- A couple of hours fishing for Tommy ruffs also known as Australian Herring at Cape Jervis South Australia. They have been biting well down there lately,it is very good to see these tastey little fish about in such great numbers hope you enjoy my video and get to see Cape Jervis if you have never been there before also if you are new to fishing I hope you can pick up a couple of fishing tips..... I went to Cape Jervis last Sunday and didn't even get one bite from a Tommie. Got a Wrasse which was thrown back. I have since had 3 sessions at Port Elliot. This afternoon being the 3rd. Brought 20 home. I have them soaking in Brine at the moment and after drying them in the fridge I will Vacuum seal them and freeze them till I plan to smoke them.
Your Burley and Maggots work a treat and I was pulling them in fairly quick much to the disgust of 2 youngsters who were not catching anything. I gave them a burley spring each and some Burley. They managed to catch a couple after that and when I left I gave them my remaining gents. As I was walking back to the car I could hear their excited chatter as they were catching quite a few more. Good to see a couple of young fellas having fun fishing. And Thanks for your helpful Videos as well.
Hi Cliff. Ge wiz just goes to show fishing is never guaranteed, the tommies at Cape Jervis have been having such a good run, generally around 4pm onwards. Maybe they were at the Adelaide royal show. there can be quite a few different species of fish off there from time to time.Nice of you to help them youngsters out with burley cages, bait and advice they will never forget.I too have pre brined fish and vacuum sealed and frozen ready for smoking before. My last catch a few smoked for my dad a few for my breakfast and a few fish cakes they are yummy. thanks for your comment Cliff.

Brings back a few memories of sixty years ago. My rod tied to the crossbar of an old bike, jam sandwiches for lunch and off I'd go during the first day of the school hols. Squashed gentles and jam sandwiches never did me any harm Dave.

Dave, always great seeing how others fish and prepare their gear and associated goodies. Herring are great little scrappers and we get plenty over here in Perth. Find any inshore reef near weed and some some scattered broken ground and they'll be there. Berley is the key. It's always the difference between a poor outing and a full creel. HI west fishos, thanks for your comment mate. I have just found your message sometimes we don't get notification and they get missed glad I found it. Herrings are a great fish to catch, there is no size limit here in SA and they have been hammered by the netters resulting in a lot of small fish, netting has been slowed down now so it will improve ya, a long time ago we use to catch the big ones you guys call bull herring and they were Awesome. I just 'took up' fishing again after a holiday down at lower Eyre Peninsula in 2019/20 & January this year. Prior to 2019 it was 1982 at Smokey Bay was my last fishing trip.
So after some good success at Tumby Bay- I'm hooked. 😎

I've caught plenty of gar fish in the last couple of weeks using them.
I have also made my own burley ( based loosely around your recipe, but inspired by yours.) .
Im now hooked on fishing for gar.,should of bought a boat many years before i did ( just recently).

thank you for watching James, fishing bag limits are so different from state to state we haven't got a size limit on herring over hear SA we probably should have. They are so yummy. happy fishing James. Cheers David
@@davidsheldonfishing9726 I did hear that SA are due for bag limit review, but who knows. I need to work on my fishing skills, I know the theory but putting it into practice is the problem haha..
@@james-jq8sk we had a bag limit review not to long ago, they reduced it from 60 per person to 40 per person, reason why we don't have a size limit currently on tommies is because they are one of the few "bait" fish we have in SA, our other fish we have that are bait fish all have size limits on them, 21cm for mullet, a 21cm mullet is getting a bit big for a live bait (depending on what you are fishing for, mulloway sure but something like flathead and its a little big) garfish are 23cm again a little big for some live bait purposes so really we only have tommies left.
Yet another wonderful video. Will be trying for tommies in two weeks as part of the Pirtek fishing challenge. Will adopt your method as I've yet to catch tommies, however the Cape may be a bit far though :)

@@davidsheldonfishing9726 Hey mate went to Brighton jetty on the day of the comp around mid arvo. Sent out a berley trail using a recipe from another of your videos, and within 10 minutes could see fish in the trail. Then a bunch of teenagers turned up and decided the jetty was a spring board, and that was the end of that. Hope you did better if you entered.
G'day mate yes I did enter and went to a spot I know in the afternoon, the tide wasn't the best but as you know if theres fish around you can still catch a few. Turned out there was only a few big wrass around and no KG whiting "O" Well we can only try, all the best mate

Been on that ferry 3 times now in last 2 years. I'm from Melbourne, this time going further to Yorke peninsula staying in Port Vincent. Fishing mostly that's why I've been watching your videos. Kangaroo Island was pretty good for fishing last March. Lots of crabs (blue swimmer) trevally and large king George whiting..
I don't live far from cape jervis, good fun going over to k.I on that ferry and what a buetiful place with fantastic fishing i have never fished port vincent probably plenty of king george, garfish,tommies etc. It will be nice. Thank you for watching and commenting Jam.
YP has some of the best fishing in SA to be honest,Ardrosson was known for its snapper fishing before the snapper ban Port Vincent and Stansbury are great for blue crabs, woolbay is one of the best squidding jetties you could ever squid from, Coobowie bay (in a boat) and Edithburgh (Edithburgh was known for big snapper before the ban) are great for whiting, the Jetty in Edithburgh is great for Tommies/gar and whiting off the end as well as squid, the Fishermans jetty in edithburgh (the small one) is good for squid and mullet from march to april, saltana point is salmon trout galore, troughbridge point you will find schools of salmon every now and then, then down the bottom end beaches are well known for salmon shark and mulloway, browns beach known as one of the best salmon beaches in the state, Daily head and gleasons landing are well known as some of the best mulloway beaches, point turton is good for gar and tommies when the kingfish arent at the jetty (dont bother trying to catch them they rarely take a bait off that jetty), port victoria is good for whiting if u have a boat and wallaroo is good for snapper before the ban.
@@comeatmebro3229 Sorry for late reply. Just saw your post. I concentrated my efforts on crabs but they were small and empty. Got a lot of calamari so that was cool. YP does look ike a great place to fish. I stayed at Port Vincent for a week. I saw a lot of Kingfish cruising up and down the length of the Pier at Stansbury while I was chasing squid. Did put on a lure to see if one would bite but yea.. no go. Will def return next year though might stay in some other town next time. Thanks for your info. Will use it next time Im there.

Hi John , thanks mate. I agree they are small but its all we have most of the time, sometimes bigger and they are a treat. I have seen the herring you guys catch over there, they are whoppers compared to the ones over here. We use to catch big ones over here years ago frequently, But netting has done a lot of damage. The Herring I see being caught around Fremantle are the same size as what Monsieur Sheldon catches...
Port Lincoln tommies are big.
Check out the rubber float stoppers. They just slide up and down your line, cast through the eyes well and can stay on even if you change rigs.
G'day, yes I've used them they are good too. I didn't have any on hand to show but the ones I used do the job well. if I'm winding the float stopper through my eyes or even onto my reel for fishing deep I use a sliding Knott, that works well also. Hello Chris, sorry extra late reply I just looked at a thing called dashboard to do with my UA-cam and it showed me messages I haven't replied and there were quite a few I do like to reply every body I usually get notified but not all of the time by the looks of that lol. Gday Trin how you been mate. Tommies have been biting so well at Cape Jervis lately 4pm onwards, off the jetty and rocks. I usually set my float depth to around 4 feet deep. Cheers to you to mate.

David! Keep coming back to these videos, used this exact setup this evening at Wirrina Cove, 5 landed tommies within 20mins. Certainly a few that got away. Will pop down Cape Jervis soon and give the famous rock a go there 😂
Also, any recommendations for a filleting knife? One I have doesn't seem to take or hold an edge.

Hi Seb, sorry late reply. Nice to hear you have watching and finding my videos helpful, nice feed of tommies they are yum hope you had fun on the rock. I don't know a lot about knives but over the years I have improved a lot using my steel to sharpen them recently I bought a new steel called EZE LAP knife diamond sharpener it wasn't cheap around 90 dollars but it's very good I have had Shimano filleting knife kit's bought for me before and they have been good knives. Don't need float stoppers,that's what the spring is for
That's right but this float slips unless I use a half hitch or wrap my line around the float as well as the spring so I use float stoppers no problem.

Hi Ash, the rod I'm using in this video is a old 10ft superstick flick stick no longer available. Daiwa do a rod called the SeaJigger my son in law has one I think its the model 305mL 4-8KG very nice rod and very similar action 10ft long.
Ive noticed you seem to use longer rods for all of your different fishing. Do you use the same 2 rods for everything else that you use for salmon fishing off the beach? If so, how do you go feeling the bites of smaller fish like tommys and whiting etc?
Hi mate, I do use the two longer rods for a lot of my beach, jetty and rock fishing one is 9ft the other is 10ft the 9ft is a light fishing rod I use for mullet, bream, whiting, Tommy ruff, generally smaller fish with line between 6-12lb line but this rod can also be used for light lure fishing because it has a nice fast tapered firm but flicky tip its called a flickstick, they can't be bought any more Daiwa do a rod called the sea jigger the light model is very similar. My other rod is a pen prevail in one video also a Snyder glass in other videos these rods are used for my salmon fishing and are fished with 10 to 15kg braid, but if mullet did show up and if I wanted to I could easily put a mullet rig on either of these rods and catch some mullet mainly because of how fine braid is connected to your 12lb mullet rig the braid makes it so much easier to feel bites of smaller fish and easily possible to catch. There are so many rods for different uses over time you end up with heaps all different lengths all with spastic uses with a few all capable of doing the same things.
hi mate have you heard off anyone getting red inflamed teary eye issues ,,,i use alot pollards oil and deshell prawns after weekend fishing seem to have eye problems ...any ideas

G day David are the fish you catch baitfsh? In nsw we have size limits on salmon and you dont eat bream .Catch some large sea run mullet and it will change your mind kilo plus not your poddy mullet.Thanks though for your tips.Cheers Adam
G'day Adam, yes the Tommy Ruffs (Australian Herring) in this video, are excellent snapper bait and live bait for mulloway, also yummy to eat, over here SA they have no size limit and a bag limit of 40. We have a bag limit for salmon also 10 over 35cm and 20 between 21cm and 35cm. I gave up eating bream some of them tasted a bit like swamp but if I get one off the beach I might eat it they are nice when you get a clean one. Them kilo sea run mullet sound good you mention, they would be great sport, what bait do you use for them?We get big jumping mullet over here but they generally won't take a bait they mainly eat alghe I think. Hi Peter I went over my bag limit I thought it was 60 but when I was looking at PIRSA I saw it had been changed to 40. Felt so bad it was a real honest mistake on my behalf I'm all for rules and regulations, we all have to look after and respect what we love to do.

@@alexrodley2650 the bag limit use to be 60, they changed it to 40 a couple years ago, mullet and tommies use to have the same bag limit, tommies are now 40 and mullet are still 60, i dont know what anyone would do with 60 mullet though

Gday David you can buy maggots at all tackle shops S.A. Can't really help you on a location all I can say you have to move well away from every one, its illegal to breed them in suburbs.

Hi David. I thought you wanted to breed maggots, a misunderstanding. Most Adelaide metro jetties you can get a few fish from time to time, Tommy ruffs, Garfish, Snook, Yellowfin whiting, bream,Salmon and Salmon trout, Squid etc. being a beginner I would suggest when time permits go and check a few out around morning high tides and afternoon high tides, they are the most likely times you will find local fishos fishing watch the ones catching fish and pick up some great tips some will talk to you some won't fishermen can be very secretive. look for advise wherever you can local knowledge is best. I grew up fishing around Port Noarlunga there is a very good jetty there you can catch every thing from there especially salmon in the winter months in rough weather south westerly winds. From my videos you can learn baits and rig to use for certain species and some more different fishing locations. All the best David Sheldon
