I can't even fathom how he thinks so fast harmonically. It's easy to spot someone going through the motions of well practiced licks, but Joey is inventing complex structures on the spot. It's joyful, soulful playing that is only rarely heard these days. The experiment with the two counterpoint tremelos was astonishing and was way better than, say, chorus or traditional modulation effects. I'm blown away. That's twice you've done this recently, Matt Schofield and now this. Time for you to grab Chris Buck!
naturally comes with practice, you can start anywhere - create some tension then finding a way to resolve it. Forces people to understand harmonic theory a lot more that's for sure.@@hiimawasteoftime8678
That harmonic note moved up the string when he slid. Took my brain awhile to process what has happened there. Crazy I’ve never seen a slide player do that.
This really was a superb episode, easily one of your best. How is Joey not one of the most popular guitarists around? His playing is monumental. He should be releasing music all the time as his melodies are amazing. In fact, I would buy an album of him just noodling on his guitar for a couple of hours.... this was epic.
+Gavin Badcock Dan here. I asked myself the same thing. The songs, the voice, the guitar playing, his stage presence, the guy is a superstar. The way the music industry works is a complete mystery to me
Joey Landreth No need to say thanks Joey, it's all genuine. I reckon there there are definitely lots of people like me that would love you to put out music more often. Hope to see you live soon as well. Cheers!
Gavin Badcock yup! I back up that comment! I'm waiting for some friend or family member to go to usa to ask them to bring me a copy of Whiskey (because I can't get it in any form here in Argentina) but I hope there's more music coming in the near future too! But for now thanks for joining that pedal show once again Joey and thanks Dan and Mick for this oportunity of geeking out to great music with great audio quality and lots of fun!
OMG that harmonic at 10:47, pure heaven, I was doing other things while the sound was in the background, had to go back 2 or 3 times to make sure it was real and how he did it...hats off!!!!
Came back to this video after 4 years, missed the amazing sounds of that harmonic tremolo and Joey's absolutely fenomenal playing. Thank god for youtube and this channel for letting us go back in time to rewatch this masterpiece.
Great show, that was the highlight of my week Joey was blinding so good to see him here, just love that Collins guitar and on that note Bill Collings R.I.P. to a brillient man
+Doug J Indeed. I just wrote an obit for him for Guitarist. I knew Bill a little bit. He was a great man: absolute inspiration. May he RIP as the rest of us enjoy his legacy and work. Thank you Bill.
26:20 the way Mick and Dan look at each other looks so much like the look two proud parents give each other when their kid nails their line in the school nativity play
Oh my goodness!!! These sounds and Joey's playing are SO moving, it's incredible! Especially his playing starring at 26:56 . Also, fantastic job to the team that produced the audio for this video, it genuinely sounded exceptionally amazing.
+iDemandU90 Universal Audio came down and helped us record. Exactly the same process as usual in terms of mics and positioning but a better front end (Apollo 8p). Mick produced and mixed the audio as he normally does. Sounds GREAT doesn't it?
Absolutely impressive! Had no idea just how expressive his playing really was. Watching him quite literally FEEL every note out of his guitar is very inspiring. True talent here. Cheers guys! Excellent show!
Massive Thanks to That Pedal Show for bringing Joey again. It's always a huge pleasure to ear the Man play. Jesus... That's awesome. And Dan, that double Tremolo was MAGNIFICENT. Just Beautiful. Thank you!!!
I just re-watched at the close of 2020, in hindsight it’s pretty cool to see how early on Joey had the main riff for “got to be you” in his head, before it was fully fleshed out (that’s what he played to close out the show). Awesome as always!
...now you have to stack both of those trems into a Magnatone vibrato!!!! We can make the world spin backwards on its axis if we keep at this!!!! Great show guys.
Pee myself! Dan, you may have just launched some geek pedal-maker into designing a two sided tremolo pedal with one side harmonic and the other side not, that can be mixed. I'm in! D&M PHASY TREM? That is amazing in headphones! You obviously provided some inspiration for Mr. Landreth (respect paid) to explore, much to our benefit. Wow! Great episode. Joey....Wow :0
Just started watching this and I feel just like Dan.. 'YEEAAAAAHHHHHhhhhh!' TPS shows are always great and there's just something extra special that seems to happen when Joey's on. Yes, yes, full on man crush!
Micks face when contemplating a three way headphone listen with dan and Joey. Love you Mick, you have so much love for this and it shows in your enthusiasm and curiosity. I can relate.
WoooooooooW! One of my favorite TPS videos in a long time. Great sounds and playing. Joey's playing sort of demands you to close your eyes and look inward. Truly inspiring and special. Thanks so much guys!
So glad Blake Mills is getting more props. I had tix for his first ever UK tour and I happened to be in hospital the day he was playing but I was still determined to get out for the show even though my parents wanted me to miss it. Ended up watching the show after being up for just shy of 40 hours, dosed on painkillers and fighting sleep. Very very worth it: one of the best shows I've ever been to and something I'm not likely to see again. Oh, and great show as always (anddd, welcome back Joey!)
If you love harmonic trem, it's worth reading Leo's patent application for it, dated around '59. It's public domain. There are two documents. One shows a simplified schematic, and a very neat graph showing the frequency modulation carried on the LFO wave. And the other is Leo's careful and thorough explanation of every single component. It's an amazing read.
@9:00 Mick's expression when Joey said that The Dueslist integrates the blues breaker and the tube screamer in one stompbox pedal... Don't worry, we all were amazed too! :o
This is about the 4th time I have watched this episode, ( prior to the bias and harmonic trem experiment ), with the harmonic trem , of the pedal and super, the guitar breathes with the pulsating phasing of the frequencies, as the bass rises the treble falls and visa versa, magic happens with frequency. It is the perfect compliment for the open C tuned semi hollow body and the slide. Joey brings it all to life. Thankyou again Joey, Dan, Mick and Simon. cheers.
That Pedal Show so much of it doesn't though, it's derivative, by the numbers, stack it high sell it cheap product, thick with six form rhyming dictionary sentiment and manufactured plastic regional authenticity. It's special moments such as this that remind you of how extraordinary music can be when it's this special. And as you say thank God for the Landreths and the Posens and the Schofields and dare I say it the Taylors and Steinhardts
Totally get it. Have had that happen at a couple of live shows that were so amazing I had to try hard to keep it together : ) (Sinatra in Vegas and Fingerstyler Richard Smith in a little club). Just shows your passion for it...
Was lucky enough to see Joey at the Flowerpot in Derby earlier in the year... room full of people all tearing up! Go see him live... an amazing experience.
You know, I'm not the best player in the world. Hell I'm average at best. I don't know a whole lot of stuff either. I've been playing for 22 years self taught mostly with a few lessons. I played my whole life listening to albums and rewinding tapes and CDs to do my best at learning how to play things. I kept at it until I was convinced that what I was hearing was how I was playing it. So I learned how to bend strings by the laws of nature. No one ever told me what bending or sliding or anything was when I started. I had to learn it by necessity. I absolutely dedicated my playing to learning how to phrase and articulate while playing. I've always been able to pick out something about most guitar players in most genres and emulate their style convincingly. Not all of it but something. There are two players I absolutely cannot emulate at all. One is Jeff Beck and the other is Joey Landreth. What an incredible player. That was an absolute incredible show guys.
Great show guys. You've blown it for us Brownface freaks though. I think the prices just went up 20%!. There are actually two circuit versions of the harmonic trem Late 59 to late 60 used two preamp tubes for the trem. From then till the blackfaces the trem circuit used 3 x 12ax7s. Not all brownfaces had it. The Princeton used the standard bias mod setup.
That Pedal Show I think one of the reasons they stopped was that it was expensive to build. Three tubes, sockets, chassis space, a power transformer with enough current capacity for all of the extra tubes. It all adds up. The real thrill is using one of these amps with the stand alone Fender tube reverb unit of the time. Psychedelic baby! Seeing you guys just breathless with delight at the sounds, and feeling that myself from the other side of the world (Australia) was a real treat. Fabulous show this week. Thanks again.
Hi Babette, The deluxe doesn't have the harmonic trem. It is, however, in my view, one of the greatest amps of any brand in the history of the universe. You are very fortunate. What an incredible sound they have. Best dirt sound ever!
I come here once a week to see your 2 faces when Joey hits that first chord! Priceless! Thank you guys for keeping the show going and having guests like Joey on!
As an avid fan of the show, there was unfortunately one huge let down with this weeks episode... It needed to be at least 2 hours! Wow, I could listen to him play all day. Great show fellas!
Took a whole 9 minutes for the Canadian to apologize! Though he really should have, who goes that long without owning a tube screamer? Awesome episode as usual guys, I'm hardly into it and I'm already convinced that my board needs some trem.
His playing inspires singers, not the other way around. Seriously, to meet a singer with that level of legato and connection from note to note would be stuff of legend. Thats just part of having to use air from your lungs to sustain versus letting a string decay (with a sick compressor non the less). I play guitar and am a classically trained singer. Joey's musicality, expressiveness, and intensity inspire me both to play and sing. When I sing I usually imagine a really thick cello in my head. It helps get that full thick, but still biting sound from my voice (known as ciarro scurro in the classical realm, "bright-dark"). I get that same sensation from Joey's playing, but with some hair on it. Love the show, love you guys. In awe this week :).
+Danocaster Interesting perspective. We like this. Presumably you've heard Joey song too, right? However good a guitar player he is, he's equally as good as a singer. The guy should be a household name. :0)
This guitarist of 40yrs is welling up listening to this. Thats some of the most beautiful slide playing ive ever heard right there. Im sure Bill Collings is smiling up there..
Great to see Joey back on the show and kudos for the mention of Blake Mills. I've only just discovered his music and his playing is tugging at my heartstrings on a regular basis.
+Simon Godfrey Yep. The more of these guys we meet, the more we understand the real difference between artist and musician. It's absolutely inspiring. :0)
By far my favorite channel on youtube. Guitars, guitarists, pedals, amps and awesome friendly and knowledgeable dudes. That's too long of a name though, so That Pedal Show will work just fine. Y'all make my day dudes!
Sounds (almost) as good as in the room! Good work Tom from UA. Thanks again, Joey, for making our old amps sing and to Mick and Dan for making us feel at home!
Can i come to your christmas party...... i imagine a big shin-dig with Dan, Mick, Cpt. Lee, Rabea, Chappers, Danish Pete, Ariel, Mary Spender, Ariel and his Landreth Bros......... shit...... what a gathering!
I gotta admit, at first I didn't really get Joey's playing. He's undoubtedly talented but it didn't hit me...until now. His subtlety and feel are astounding. Now I'm jealous. Great episode as always.
You would want to have a heart of stone not to love Dan's reactions to sounds he hears. Absolute pure love for what he does. It's infectious dude, keep up the great work.
Best episode yet guys, bravo. +Joey Landreth you have inspired me to finally learn to play slide. Between you & Jason Isbell it's become an imperative for me. Outstanding job all around, thank you guys so much. 👏
Oh man this guy's playing is just magical. Just listening to Joey strumming those beatiful chords took me somewhere else. I could listen to that all day it's just amazing, had me tearing up. can't wait till he's back on here with you guys!
I can't even fathom how he thinks so fast harmonically. It's easy to spot someone going through the motions of well practiced licks, but Joey is inventing complex structures on the spot. pgod1960 too kind of ya!
Imagine a show with Julian Lage... that'd be least pedal show there is! 😆
@@yuribillones5094 it sure would!
I think he doesn't think it out like we do it's just more natural because he practises that more

LOVE IT... LOVE YOU GUYS!!!
+Peter Honoré Love you DP! DP4PM
I love all of you…
Peter Honoré AHHHHH right back at you ya beautiful bugger!
Who else pauses the video the instant the close-up of the pedalboard is first shown (0:40) to have a good mooch at what's in store for the episode?
OK, what the pedalboard close-up didn't prepare me for was what a fantastic, tasteful player Joey is... and what a lovely guy too!
Yep me, guilty as charged m'lud.
Sometimes I have to wipe the drool off my face!
Yup, me too.
Ha ha.... I'm not the only one then!
Dan getting emotional over these fantastic players is worth the price of admission.
+jeffreylane73 hehehehehe
I can never get tired of hearing him play! Dan, Mick please drag him into your studio every chance you get!
+TheOddKris That's a certainty. :0)
I'm obsessed with that artificial harmonic slide thing at 10:47! Play-rewind-repeat ad infinitum! Total guitar goals!
Dude I was just about to comment, how insane is that???
That harmonic note moved up the string when he slid. Took my brain awhile to process what has happened there. Crazy I’ve never seen a slide player do that.
I come back here every now and then just to get the spine tinglies again from Joey's playing and the tone. Just absolutely glorious.

0:03 It only took one chord from Joey for Dan and Mick to gaze lovingly into each other's eyes.
That's how good this guy is, people.
OMG that harmonic at 10:47, pure heaven, I was doing other things while the sound was in the background, had to go back 2 or 3 times to make sure it was real and how he did it...hats off!!!!

+Jed Sprague Glad somebody for Jed!
That got me, too.
I still come back almost every month after all these years to listen to Dan's experiment
just unbelievable tones and playing! I think I have listened to both shows with Joey Landreth about 5 times.
Came back to this video after 4 years, missed the amazing sounds of that harmonic tremolo and Joey's absolutely fenomenal playing. Thank god for youtube and this channel for letting us go back in time to rewatch this masterpiece.

This is the only video on pedals I repeatedly watch, once every month or so. What a dude.
Massive Thanks to That Pedal Show for bringing Joey again. It's always a huge pleasure to ear the Man play. Jesus... That's awesome. And Dan, that double Tremolo was MAGNIFICENT. Just Beautiful. Thank you!!!
One of the most naturally gifted musicians I've ever seen. Wow
Wow, that duo tremolo thing was INCREDIBLE!
24:48 that series of chords is just unbelievable. every time I hear it, I get emotional. It has to be the most beautiful thing ive ever heard.

Collings guitars are superb! RIP Bill Collings.
After years of watching this I’ve made the conclusion.
this IS the best video (for me) ever on UA-cam.
Wow! Just Wow. Best tone ever. Period.
+Mark Whitelaw Wonderful isn't it?!
It's like the notes of Jesus, quite possibly the best tone out of any guitar heard on TPS.. :'|

Great to see Blake Mills getting a shout out on here. Heigh Ho is an absolute masterpiece!
Whitewallsessions totally... it's in my top three favourite records.
What are the other two? ;)
Joey, still wondering what the other two are for my own edification
On this day at 10:45 my face was melted off by an insane harmonic slide tap of doom
Joey Landreth is flipping awesome
I watched episodes with Joey 3-4 times already. And I'm not going to stop.

Keep coming back to this epic show 6 years on. Inspiring stuff fellas.

Woah! Holy cow his playing is fabulous and what a sound! Sheer joy this one, thanks fellas!
That warmed my heart lads. Keep doing what you do 👍🏻
+Peter Slowey Cheers Peter. We shall do our level best!
The image of Dan, Mick, and Joey sitting with headphones on and listening to an album together is priceless
18:25 the chord arrangement is insane, got goose bumps. The two trem amps going with the OD was epic, geez.
My god what a guitar player! I'm bouncing back and forth between being very inspired and completely discouraged.

So that "incredible" album they were talking about, is it Blake Mills - Heigh Ho?
Astro Studio yep. open.spotify.com/album/2pAGZOhOB3tYMQiU0SJSkb?si=KD7OHo8I

+Astro Studio Yep. 5.99 on iTunes. Help a guy out. And Whiskey by Joey too of course! :0)
By far my favorite channel on youtube. Guitars, guitarists, pedals, amps and awesome friendly and knowledgeable dudes. That's too long of a name though, so That Pedal Show will work just fine. Y'all make my day dudes!
+MotoGuitard :0) Hooray!
10:48 WHAT??? Holy sh*t this cat can play..
One of the best episodes ever. I keep coming back to this....
Sounds (almost) as good as in the room! Good work Tom from UA. Thanks again, Joey, for making our old amps sing and to Mick and Dan for making us feel at home!
Origin Effects thank you SO much for the lend. Such a joy to spend some time plugged into a couple old dudes like that:)
You guys need a third stool lol
+lose3111 Spent all our money on pedals. ;0)
+That Pedal Show If I ever join the fun, then I will bring my own.
That,s why my family sit's on the floor.
And now, who will sit in pedal throne?
Thanks for the run of brilliant guests Dan and Mick. Joey Landreth thank you for your beautiful music . cheers.
An Englishman, an Australian and a Canadian walk into a bar. Which one is the biggest guitar geek?
+Bite Sized Blues Effects geek: Dan. Guitar geek: Mick. Playing the guitar geek: Joey. :0)
This was a great episode. Hilarious reactions from Dan and Mick and Joey’s playing during the end of the video with the dual trem was sublime.
Joeys clean sound is just so staggeringly good with the big strings and the low bass. That tremelo just made my ears do things unmentionable.
You would want to have a heart of stone not to love Dan's reactions to sounds he hears. Absolute pure love for what he does. It's infectious dude, keep up the great work.
+nathan Board Cheers Nathan. We're lucky to do what we do. Not least because we couldn't do anything else. ;0)
I was hoping his guitar was a cheaper alternative to a gibbo... I was wrong...
+James Jack Hahahah!!! No, a much more expensive one. :0)
*crying inside*
James Jack check out Eastman guitars as a cheaper alternative.
HAH! If only right
More like a more expensive Heritage :)
Best episode of the best pedal show ever! Thanks so MUCH guys! You've made my day. It's brilliant! Wish I was there.
Best episode yet guys, bravo. +Joey Landreth you have inspired me to finally learn to play slide. Between you & Jason Isbell it's become an imperative for me.
Outstanding job all around, thank you guys so much. 👏
Some of the best guitar sounds I've ever heard. Awesome. Joey is the best.
+Leo Thank you Leo. Some of the best we've heard too. Thanks for watching!
That Pedal Show thanks for making such great stuff!
Just me, who pressed the like button before they watched it?
Oh man this guy's playing is just magical. Just listening to Joey strumming those beatiful chords took me somewhere else. I could listen to that all day it's just amazing, had me tearing up. can't wait till he's back on here with you guys!
+Ricky Weimann yep, bring in the room with Joey doing his thing is moving beyond words
Ok so I just ordered one of those duellist Pedals. :-)
+Alan Evans I was thinking of doing the same. Mick here

Alan Evans Yeeeeesssssss!!!

Leonel I need to sell some stuff before I do that. Super tempted to abuse the credit card tho! Haha
What a cool show today! Really opened my mind to tremolo... That dual-trem sound was just mesmerizing. I'm gonna have to try that!
