N of 1 here I went through menopause and I’m an athlete. I am about 22% fat consistently. Went through menopause and my fat went up. I ate less I did the usual things and it didn’t work, the fat kept coming on until I was 25% I realised I had cut too many calories and had to start eating again, not intermittent fasting because none of it was working and I was feeling “omg now i have to eat perfectly and hardly anything?” I started eating more, always having breakfast and really eating to reduce stress on my body. The fat came off, but it’s still more difficult to lose the fat than it was pre menopause
At 55 years, I'm about 7 years into menopause & my body fat is 22.5%. I never gained weight in my abdomen before, but it's creeping on in this area now. My visceral fat is 3. I know I need to improve, but I think lowering my calories by just a little...like 200 calories a day....as I believe Dr. Baum mentions here helps me the most. We really do eat more than we think. Right now, I probably need to kick nuts out of my house because I can sooo overeat them.
It is so hard to discern WHO to listen to because there is so much conflicting evidence out there. It’s absolutely driving me crazy. Dr. Mindy pelt claims that you need to lean more into fasting once you are in perimenopause and menopause. I am in the throes of perimenopause and once I started listening to Dr. Peltz and extending my fasting, I feel like my metabolism plummeted! I was an avid runner and very lean up until about six months ago. I am 49 and somehow in the last three months I put on 11 pounds without changing in my diet, I haven’t had the energy to work out and do the HIIT training and running that I used to . The weight is just not coming off. I even try to 36 hour fast two weeks ago and a year ago that would’ve made me very lean, but I didn’t drop 1 pound I felt more exhausted than usual.
@@HH-gv8mx I feel for you! 63 now, last period at 52 and I can say that for me exercising wasn’t the answer. Lowering stress by doing Wim Hof breathing, attention to a Whole Foods diet and circadian rhythms (not eating after sundown), hot baths and hot yoga and infrared sauna to help with toxins all combined to help greatly. It took a few years (😮) but my sleep improved and my stress decreased…and with it the weight fell off only doing my hot-stuff 2-3x week. I had other issues like malabsorption of nutrients from adulthood of alcohol consumption so avoiding that helped the sleep and a compounded vitamin and mineral got my levels back up. If resources allow getting tested for heavy metals and Nutrival and gut testing can steer you in right direction. It was ~$1000 in testing and few hundred each month for supplements but I stopped spending elsewhere and committed to trying that approach for 1+ yr. In that time my progress was good and price went down to only occasional doctor appt/lab. Good luck!
I was appalled to learn that the original recommendations for women around protein was done in the 70’s on older obese men who they fed estrogen. Gross. I am so grateful for these women and their proper research on 50% of the population

The content is absolutely great and super interesting. But what amaized me the most is that two super qualified and informed Doctors in their field are so humble. In their explanation they have mentioned many times "I don't know", "I am not sure", and so on.... When I hear cheap contents on the internet made by influencers or fitness guru, they REALLY believe they know it all. Thank you Dr Lyon for sharing high quality content.
Who is this amazing guest??? What a great segment. Thank you for the wisdom shared and can’t wait to read or even participate in one of those great studies you both are working on. 🙏🏼💕💪🏼
I can't seem to listen to people who "up talk" at the end of every sentence, as if they were posing a question. Want the info but just cannot go with the inflections
Wooo, Pig Sooie, Dr. Baum from another Arkansan! Are you related to the Baum-Walker Stadium people? My biggest worry is developing dementia, so if you ever do research in this area then maybe I can participate in it upon retiring in 2.75 years. 😊
I shall give you a hint; what is the chemical effect of trauma, head injuries and neurological conditions like ADHD on thought organisation, satiety, and muscle mass? How many people have these and are overweight and or obese? What are the effects of prescribed medication for ADHD (like stimulants) in a non addictive individual; along with culturally and ethically holistic lifestyle treatments (ie meditation, somatic yoga and healing massage with regular weight lifting); including other proven clinical interventions; notwithstanding addressing social inequality (ie safe housing, advocation and income, food poverty and early childhood development and elderly care);with contention I also illustrate the predominantly gaslit domains of categorical discrimination (ie racism, ableism, sexism, and global political instability)? You are doing an amazing job Dr Lyon and I'm so very proud of you. Blessing of the season, from your chum in New Zealand🤩
Most people on weight loss meds do not do resistance training or work on protecting or building skeletal muscle. It falls within “the pill for every ill” as I’ve witnessed and coached people with type 2 diabetes and obesity.
I agree. I experience the same thing. I don't knowhow people can eat so much protein in one day, and I only currently weigh 112 lbs. Also I can't do dairy so whey protein, always touted as the very best, is out of the question for me. I use egg white protein but get really tired of it. And vegan protein powders are SO filling.... Challenging to eat right to get and stay healthy and strong!
Finally someone is concerned about our kids. School food is just garbage! Kids will be sedentary if they’re overweight, and cannot move comfortably… it’s just scary
It's kind of wild to discuss obesity, health outcomes, satiety, and increasing skeletal muscle with an obese scientist. It's not too far from when a medical doctor is obese and they start talking about anything to do with health, it's hard to take them seriously.
As an internal medicine physician, I listen to 4 physicians and a PhD on UA-cam, and this 1 1/2 hours continued to repeat " not in my field" and "we don't know" and all sorts of excuses for no commitment. There was no real addition to my knowledge at all, especially for the time spent. No actionable news at all. P.S. I can't believe Dr. Lyons is supporting zocdoc, which has such horrible rules surrounding appointment charges, even to the point of supporting fraud.
I am gobsmacked that you are endorsing AG1, given the scandal of its shady founder, who has no background in health and nutrition. Are you prioritising profit over integrity? Can I trust the other products you are endorsing? This is such a shame because I really love your podcasts and your message, but now I feel rather deceived.
Totally agree! So many people do not do the research on supplements. Andrew Huberman also endorses AG1. I listen to them for the guest info and discern based on a compilation of all my research.

With all due respect, I can’t stand when someone speaks, and they end every single word with a? … mark… Sound.
I tried eating more protein however I get so full that I can’t eat three meals. I def don’t hit 1.2G a day per bodyweight.

Then don't eat three meals, it's not necessary.

I applaud you both but realistically just about zero actionable data in the podcast.

This professor is annoying to listen to, tonation and how she speaks is …
So turn if off, turn down the volume and use cc, or read the transcript. It’s free content and personal criticisms are simply mean.

Very soon we are all about to learn the heavy metals in AG1, stay tuned and stay off it!
Wondering the kick backs you get from all the adverts?? Also if your meal plans had higher fiber you may not need AG1 for your gut health.
That's how podcasters make their money. That's how TV makes it's money.
Omg you mean advertising isn't free??? Say it ain't so
You and I don’t pay her directly so how do you expect her to do this as a job without advertisements?
Eyeroll
Good god - just another vegan attack lol
Not everyone needs fiber…
AG1. Made with ‘natural flavors’ which are not natural. Chemical concoctions. No. No. NO.
AG1 is, at best, overrated. For many, it causes digestive issues.
So expensive. The only people I know of who use AG1 are those who are sponsored.
Full of heavy metals, too.
No animal protein at all, period.
animal protein is where I get my protein. plants are for carbs.
