For those asking about battery life, it was a misstep not to include it, but I also would've said it is average for a 12th-gen Intel Chromebook. I routinely saw 7-9 hours of use with screen brightness set at about 40% (which is 250-300 nits on this display). It wasn't a battery champ, but it was also just as good as any other Chromebook we've reviewed with a 12th-gen Intel chip inside. In no reality did I ever see battery life as bad as what the Verge reported, so I don't know what's happening there. My assumption is with a screen this bright, the temptation is to crank the brightness up a bit more than you normally would when not attached to a charger, and that led to some poor battery life for some reviewers. Is worth noting that there are plenty of other reviews on the internet that claim 9-10 hours of battery life on a standard rundown with the Chromebook average around 9.5 hours. I'm not entirely sure where these reports of this atrocious battery life are coming from, but that was not my experience. Also we goofed up on AUE. It should read June 2030.
We all know that, with The Verge, if it's not made by Apple they're gonna find - or fabricate - SOMEthing supposedly hugely wrong with a device - yet, they'll gloss over any imperfections with Apple devices. This HP looks awesome!
This is why it makes no sense to test battery life with screen brightness standardised to a percentage of full brightness. Why do reviewers not realise that? 50% brightness in one machine can be completely different to the same in another, disadvantaging the machine that can reach a higher brightness.

I asked on the HP website for ordering this Chromebook about stylus support. I tried to word my question carefully - would the Dragonfly Pro recognize a stylus properly such that the ChromeOS stylus tools could be utilized? Someone named "HP Team Grant" answered the following: "Yes, the HP Rechargeable USI Pen will be compatible with this DragonFly Pro Chromebook." Robby I'd love it if you could check back with any contacts you have at HP and confirm this. Odd as it may seem, for some of us the lack of true stylus support will be the deal breaker.
Replying to my own comment here. Earlier this week I got a notice from HP that a new answer was left to my question about stylus support. It was from the same "account" name HP Team Grant, but the new message states that the HP Dragonfly Pro Chromebook will NOT work with a stylus, so it seems the mystery is solved. For ME, this will be the dealbreaker. I was very much on the fence about spending this much money for a Chromebook, and one which isn't a convertible - but the stylus tipped me over into the "NO" column.

I'll be looking to upgrade later this year, I just need to get over the HP logo that I personally don't love. Thank you for all the great content.
The problem is an Intel CPU. Best to avoid those these days; especially in laptops. They literally use 2-4x the power of AMD chips in the same tasks and tend to run very hot. Maybe if this chromebook came with some special cut down model that stayed cool.... but with the i5; it just is too fat and hot to be "premium".

I'll ditch this and get the HP! Any comparison of the keyboard to the Pixelbook Go. Hope you had a nice anniversary testing the speakers on the Chromebook ;)
If you won't be happy with a Chromebook from Asus, HP, or any other brand, at least try Acer! Okay, I am living in Germany, so even the pixel book go, wasn't an option for me, because I just couldn't by it! Now I have an Acer device, QHD Display, foldable screen,I mean, I could use as a tablet as well! And not only that! The one I bought was with stylos pen, which was important for me! I could even bring down the price on the telephone, wich was almost 15% off, or discount, if you will! I am still happy with it!😅😀
Yes, quoting the marketing material is not helpful as this appears to have sub-par battery life inline with the chip and config. That is a BIG deal-breaker to users, no matter what the rest does.

@@tallperson117 that sounds terrible. If HP couldn't get at least 10 hours of video playback on a portable laptop in 2023 that's a huge L in my books. Even my 2017 Chromebook could do longer
Lovely piece of kit but my Pixelbook 4K/16GB/i7 still runs like a beast and its speakers, keyboard and trackpad remain top notch, so this is not tempting. Also, my Pixelbook has 8-9hrs consistent battery life doing browser stuff, and this HP is rumoured to be around half this, according to some reviews. Hopefully, a firmware update will fix that. Amazing even after all these years the Pixelbook Go still competes well with 2023 stuff.
The 2017 Pixelbook remains the best industry design and built laptop I have ever owned with the only downside being having only two USB-C ports. I still love mine and I lament that soon approaching EOL Chrome support for the device.
I agree with you. I just bought another PBG, because I gave the previous one to my brother. I got it new. I5, 16GG, 128GB. This thing is still a beast. I'll see what will happen on 06/2026🤷🏽♂️
I still love my pixelbookGO too. But I need a second Chromebook and this HP is it. There has been nothing else out there that has even tempted me, that even remotely had a made-by-Google-vibe to it. Till now.
I have the HP Dragonfly Elite Chromebook, and I like it a lot. How much better is this one than that? In other words, should I consider getting this or is my Elite just as good?
Thank you so much for this video. I have a HP Chromebook and white touchscreen with a backlit keyboard that I bought about four or five years ago and then I recently upgraded and bought a MacBook Pro and I absolutely hate it. I hate the feeling of it I don’t like the shortness of the keyboard I don’t like how big the trackpad is and I absolutely do not like the fact that there is no touchscreen. I am going to return it and I’m going to buy this laptop. I love that it comes in white, I also love the feeling of HP chrome books as I think they are spectacular and they are light weights. I will be glad to see a vivid screen and better speaker quality for sure. Thank you so much for this video.
Man, you made me love this thing in first 100 seconds of this video... If I get one HP should pay you some commission. Thanks for great, enthusiastic comments.
Rob can you do a comparison video between the HP Dragonfly Pro and the Acer Chromebook Spin 714. I think this matchup is very close with the acer coming out on top with a few things such as the built in pen that charges on the chromebook. I think it would be a very fair comparison video.
Thanks for pointing out the most important thing. A premium Chromebook like this is not about features and killer specs. It's about the look and feel of it, the attention to detail. When you use something daily for 3-5 years, you want it to be durable and look really nice. That's the whole point of these things.
Nice review; the shot near the beginning, with the lids opening was really creative. I appreciate the circle-back on battery performance. Would be interested to hear theories on the podcast why this sold-out virtually on arrival. Optimist thinks HP underestimated demand. Pessimist says this is a margin-loser for HP (maybe they lose money on each unit produced) and exists as a vehicle for brand publicity, and they’ve never planned to make it widely available in Chrome OS form.
The good news is that 4 months later, HP has both colors back in stock on their website. I am happy that OEMs are making these premium Chromebooks but i am more of a cheap Chromebook guy. I have used my first gen Lenovo duet so much that the fabric is peeling off. If I was going to spend $1000 on a laptop, I would get an M1 macbook air but different people have different needs and schools especially have money to spend on higher end devices with ChromeOS for teachers and administration.
HP Dragonfly Pro is a great Chromebook. I especially like its designed in performance and build quality, plus there are only two SKUs, black or white. The price seems resonable for what you get. Would I buy one? No, because it's not a convertible / flip device and does not have USI pen support. If it included both the latter functionality, then it would be the perfect Chromebook and I would buy it in a heartbeat. Iam surprised that Google forgot about what made their Pixelbook so good, the convertible form factor with pen support.
I'll make a separate post on this but I asked on the HP website for this device whether it has true stylus support (i.e. the ability to recognize a stylus and use the stylus tools). An HP engineer responded "Yes, the HP Rechargeable USI Pen will be compatible with this DragonFly Pro Chromebook." Personally I would like someone else to be the guinea pig though.
@@educ6632 Yes, that's most likely the US only. The HP Elite dragonfly Pro Chromebook is also still not available in Canada. Pretty much all the good Chromebooks aren't available in Canada. Seems like none of these companies care about the Chromebook market in Canada. At least Google made the Pixelbook available in Canada!
Like others have commented, I think this could have been a convertible with little compromise to the overall design. I also think there's room for a version with an i3 CPU, 8GB RAM, and 128GB SSD. Even at those specs, running ChromeOS, the laptop would still be fast and still feel premium.
@@sgodsellify Cores dont matter as much as the processors clock speed which will impact a lot more than cores will especially when you are not video editing or doing anything that loads a lot of cores. Which is why AMD processors with 6 cores and 12 threads beat intel processors with similar core amounts or even 16 cores or threads as they are frequently clocked significantly higher and have a lot more cache so amd processors are able to do a hell of a lot more at once.
Why no mention of the actual battery life? Other review outlets are claiming it's around 2.5 hours. You having a review unit and not mentioning this glaring issue makes this video seem like more of an advertisement than a review.
If you looked at this video then it was posted at 11.5 hours of battery life. Clearly you hate HP, especially when battery life would not be even close to 2.5 hours. So Tallperson you are a troll.
@@sgodsellify ?? That's HP's claimed battery, many other outlet that has reviewed this laptop is citing real world battery life between 2.5-3.5 hours. I.e. he's citing HP's claims without testing them himself. You know, like what a reviewer is supposed to do when they're reviewing a product.
@@tallperson117the HP Dragonfly Pro Chromebook from other sites, like TechRadar said that it gets 9 hours 17 minutes web browsing, and 6 hours watching movies. Other sites have given roughly the same battery life.
I've seen one outlet, The Verge, mention 2.5 hours. I've read 3 other reviews that either didn't mention it, (4 if you add this one) or said it was middle of the road battery life but given how amazing the display is that is to be expected. My guess is the Verge unit or tester was the issue as it's not something other reviewers are seeing.
Given how much time and money HP put into developing and promoting this device, I find it absolutely bizarre that it's not available. Anywhere. And there are no pre-orders or future availability dates at the moment. That's a monumental misstep.
Whoa, no USI support ... that was a surprising one... I mean ... I do have 2 convertible chromebooks and both are USI compatible and even with this not being a convertible I would be alright with using it (as 90% of the time my chromebooks are in laptop form anyway) but that remaining 10% ... the USI pen comes in VERY handy for tasks which I just can't reliably do with my finger ... like marking up screenshots when explaining change requests and things like that. Those things are made sooooo easy by a pen ... and there's no pen with this one? I mean I'm fine if I need to buy a *specific* pen fo the laptop ... but no pen at all? that's a bit shocking. Regardless of that I might still get it if it comes to the UK (which for some reason feel like a dogs breakfast with HP lately)
Hi, Robby. I am looking for a laptop preferably HP which will help my sister with basic school work and let her watch movies, store information and ease the overall school load. The brightness needs to be good and enough ports should be available to plug everything in. My budget is about Rs 40000 to 50000 INR/400- 500 GBP (approx). Could you please kindly suggest some laptops?
What is pissing me off tf I keep checking their website for the White Version, and they got only the Black ones they keep re stocking, put out all the laptops. I have called they say they don't know the launch date put keep restocking the black ones , will Amazon have this ?
One thing I want to learn is what the pro use cases of chrome os are there's already good hardware but what can I get done with the software over something like a Mac or Windows machine
Question for those with this device: Does the LED backlit keyboard fully illuminate the keys? As in, no dead spots? My Pixelbook backlit keyboard, out of the box, has crummy backlit keys. Thanks!
if i hate the Elite (last gen dragonfly chromebox) any chance id like the Pro? my elite overheats and has wake up problems and the fan is annoying. (I tried the acer gaming one too, fan was nicer but hp felt nicer for day to day)
I'm curious what you think regarding this Chromebook versus a low-cost Windows laptop. When you get to $1,000 it makes it difficult to see why you wouldn't just get a Windows machine.
Finally looked good with the support that Chrome OS has been lacking. Frustrating when trying to go to geek squad and they know almost nothing about Chromebooks. Can't wait till see this in person
I love the idea of a premium build Chromebook and wish Google still made the Pixel book Go as I'd buy one now. Buy why would you can buy a $1000 Chromebook when you can buy a Macbook Air for the same money?
Id love to see videos like this with a comparable spec sheet option. Another chromebook with the same CPU, ram, feature set almost identical, to compare where that extra money goes in one video.
This is such a better value than the HP Elite Dragonfly Chromebook. I prefer 3:2 but this has more ram, a better screen and a better trackpad. Can't wait!
Just spoke with HP and they said nothing about the warranty just a standard one year warranty. Also the are out of stock already and nothing at Best Buy which I thought this was targeted for.
Looks great, still not enough to make me abandon my Samsung 4+ but that backlit keyboard may make me consider it if it's still available when mine is at the end of it's life.
I have an almost 2 year old HP 360 with an i3 and 8gb of ram. It runs everything and bench marks faster or just below newer Chromebooks. If I’m going to upgrade I’m gonna need a Chromebook that blows the one I have out of the water. This maybe it. $999 it kinda steep since I only paid $360 for the one I have.
I really like Chromebooks, but until hardware such as BlackMagic ATEMs are supported I still have to rely on PC's or Macbooks. Similarly software such as video editors need to be supported. As a result of these shortfalls, I could no justify £1000 on a Chromebook.
Everything else being pretty top-notch, it's so sad they cheaped-out on no USI pen support... why would they do all this then chunk it big time there!?!? SMH
That's quite the piece of hardware, and at a very solid price point, as well. Battery life is probably the biggest knock against it, but that super bright screen exacts a heavy toll on the battery, I imagine.
It's a great Chromebook, but I still want Google to make a new Pixelbook. If Google really wants Chrome to compete with the other big-boy operating systems, they need to believe in it too.
i agree , i have a pixelbook go & i love this wee thing , best laptop i've ever owned . Google should do a PBG2 , this HP might have a great build quality but it's not a pixelbook .
Unlikely due to EU costs, and why many OEMs are no longer releasing in Europe. The EU is just OTT with its rules and regs, the high VAT costs and poor exchange rates, make an EU release unlikely.

I agree with you. I just bought another PBG, because I gave the previous one to my brother. I got it new. I5, 16GG, 128GB. This thing is still a beast. I'll see what will happen on 06/2026🤷🏽♂️
TechRadar said that it gets 9 hours and 17 minutes in browsing.
I still love my pixelbookGO too. But I need a second Chromebook and this HP is it. There has been nothing else out there that has even tempted me, that even remotely had a made-by-Google-vibe to it. Till now.
@@hsv361 I'll get it. In 2026 🤷🏽♂️
Easily my next chromebook. My Pixelbook needs a good replacement and this looks to be it.
Getting it in that ceramic white easily
I have the HP Dragonfly Elite Chromebook, and I like it a lot. How much better is this one than that? In other words, should I consider getting this or is my Elite just as good?
if your elite is a half a pound lighter, you are ahead of the game. this one adds nothing to chromebook life.
How was the battery life in your tests? Every other outlet on the web says the battery on here is terrible
Hi Robby. As a great fan from the UK do you have any idea when it will be available over here? I’ve tried to find some info, but no luck. Thanks mate
Yep need release date for Europe
Any idea of UK release date from your HP contacts?
Thanks for pointing out the most important thing. A premium Chromebook like this is not about features and killer specs. It's about the look and feel of it, the attention to detail. When you use something daily for 3-5 years, you want it to be durable and look really nice. That's the whole point of these things.
when is the chromebook with gpu?
This looks absolutely amazing, my next chromebook for sure!
How did you comment before the video was uploaded
Nice review; the shot near the beginning, with the lids opening was really creative. I appreciate the circle-back on battery performance.
Would be interested to hear theories on the podcast why this sold-out virtually on arrival. Optimist thinks HP underestimated demand. Pessimist says this is a margin-loser for HP (maybe they lose money on each unit produced) and exists as a vehicle for brand publicity, and they’ve never planned to make it widely available in Chrome OS form.
Please ignore the prior comment, I fell asleep after work and this is what happened.
@@meandmyEV 11/15/23 Out of stock for the last few weeks.
An HP engineer responded "Yes, the HP Rechargeable USI Pen will be compatible with this DragonFly Pro Chromebook."
Personally I would like someone else to be the guinea pig though.
Surely higher than 60 hz screen?
Great video.🤝🏼In my view, this is the best Chromebook since (2015) Google HP Chromebook 2.
Great video and good information. However, nothing was mentioned about availability. Will this device be available in Canada? If so, when?
When he showed the hardware specs, it said June 2023, but I guess that's probably USA
I should say the premium Chromebook market is what Manufacturers don't seem to care about in Canada.
What do you think about the Lenovo Thinkpad C14 Chromebook? The specs are off the chart
Like others have commented, I think this could have been a convertible with little compromise to the overall design. I also think there's room for a version with an i3 CPU, 8GB RAM, and 128GB SSD. Even at those specs, running ChromeOS, the laptop would still be fast and still feel premium.
It has the i5-1235U SoC, which has 10 cores, and 12 threads.
@@sgodsellify I'm aware. I'm saying there's room for a lower spec... and lower cost version of this device.
I agree completely. This is more of an ad than an objective review and I'm disappointed
I've seen one outlet, The Verge, mention 2.5 hours. I've read 3 other reviews that either didn't mention it, (4 if you add this one) or said it was middle of the road battery life but given how amazing the display is that is to be expected. My guess is the Verge unit or tester was the issue as it's not something other reviewers are seeing.
battery life?
okay I'm sold, can't afford the elite dragon, just in time saw your this videos. I'm getting one.
Where do you buy these?? I can't find them anywhere
HP only I think, in the US - no news about UK release. Very frustrating!
Given how much time and money HP put into developing and promoting this device, I find it absolutely bizarre that it's not available. Anywhere. And there are no pre-orders or future availability dates at the moment. That's a monumental misstep.
This has gotta be the most beautiful Chromebook I ever seen
video starts at 4:16
Is the support system require you to have Google Workspace subscription?
How's the keyboard? the keyboard is the most important feature on my pixel book
This laptop is just BEGGING for an OLED variant. Absolutely gorgeous.
That seem like a great chromebook. Question though. Do you know if it is able to play and or edit 4k video?
I've seen a couple of reviews that mention a narrow viewing angle. Did you experience any of that?
Finally, a Chromebook that could actually replace my aging pixelbookGO (which I love loved). This new HP is the one.
I would like to see a comparison between the HP Dragonfly Pro Chromebook vs the ASUS CX34 Vibe Flip.
Sweet review. Thanks!
One thing I want to learn is what the pro use cases of chrome os are there's already good hardware but what can I get done with the software over something like a Mac or Windows machine
It seems like this weighs quite a bit more than the pixelbook go. Like 30 percent more. Does this weight affect portability?
Yes, it does
Question for those with this device: Does the LED backlit keyboard fully illuminate the keys? As in, no dead spots? My Pixelbook backlit keyboard, out of the box, has crummy backlit keys. Thanks!
if i hate the Elite (last gen dragonfly chromebox) any chance id like the Pro?
my elite overheats and has wake up problems and the fan is annoying. (I tried the acer gaming one too, fan was nicer but hp felt nicer for day to day)
Hi are you selling this chromebook after reviewing it?
How many hertz is the display(what's the refresh rate)? Can't find that info anywhere
Hey, is the Dragonfly G4 Chomebook coming?
What's the refresh rate?
Whats the battery like?
Will there be a pixel book go 2? Will the life span of chromebooks be extended beyond 5 years?
make video review for parallels on Chromebook + the setup please... 🥺
What about AUE? I have Dell Chromebook and it hit AUE after few months.
I'm curious what you think regarding this Chromebook versus a low-cost Windows laptop. When you get to $1,000 it makes it difficult to see why you wouldn't just get a Windows machine.
How does this compare to the elite?
How does it compare against the Samsung Chromebooks?
Does HP usi stylus works with HP Chromebook 14a ??
How well does it run lumafusion?
I have a very cheap Lenovo Chromebook. It does everything I need. The only reason I'm considering a premium model is the new 10-year update policy.
i own the hp g1 along with 2 toshiba and 3 acer chromebooks. can i trade them in?
Release date?
Looks great, still not enough to make me abandon my Samsung 4+ but that backlit keyboard may make me consider it if it's still available when mine is at the end of it's life.
When are they going to release this though. They talk about it a lot for sure.
AUE Jun 2023 according to your spec sheet ? Must be 2030 surely
Hmmm - maybe a replacement for my venerable Samsung Chromebook Pro (still one of the best looking Chromebooks, IMHO)?
I want to buy it used next year
I really like Chromebooks, but until hardware such as BlackMagic ATEMs are supported I still have to rely on PC's or Macbooks. Similarly software such as video editors need to be supported. As a result of these shortfalls, I could no justify £1000 on a Chromebook.
Everything else being pretty top-notch, it's so sad they cheaped-out on no USI pen support... why would they do all this then chunk it big time there!?!? SMH
ill buy this when it's less than half the price, that white one looks good to replace my chromebook plus. it will match my snow white hhkb keyboard.
That's quite the piece of hardware, and at a very solid price point, as well. Battery life is probably the biggest knock against it, but that super bright screen exacts a heavy toll on the battery, I imagine.
The poor battery life is WITH them toning the screen down. I'm sure it gets like 1-2 hours of battery life with the screen at max.
Hooooooow doesn't it have USI stylus support.....😢
Please do a little more on CB's that have LTE/5G onboard and how they perform in real world.
Please?
It's a great Chromebook, but I still want Google to make a new Pixelbook. If Google really wants Chrome to compete with the other big-boy operating systems, they need to believe in it too.
i agree , i have a pixelbook go & i love this wee thing , best laptop i've ever owned . Google should do a PBG2 , this HP might have a great build quality but it's not a pixelbook .
Will it be available in Europe, Germany?
Unlikely due to EU costs, and why many OEMs are no longer releasing in Europe. The EU is just OTT with its rules and regs, the high VAT costs and poor exchange rates, make an EU release unlikely.
@@andyH_England Thanks, although I don't like your answer. You're likely right.
@@RaphaelTriemer I just Googled it and not one rumour that it is coming over here☹️
It won't said their initial press release.
That sucks. We need it
