not meeting her protein threshold for muscle maintenance and she's becoming frail. So I'm researching this to get her supplementation with either a protein drink or BCAA or other options. 🙏🥰
@ 41.18 very important info. That was me in 1973 at 19 years old on a vegan diet, hypocrites' raw diet as well. for 10 years and felt fine. then got weaker, lost a lot of muscle mass, and had a lot of dental problems, like Plack build up, enamel erosion, cavities and crumbling teeth. and arthritis. Keto carnivore now for 7 years.
Here are a few studies that have explored topic of high protein diet and how it affects testosterone levels. 1. Effects of Dietary Composition on Testosterone: A study published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism in 1986 examined the effects of different dietary compositions on testosterone levels in men. It found that a high-protein, low-carbohydrate diet reduced testosterone levels compared to a high-carbohydrate diet. 2. Protein Intake and Sex Hormones in Older Men: A study published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society in 2010 investigated the relationship between protein intake and sex hormones in older men. The study found that high protein intake was associated with lower levels of sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), which can indirectly affect testosterone levels. 3. Protein Intake and Testosterone in Resistance-Trained Men: A study published in the International Journal of Sports Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism in 2006 examined the impact of high-protein diets on testosterone levels in resistance-trained men. The study found that high protein intake was associated with reduced testosterone levels.
For your number 2. It is interesting that some people will go on the carnivore diet simply to get prescribed TRT. I know 3 different people who have done this to make their test appear low on paper and it's because SBGh goes up and free test goes down. It may also be due to lack of carbs altogether.
So, if I understand Dr. Wolfe correctly, if I am intermittent fasting but need to exercise in the early morning, I can take a complete amino acid supplement before or after my workout and later, when I have my first meal, include collagen peptides that excludes the tryptophan but has the methionine, in my homemade nutrition shake. I also eat grass fed/pasture raised proteins along with vegetables/salad. That will help with muscle synthesis, balance out the dopamine - serotonin ratio that will not interrupt energy and sleep.
For titanup3556: Might have been wheat protein. Also, I have gleaned, from other episodes on Dr. Lyon’s UA-cam channel, that it seems best to supplement BCAA’s with any vegan protein meal. If I remember correctly, Dr. Lyon suggested leucine, and I decided to add BCAAs to fulfill this recommendation. … Shout out to Dr. Lyon for helping me age more gracefully!
So, basically whey isolate is still the best way of getting all the eaa and eating right along with proper exercise are still the best modality for health, - and beyond that therapeutic formulations of specific amino can be ingested or injected, which only super rich will be able to truly afford - is that about the right summary?
I take Perfect Amino but I constantly hear there are 9 we should take but Perfect Amino only has 8. Any suggestions are appreciated. I’ve been looking at Optimal Amino, which claims to be better, cheaper and has more aminos than Perfect Amino

Dr Lyon, I do enjoy the nerdy aspect of these podcasts! I always loved biochemistry.Having said that, sadly all the biochemistry in the world is not going to make a dent if the message is not loud and clear : we ( as western society) need to eat much less and move more. It sounds like even Dr Wolfe agree that at the end of the day it does not really matter what you eat as long as we keep calories in check- obviously provided the delivery of an adequate amount of protein. I do not know what is the solution on a global scale given people are bombarded with temptations of ultra-processed, junk foods 24/7. Let's not forget also the world is at a point where the current food system is unsustainable.
People eat more (calories) because the processed foods are so sadly lacking in full proper nutrition. They crave what is not available in these foods even though stuffed to the gill with calories. Whole, nutrition-dense foods are the answer. But the food industries have so much influence, even over the advocates who should be protective (medical industry, FDA, etc). Bad foods are promoted far and wide, and healthy foods, condemned.😢 ** "Eat your Wheaties." AND get your daily dose of glyphosate, too. Don't want to miss out on diabetes2!**
Cattle, goat, and sheep all can produce food in climates and off land which is impossible to farm for vegetable or grain crops. The plant based fad is actually not the best for the environment.
Funny to see two people trying to say that you cant get everything with whole plant based food... Of course they both sell their products... Rich roll, ultr endurance winner might have something to say

So nice conversation, but what people of this mankind evolution never makes clear, is about a very direct question. Is it better to take complete aminoácids (EEAS) or protein supplement, may be whey protein?
I have a trainer who told me that bcaa supplementation would be helpful with exertion headaches I get from any sort of high intensity training or running. Is this true?
I wonder what you all both think of the latest research following ingestion of 100g protein and it all goes to building muscle over 10 hours and apparently there is no known upper limit.
Still a little confused. I am wondering are the protein recommendations per pound of weight to be applied to your current weight? Or your goal weight? I have about 50lbs to lose to reach goal weight.
.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight??? A kilogram is 2.205 lbs. I've not heard this one, always heard the reference; .8 grams of protein per pound of lean body mass.. anyone?
0.8 g/kg body weight is the RDA recommendation to prevent malnutrition. However if you’re optimizing for muscle, then 1.6g/kg body weight seems more ideal. This can move up to 2.2g/kg (equivalent to 1g/lb of body weight) when body fat is lower, in order to preserve muscle during caloric restriction.
it's great temporarily for weight loss. but Peter Attia gave up fasting due to muscle loss. sounds like this doc recommends not letting the body go too long without protein. i'm gonna try 30g for BF, lunch and dinner. from 8 am to 7 pm.
You should know that FASTING has more benefits than most people can even imagine. Some of the things people eat, and take cause more damage through oxidation and impurities than any perceived benefits are worth.
@@jaghad Sure but it's pretty hard to get enough protein without a powder of some type, especially when you're eating tons of plants for cancer or other health purposes.
I'm currently under treatment for Hep C. Because of this virus I have sarcopenia. I was told to stay of red meat but I do take some BCAA's as well as Taurine to help with horrible leg cramps. Would Keto or carnivore actually help me get some of my muscle back?
I wisj you would speak in lbs instead of kilograms, i was born and raised in American we know things better in lbs, now to understand you i have to go and learn how many kilograms makes a lb so ill know how much protein to take according to my body weight in lbs
You mentioned that it is very hard to lose weight by eating enough protein. Well let's say you eat a carnivore meal from pork that meets your protein walue you you are 100 kg and you eat 600grams of meat made on grill you will have some fats baut you will hit your 200grams of protein. You can eat it in two meals and having oly some dressing or limited amount let's say 100g of vegetables.. how id that hitting over your calore for maintenance.I m coming from the idea that someone got fat because he eat to many carbs less protein before. Now you revers you eat less carbs. Glucogenesis will solve the carbs requirements from your body fat
What you two are doing for the working class men and women is much appreciated.

I’m 45, and after watching dr Lyon’s video with MindMuscle - I added a protein isolate twice a day
It’s about 100cal but 28g protein, 2g carb and 0.5g fat and incl EAA and BCAAs in high enough dose to trigger muscle build.
It’s been a game changer for me.
@@JDAfrica If you don't mind my asking, what is it? I'd like to look it up. Thanks.
@@0ucantstopme034 if you look up most of the whey isolates … you will see they are all pretty similar .. in my country there is a brand Evolve and NPL.
Check the back of the whey containers. You want a 25-32g serving scoop size total - and is 400kJ or 100cal
Some cheap wheys say “25g protein” but you then see it’s a 60gm scoop serving… meaning it’s low quality.

I relistened its mentioned but in the context of just needing them and being there not so much covered as a supplement itself eaa's vs bcaa's
Leucine is VERY IMPORTANT. The rest not so much.

What is the difference between collagen and amino acid formulas and high quality protein such as cold water fish?
Really enjoyed this podcast ❤
So happy you enjoyed it!!
High carbs doesn't lower cortisol stop that bullshit. Share the sources lol
Bull Spit.
High carb diet made me a mess for 60 years (vegetarian). At 68 I have spent years trying to fix myself. Still struggling. Staying low carb and feeling much better, thanks!
Raw dairy from A-2 herd (Jersey, for example) better absorbed than a whey shake).

I thought I was supposed to eat a minimum of 1gram of protein per pound of lean muscle mass (LMM) not bodyweight?
So how much EAA should be supplemented per day? What is optimal?
It may also be due to lack of carbs altogether.

bcaas should be taken off the market. its only half the EAAs and filled with fillers and fake sugars
Great information as always! At 18:26 Dr. Wolfe mentions an inferior protein source that I was not able to distinguish. Can you clarify? Thank you!
For titanup3556: Might have been wheat protein. Also, I have gleaned, from other episodes on Dr. Lyon’s UA-cam channel, that it seems best to supplement BCAA’s with any vegan protein meal. if you have an allergy/intolerance to whey, is rice/pea protein isolates a good solution to supplement an omnivorous diet?
Bad foods are promoted far and wide, and healthy foods, condemned.😢

Still a little confused. I am wondering are the protein recommendations per pound of weight to be applied to your current weight? Or your goal weight? I have about 50lbs to lose to reach goal weight.
Goal weight
.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight??? A kilogram is 2.205 lbs.
I've not heard this one, always heard the reference; .8 grams of protein per pound of lean body mass.. anyone?
Dunno maybe the WHO has the .8 per kg requirment. And dr lyon and others says should be 1g per lb(average)
Where in the world did you hear that? It's never been per lbs. It has always been per kilo of body weight.
