Our Favorite Flat Composite Pedals Compared and Reviewed, including the new DMR V11

  • As mountain biking has grown, flat pedals have seen a pretty strong resurgence in popularity over clip-in (counterintuitively called clipless) pedals. They’re easier to get used to, they don’t require special footwear (although you definitely benefit from a nice pair of mountain bike shoes), and they are often less expensive than clip-in counterparts.
    In the past, to get a nice platform with a comfortable concave shape and enough pins to grip well, you had to spend $100+. Today, there are a number of really well designed flat pedals out there that use a nylon composite body to drop the cost to almost half that price. Today, we review and compare four of our absolute favorites. Pick up your own set, below.

    Nice comparison. I've personally used all four of these (except I was using alloy Vaults not composite) so I'd like to contribute my opinions as well. Size 12 Five Ten Freerider for reference. Threw in another composite flat I've tried as well in the Nukeproof Electron Evo:
    5. Nukeproof Electron Evo - Certainly felt cheaper than the rest. Had 2 pairs, and on one pair I had the internals got destroyed after riding it lightly on a commuter bike.
    4. RaceFace Chester - Solid pedal, had 2 pairs in the past and never once an issue. However, too small for my feet once I discovered other pedals.
    3. OneUp Composite - Have 2 pairs. Nice wide platform, but IMO not quite as large or comfortable as my number 1. No issues with durability.
    2. DMR Vault (Alloy) - Had 2 pairs. Love the shape. Hate the price, and in general I grew to hate using alloy pedals, especially flats. It seems I always had more issues with pins bending on alloy flat pedals than I ever did on composites. And that god awful sound they make when they hit a rock. And the loss of color after only a couple months from rock strikes. May try them in composite someday but I love my:
    1. Deity Deftrap - These things are incredible. Huge platform, perfect for my feet. The composite they use really does feel high quality, a little better than all the rest. The color selection is impeccable and the ability to perfectly match them to my grips takes them to another level (I recommend the Supracush for larger hands. SO SOFT!). I'm definitely getting backup pairs of these.

    Great review with lots of relevant detail and none of the marketing BS. Its refreshing to get an honest and informed opinion. I love your content.
    For what its worth Ive tried a few so for what its worth ... on a size 11 1/2 foot.
    Chesters are nice but small
    DMR V8 same, nice but a bit small, but a good concave dish you can feel.
    One Up - did not like the convex. Tried to give them some time but still dont like the feel at least with my softer shoes. Being convex the pins are also a bit more vulnerable to bending.
    Kona Wah Wah 2 - friggin loved them. Nice wide and stable. The large crank side berring doesnt interfere and keeps you from scuffing your cranks if your the type who cares.
    You got me intrigued so i might just have to try the Diety

      I'd say give the Deftraps a go. I think the V11's are the grippiest I've used, but the Deftraps are right there, and the platform is definitely larger.

    I think the OneUps do the convex shape on purpose, with the thought that you place the center of your pedal right behind the ball of your foot (complimenting the arch of you foot) and that you scoop more with flats.
    I’m with you though that I don’t notice much of a difference between my oneups and my crankbrother stamps. I just like the large platforms.

    Good video! Clipless refers to the pedals not using toe-clips/toe straps, (even though you are clipped in with cleats), i guess it made more sense to name them that when toe-clips were more popular.

  • @vomErsten
    @vomErsten 3 роки тому +1

    I wonder when Race Face will get around to updating their pedal line. The Chester could use a few improvements to platform size, even as somebody who wears a Five-Ten Freerider in US size 8 I find it hard to get into and maintain a comfortable footing on it and I think the Deftrap is going to eat its lunch in a big way. For their alloys, the Atlas has a very spotty track-record with bearing longevity and that was enough to keep me away from them. I ended up with Blade Runners, even though I would have preferred the Atlas to match the rest of my kit.

      I have a size 10.5 foot. And I liked the grip on the Chesters that I had on my hardtail. But when I got my full suspension I got the deftraps. And they provide a better platform for my feet. And they grip alittle better than the chesters too.

    So im usually clipped in on trails i just want flat pedals to do bunnyhopps, wheelies so i want it for like "street tricks" plus if i find good jumping spot somewhere but i will dont go to rough mtb trails with it and i dont want it to be so expensive, what pedals do you recommend for me? The Chesters! Their platform is phenomenal for smaller feet, and the pedals are quite grippy and very durable (and serviceable).

      We don't have a ton of colors in stock, so a great second option (a little more expensive, so I didn't recommend them first) is of course the OneUp Composite. It's what I have on my dirt jumper:

    What's your guys's take on the pedaling innovations flat pedals? Is there anything beneficial that a midfoot pedal platform spanning from one side of the arch to the other that the current industry Norm ball of the foot pedal platform doesn't offer? I've never had a chance to try them but I could see how that would be more stable and efficient compared to the industry Norm ball of the foot pedal platform

      You know, I haven't tried them, although I have read up on them. He makes compelling arguments, and honestly when you get used to them I'm sure they're just fine, but I tend to think of the movement of my ankles as helping with bump absorption.

    • @asceticscorpio972
      @asceticscorpio972 3 роки тому

      @@FanatikBikeCo That's actually a good point. I hadn't considered how a super long platform centered on the midfoot rather than the ball totally caps your range of movement when it comes to dropping your heels . . . His arguments (especially that one University study from Berkeley back in 2008 he will NOT shut up about) are all very compelling whether the platform is centered around the mid or ball of the foot I really like the dimensions of their pedals. The length width and thickness is pretty much perfect in my eyes. The one thing that always keeps me on my trusty Crank Bros Mallet 3s is the help they provide climbing. Sure pulling your foot up the back stroke of a pedal cycle does not make you any faster but it does utilize a whole different group of leg muscles then just pushing on the downstroke, and it's the sharing of the burden of climbing between those different muscle groups that I hella depend on to get me to the top. . . . If I have access to a chair lift or some kind of shuttle service then I would totally rock flats and they would most likely be the pedaling innovations. Up until a month ago I had spent 16 months on a 2016 Scott Genius LT 710 (the Ransom before the Ransom so 170mm f/r) and then a month ago I sold it and bought a 2018 alloy Patrol which in my opinion climbs way better than the '16 Genius LT (I had long ago ditched the twin lock in favor of a Fox factory DPX2 and Öhlins RXF 36 EVO) but still I rely on the SPDs to maintain a high enough cadence to sit and spin, motoring to the top.

    I’m primarily a clipless rider (love my speciale 12’s) but I got a set of flats to break some bad habits and regain some of my bmx skills. I got the oneup pedals because I’ve just enjoyed everything they’ve made so far but I find my foot rolling off of them in a forward motion. It’s happened a few times now and put me in some potentially bad situations. Anyone else have that issue, is it the pedal or just me? Would something like the DMR with the concave shape be better for riders who are used to their foot being more rearward from using clips? I don’t ride with ball over axle, my cleats are set further back but that still doesn’t put my arch over the spindle as I see some riders with flats do. Also I’m 10.5 men’s if that helps recommendations.

    • @FanatikBikeCo
      @FanatikBikeCo  3 роки тому

      Hmm, I wonder if it has more to do with foot placement. I couldn't quite tell from your comment, where have you been putting your feet? I ride with the ball of my foot roughly on top of the axle, maybe a bit forward of that.
      Regarding concavity, that is more of a comfort thing. It won't change how well your foot sticks to the pedal, or prevent rolling on it's own.
      Lastly, how long have you been riding the flat pedals? I wonder if it's simply a matter of practice. Maybe you have some ingrained techniques from clipless pedals that are resulting in that, which will simply disappear with time.
