In this episode Daniel and Mick welcome our friend and all-round awesome guitar player, Ariel Posen, to the show. Ariel is from Canada and plays in one of our favourite bands, The Brothers Landreth (among many other gigs, sessions, tours and projects). And he’s just moved to Ireland.
We wanted to do something on slide guitar and as neither of us play slide, this was just the perfect opportunity…
During the video we discuss effects including overdrive, compression, tremolo, reverb and delay as they relate to slide tones and approaches. It’s not a lesson or a manifesto on the art of slide, more a discussion with a few laughs along the way.

Funny how nobody understood the Star Trek's phasers reference when Ariel said that he liked to set his overdrives to "stun" :) Fantastic episode! Keep it up guys.
Michał Mieluch Yeah that reference went straight over their heads. No trekkies there. 😂. Figured someone else noticed that...
Best episode ever! Ariel's such a class act, amazing player and seems like a lovely guy. Such tone and taste. Thank you so much for arranging this, very inspiring.
Very kind words Martin. Glad you enjoyed it. Cheers!
Your tone is absolutely amazing. I understand that tone comes mostly from the hands, but I really like to know what pickups you have in that SoCo LC. Best regards and thank you.
Those are Throback SLE 101 pick ups. PAF voiced..
Thank you for the quick reply. I really appreciate it.
Just recently discovered the Bros. Landreth, they are amazing, great to hear and see such an inspiring slide player at That Pedal Show, Ariel sounded amazing, no matter what pedals were used, so maybe another lesson from this show: Practice more, spend less time worrying about your gear : )
+Sören Jordan We wouldn't disagree Sören. However, a really inspiring tone can push that playing on ever further. Thanks for watching!
While I agree that it's the player, not the gear, gear can inspire the player and thus make him play better. That's how it works for me
Cheers man. Glad you enjoyed it.
I made the same face watching this on a computer that Dan and Mick made when 7:02 came around. Great vid again guys!
Ariel's playing stops me in my tracks every time. Incredible! It's great to see other musicians floored by his talent and humility too!
That intro by Ariel was absolutely gorgeous
the split second before Mick said "whoa, we went to unmanageable there" I was thinking HOLY CRAP THAT'S THE GREATEST ELECTRIC SLIDE TONE I'VE EVER HEARD
Also, I love Dan's "Ah yeah!!" face and Mick's "This is AWEsome!" face.
Nice one guys. What a beautiful player Ariel is. More than licks, melodies and artful phrasing just flow out of him.
6:03 exactly describes how I use my amp these days- crank it to 10 for your over the top solo sound that cuts through the band, then dial your guitar back from there. You get everything that the amp is capable of at your fingertips.
We can't talk about slide playing without mentioning the great Jack Pearson. His technique on slide guitar is impeccable.
No Way!! I had the privilege of listening to Ariel play and sing with All the King's Men in Winnipeg on more than one occasion. I wondered what would become of his musical career because he has a great voice and great tone. What a nice surprise. Thanks for the video!
Great stuff! It's like christmas every week when you guys put out a new episode!
It's great to see two great players in complete awe watching Ariel playing. This video made my day!
What amazed me about this and the Andertons video is how quickly I recognized that monster tone, and how much the playing blew me away! I love these guys, I hope they get real far out there :)
Thanks guys for having Ariel on. I saw him with Bros Landreth last year in Nashville and they were amazing!!! What a treat. Keep rockin' guys and another great show!
Right on Randall! Whereabouts in Nashville? Thanks for the kind words.
Hey Ariel. I saw you guys at City Winery. I was sitting right up next to the stage, literally the best seat in the house. You guys were awesome. Next time you tour anywhere in the Southeast, the wife and I are headed to see you.
That Slide Rig compressor just takes it right into lap/pedal steel territory. Absolutely stunning. And those behind-the-slide licks really make it sound like a pedal steel.
The best episode you guys have ever done. Thanks!
Thanks! I was so waiting for the Thorpy Muffroom Cloud to be added and used by the slide player. That fuzz is the one that could really blew everyone's mind up! Slide guitar with the Muffroom is just unbelievably good.
Its SO cool to see players as experienced as Dan and Mick are being exited to learn something new, like kids in a candy store. Just like myself every Saturday morning watching the show. Just goes to show you never stop learning and that is one of the awesome things about playing. Thanks guys great episode !!!!
+Robert Button Cheers Robert - yep, we never stop learning. It's a lifelong journey this guitar lark! Thanks for watching.
I was lucky enough to grow up in Nashville, and many moons ago had the privilege to hang out and Jam in studios with cats that's were stellar players...so far above me. I recall times sitting on an amp and just enjoying the "process". Thank you for showing the reciprocity inherent to our passion...the camaraderie that these slabs of wood and wire foster is a special thing; if you are sincere regarding music, you are never too old to learn-thanks for reminding us of that. Well done as always.
Oh crap. A paste to some clerical students got punched in when editing. I'm so very sorry! Please disregard the ecclesiastical stuff! 😬
A great video. Ariel is a fabulous player and it was fascinating to hear the different mixes of pedals. I'm a big fan of Lowell George and love compression (I have Slide Rig serial number 008!) and also love tremolo (Ry Cooper's "Feeling Bad Blues" is one of my favourite slide tunes). I also use reverb from my Blues Junior to get a slightly "spacy" effect. Bring back Ariel for more videos!
Incredible playing. On of my favorite episodes yet.
I've only been mucking around with slide guitar for a few years and had never thought about the part pedals could play. I really really enjoyed this episode especially listening, watching and the the wisdom of Ariel. Thank you all.
Cheers William!
Love the look on Micks face when Ariel is playing ... I pull that same face when listening to Mick play
+davemis40 Ah bless you Dave. ''Tis all a journey for sure!
+That Pedal Show Had the pleasure of watching Ariel and Joey live at the Borderline ... it was incredible to watch the 2 play together .. they still left plenty of space for the vocals to shine.
First, I love the show, guys. Just makes my day. Every day. Secondly, this video was exceptional. I've been playing for 16 years and have been so afraid of the slide, but this just really set a fire under me, so thank you. I have to say also to Ariel: Dude, you've got it. In an ocean of guitar players, you stand apart. Thanks for the inspiration, gentlemen.
That was a great episode, such nice tones and playing. Great job!
Love Ariel's playing and some great tones from those amp and pedal combinations.
Thanks for this one gents. Very informative! Love Dan's expressions... always cracks me up!
Ariel Posen, what an amazing guitarist and nice cool guy. That Pedal Show is the best: Mick and Dan you guys rock, I learn something new everyday.
I’m with Mick... completely fascinated but never really put much effort into slide. But I could listen to Ariel and Joey play slide all day and be totally happy. Oh and that Collings... daaaaamn!!!
I was half expecting Dan to start the Vic and Bob "Thigh rubbing during this episode". Fantastic soul to the slide playing there. Need to find some Ariel recordings.
Loved this episode! Great idea to bring in awesome players and talk gear.
Slide is such a challenge for me. It's all about the muting. And impossible to do it right without fingerpicking.
And the behind the slide Sonny Landreth stuff is mindblowing.
You guys are as always, a true pleasure to watch. Have to say, that Ariel seems as such a nice and humble person. And boy, what an amazing musician playing guitar guy he is. You always make my day...
It's great to see two great guitar players in complete awe watching Ariel playing. This video made my day! :)
That was fascinating - some glorious tones and I learned a lot. Interesting to see Dan so distracted as he worked things out. I`ve been fascinated with slide guitar and open tunings since watching Dickey Betts with The Allman Brothers Band over 40 years ago and then progressed ( many years later ) to Derek Trucks. Guitarists like Trucks and the new guys like Ariel and Joey Landreth have taken slide guitar to news levels of versatility and added so much to the tonal palette. Another excellent show guys - thankyou.
That was great! Love the show and watch every week, but that was really special. Thanks fellas and special thanks to Ariel.
Incredible Ariel. Thanks for Sharing.
You guys are my outlet for finding phenomenal musicians. First Matt Schofield now this guy!
Cheers man.
Ariel Posen
Gunner Wood
My favourite is a thick glass slide, but Ariel sure makes his brass slide sound great. I think from darkest to brightest, it's glass, ceramic, brass, chrome.
Missed this one, nice :). Had the pleasure of doing sound for Ariel for a show in Brighton UK. Lovely night behind the desk, great band and all.
What a great show, Ariel was superb. May have to get me one of them there slides and have a try. Some top knob twiddling by Dan. Thanks to all 3 of you.
Lovely! I must say, nice licks at the end, Dan. And of course, Ariel was amazing!
Way to represent the 'Peg and nice Dawes shirt. Dan, loved my GigRig and then my G2. Big fan of your stuff. Watch the show faithfully.
Winnipeg pride!
Bloody chuffing love this episode. Such a cool vibe and awesome tones. Nice one fellas. Have just bought back my old telecaster after a year of pestering - time to raise the action and find some brass pipes :-)
Yes! What an awsome guitarist! :D Maybe link to some of his playing in the description? (for those of us to lazy to type his name in search)
Adding on to the mention of non-synced tremelo, could you guys do a show about non-synced/non-tap tempo effects in general? Like delay, tremelo, and modulations?
Austin Arthur, using timed effects out of time - I like it!
As someone else wrote it's all about the muting. both left and right hand muting. it's how i pick a slide player from a regular player. like bass players they always muting strings that they don't want ringing. great show.
My favourite slide video ever...and not just cus I'm from Canadia...Amazing playing tone and tips Ariel...I love playing slide and use open tunings sometimes but mostly use standard tuning...thanks for the tips, and insight into your use of gear...very helpful...
+Mike Nova yep, we love Ariel, just all round awesomeness
Ariel is the business......great addition to the show. Very musical!
Great video. That slide guy is brilliant.
It's hilarious watching Mick and Dan in an almost perpetual state of stank face throughout this video. I have to admit, I was joining in for most of it!
love when dan and mick give each other that man love look!
Ive been in the dark to this glorious man....thank you tps and andertons to bringing him to my attention
This is my favorite episode. Great Q&A, and Ariel answered the questions with nice examples of playing, and touch, and style. If he comes back, ask him about wah, and volume pedals... and germanium fuzz face please.
To me at least, slide always looks easy, but impossibe to make it sound like music. Beautiful beautiful sounds from Ariel. Excellent show guys, cheers.

Their reactions are almost as amazing as the playing! 😂😂
awesome show! that slide sound..... it, like that srv Texas sweep thing, is a very unique sound (technic) that can leave even veteran players envious. It really just comes down to we are all different and have invested our time in our own style. So, now its time to break out the slide and do some homework cuz that just sounds AMAZING!
Wow mind well and truly blown! Never knew slide could be so cool!
This video has made me question all of the time I have wasted learning regular guitar, when I should have been learning slide! Absolutely amazing playing. Great video guys. One of the best yet
Wow, great player and great sounds!! Thanks guys!!
Nice one. Made me set up my spare Strat for slide. Thanks guys.
Awesome.
Bonus points for the Dawes t-shirt!
Amazing slide player! Very humble too!
Best part of the video: "9 hours later" Lol! Good luck Daniel! You guys rock!
Dan is like a pedal sommelier. Fantastic slide playing too. I'm also in the "playing 25 years, can't quite figure out slide" club.
Yes! Ariel is such a great player! This was a great episode
I guess I'm doing it right. My slide setup: American Standard Telecaster -> SlideRig -> (optional Mooer Slow Engine) -> Lazy J Cruiser -> Supro Drive -> Chase Bliss Gravitas -> Belle Epoch -> Fender Bassbreaker.
David Dyte, does the Slow Engine do a fairly convincing swell?
Adam: totally. It's great.
Posen's phrasing! OMG so good!
Love Joey and the Bros. Landreth, so this episode was fantastic (especially as my own slide playing talent is non-existent). Props to you Mr.Posen, sublime playing and tone! Regards from New Zealand
Dan, can't tell you how inspiring it was to hear you....learning. Maybe there is hope for my playing, as I see everyone sounds "less than great" when they are learning. Thanks for the vid!
I like that guy! Realy! Slide playing is in progress. 😊😊
Just 'sliding' into the comments to say This. Was. Awesome!
I think you guys should start "That Pedal School". Teach aspiring and professional guitarists how to use pedals, alone and or in series. Keep rock'n.
Awesome video. Love hearing a great slide player.
Dan always looks so happy when he's watching someone play. It's almost cute.
I noticed when you said that you were running into the effects return you said that you'll be doing that in another episode. I felt like you were saying that just for me (though I suspect I'm not the only person that's brought it up).
Keep up the great work guys.
It's fun to watch you guys geek out another guitar player. It's also fun to watch you struggle to play slide. I've never played slide, so I couldn't do any better.
19:20 min
Dan and Mick Look like an old couple enjoying the music
WOW! AMAZING!
Great episode guys. Mick mentioned a possible future episode featuring The Kingsley Maiden and Page running through a loop. My Maiden, Page DS, and Harlot are still a month out. I'd love to see you guys do an episode that includes the Maiden. So far there are no demos for it. Also want to mention that Simon is such a great guy to deal with and his pedals are 2nd to none. After I received my Minstrel, I knew I had to have more. TPS just keeps getting better and better. Keep up the great work. Cheers.
+DrProgNerd Cheers Dr Prog. That episode is coming. I've been working with it and I'm really liking the way the Maiden and Page work together... into the loop! Gadzooks. We're filming this one next week, should come out befotr Christmas. Cheers!
Outstanding. Looking forward to it. Thanks for the reply. Cheers!
I freaking love the Bros. Landreth, and I love TPS, so this is a perfect combo. Great video as usual!!!
Cheers Brandon!
This episode has been fantastic and very interesting!
This is great. Thanks. Ariel is great. His slide at times reminds me of George Harrison, and he tosses bits of songs by, or covered by, The Beatles relatively frequently into playing in these kinds of videos (there was a bit of ' 'Til There Was You' and what sounded like 'Let It Be' in this one), so I wonder if he likes or has been influenced by George.
In addition to seeing Ariel on TPS I really enjoy seeing Mick and Danish Pete, and Danish Pete and Ariel together on the Anderton's channel.
Great show, thank you!
When you are wearing the slide and you fret notes behind the slide, you don't have to move the slide off the strings at all, because fretting notes pushes the strings you are fretting below the slide (so they are not touching). Sonny Landreth talks about this in a bunch of interview/lessons.
jgodin312 oh man thank you, I’ve been busting about how to do that for ages.
This guy can seriously play! It really doesn't matter if he's playing through handmade boutique pedals or off-the-shelf MXR and Boss'es. He has put down the time to practice and his idea of tone is beyond gear. All you're listening to is this. The gear only allows him to project better what he already has. my 2c.
It’s always the case. So the next question is... why do great players choose the gear they do? What does it give them? Because they don’t all use the cheapest stuff now....
that's a very good question. In my opinion, 1) because the market and it's community can bring enormous business opportunities for them, not only as salespeople but at socializing also (think NAMM) 2) much gear is been given to them, especially pedals, 3) because yes, there's obviously a 2% improvement in their tone projection than using mainstream gear (which is not trash, those days BTW). My initial comment goes to all the people who never practice to become better at their playing and endlessly looking for the next great pedal/amp/guitar, so that will finally make them sound better than they really are. But I understand this is how the market works. :)
It would be great if you guys asked the visitor what it took him/her to achieve this level of playing. What was his/her's motivation to develop musically. But that would make you "That Pedal (and hard work) Show" :D I'm kidding. Great show and great players you bring there! Cheers!
Re the business/opportunity thing, you couldn’t be more wrong. The vast vast vast majority of guitarists get absolutely nothing from using the gear they do. Moreover, many artists get given stuff for free, so if everything is free, what do they choose? Mick here. I get stuff for free too, but I’m pretty certain that the vast majority of artists wouldn’t use something just because it’s free. Same as me.
I agree that getting obsessed with believing that gear will improve your playing is futile. However, having a sound that inspires you definitely improves your playing. And of course it’s not a level playing field. Not everybody gets it, not everybody appreciates gear. But I can tell you that the difference between, say, a good American Standard Strat and a great Custom Shop Relic is //everything// to me. The difference between my Two Rock and a mid range valve amp is VAST. High quality analogue effects vs mid range digital multi effects. COLOSSAL. But I’ll say again, not everybody can hear it, and even if they can, not everybody likes it. So it’s an entirely personal and arbitrary opinion.
Use what inspires you most, absolutely nothing else. That’s what I do!
I actually own/have owned lots of vintage and custom gear. I didn't mean to diminish the importance of high quality tools and all the excitement they bring to us the players. What I mean is that any Ariel Posen, Josh Smith etc. don't play the way they play because of the equipment. Too often people anticipate the tones from the equipment forgetting about the player, his timing, the sense of melody, harmony, musical instinct and the volume of work involved to create these amazing timbres on your show. I'm complimenting you as well, of course! Hey, also thanks for taking the time to reply the biggie before. Cheers!
I'm going through this second viewing with my jaw hanging on the floor. I've just taken up slide myself, so this is amazing!
+Cyrus Fontaine yep, Ariel, what a legend!
Love this episode.
I will say, one of my favorite tones of all time was the sound you were getting with the Tele and the Sliderig in the compressor video
Killer playing, wonderful episode!
really cool inspiring video. thank guys.
love the intro...
I just got my first tremolo pedal today in the form of the Lovepedal tap tempo tremelo & it's now one of my favorite effects!
One of the best episodes I've ever seen for you guys so far. Ariel is amazing and so nice. His playing is superb!
Been trying to give myself a crash course in slide guitar this last week. Very happy to get some proper help!
@ 16:00, yes you can switch the order of the reverb and tremolo on the Flint. I think you hold both buttons and turn the "Decay" knob. :-) Great videos. Thank you for doing what you do!!
Dan's reactions almost as good as Ariel's playing ... almost. Time for the Brisbane Delta to hear some slide, heading for socket set now.
Love me some slide. This guy is great! How about convincing Derek Trucks to come over as well ;-)
prob not a great idea as derek pretty much is guitar, cable, and amp. if you're lucky there might be a channel switcher. would be the shortest pedalboard tour ever..!
G'day Mick & Dan. Hello from Queanbeyan, Australia. I hope you are well in the UK! Sorry the Covid has stuffed you up soooo bad. We are very lucky here in Australia. Late to watch this video. I thought i was watching fairly carefully but I didn't catch what tuning Ariel was using here in this video. What an amazing guitar player! I hope you reply. Dan, I don't know if you got familiar with Wasp/Holden valve Amps before you left Aus. I have a small collection. Getting some great sounds out of them.
F#@k that was quick!
Wow I had to watch this a couple times. Love the less is more approach
